Vocal ANALYSIS of Chester Bennington singing "Given Up" Live

I always want to take an emotional performance over a studio version of a song if I can help it, and this is one of those instances. I am overjoyed I got to hear and feel Chester's pain in this performance of "Given Up" by Linkin Park. So chilling, and so revealing!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Linkin Park performing "Given UP" for the first time.

It's not a character, it's HIM. That's the sad part. His suicide shocked everyone, but he'd been telling us how he'd been feeling from the very beginning. Those emotions were 100% real and 100% his. He didn't need to act anything out, and that's what makes listening to his music that much more gut wrenching now that he's gone. It wasn't acting, it was catharsis.

The thing is, with Chester, it’s not a character, it’s actually him. When he hits himself in the head, it’s not an act…it’s how he actually feels. It’s the reason he’s no longer here, and it’s not only tragic, but a massive loss to music.

He actually lost the scream this time and had to break when he dropped down - normally he carries it through before going back to clean. However, this is the most emotional performance I've seen from Chester - and that's saying something. It's understandable that his technique would slip slightly. I can't imagine the headspace he was in. He gave 110% to every single performance both physically and mentally.

I'm not entirely sure how i got here, but here i am. You commented at the end of this video about how you could see people finding it cathartic to find music like this. That is extremely true. I wouldn't still be here without Chester. In highschool my mental health plumeted. Long story short. Chester is who saved me. His music, his lyrics and the emotion in his voice. He made me feel like i wasn't alone. And i was, and still am, somehow able to align myself with him. When i listen to his songs, it's almost like i'm along side him. When he does his incredible screams of anger or rage or sings his words of sadness and loneliness. I can feel his emotions release, into the air, just free and gone. What's more, my emotions go with his. It's like his voice tears the emotion he's projecting out of me and is released along side his own. This ability turned out to be double edged however. When Chester passed, all my thoughts focused on one thing. If he couldn't beat the demon (depression), how could i? He saved my life and i have no doubt, thousands of others. However, in the end, he succumbed to the demon. I fell into a dark hole when he passed. Much like the one he pulled me out of to begin with. I ended up seeing a psychologist to try to get help. I can't say i'm good now, but the psychologist made me focus, instead of what Chester and I had in common, what makes us different. What Chester went through and what made his situation entirely different to my own. It doesn't mean i can beat the demon. It's a fight that lasts a lifetime. What it means is that i can use Chester's music just as i always did. As a salvation. Without comparing his struggle to my own. We all have our own struggles. Just because one person lost, doesn't mean we will all lose. In life, every time you go to sleep and wake up the next day, is a day you beat the demon. Let the darkness be dark, Chester is my light.

I saw a post somewhere that basically boiled down to “if you have depression and you’re still here, that means you’re not struggling with depression. Depression is struggling with you”. And that is a very empowering way to see it. We don’t need to be defined by depression, and of course that doesn’t mean depression shouldn’t be accounted for in our lives, but ultimately it doesn’t have to kill us. It’s all about management. And if we perceive ourselves as more powerful than our dark thoughts and find out ways to remember that, then we can make it. But also, one time I heard Chester say that the space between his ears was the worst place to be, and that really sums it up. So try not to be in your head too much.

Chester had exceptional control of his extreme vocal techniques, he was doing his screams in a safe and healthy manner. They gave 300 concerts a year and he still performed excellent without a break or a trauma (except that time when he broke his hand falling from the high rack in the beginning of a song and still performed it fully without a break and then finished the full concert as planned)

We probably won't see anyone on the level of Chester for a very long time. Part of it was pure talent but the other side of it was the level of torcher his soul had been through and was going through. Trying to reach his level is in many ways not a goal one should want. Don't get me wrong there's plenty of artists out there who are just as good but I don't think anyone is able to put the pure emotion into their singing the way he did

To this day, just as I did when he was alive, I still can't listen to this song without sobbing. It quite literally saves my life and the lives of my 7 kids. IMO it's absolutely impossible to not feel the truly raw emotion in his voice - the hurt, anguish, profound sadness and crippling depression. I first heard this song when I finally hit rock bottom in a 16yr-long abusive marriage, and it felt as though he was projecting and speaking directly to exactly what I was feeling. The very day I first heard this song was the day I slipped into suicidal thoughts, and the only thing that kept me from following through was knowing what future would be in store for my children...they would have lost the only person that literally and physically stood between them and physical harm. Not long after that day, my ex-husband called me from the ship(Navy) and said, "I'll be home soon, and I'll be retired. That means I'll be home, Every. Day. DO. YOU. UNDERSTAND. ME???". I knew what that meant - he was finally gonna kill me. He was gonna make good with his threats. And that's when I decided to call my parents, tell them the truth of what all had been going on, and I asked to come back home with my 7 kids. 2 days later I was on the road with my kids driving from VA to TX, had a large moving van packed with our belongings, and all his stuff in trash bags in a storage building. And I haven't looked back since. This song is one of the things that snapped me out of it and helped to give me the courage to leave.

I don’t remember if you reacted to their song “one more light”. If you haven’t that is a very nice soft version of Chester’s voice. It is a song about loosing someone. He dedicated it to his good friend Chris Cornell of sound garden who took his own life. Very powerful emotion if you watch it live or even the tribute video they made with video of Chester being the genuine goofy soul he was. Also do another idea their song “Heavy” is along the same lines. They give you another end of his vocal spectrum.

What hes actually using is a life time of pain, mental instability, love and sorrow.. What he is doing is screaming for help while working through the overflow of emotions and trauma that he has endured... Ive seen quite a few bands live in my time, but Linkin park was by far one of the best.. that man bared it all on stage, never shyed away from those feelings and the whole time he was reaching out to the fans, making eye contact and what felt like a personal connection in but a brief moment.. As he was walking the stage, looking at the fans.. there was twice he jumped off the stage and gave water to fans along the gate.. and 3 times he flagged security to run water to people at the gates.. myself and the woman I was with were one of the couples that he did this for.. There was also this guy that stood nearly a foot raller than myself, directly behind us.. he had thrown or knocked people to the side to make his way to the gates. Now idk if who ever is reading this has been to a concert, but when you are against the gates, there is a whole sea of people behind you that seem to press you right against the bars.. Nakita stood directly infront of inbetween my arms.. at the time she was one of a few people that could actually jump around lol.. anyways.. her jumping pissed off the guy behind us exause it was blocking his view.. so he started pushing, elbowing etc.. being a right deuche nozzle.. when Chester had walked that part of that stage and saw Nakita jumping, he gave her a huge smile, started jumping too.. then the deauche hit me again and grabbed her by the hair.. No sooner did that happen.. Nakita jumped back up, threw the biggest elbow backwards I have ever seen.. and cracked him right in the nose.. before I could even register what happened next, Security had jumped the gate, grabbed the dude and threw him over the bars.. Nakita told me to look at the stage, Chester and Mike had this.look on their faces like "holy shit!!"😂😂 And thats when he jumped down security dumped a bottle on my head.. I later found out it was because the dudes nose decided to old faithful on the back of my head and shirt. And another one tilted a newly opened bottle so we could get some.. Anyways.. very awesome experience and memory, of VERY amazing men and band.
