Pat the MID-Punk: 15 Years of Borderline Relevance

Ойын-сауық

In this video I expound on Pat the NES Punk's KZread career. Whether it be his attempt at AVGN-style videos, podcasts or other ventures, I can't think of a more mid video-game youtuber than Pat. He sorta-kinda made his mark but...mehhhh... not really... If it weren't for James Rolfe, I would argue, nobody would even know who this guy is.

I read every single one of these comments, I'm stuck at work and have that kind of time. So some things I'd like to point out after reading them all: 1. Yes I was aware about all the Jirard charity stuff while making this video. My point with bringing him up was pointing out how he was a peer of Pat but got way more successful because he had a far superior product (even though it's not my cup of tea). 2. Ok so I guess Video Game Years came out in 2012... it was still a dated format in 2012. Vh1's "I Love the 80's" was hot in like 2004, 8 years earlier. 3. Apparently Pat is also a re-seller. Multiple people have said he sells the stuff he finds at the flea-markets at conventions. 4. I'm aware Pat did a public service by pointing out the corrupt practices of WATA and the auction house being owned by the same people. With that being said it was still boring as fuck to listen to week in and week out. 5. It's true... I am just a jealous emo trying to bottom feed off of people more successful than me. 6. A channel called "Jenovi" has a better researched, less opinionated video about Pat that you can watch here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oKt7zrSDfpvOaNI.html, but if you like spicey hot takes, watch mine.... or watch both!

I always found Pat and Ian's "chemistry" hilarious. Pat's trying hard to make some boring topic interesting, and Ian's sitting slouched down, sighing and rolling his eyes before giving some generic, dismissive, contrarian take every single time. Then Pat chuckles like it's a joke and not Ian's entire existence, attempts a joke and laughs at his own joke, while Ian remains scowling and not making any eye contact. That description might come off like I hate it, but it's legit way the hell more entertaining than, for example, the Cinemassacre Podcast where everyone just smiles and nods and agrees with whatever generic boomer take Bimmy comes out with

Man, I'm feeling pretty out of touch. My friends and I loved The Video Game Years when it came out. It was a ton of fun learning new stuff, and hearing the opinions of people I watched on KZread. Also, i believe it WAS on Amazon for a time. I also was really interested in the WATA games controversy and some of the other stuff you said nobody cared about. Video game preservation, and companies not manipulating the market for goods I enjoy matters to me. Karl Jobst's videos on the subject have millions of views. But I'm in that 40-50 year old range you mentioned and people like me and our interests probably don't matter to you all that much. I do agree Pat seems pretty self interested, and not very likeable. I did meet him in Milwaukee years ago and had a nice chat with him though. Anyways, thanks for reading my comment.

Pat is like an actor who should never be a lead character. The best thing by far he ever did was that NWC video with James and it made me think that Pat's career would have been so much better if he were a recurring sidekick or antagonistic type character on AVGN. Instead he had his own series with soft takes on old games and C-level humor at best with poor audio and video even for the time. That NWC video gave Pat a huge thrust of visibility in the retro game scene during a boom period for the collecting hobby. There is no other classic Punk video that people talk about as some sort of golden age of Pat The NES Punk. The only other thing that ever got his name out there was when he and his friend had some nerdy, gatekeeper Comic Book Guy rant on their podcast

Not really, James has stated that games are not his real passion and he's more interested in making movies. The first instance was in 2012 in the episode _The Making of an AVGN episode_ in which he affirmed that he exaggerates the rants/comments about the games he reviews. He basically states that while out of character he might not have that big of a deal with the game he "reviews" he scripts his rants to be more entertaining and he finds the process of making an episode more interesting that the game he's ranting about. The second time was in 2015 when JonTron visited his video store in which he blatantly says that while he enjoys games his actual professional interest is film-making. He likes games, when Breath of the Wild was out he 100% completed it (minus the koroks) He plays Mario Maker with his daughters (he made videos showcasing the levels they made) and keeps a pretty large collection. But is more of a casual pleasure to him. His main interest has always been movies.

I was so busy with my music and tattooing I had never watched a KZread video in my life at that time. One day he invited his friend Pat to come visit the shop so he could introduce me. I was completely oblivious to who Pat was, and I noticed that Pat was offended that I never had heard of him. The shop I worked at was right next door to Luna games and met Ian also. Fast forward 8 years later I found KZread and fell in love with avgn it reminded me of being young and playing games. After awhile I remembered I had naturally met Ian and Pat. Small world.

The thing I like about Pat is he is just some dude. He does take me back to early KZread, he does more than just blab into a camera but he's not overly polished or "marketable". He's doing his own thing. I've met him at cons a few times, and he was nice enough to chat with. How well people take to his personality seems to be more based on if you lived in the northeast or not (which I do). I think his worst trait is he is really bad at reading from a script, after listening to the podcast for so long it's jarring hearing him try to read a pre-written thing with how stiff and stilted his delivery is. If you find him entertaining fine, if you don't he's literally just some dude move on with your damn life and do something more productive.

The N64 book Pat is "writing" is also controversial. He made the decision to have the games reviewed by a team by playing them via PC emulation. We're not ever talking Everdrives on original hardware which would be fine. We're talking via PC emulation. N64 games are notoriously hard to emulate. Even Nintendo doesn't do it right with the Switch online.

You're a little off on the graded games thing. There used to be this forum called NintendoAge which is where pretty much all video game collectors hung out before Facebook and all the other social media places existed. It was the only place to get info about the rarity of different games, variants, foreign games, etc. A lot of the people there hated him because he was one of the only guys calling out some of the more "prominent" collectors who were constantly scamming other collectors. The forum was controlled by the very people who later created WATA, who are now involved in a class action lawsuit for running a scam where they own both the grading company AND the auction house that evaluates them. Him calling out WATA is probably one of the only respectable things he's ever done. He's actually been very vocal from day one about how video games are NOT an investment, and how he's against people collecting them for monetary gain, so your statement about him being so interested because he wants to retire off his games or whatever is not really accurate. It's more about him getting the last laugh on the same people he used to argue with online 15-20 years ago (and rightfully so, trust me, I was on there too and those people are the biggest pieces of shit on the planet). Everything else you said was pretty much correct though. He really only has a "career" because he was on KZread before anyone else and he basically weaseled his way into Cinemassacre universe. He's mentioned before that he got some huge inheritance that he used to move out to San Diego and buy a condo, so he doesn't really even have to work (which made it even more annoying when he constantly complained about being "exhausted" from going to conventions). He isn't funny whatsoever and it's extreme cringe whenever he tries to be. Even listening to him talk on a podcast is annoying because it sounds like he has a mouthful of water or something. He's also widely known to be a total prick to his fans in person at conventions. I don't think I've ever read a single positive story about someone meeting him, it's always "I said Hi to him at a convention and he was an asshole".

Pat's grudge with NA seems borne more out of, idk, jealousy/competition than it does some sort of righteous anger. Ian called Pat out as a shelf collector so I'm not sure what separates him too greatly from the collectors on NA. Retro games were always going to blow up by virtue of supply/demand and it was aided by KZreadrs putting a spotlight on "hidden gems". The WATA stuff is more of a push to get games closer to the realm of comic and other collectibles money-wise. It will happen over time but they were definitely caught with their pants down and made the whole community look way more scummy than it actually is. A lot of collectors/speculators are obnoxious as hell and scumbags like WATA, but I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I just stumbled on your channel and have a lot to say: 1. I love Unsolved Mysteries too. As well, I have the damn vinyl. Hell yeah to you on that. 2. I like that you arent afraid to give your opinion. A lot of content seems very veiled, due to youtube diplomacy, but you dont seem to mind that shit. I think that's great. 3. I think your filming method could use some improvement. It's pretty obvious that you're reading off your script next to the camera and it doesn't help that you sigh and rush your way through it. Maybe if you just wrote down key points and then waxxed a bit more in a sincere manner? Idk. 4. I agree that Pat is mid. At one point, I streamed through his entire nes punk series as muzak while I did other shit. I've also occasionally listened to/watched the CUpodcast. He's very meh overall, but sometimes that's what can be endearing to people. It's kind of comforting. That being said, yeah, his jokes are bad, he's weird in very weird ways, and insert everything about how he presents himself and sounds. He also comes off as a bit arrogant. 5. Ya think maybe making this kind of content is a bit... idk... fucking mean? I mean, what is the point of attempting to psychoanalyze someone and put them down, when they haven't really done anything egregious? Dude could be dealing with some terrible shit and then he's gotta see someone go online and talk about how he's worthless and sucks? What does this accomplish? Seriously, I mean it. What does this do? I just dont get why we all gotta treat each other like this. 7. Not everything has to be a generational generalization. Shit is so overdone. "Der gen z be like dis. Bruh boomers be like dat. Duh millimeowls!" Chill ya'll. Everyone is fucking different. 8. Not trying to be an ass. I rarely comment on videos. But this struck a chord with me. The seems like a pretty critical video for a youtuber thats kind of fallen off recently. He has managed to go this long without getting tied up in Any controversy or any bad blood with other creators. Seems like a decent enough guy. I used to watch the podcast and i also think its no longer entertaining enough to continue watching and his other content doesn't hold up to scrutiny. There is nothing wrong with being a c or d Tier youtuber though. I just think its strange you would want to make this whole video about him and not really have much to say.

Holy shit. I never thought I’d see someone talk about Pat the NES punk videos. I was into their content for a little bit a few years back, he had some okay ideas. Making a storyline out of looking for the NWC was amusing but after that…eh

He had some good moments with Flea Market Madness and hanging out with Frank. That was pretty much my favourite content from him because Pat who was always trying too hard by not trying at all. His skits were cringe, but I enjoyed some of his CUPodcast in the early years. When they actually cared about resellers. Pat would have to try to get anything out of Ian, and I never understood why he didn't get someone else in there. I dropped out during the Diablo fiasco, checked in during the Intellivision disaster, and then Wata for one of the hundredth times haha. The SNES version looked sweet, but they were way too expensive for what they are. I also remember Gaming Historian trashing them and decided against the SNES version.

I listened to every CUPodcast for the first few years.. then i realized Pat had no idea what he was talking about, especially when it came to modern gaming. Ian just got more and more miserable as time went on.. I assumed he stuck around because he made more money being on the show than being an assistant manager at a used video game shop.

The worst thing about Pat to Me is that He feels Entitled to a Large Fanbase because He's been Putting out Videos for so long. I think the PS2 is one of the Best Systems ever made just because it was the Perfect intersection of Technology and the Market was at a Point where Games didn't cost so much to actually Make so we got some really interesting Games out of it. Ian told a Story that I wanted to Hear the end of but He Refused to actually Finished the Story. it was Called the Ranch Dressing Story. it was a Story about how Someone was obsessed with Ian and made an RPG Maker Game about him and the one time He went over to His House he found a Packet of Ranch Dressing in this Dude's Bathroom.

Great video and series. A bigger youtuber Pat has some kind of feud is Rich from ReviewtechUSA, which was also entertaining and a result of the Amico drama. I remember when Ian tried to explain the Playstation Controller to Pat and was really annoyed 😅

Haven't finished watching the vid yet but I can remember how this started. When Nintendoage was still around James and/or one of his associates came on the forums asking for rare games and wanting them at lower prices. He got some fire for that. Not sure if any record of the forums is out there but I remember calling them out on it. Pretty sure that's how he connected with Pat.

I enjoy Pat and Ian, and like putting their pod on in the background. Mid is probably not a terribe take, he's definitely not for everyone. Frank really is the breakout star of the channel, just for being the strange hippie boomer that he is. For me, being a more casual vintage gaming guy, it's an interesting view into a very strange world of people and what their personal piccadilos are.

Pat and his podcast cohost banned me and a lot of other viewers commenting on their channel when they brought up a terrible list of worst NES games written by the same guy who dropped & covered Russia-Gate (they explicitly brought up Russia-Gate, not people in his comments), and people in the comments were questioning that writer's (Seth Abramson) integrity and questioning why they were bringing up politics.

I keep hearing stories from different people of NES Pat almost getting kicked out of retro gaming cons because security and guests keep thinking he was a homeless man who sneaked in. If half of those stories are true. It is pretty sad. This would never happen with an irate gamer. People outside of gaming KZread at least know he exists. I honestly blame Ian for destroying Pat's podcast and channel.

I rarely comment but wanted to on this one. I found your channel from the Red Cow crew and watched your interview over there. Enjoy the takes, agree with most but not all but the best part about your videos is your opinion actually seems genuine which these days seems hard to find. Folks constantly saying what their audience wants to hear vs letting us decide. I lost touch with Pat, the CU Podcast, everything and I was a Patreon supporter! (TBH I traded Pat & Ian for Frankie and EJ) It's like they gradually changed into the thing they originally set out not to become. Anyways, keep up the good work, you got a new subscriber here.

Pat Contri was bigger in the early to the later half of the 2010's. There was a channel called RetroWare TV. Pat is more of a information provider. Pat was big at the conventions back in the late 2000's & 2010's. But he called out the Coleco Chameleon.
