Born in a suburb of Buffalo, New York, Kristen Pfaff would go to catholic school where she learned cello and piano at a young age. Her parents would divorce when she was young, but her mother would remarry and she would have a younger half brother. School mates of Pfaff who attended the same catholic school as her described her to the buffalo news as and i quote “bright, happy, always peppy," Not only that but she excelled in school achieving good grades and getting scholarships.
She would attend Boston College and do an exchange program in the Netherlands. It was ffter from returning overseas she would study English and literature at the university of Minnesota starting in 1988. It was while she was a student at the University of Minnesota, she was an important figure in the development of the University radio station called Radio K. There’s even a clip of her on KZread hosting a show if you guys are interested.
Her father would tell the buffalo news "That's when Kristen's life really changed. She learned to play bass and wanted to be in a band."
She soon quit school and took up bass and started playing in a 3 piece called Janitor Joe that was part of the Minneapolis music scene.
Janitor Joe played angst ridden and loud music and that caught the attention of local indie label AmRep who signed the band and put out their debut record Big Metal Birds in 1992. It was while on tour with Janitor Joe that Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson attended one of their gigs. At this point in time Hole was without a bassist and needed one for their upcoming European Tour in 1993. Erlandson would tell Spin Magazine “I found Kristen in L.A. and said, “Come with me to meet Courtney [Love] and Patty [Schemel] when you get to Seattle.” She joined the band, she moved to Seattle, and that’s when all the songs came to life, literally. She was the star of her band and so she was bringing that to Hole and that created sparks in everybody; we all saw an even greater potential than before. Patty Schemel (pronounced at 0:20 mark here • Hole drummer Patty Sch... ) would add to Spin “Her playing was heavy, and she was knowledgeable, and she had command of her instrument. When she played, that was it: We knew.”
It was during that European tour that the band debuted material that was going to make their next record and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Sean Slade who worked on Hole’s second record Live Through This as an engineer and producer would recall to spin how once he heard the demos from the band he noticed that with the addition of Pfaff the band sounded more musical. The band would travel to Atlanta in October of 1993 to record the album.
Jim Merlis, a rep from Geffen Records, the band’s label would tell the buffalo news “"Kristen was really excited about making a record with Hole. She was so enthusiastic. She couldn't wait to start touring."
It was during the recording sessions for live through this that Erlandson and Pfaff were involved in a romantic relationship. In the book It was also speculated that peer pressure from her bandmates and friends in seattle led her to start using heroin.
Schemel would tell Spin: Kristen became Eric’s girlfriend, so they were tight. … Then there was me and my addiction with alcohol and drugs. Kristen and I would get together, and we were always trying to keep the amount of drugs we were doing secret. “Don’t tell Eric.” There were so many secrets. We were all frustrated, and we all had a lot of downtime. And so to deal with that, there was a lot of “hanging out.” I was frustrated. I wanted to play. I wanted to record. Erlandson would add in the same interview that during the making of the album he and Pfafff had broken up and there was noticable tension while recording the album
But it wasn’t just Erlandson and Pfaff who had tension between them as the bassist started to butt heads with frontwoman Courtney Love. Pfaff while new to the band was outspoken about musical ideas and that apparently rubbed Courtney Love the wrong way. Another factor contributing to Love’s resentment towards Pfaff at least according to the book Love and Death the murder of Kurt Cobain, was that the bassist had

She died when she relapsed. People become more adamant about staying clean as the temptation grows, not when the temptation subsides. But stupid people like to believe stupid things rather than the most likely things.

Kristen was a few years younger than me. We went to Boston College together. My roommate dated her for a while. I was a bartender at SPIT and she’d hang out and we’d talk music. A lovely, quiet young woman as I remember. It wasn’t until the late 90s that I made the connection - gone too soon. RIP Kristen.

@@enns5366 That's a really simplistic way of looking at it. Kurt had a raging heroin addiction that he didn't want to stop. He had the weight of the world on his shoulders and didn't want to be in his band anymore. Kristen was a recovering addict. She had been clean for a month (and had been previously hospitalized because of her addiction) and then unfortunately it sounds like she wanted one last hit and forgot that her tolerance levels had changed. As an ex H addict - now clean & sober many years - this doesn't surprise me in the least. Relapse is extremely likely, after any period of sobriety. It is FAR more likely than continued, unbroken sobriety. It is common to relapse many times before staying clean...and even then, you are always susceptible. Even after being clean over 20 years, one hit would likely take you right back where you left off. What's more, is that the most common form of fatal overdose is a hit following a period of abstinence. This is because the users' tolerance will have decreased significantly- and H is a drug where the slightest miscalculation in dosage is the difference between a weak hit...or overdose → death. Seeming "happy" in the sobriety period is also common...and confusing to family members watching on when they relapse, nevertheless. It's confusing to the addict, aswell! Basically it comes down to there being a hole (forgive me, I'm aware of the blatant pun ) that nothing but the drugs fills. No matter how happy you become in sobriety, the urge to use will always be there, gnawing away at you. Like a phantom limb...but worse...it's in your very soul. It feels like being incapable of feeling "happy", even when your life is objectively wonderful! Furthermore, it is typical to type to have a clean period while moving back in with parents....and then when the recovering addict goes out for the first time...the opportunity to satiate that gnawing urge to use often rears its' head. As much as I loathe Ms Love...I see there being no direct connection to Pfaf's death. Plenty of INDIRECT contributing factors, perhaps...but nothing direct.

As much as I dislike Courtney, there's no evidence she had a hand in Kristen's demise. Kristen returned to Seattle from Europe on June 13th. She was sober but did not have a sponsor. While packing, she found her drug kit and it sent her into relapse. Her alleged dealer lived in the same neighborhood, a seven minute walk according to Google Maps. This dealer was known for mixing Coke with H, which is the drug combination that turned up in her toxicology report. Kristen no longer had the tolerance level she possessed when she was a steady user, so the amount she ingested was fatal. A common mistake with former addicts. Absolute tragedy regardless.

He knew exactly what could easily happen when a clean person injects again. It gets worse if she didn't request it, and if any of the other factors apply. Unfortunately, the snoring he heard could have been the "death rattle". You get sober, you feel like your life is coming together, and you feel happy, yet there's that little voice that keeps telling you one last time won't hurt you. She was saying goodbye to Seattle and probably thought I'll have one more for the road. I lost my brother and my mother, both to overdoses, and they both passed during a relapse. I understand why her Mother doesn't want to accept it, but it's the most likely scenario. My question is, why wasn't an Autopsy done on such a young individual? The toxicology screen would confirm if it was an overdose or not.

Also, the human body develops a tolerance to drugs (and alcohol). With repeated and regular use, they just don't affect you as much as they used to. Sometimes (so I've been told), when people have been clean for a while and relapse, they take a dose that they normally could have handled in the past, but now that they've lost their tolerance, it's like giving a first timer a massive dose that a regular daily user would take.

Sorry, kids, but there probably isn't any conspiracy here. You all don't understand drugs so these crazy ideas start to make sense. But if you understood how those scenes are, you wouldn't wonder about it. I don't care what Pfaff's father said, she was an addict. You don't do heroin for a year recreationally. Everyone talks about what a great person she was as if being successful, happy, and driven means you'd never try drugs. A lot of people seriously underestimate the situation, think they can handle it. Especially when you're young. Despite that she kicked it, and probably without much effort. Which again, lead her to believe she could handle it. So she makes the biggest mistake any recovering druggie can do: visit someone still in the scene. Leaving Seattle and all those people behind WAS the best thing she could do. The mistake was going back, for any reason, and worse was meeting someone from that scene. Now she'd already kicked heroin and might have thought it wasn't a huge deal. Well Erlandson shows up and he's carrying and she thinks why not one more go at and have fun with my friend like we used to? This happens a lot. She takes the same kind of hit she had built up to. But the problem is that it's been out of her system for a bit now. Like when you've been drinking regularly it takes more to get you there but when you haven't had any in a while one drink sends you flying. Same thing. This is actually how quite a lot of OD's, especially fatal ones, happen. Everyone keeps saying the common thread here is Love. The common thread here is heroin.

The difference is a dead Cobain was worth a lot more then a live divorced one. I can understand this chick fucked up, but with Cobain, there's recordings of CL moaning and complaining about Cobain divorcing her and taking her off the will, saying that he's not gonna get away with it as well as many people mentioning Cobain was going to divorce her. Honestly, coming from someone that has nothing against suicides, if I wanted to kill myself, I'd make damn sure that bitch wasn't getting anything out of it. It's not uncommon for spouses to murder there "loved ones" for there own benefit.
