Evanescence "Bring Me to Life" REACTION & ANALYSIS by Vocal Coach/Opera Singer

WOW! We had good taste in the good ol' days. It's time to revisit a song that I heard waaaaay back when, but didn't really know how GOOD it was.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she analyzes Evanescence for the first time, performing "Bring Me to Life."

The "creepy clown faces" is actually my favorite visual piece of the video, the girl has a smiling clown mask, and then she lifts it and you can see she's crying. In those two split seconds, so much is said, about how people wear happy masks to hide the pain from others, to the point where it's so unnatural it's almost clownish. It's too bad it often goes unnoticed, it's such a powerful metaphor.

Fallen the 1st Evenesvence album came out in 2002 Bring Me to Life and My Immortal were both on the soundtrack . Both have videos. Did not hate the movie at the time and still am a fan of Evanescence to this day.

Yes Elizabeth is very expressive with her eyes, smile, hands, etc. Perhaps being not just a singer, but also a performer as an Opera singer is part of the reason. Then again I bet Elizabeth has always been an open book of expression and being an opera singer suited her very well! Fortunately she shares both her artistic side, but also her technical training/knowledge. Thankfully Elizabeth shares herself wonderfully in her reaction videos. ;-)

People tend to dismiss bands like Evanescence since they sound very early 2000s and angsty (and have been memed to death) but the music is still good imo. Amy Lee has been my favorite female vocalist since I was little, her voice is truly incredible and haunting. Super nostalgic band, their music still evokes a lot of emotion in me as an adult.

I saw them live after the release of Fallen. While very enjoyable, and a good show, at the time at least, her voice didn't hold up to what I expected from hearing her studio work. But indeed, she was still quite young at the time, and relatively unexperienced, especially with regards to performing for a very large public. Fallen changed their world, and changed rock music. It is an amazing production, which was for a very large part done by the band itself. They went from 'yet another unknown rock band' to playing at huge venues and festivals in essentially no time at all. I do recall her complaining about too little rest, too many shows, and having trouble with her voice as a result at the time, so maybe my impression was based on unlucky timing, tho it does match existing live recordings from that time.

Being 27 and growing up to this song as a kid, I always loved it, but obviously there were a lot of elements of the song I didn't fully understand, until now. And yes, the production in the video is insanely good. This song was so many years before it's time, and in a lot of ways signals the music of the future combining elements of metal, hip hop, and Amy's operatic/emo style voicing. The lyrics are phenomenal and the song evokes everything it is set out to.

lol, this was 2002, metal and hip hop had been mixing for more than 10 years, lol. Its even 3-4 years after the first Linkin Park album, which brought the synth into it. She was the first in the mainstream to have this operatic sound, but this was several years after the first Nightwish album as well, IIRC, and Lacuna Coil had definitely been out for a little while as well (enough so that the record company allegedly pushed to have the male vocals on the track, since that was already an established element of the goth sound). Not to say its not great, but it was definitely not the first. Of course, most of that stuff would have been before you were paying attention to music, so that is understandable (not trying to be condescending, just noticed you would have been around 7 when this came out)

Why aren't they reacting to the Synthesis Live DVD performances??? Never Go Back and End of the Dream (Not exclusively, but especially from the DVD) are fantastic examples of her vocals and I want to hear what they have to say about her technique and vocal abilities on THAT as opposed to the perfected studio recording. That being said, this reaction video was extremely enjoyable.. I just wish the live vocals would get more love in these sort of videos! :)

This episode brings to mind a meeting that happened in the mid to late 90's in South Florida. I lived in a town called "Hobe Sound in southeast Florida. I had a friend that had a home studio. He was very popular with local bands in making very good quality demo tapes. He had worked at a big time studio, which is where he got his skills but the pressure was too much. So he built his own studio and made his living making demos. I was at his house one day working on a guitar tone that he was helping me with. There was a knock at the door and it was Amy, with this guy that had like a cheap Casio keyboard with a bunch of preloaded rap beats on it and he wanted to have a demo recorded. They set up and my friend started to record. He was a wanna be rapper and she was the back up singer. My friend stopped recording and asked him to wait outside. At this point, she had only sang maybe 2 verses and she blew our minds!!!!! My friend immediately told her to lose rapper boy, and he would make her a demo. My friend told us to leave and we left. He later told us he made her an awesome demo and she would probably have a record deal real soon. I always liked Evanescence, but never put 2 and 2 together, until I read her Wikipedia and some of her history in South Florida. I knew from the first sounds I heard from her that she was gonna be a BIG star!!!!

I can't imagine it with only Amy singing all of that because there are overlapping vocal parts and the exchange between them seems important to the vibe of the song. I have not heard the version without the male vocal parts, but I'm not sure I want to. It would only be for the purpose of hearing it the way Amy wanted it. I'm sure it's great in its own rite. 7:50 that's something I love about evanescence that's really progressed and changed, yet been very unique about their music and Amy lees actual recording style, is that she's very good at harmonies, and her own kind of backing vocals that are almost their own entire song. It adds such a nice element to her songs in my opinion. She's also very good at ambiance in her vocals, with drawn out nearly whispered vocals ending songs, sometimes even using literally just an exhale as a lyric, like in the song "yeah right" off of their album "the bitter truth" as well as a few covers of songs she's done solo. Not to mention her ability to make simple "oohs" and "ahhs" sound completely other worldly, there's some songs I couldn't imagine without them because they have such an angelic haunting quality. There's even a live performance of "even in death" I believe, where she has a special intro she played at the show that really showcases that ability

Never one to comment on many KZread videos but seeing you breakdown songs for their lyrics has given me such appreciation for singers and the nuances that is involved with it. A musician myself and have a few recorded songs from my earlier days, but never really saw how in depth vocals can be into the song writing process. Appreciate your breakdowns and knowledge from that perspective

Have you checked out already the german band Beyond the Black? the style is quite similar, also a very talented female singer who was just about 17 years old whenn recording the debut album "Songs of Love & Death" in 2014/2015. Especially recommended: In the Shadows (opener), When angels fall, Pearl in a world of dirt ( very beautiful ballad, which she played all by herself on the piano on the Wacken stage! ), and Hallelujah, all on this debut album. Greetings from germany and be blessed for the passion you show in your videos!

Evanescence is on my bucket list of bands to see. I love Amy Lee's voice. I never knew this was a love song, but thinking about the lyrics, it makes total sense. People are saying "My Immortal" is their favorite and I can totally see why, but I've particularly been drawn to "Everybody's Fool". There's just something about it.

They are incredible live. The energy is great because they go through all their eras and from current to mainstream. Great light show, costume changes and supporting acts too. Lee also supports lots of female acts, as well, so it’s very emotive to experience and cool, if you were too young to see them when you were 13 (like me).
