I was a freshman in high school when his life ultimately ended. I cried for days i grew up with this man but never was old enough to go to a show. I still remember watching the one more light KZread premiere and crying in school while watching it.

I was in middle school when Hybrid Theory came out, that and Meteora were literally what got me through high school. I 100% know that if it weren't for Chester and LP, I would not be here.

@@piinkkranger i was born in 03 and my mom loved LP she would listen to them all day long so I grew up listening to the music and it was part of my everyday life. The first year after Chester passed it hurt too bad to listen to the music. It still hurts to listen to the music because not only do i feel the music but I know how it ended.

@@jorgeherrera1074 I learned about a decade after high school that I had depression and anxiety. Before that I was around people who thought depression was "just being sad." I've gone through a lot of therapy and finally feeling better. I just mean that at the time, this was the only thing I had to validate what I was feeling. 💙

I’m not ashamed to say that I almost cried hearing his voice again. It still doesn’t quite feel like he’s really gone.

I had tickets to the concert in Dallas that was supposed to be 3 weeks after he died 😢

After he died, I went back and listened to their entire catalog. Every song hit so much harder. "Crawling in my skin, these wounds they will not heal" "One step closer to the edge, and Im about to break" "I tried so hard and got so far, but in the end, it doesnt even matter" "i want to let go of the pain ive felt so long, i want to heal, i want to feel like im close to something real, somewher i belong" "id rather be all alone... cause i can see, the very worst part of you is me" "its so much easier to go than face all this pain here all alone" "You all assume im safe here in my room...clutching my cure I tightly lock the door...Ill paint it on the walls, cause im one at fault, ill never fight again, and this is how it ends" "take everything from the inside and throw it all away" "tried to give you warning but everyone ignores me, nobody's listening" "ive become so numb...ive become so tired" He was crying for help for 17 years.

I lost my brother to suicide and whilst it was me who loved Linkin Park rather than him, Chester echo's everything I have felt in life, even when coping with that loss. I can barely listen to Chester without wanting to cry, for him, for my brother, for myself, and for that reason alone I will always love him.

@@veridico84 Thank you, i'm sorry you had to experience that kind of loss also. Losing anyone you love is heartbreaking, but there is profound sense of intense guilt which is inherited by those left behind after suicide which I wouldn't wish on anyone. I try to reassure myself that at the very least, they are no longer in pain, which is the bare minimum you can wish for with anyone you love.

Chester is a very underrated vocalist, her statement "His back breathing will help his voice support for years..." ...it hurts...

Agreed I grew up with Linkin Park, I'm 25 so they were there my entire life because everyone in my family except my Mom loved them so my older siblings always had them on, and as I got older and started getting depressed and I started listening more to the lyrics LP became something relatable and something that made me feel less alone because Chester felt the same way I did, and anytime I'm starting to feel like lets say rage quitting life to sugarcoat it, I just go right back to Linkin Park for comfort and to help release the stress and tension that makes it hard to keep on going, they certainly aren't a cure there's still time when nothing can stop me from feeling like I can't go on any longer but they still help and are still a comfort, every member of Linkin Park will always be my heroes for helping me get through the worst times.

I once heard someone say that Chester's voice was, "Grief made manifest." I feel like that encapsulates so much of his singing. Rest in Peace Chester, you were a colossal part of my life and formative years.

Listening to Linkin Park as a depressed teenager was like hearing your own internal monologue put into words. That not only Chester, but every other person listening and singing along understood you. That feeling is a big part of how I made it through those years, and I'll never forget the impact this band had on me.

As a 41 year old man, hearing this song transports me back into my teenage room and mind space. And the emotions, and the frustration of not being able to vocalize them or to feel heard. And the regret from angry outbursts. That sensation of a scream just filling your core, needing to be released.

If I have one regret in this life it’s that I missed the opportunity to hear Chester and linkin park perform live.

The studio live performance when he had black hair was beast and also cuts out any profanity so that’s the best version to react to in my opinion

The thing that impressed me seeing LP live was the fact that Chester could maintain that intensity through the entire evening. It's one thing recording an album, having plenty of vocal rest between takes / songs, etc, but this dude could just belt all night long on stage. RIP legend.

The day his death was announced is one I'll never forget. It still hurts so bad whenever I hear his voice, but he also still gives me a lot of strength to this day. It's bittersweet, and I genuinely hope his soul is free from pain. He endured too much.

When she said his singing technique will carry him through many years, I almost broke down.

The way you talk about Chester and his voice... it genuinely brings tears to my eyes, seeing you light up at his voice and appreciate everything we, the fans, have always known but couldn't always quantify. You give a voice to how he made us feel, how he captured a generation's pain.

im 35 years old. and i can honestly say that in my teens i NEEDED Linkin Park, it was kinda like the voice you wished you had and the feelings you tried to understand but put to lyrics. They really were the soundtrack to my life in the teens and i still can get very emotional listening to Linkin Park to this day. Remembering what i felt back then and realizing how i evolved into who i am today. Rest In Peace, Chester. We love you

Linkin Park got me through the death of my father when i was only 13.. im 34 now. I will never forget the impact Chester had on my life during that time.

Now you know why us Linkin Park fans love Chester. His voice is amazing!

Chester was a good friend of my daughter when they were in high school...in Phoenix, Az. A bunch of great kids in the theater program. His band while in high school played for us from the bottom of my dry swimming pool!! Little did I imagine he would progress to such fame. And then...to loose him. My daughter posted in their private group....that she wished fame had not separated him from the group...that in school they got each other through tough times by climbing up on the roof of the theater and talking it out.

Chester live was always raw, like an exposed nerve. It was like he was channeling his emotions directly into the mike, pain, love, loathing you didn't hear it you felt it.

The interpretation I had of Linkin Park's lyrics and music when I was a teenager and listening to Hybrid Theory and Meteora for the first time are VERY different to my understanding now 20 years later, especially in light of learning more about Chester's journey through life.

Same. As a teenager I wrote Linkin Park off eventually as a load of angsty emo bollocks. But coming back as an adult, after some more life experience, and also given how Chester died, you realise that those lyrics weren't just trying to be edgy...They were real thoughts and feelings and the music was just trying to express them, reach out, and deal with them.

“Numb” and many of their other songs give a glimpse into Chester’s pain and should have been a clear warning. Beautiful, but so much pain fueling his passion. It is often those in the most pain and internal suffering that we are drawn to. The last show in my area that LP was supposed to play got rained out and I never got another chance to see them before he took his own life. If you have any thoughts of being alone or hurt this much, please talk to someone. Life is too precious to waste.

I agree, that's the one reason why i feel listening to the album version is a bit more true to him at his peak, since he'd have all his strength to push into the song that way. Or maybe a live performance of the song where he's not been singing and screaming for 8+ songs already hehe

Totally agree. Would recomend the Chris Cornell Memorial performance of One more Light. Both showcasing his clean, fresh voice, but also showing just how much emotion he could put into his voice.

well yeh you guys are right that it was towards the end of a gig, but also this was during the time in his career when his voice was really deteriorating and getting ripped up. It wasn't long after this that he stopped screaming completely and started singing everything clean because he just completely fucked his voice. Elizabeth had a bad take on it being healthy based on him going back to cleans after a scream because his style seriously fucked his voice. He went years performing without pushing his classic scream and it wasn't until about a couple of years before he died that he started adding screams back in to his gigs in the way he did when we were all younger, but even then he still favoured the cleans. I think this had a lot to do with why the band went to more of a pop like sound.

Mike and Chester were a perfect team. The “tuning” you heard in the beginning is Mike giving Chester his cues for keys to sing in

Ive heard somewhere that during the production of this particular song, the takes was so much since he’s breaking down due to the purest and closest of the song with what he’s experiencing. For so long i only know that chester sings a great song but actually he’s expressing his depression. Rest in peace

This song was actually written by Mike about a friend that had addictions....Chester was still struggling with addiction and depression while recording this album. It took a few takes to record this due to Chester breaking down. His addiction at the time almost ended the band

part of my heart and my youth died with Chesters passing. it was the only celebrity death that hit me hard. Some of the best artists who sing like this and compse sone of the best lyrics and songs are the most tortured souls. we miss you Chester, you'll live on in our memories x

He warned us so many times. In so many songs. And it still hit like a ton of bricks, because we never actually saw it coming. RiP Chester.

Yea. it felt like their first 3 albums had a lot of song that could be seen as either a cry for help or a way to release tension and express himself. but i was like 10 when hybrid theory came out so even tho i knew the words were kinda sad, i wasnt thinking that this person needed help. Chester was a vocal superhero to me growing up, his vocals (along with matt's from A7X) were a gateway to my appreciation for heavier and heavier vocals over the years. i will always remember him for getting me into screaming 🤘

Another one to do also is: Crawling-One more light. Now that Chester has passed, this one really tugs at me. It's such an intimate performance. I'm so happy you are doing Linkin Park. My favorite band from their beginning. Thank you. Miss you Chester...

I was going to suggest this as well. It is definitely a must for many reasons.

He was such a incredible voice to so many, I cried when I heard he had taken his own life.

His voice was so unbelievable honestly..

For a great contrast in Chester's vocal ability and singing styles, listen to One More Light, The Messenger, Iridescent, Leave Out All The Rest, and Shadow of the Day and then listen to Victimized, Given Up, Crawling, War, and Don't Stay. Just to name a few. His voice his everything from A to Z and beyond!

If you enjoyed the last scream here, you NEED to listen to the song "Given Up" also, Chester did vocals on a song called "Cross Off" - Mark Morton that was the last recording Chester did. The music video pays homage to Chester by leaving the mic stand empty but the band does the performance. 10/10 best vocals from Chester. May he rest in peace.

"Given Up" by far an absolute favorite there....and although Mike does a lot of the singing/rapping on Bleed It Out, it still feels like Chester did the better part of the writing and hell just the chorus alone is enough to pull my heart strings!!!

When he starts out he pulls your attention in. Sound of true hurt being used in his songs. You feel the raw emotions. Then when he lets go it used to make my chest tight as if you had held onto so much pain that you are ready to bust. That burn of releasing your frustrations, anger, and pain comes. You can let it out with him. If only to breathe for a moment. I'll always love his work. His music hit home. Made you feel like you wasn't alone. He will always be missed.

I feel you on that. the foo fighters are my favorite band and i listen to them often. i have ptsd and anxiety and when i get upset, i listen to my "get happy songs" and its some foo fighters songs. I don't know when i'll be able to listen to them again without crying

It sucks concert tickets are so expensive sometimes but great musicians dying left and right is why I just credit card shows and go whenever possible because fuck it you gotta enjoy the music live while you can. "I don't know how I got this way, I'll never be alright" broke me as the most despairing lyric ever. BEFORE. Now... RIP, Chester.

Breaking the Habit was about drug addiction, hence the lyrics: Clutching my cure, I tightly lock the door, I try to catch my breath again.

I remember being a teenager when Linkin Park first "got big" and the words were powerful, you could feel the emotion in Chester's every word... looking back now after he's gone, and knowing the then untold story about why he wrote the lyrics he did, it's VERY telling how he was able to not only write such powerful songs, but how he was able to sing with so much intensity and emotion for so long. I only wish he was able to beat the demons like he absolutely helped others throughout his life, and after. RIP Chester... We miss you!

The backstage warmup of Rolling in the Deep is better than the concert version to me.

For me, Chester has THE best voice I’ve ever heard. There’s so much pain in his voice but also the range he can get to from high notes to 17 second screams….. he was just such a talented human and it always makes me feel really sad seeing his live performances

This is my first time listening to Chester since he died and I’m surprised how much it guts me. As old and disconnected from the music of my high school days as I might feel, performances like this remind me just how much of my past self is still alive in me.

Watching this has me crying dude. I had my dad buy me Hybrid Theory as a kid and that's all we would listen to going to hockey games or practice. Then Meteora came out..same thing. The loss of Chester has hit a whole bunch of us, from me being in my 30s to everyone older and younger. You appreciating his vocals makes me so happy. I still can't believe it's been so long :(

Eh that's not entirely true, Mike had wrote the song trying to express some emotions he had for the last 5 or 6 years. He then showed the lyrics to Chester and that's when he began to tear up, because of how relatable it was to him

I've been listening to Linkin Park since I was like 10 years old, I'm 31 years old now. Listening to Linkin Park got me through a lot of tough times in my life and when Chester took his own life it ate me up inside , my son was just born and then a few days later , the world lost Chester Bennington. I haven't had the heart to listen to his last 2 albums, even now. There's still songs with his talented voice that I still have a chance to listen to for the first time and that's something special. Someday I'll have the courage to finish listening to the rest of the discography .

@Scott Meehan that is very true, and I think him pulling his earpiece out for particularly intense scream might indicate that those screams plug his ears. And when that happens you hear yourself much louder than normal, so screaming in a way that plugs your ears will hurt no matter what, but taking out that earpiece won't make you go fully death.

I was supposed to see him in concert right before his passing❤❤ he is one of my favorite singers that touch my soul.

Chester's strength was never in singing low and slow. His screams, his emotion, his power, his ability to "sing multiple notes at once", and his amazing lung capacity, is what made him truly iconic for a decade of music. Especially his drawn out notes are really something. About the "space invader" sound in the song, the band - especially Mike - has a thing for retro games. They even made their own 8-bit game at one point. I think this fascination might also be somewhat related to Mike's Japanese heritage. Furthermore, Mike himself made a lot of the illustrations for the music video for this particular song, where once again I feel like the Japanese inspiration shines through.

@@NodaBear Thank you, didn't know the studio they collaborated with. I know that I've heard Mike did some of the art. I don't know too which degree, and I of course can't say for sure that it's true, but I don't think anybody would be surprised that he took an active part in the collaboration.

"Given Up" is one of the best models of Chester's vocal skills in Linkin Park. Plus a 18 second scream in the bridge

I appreciate your videos I just discovered you. I'm obviously not a vocal expert I just know what "sounds good" to me but your perspective is allowing me to appreciate the talent and hard work some of my favorite artist have for producing the songs I love. Chesters' best skill as a vocalist for Linkin Park was as you mentioned a sort of "innocent" or say gentle singing voice as well as the ability to switch like on a dime to a hyper aggressive metal growl - AND IT STILL SOUNDED GREAT! God when Chester goes to the growl it get me hyped. Thank you.

Came for Linkin Park. Ended up staying because you're so enthusiastic and knowledgeable and explained things so clearly.

It is amazing watching someone fall in love with this band. I have loved Linkin Park for too many years to count, and it is lovely to see someone falling for the authenticity and passion of Chester, Mike, and the rest of the band. Your LP videos have been some of my favorite to watch. Thank you for being open to so many genres of music, and teaching us about voice mechanics.

First song of theirs I ever heard was Crawling, which to this day is a personal favorite. You can feel every little detail of the pain and sadness. You can feel that Chester not only had talent, but also had personal connections to the feelings he was relating to. It is a song I have heard so many times that I know like an old friend, and just like an old friend I welcome it's arrival each time with both joy and sadness.

The first LP song I heard was One Step Closer in a music shop in a shopping mall, I was 6.5 years old and I instantly loved it, so I begged my mother, who was there to look for Guns N Roses vinyl's to ask the clerk what song it was and who made it. That day I became the proud owner of a copy of Hybrid Theory and to this day still my nr. 1 album, I love it to death. So you can imagine my joy, when LP released Meteora just 3 months after I had gotten Hybrid Theory. I am the definition of that meme with Snape and Dumbledore: "After all this time?" "Always." They will always hold a special place in my heart. As many other people, their music helped me get through both dark and bright times. When I was teased in school and was depressed and suicidal, when I got my first girlfriend, when I broke up with her, when I drove car for the first time, when I landed my first job, when my dog died. They are simply the best of the 21st century, and I have a hard time seeing anyone ever again get soo successful with that kind of music.

What I find mesmerizing about Chesters singing is that he sings from two perspectives at once. all the time. You can hear him sing with pain and perseverance simultaneously, you can hear him sing with exhaustion and optimism at once. There's always two perspectives whether he's singing or screaming. A legend. Once in a lifetime.

Chester Bennington has incredibly powerful emotions, not necessarily always good. And music really brings this out easily in him. It makes him one of the greatest musicians of my generation. He matches his body language (including the shift in his voice) to what he’s feeling at that “current” moment in time. He’s a natural entertainer because he’s raw, he’s unfiltered. He’s just expressing his current feelings through his music, which is also generating those feelings in him.

To this day I tear up listening to LP. Its difficult to watch live performances of Chester. They helped me through some very difficult times and now as an older, man with a family, I still battle with these feelings. Just not as difficult when I can turn and look at my children. But if a Linkin Park song comes on, particularly this one, I have to leave the room or close the door. He meant so much to a lot of people. Me as especially. I was so drawn towards them before because it was very relatable. I understand more and more now. RIP Chester.

Please watch Chester and Chris Cornell sing together. They did Hunger Strike and Crawling so beautifully. I know you'll enjoy both.

Thank you Liz for helping put context to these emotions the music evokes. I listen to this breakdown as much as the music itself when I am hurting, like tonight. This is old and I doubt you see this response in the sea but thank you. You're helping the world, I promise. 😢

Ok this band has so much to give you but if breath control is this important I suggest any version of their song "Crawling" the second release of their career and arguably the song that cemented their success!

This right here is the best one to check out. Tbh I'm a bti sad that this song got to be the first reaction. This just about average on Chesters part and there would have been like 20 better songs to choose from.

Amen to that!

The beginning is a stripped verson of the song, and transitions into the studio version. It give me goosebumps when Mrs. Zharoff said thew way Chester sings the beginning is like a friend talking to you, because the song was written by Mike to Chester as a plea to Chester that he need to break his habit of drugs and alcohol that lead to him being volatile. The first few times Chester tried to preform the song he couldn't even get through it because it was so emotional to him. There was one really old clip somewhere where he chokes up. A life changing song for Chester.
