Predator sticks out of the NES library? The same library that included Alien 3, Rambo, Dirty Harry, Die Hard, Platoon, Robocop 1-2-3, The Terminator 1-2, Total Recall, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and more? :P Lots of cartoons & games based on R-rated movies back then.

This was my thought too. These films and games were frankly attractive to the young boys who dominated the game market at the time. I myself, despite being in a strict, religious family, remember being exposed to a lot of those things. I agree with the other comment that says Platoon is the weirdest of the bunch. That's a rather dark, serious Oliver Stone film and not quite the mainstream 80s action/horror film like the rest. Also, while not directly weird because its based on a cartoon: Toxic Crusaders. I mean, they made kids cartoon and game out of a Troma B-movie with gory violence and nudity, etc. Probably flew under the radar of a lot of parents who had never heard of the original.

The reason that non-game software never really took off on the NES was because of the price range. A Tarot card simulator is something that had a market, but you would have expected it to be selling on the PC for about what Nintendo charged third-party sellers for a cartridge. Taboo is fun if you can find it at a yard sale for a few bucks, but I wonder if anyone who paid full price for it felt satisfied.

what the hell is the situation with color a dinosaur? it’s going to be several years before jeremy parish gets to it in nesworks but goddamn I really wanna know the backstory there. like think of all the effort that went into programming & designing the game, getting the license from nintendo, manufacturing boxes & circuit boards & plastic cases, all for a worse version of a 25¢ coloring book. is it some sort of bizarre 5th dimensional money laundering scheme? like for every other bad game I at least get why they made it & thought it would sell. for color a dinosaur I have no clue

ok looking past the stuff like Platoon and Hudson Hawk and other R rated movies that got a NES game for some reason, the strangest game to exist on the NES imo is Gilligan's Island. The question I always ask when this game is mentioned is "Who was this made for?" Adults who watched it in the 60sas kids weren't gonna go out and get a Nintento b/c of this game and kids who were playing the NES weren't going to want a NES game based on tv show from the 60s. The game came out in 1990 and the show ended in 1967. 23 years between the game and the show ending, strange idea.

At least there was a cartoon called Gilligan’s Planet or something, and the game is still kind of generic. I think weirder was the game based on the three stooges, as it wasn’t that clear how to play it, and had references to black and white era episodes. Now that’s obscure.
