The daughter of legendary crooner Nat King Cole, she earned a degree in child psychology from the University of Massachusetts in 1972. Although uncertain about pursuing a career in entertainment, she accepted a summer job singing with a band and was soon performing regularly. In 1974 she met Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy, songwriters and record producers who became frequent collaborators and helped her sign with Capitol Records. A string of rhythm-and-blues albums followed, beginning with her debut album, Inseparable (1975), which earned Cole two Grammy Awards, including one for best new artist. The following year Natalie was released, which went gold and received a Grammy for the hit single “Sophisticated Lady.” Her success continued with Unpredictable (1977) and Thankful (1977), both of which went platinum.
In the early 1980s Cole’s career stalled because of drug problems and a serious throat ailment. She eventually overcame her difficulties, and by the end of the decade she had begun singing more jazz-inspired pop. Her comeback was completed in 1991 with the release of Unforgettable with Love, a double album that featured her father’s classics, including “Smile,” “The Very Thought of You,” and “Mona Lisa.” A commercial and critical success, it was Cole’s first album to reach number one and earned three Grammy Awards. The title track was digitally engineered to simulate a father-and-daughter duet. Later albums include Take a Look (1993), Snowfall on the Sahara (1999), and Ask a Woman Who Knows (2002). She returned to her father’s songbook for Still Unforgettable (2008), a collection of romantic standards that won the Grammy Award for best traditional pop vocal album in 2009. In 2000 her autobiography, Angel on My Shoulder (written with Digby Diehl), was published.
Cole announced in 2008 that she had been diagnosed with hepatitis C, which is a liver disease that is spread through contact with infected blood. Cole attributed having the disease to her past intravenous drug use. Cole explained in 2009 that hepatitis C had "stayed in [her] body for 25 years, and it could still happen to addicts who are fooling around with drugs, especially needles."
Four months after starting treatment for hepatitis C, Cole experienced kidney failure and required dialysis three times a week for nine months. Following her appeal for a kidney on the Larry King Show, she was contacted by the organ procurement agency One Legacy, in May 2009. The facilitated donation came from a family requesting that, if there were a match, their donor's kidney be designated for Cole.
Cole canceled several events in December 2015 due to illness; her last musical performance was a short set of three songs in Manila.[24] She died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on December 31, 2015, at the age of 65. Cole's publicist said the singer's death was the result of congestive heart failure, which her family said was a complication of idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension, which she had been diagnosed with after her kidney transplant in 2009. Her family said in a statement, "Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived... with dignity, strength and honor. Our beloved mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain unforgettable in our hearts forever."
Cole's funeral was held on January 11, 2016, at the West Angeles Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles. David Foster, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie, Chaka Khan, Eddie Levert, Mary Wilson, Gladys Knight, Ledisi, Jesse Jackson, Angela Bassett, Denise Nicholas, Marla Gibbs, Jackée Harry and Freda Payne were among the mourners at the funeral. After the funeral, she was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. Her grave is located in the central lawn area of the 'Court of Freedom' section, Garden of Honor; there is no public access to her grave.

My parents were huge fans of Nat King Cole. I first heard Natalie when I was 10 yrs old on her 1977 hit song "Our Love" (my top favorite). I've been listening to her music for years. Other favorites include: I live for your love, Pink Cadillac, & When I fall in love. I bought her Unforgettable album when it first released & still play it often in the car whenever I drive my elderly parents to places. She is one of my favorite singers of all time. Her voice was so melodic, rich, & smooth as silk (just like her father).

I knew Natalie , she was the sweetest person you ever met. I was in a show in Miami during the 70s that ran for a year. The Ziegfeld follies, my father had a steam car 1899 locomobile steamer that was also in the show. I knew her well in the 70s, she invited me out twice and we had a great time every time. We would buy each other a small piece of jewelry for remembrance, back then she had bought me a friendship ring that had a peace symbol on top. Very sweet human being did not see color, only seen people 😁. This is not my real last name, I was an actress for a long time when I was young. It's funny I watch your channel all the time when this came up it was a sweet thing to see her grave. Like I said what a wonderful person she was, see you on the next video thanks Scott for this one ❤.

Even though I understand it, it's too bad that these areas are locked to the public where most can't admire and pay respects to these entertainers who gave us so much of themselves. It means so much to us that we were able to get a glimpse of these beautiful resting places because of you and your friend Scott, thank you! I loved her voice, and the duet with her dad always gives me goose bumps. I just love these two wonderful singers with the most angelic voices. RIP to all who are buried here ❤🙏

I disagree with most of he replies on this page. If a family or an individual wishes to be bury in an area which has limited access to the public or wants to be buried in an unmarked grave that family or individual's wishes should be respected after death. The privacy of the family in regard to their loved one should be honored.

You are so right, her version of Unforgettable was inescapable when it released. I was 11 when it came out and it was my first exposure to her and, honestly, Nat's music. In a huge year in music - a time when dance tracks dominated - she took over with a cover of a golden age love song. Iconic.

Many thanks to Craig for not only sharing access to the cemetery, but his wealth of information. I recently read Natalie Cole's autobiography & she was very open about her addiction and the impact it had on her life. Natalie Cole's career spanned decades, all while singing such uplifting songs throughout her personal struggles. This Will Be is one of my personal favorites. So many unforgettable songs from an unforgettable woman. Appreciate you Scott for continuing to give us a chance to have access to locations like this. Take care.

The Christmas Song is always the first one we listen to. Natalie, too, was a great singer in her own right and inherited everything from her Dad. Fun fact for any Nat/Natalie fan who hasn't seen the 1998 Lindsay Lohan version of "The Parent Trap": they used Nat's "L-O-V-E" for the opening, and Natalie's "This Will Be" for the ending. ❤

Another great and informative video. I've never been to that cemetery and it's nice to see it through your lense and get the back story on the famous people there. Thanks so much for sharing. It always feels like you take your viewers on a great field trip and it's definitely appreciated. 😊👌🏽

A wonderful voice a life lived hard & it eventually caught up with her but not before she had a recovery and testimony. I saw her documentary movie & it was a wonderful story.

I really enjoyed this vlog. Always been a fan of hers I've read most of her autobiography *Angel on my shoulder". Little known fact she went to private school in Amherst and attended UMass Amherst. When she was at UMass she was there at the same time as basketball legend Dr. J they even dated I believe. She hung out in my hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts too. I was sad & shocked to hear of her passing didn't know her son passed away but they both have beautiful headstones may they all RIP.

I know you want a place to go to talk with and remember a person...but to me, that place is in the heart and the soul....And those places know no boundaries or time limits.

Thanks Scott that was a fascinating video. Slow and serine very fitting in those beautiful souroundings. One of my favourite songs by Nat is "Let there be Love" with George Shearing (jazz pianist) who was born in Battersea, South London, UK.
