Crossfade would emerge on the rock scene in the mid 2000’s and hit it right out of the gate, having a platinum selling record with their 2004 self titled debut record. According to one local paper, they were one of the biggest acts to emerge from South Carolina since Hootie and theBlowfish. But whatever happened to the band? That’s what we’re going to explore in today’s video.
Crossfade came onto many’s people’s radar with the release of their single ‘Cold.’ Personally, I remember when I bought the playstation portable i think it was sometime in 2005 and the song was on my psp as part of the promotional package you get with the game system. I Think spider man 2 was part of it too. While the band seemed to have overnight success their careers really dated back to over a decade, and it was a long road to hitting it big.
Crossfade was made up of frontman and guitarist Ed Sloan, bassist Mitch James, DJ programmer Tony Byroads and drummer Brian Geiger.
The band’s origins dated back to the early 90’s in columbia south carolina when they played under the monicker The Nothing. ¾ of crossfade made up the band with Byroads not being in the lineup yet. Their early sound was said to be heavily influenced by metallica. They went through a some more musical style changes before things started to click in the early 2000’s.
Unlike Hootie and the Blowfish who had a huge grassroots before they got signed to a major label, crossfade took a different approach. Side note guys I’ve done a whole video on the career of hootie and the blowfish link is below. Frontman and guitarist Ed Sloan who previously worked as a software engineer would tell the greenville news focused on writing music and recording . They would utilize a studio Sloan had built in his house and this was around 2001-2002. The band soon added DJ Tony Byroads whose sampling and turntable scratching added a new element to the band’s sound.
The band soon changed their name to sugardaddy superstar. They would sign with a los angeles based company named taxi that worked with bands to refine their sound in hopes of attracting major record label attention. Basically teaching them how to write commercial music. Mitch James would tell the Daily herald “they’re not afraid to tell you if you’re songs suck. They’re brutally honest about your songs.” Things seemed to work out as they were only one of three bands signed to taxi who played the company’s annual road rally convention. Buzz was soon building around the band and they would release
eight tracks as part of a self released set, which included the future hit single Cold. This release would find it’s way into the hands of a company called Promo Squads. According to VNU Monitor and i quote “Promosquad,which supplies Billboard and Billboard radio monitors with its hit maker predictor chart data. The company also operated a website called getfamous that took submissions from unsigned acts. Based on how they perform on the so called hit maker chart data, they got bands intouch with labels. But it was a long time coming.
Crossfade spent nearly 2 years shopping their demo to record labels with it seeming like every label rejected the band.
However, the band finally nabbed a deal with sony owned columbia records. Cue the jokes about a band from columbia being on the label columbia. The band soon changed their name to Crossfade. Columbia brought in famed engineer Randy Staub who had worked with the likes of metallica and motley crue to remix their demo, which eventually became the group’s self titled debut record. He’d also record two new songs with the band including So Far Away and The Unknown. But things were slow for the band. They had to wait nearly 16 months while the record was in limbo. The band at one point were concerned that they were goig to dropped by the label. The long wait resulted in the group’s drummer Brian Geiger leaving being replaced by James Branham.
I want to point out it’s not exactly clear in the interviews what was going on at columbia, but during the 2000’s there was a lot of mergers involving record labels, personnel and management changes and this is a common story i’ve told about other bands during this time period. Finally, rel

They had a 3rd album called We All Bleed and personally I think that was a pretty solid record, I like it much more than the pretty basic first two albums. They had a much darker sound for that one.
My discovery of Crossfade was similar to yours. I also had a promo disc with my PSP that had trailers for upcoming games, as well as music videos for new singles of various artists, and "Cold" was one of them. I think that was around Christmas 2005 (It had already been out a year in Japan at that point). Crossfade seemed decent and Ed Sloan has serious chops, both as a vocalist and guitarist. I remember later on seeing him on TV singing the Star-Spangled Banner, and it was one of those renditions that I felt actually had some power and sincerity behind it. Good on you for giving this band's story more exposure!
They opened for Three Days Grace I think or maybe Seether in the 2000s and they were great. Never saw them touring again.

I dont know where they went but was a good band i always thought , The lead singer was one heck of a guitar player !

I heard that Ed had problems with alcoholism and some drugs (medicines, more specifically) in most of the years that Crossfade was active (around 2004 to 2012). that is true?

I was a fan of these guys back in the day. It was cool to find out later that they worked with Rick Beato
I know some guys from a successful band in the early 2000s that got caught up in a nearly identical situation. Their debut album went gold, charted, and they opened for one of the biggest bands on Earth, but the drummer was fired shortly after the end of the tour. By the time they found a new one and started working on the follow up, the record company went through a merger, and they got dropped. They never released another album. The music industry during that time really sucked. A lot of bands got destroyed in this way for reasons that were beyond their control.

Fantastic band. Still in my playlist.
I didn't think these guy's were bad, just not unique enough to stand out. If they had released their debut album before (or around the same time as) Creed, Fuel, Unloco, etcetcetc... they might have had a larger impact on me. As it was, all of those bands sort of blended together (Puddle Of Mudd, Trapt, Seether, and on). Shinedown is in there, too- however, they are more memorable due to Brent Smith's voice. Nickelback is in the same boat, only for a far more negative reason. But, all of 'em had that formulaic, early-'00's, hard rock sound.

Shinedown is from my hometown. The leadsinger from saliva and I went to school together and was great friends. Hangout with then in 2013. After that life happened. Miss my friend Bobby.

I used to play a lot of Command & Conquer: Generals, and Crossfade's Cold play in during gameplays but back then I wasn't sure where it was coming.
I honestly never heard of Crossfade. Are they worth checking out?

I miss all the good groups...AFI ,Switchfoot,feul,staind,Korn,Drowning Pool,System of the Down,The Used,Chevelle,Yeah Yeah Yeah,Muse,Cold Play,Rage Against the Machine,White Stripes,Good Charlotte,Fallout Boys,POD,Incubus,Weezer,Flyleaf,Paramore...Etc..
I wish they would release music so bad. Makes me cry and destroys me they gave up
Man I loved that album but the times I saw them live was not good. And I’m very forgiving for most live shows.
Their self-titled album was a pretty good album. It does suck for them that they didn't find much success after the first album, but for a radio rock style album, their self-titled album had a lot of deep cuts that were good.
Do a video about ultraspank ! They never get any love and they were on epic and had big connections with rob zombie and Arron Lewis

The early 2000s was not the best time for rock. Every band was pushing the same generic commercial sound. Crossfade was fine but without their own distinct sound/style, it's no suprise they faded away. Great vid man.🤘

They couldn't write the hit singles anymore though.
I thought if anything they sounded more like Nickelback but with more darker tones and lower production.
Saw them in 2005 with my first serious girlfriend. Opened for Seether lol

Nothing special, really. They were part of that parade of early-middle 00s kinda generic commercial Rock. What folks sometimes call "Butt Rock," I believe. Hinder, Buckcherry 2.0, Black Stone Cherry, Saving Abel, etc., etc.

No disrespect to these guys, but that early 2000s rock sound is probably my least favourite style. Still watched your whole video, really enjoy your content and always go look up any band you make a video on.
