I think the term refurbished has changed in recent years. Refurbished used to mean you cleaned the console, and made it look nice and shiny. Now, it's apparently you open it up, clean it completely, replace capacitors, and whatever else. I think the expectations of what the word means has changed. In reality, DKoldies should just stop using the term refurbished. I do, however, also agree in the sentiment that this is because it's a slow week, and drama channels are looking and fiending for drama and clicks. I've never bought from DKoldies, but I have browsed their site in the past. Yes, their prices are high, at least compared to the North American market. I'm not sure if Pal collectors find their prices to be too high depending on the game, and what the Pal version costs by comparison. International selling could also be a factor in their prices. Obviously, people are paying the prices asked, or they wouldn't have been in business for as long as they have. I've already seen people posting the "DKoldies scammed me" videos on all of DKoldies twitter threads to harrass them. If they are scamming, then shame on them, however, bashing them has become a trend, and mostly because KZreadrs were bored, and needed drama for clicks which is a shame. Now people will buy a system from them, just to make more "DKoldies is teh scam" videos for drama clicks, and even if the consoles aren't dirty inside, I'm sure youtubers never embellish things for clicks, nor do they ever mislead or set things up. I'm sure they would never swap consoles for a dirtier one just for a video. That would never happen.

DKOldies is not a scam, never has been and never will be. People need to look up what a scam really is. It's not overcharging for goods and services. You can call them dishonest or a fraud in regards to what is or is not refurbished but they are not a scam in any conceivable way. If you have a problem with their products and feel they lied about the condition, call the better business bureau. A scam is a practice used to take your money, usually with the promise of a better return, only to be robbed out of your money and in some cases, out of your identity. A lot of the time you see these people from other countries that have no extradition treaties with your home country, so they steal from you and not be held responsible. Be careful labelling something a scam without real legal proof, it can lead to a defamation of character suit.

To be fair, some people that complain about DK Oldies have a very extreme view on what counts as refurbished. Like replacing perfectly good capacitors on relatively recent devices (outside the cap plague era), replacing thermal paste that's still functions properly, replace a perfectly fine original laser, and all that kind of stuff. A lot of stuff doesn't require changing but loads of people (especially new collectors/players with no tech background) have this idea replacing components is always good and is a requirement with refurbishment, even when the new parts are of known lower quality. I've had so many new collectors complain about shit like that, I tend to take the time to actually go in depth as to why I did what I did however. Granted a few examples of their are off, but the 2 I've seen could be chalked up to simple error and the people complaining about it I've yet to see actually go through reporting it and how DK oldies handles such issues. If they give they require to ship it back while they cover shipping or something along those lines it'd be perfectly fine. Prices on the other hand are crazy, but people apparently pay for it.

@@relo999 people pay it because they think it was cleaned and looked over, the scam is really in sending out units they only checked if it runs without as much as opening it and calling it refurbished when it's not even opened and slapping on a sticker (on the original sticker) to prevent the customer from taking a peek without losing the send back period. it's not so much about if they replaced all caps that the hubbub is about - it's that they didn't even take a look. well there's the usual americana sales tactics of saying shit's -50% when it's just the normal only price they've sold it. the SCAM with the pricing part is also using influencers and putting shit on tiktok saying that it is a good deal, when it is not.

@@lasskinn474 Well the videos complaining about their refurbishing have pretty much all been complaining parts that shouldn't need replacing, if they still function well, not being replaced. With 2 having other issues that I would argue is an issue with refurbishing, but that depends on their return policy if it's actually an issue. From what I've seen they do clean inside the consoles they sold and seem to do the bare minimum of preventative care, which is honestly what I expect if I'd ever bough from a store and they claim it's refurbished. Granted I might have seen different videos and reviews than you. As for pricing, it's on the consumer in my eyes. Not hard to shop around and them claiming it's a good deal is just marketing. No sensible salesmen will claim to their consumers that they have bad prices. So them claiming it's a good deal I can't hold against them, if they didn't they wouldn't be doing their job. I think one of the reasons DKOldies has been getting so much attention is because they've been pushing their advertising a lot more lately. Google something like 'retro video games' and DKO is like the 2nd or 3rd choice that pops up (my bet is they hired an SEO firm or something). Combine that with the big push from their social media (particularly TikTok), and you get a lot more people just discovering how over-priced they are.

Completely missed the point as to why people are mad about DKOldies… It’s not because of the prices they set. Everyone already knows they mark up the price way too much for their stuff. It’s the fact that they charge more money for systems that are “refurbished”, when in reality they barely touch them before reselling. They barely even clean them, much less crack them open and actually fix and refurbish the consoles. If they gave descriptions of the issues these consoles have and advertised them as “pre-owned” or “used”, and still charged so much for them, it would be fucked up, but at that point it’s on the person buying them. It’s the fact that they are lying about the conditions of their consoles, and instead of taking responsibility and making moves to do better, they dance around the issue.

The problem I have with DKOldies is you don't know what you're getting, their photos are stock photos only and you don't know what kind of label damage, manual damage etc. you're getting. (I've only bought from them on eBay) It's the same issue with lukie and gamestop. If you get an imperfect game you can bitch about it and get it replaced but they bank on you not wanting to hassle over it. Small eBay sellers and local game shops are WYSIWYG.

Also all the Super Mario Bros games taught me patience and how to regulate inner rage to accomplish a goal because it requires a pragmatic approach. However, I do believe each individual's brain processes video games differently, so some may use it as a tool to learn and others may just use it as an escape. Definitely a case by case situation.

Love this video: the variety of questions was really fun. Regarding the educational aspect of video games, I agree that games aren't necessarily the best way to learn school subjects, but I imagine that they can be helpful to people trying to learn a second language; I began to feel more comfortable with Japanese after playing DQXIS, Yakuza 7, and Yakuza 0 with Japanese audio and English subtitles. Hearing that much dialogue with that amount of story/character investment helped. I think where games can really shine is in imparting healthy life lessons, ala myths. Almost every game has a literary theme now, but instead of just passively reading or watching it, the player actively participates, which makes the lesson all the more potent. Even games where the story isn't the primary focus can do this well: A Hat in Time (for example) teaches that relationships are redeemable; that working positively with others (even if the aims are selfish) and treating them as they're your equals is better morally than trying to force your vision of good on everyone else. Lots of other stories have focused on that same lesson, but many of them come off as ham-fisted; whereas A Hat in Time only reveals this at the final boss battle, where it can have the largest effect.

Also virtual pin lacks the ability to make a game more challenging by adjusting outlane posts, taking rubbers away or lessening/increasing the overall slope of the machine. Finally, the shot accuracy in virtual pin does not have the variance that a real machine has. That all being said whatever gets and keeps people playing pinball is okay with me.

By the 1970's and 1980's they were a big toy maker and like the other toy makers they were interested in video games. They were also making other big toys in the 1980's like Cabbage Patch Kids.

The DKOldies scam isn't pricing, it's the fact that they ship out untouched consoles as refurbished.

As others have said. I don’t think the “scam” label came from just the price, rather the price in combination with them selling something that’s “refurbished” with their seal of approval on it yet the device is completely swirled out with scratches, packed to the brim with dust and thermal paste completely dry and cracked out. With that said, their prices are bullshit as well and pray on people that either have more money than sense or simply don’t know any better. As far as I’m concerned they’re part of the problem with the retro game market prices becoming inflated AF. If they can’t sustain how large their business is without charging obscene prices maybe they should review how they’re operating..

I haven't seen the segment yet, but I find all of the DKOldies content hilarious. A store massively overpricing items is not a scam. It's just a bad store with a large presence. Stores like these exist everywhere. The simple solution is to not give them any of your business.

Couple of thoughts on the collecting thing we all gotta do what works best for us dont make urself feel bad for gettin good deals we all have hobbies i collect many different things whether its old magazines vinyl movies ext you do have to find the balance that works for you.. i agree with ian on the dk oldies thing I'm 23 and while at times i think people my age dont get the credit we deserve in some regards bc alot of us are very astute and mature. I get why older generations make fun of some are age bc seems like they can't think for themselves there's always some new little trend everyone has to follow but that's been going on for decades so..

Controversy isn't the pricing or at least not entirely. It's the liberal use of the term "refurbish" when they haven't even bothered to clean the thing and selling you stuff at 2x ebay while bundling consoles with shitty 3rd party controllers and questionable power bricks.

  • @Cooldadder

    @Cooldadder

@@devilmikey00 Oh, that's interesting. Surprisingly, a lot of the coverage I've seen has focused more on pricing. Makes sense, if you're paying a premium price for stuff, you have every right to expect components to be in good condition and as described. Slipping in cheap 3rd party stuff as a bait and switch is definitely unscrupulous unless it's clearly stated that's what being offered.

I compare dk with Lukie and they're about a buck or 2 on most things. I usually buy things like cheap nes games for my collection and I'll often check ebay and find the prices are usually the same. I have had bad luck with ebay so I don't try and save 50 cents when I can guarantee i get what I want in 3 days vs bidding or buying now. Just check around. We can send $12 on Starbucks, but if we buy a game for $8 on dkoldies instead of maybe $5 plusses shipping from ebay... we're being scammed?

I’ve only had good experiences with DK oldies. I got into GameCube collecting before the 20 year nostalgia cycle hit it, and it started to get expensive, and I bought a few games and accessories off DK oldies because the retro stores near me barely stocked GameCube stuff at all, and the DK oldies prices were on par with ebay prices, at least for GC stuff, and I was very impressed by their customer service the one time I had to use it.

Learning how to budget is key for that if you aren't used to it. But its true, some people can't make enough money to save anything really for a rainy day. Only thing you can really do is try to find a better paying job in that case, but if you do you should live the exact same why you are now so that the increased income can be used to pay down debts and go into savings/investments.

dk oldies showed up on my radar because the youtube algorithm kept throwing dk promos in the 'youtube shorts' section, multiple videos everyday. one of my common video tags was 'video games' or retro so i'd assume anyone who commonly watched retro stuff had seen them in the shorts section[or more likely they've gained an audience through tiktok] and thus you've got people googling to see if their legit than mocking their prices without much of a background in business. sooo yeah i feel like they've just became a 'content creator topic' due to their increased exposure through current social media sites. yes they're overpriced, but like any store that specializes in one thing there's inevitably an upcharge for the customer convenience factor : for example most the band-aids/gauze/aspirin/shampoo/etc from cvs[or jewel] can be bought at a dollar store for a 1/6th the price. the main negative i can give them is the inconsistent approach to 'refurbishing,' but that's honestly nothing new in the second-hand market just look up gamestop refurbs on yt.

My local retro store's owner told me the he would sell hundreds of nes consoles to the owner of dk oldies. He would pay more than what the local store would sell them for. This is a random store in Massachusetts, so dkoldies must buy tons of stuff from tons of places. If he's paying a lot for it that's a reason he sells it for so much? BTW I don't shop at dkoldies, but I see it as a good place for a non gamer or someone brand new to the hobby to go and buy something and get a warranty etc.
