    I saw this as a kid in the theater and it is one of my all time favorite films. I still have the metal trash can and action figures my mom got for me, too. The first PG rated Disney film and one of the most grim stories they produced.

    You did a great job on these. Above and beyond. I built and painted all of the Black Hole kits when I was a kid. I haven't seen this movie in probably 30 years, but when you played the sound clip, I realized the robots are Roddy Mcdowell and Slim Pickens.

    This is awesome! You did a way better job on your Vincent but thank you for the compliment on my video of my build of him. I actually have a bluray of the movie. I found it on ebay. I guess they're quite rare as it was some kind of limited release. You can probably get a copy if you keep looking on ebay. It looks fantastic and clean. They also erased the visible wires that suspended the robots in certain scenes. I hope you can get a copy. This is one of my favorite builds of yours. I absolutely love that movie too!

    You did a very nice job with your model. It's old and difficult to work with. I have plans later this year for a Cygnus build. There are some awesome 3D printed parts out there to build a perfectly accurate 40 inch model, lighting and all. It will be a challenge but if I can pull it off properly, well worth the effort.

    I watched that movie again recently on Disney+. I think the story line was lacking, but the effects were pretty good for the time. I wouldn’t call it a favorite, but worth watching. The Maximilian robot was definitely a menacing character. Your treatment of the models is superb, as usual.

    The "hell sequence" at the end of that film was one of the scarier things Disney put to film back then. There was a period in the late 1970s through the mid-1980s when they made some experimental films -- The Black Hole, TRON, Return to OZ. None of these films were huge successes but they were different and at least in the latter two cases not formula films. Disney would just screw them up now. They've lost the ability to make compelling, original films that don't feel forced or regurgitated. The Black Hole was an obvious attempt to cash in on Star Wars like everybody else did for at least 4-5 years after the original Star Wars was released. It kind of deserves to be treated better but Disney won't have it. Even the recent Blu ray release was initially botched. They did ZERO restoration work on it and it shows.

    Disney DID release The Black Hole on Blu-ray in 2019. Unfortunately, it was through Disney Movie Club (DMC) and didn't see as big of a distribution as it deserves. Since the film "underperformed" for the penny pinchers, Disney has always treated it poorly, and cheaply. It still needs a proper restoration instead of just scanning "as is", but I highly doubt they will ever pony up the bucks to do it. You can still find the Blu-ray on eBay and such. Be sure you don't get one from the first batch. They didn't encode it properly and the disc skips over the Overture at the beginning.

    @@TrekWorks I never built the robots but I built the Cygnus when it first hit the shelves- I think I paid US$2.50 for it at the time. Definitely lacking detail, no transparent parts so lighting it would mean carving out most of the kit and replacing with clear sheet with drawn-on girders etc. I think there's a Pepakura paper model of it available online if someone wanted a scratchbuild starting point. My ancient eyes won't let me even try these days. (sigh)

    Hi Boyd hope all is well with you. I loved this movie as a child, did a model of the USS Cygnus back in 1981 found the movie a few years back on VHS brings back memories. I have a quick question...How many SMD's can you put on a 470 resistor? any help would be much appreciated thanks.

  • @TrekWorks

    @TrekWorks

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sorry but I don't know the answer to that. I use pre wired SMD's that have a resistor on each one. To know exactly, you'd have to look up the specs on the SMD's for voltage and amp draw and then use the formula multiplied by the number of SMD's to know which resistor to use. I expect that more than one or 2 SMD's would need a higher resistance than 470.

    Boyd, The Black Hole IS out on Blu ray but two problems... 1) It's a Disney Movie Club exclusive and the less scrupulous vendors on places like Amazon or e-Bay will try to sell it for $50 or more. The MSRP is $20 but Club Members can get it for less than that. [I intend on buying it but haven't put down the coin for it yet.] The movie isn't out of print. The usual scalpers online are trying to get more money out of people who don't know better. That's what happens with a lot of the Disney Movie Club exclusives and Disney does NOTHING to stop this. They sell movies they don't think they can sell at Best Buy or Wal Mart online to save on shipping costs... but they also cheap out on other things like I'll explain further. [Best Buy, btw, is quickly eliminating its movie section at many stores. They have hardly ANY movie section at my local store anymore. I have to go to another store in another part of my town to find any decent selection. BB in general is going down the drain... Matter of time in my opinion before they join Circuit City and Fry's Electronics in defunct businessland. There'll still be some electronics stores but next to nobody selling movies instores. The home media market has been shrinking incredibly fast the last 5 years because of streaming.] 2) Disney did absolutely no restoration work on The Black Hole Blu ray. It still looks and sounds better than the DVD but it needs some TLC Disney wouldn't spend the money for. 3) There are no extras. Just the menu and the movie and that's it. A year or two before this Blu ray release, Disney did a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Blu ray. That release was based on a 4K remaster so it looks fantastic BUT as usual for Disney for back-catalog releases on Blu ray, they put no extras on the home video release on Blu ray. If you want backstory and extras to put 20K in perspective for Disney and motion picture history, you have to get the previous DVD release of 20,000 Leagues. It's a crying shame but that's Disney for you under the Bob Iger regime. They only see $-signs and have no respect for their past. They've earned a reputation for being cheap on home video releases that aren't current Marvel or Pixar movies.

    I found the Blu ray on evilbay for a decent price so I ordered it. I'll be happy if the picture is better than the horrible print they used for the first DVD release. It's super grainy and even out of focus in a few spots. I have the 20K Blu ray and it looks great. Glad I got that one.

  • @AvengerII

    @AvengerII

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@TrekWorks 20K got a restoration in 4K and the Blu ray release was made off that. Disney had plans to do remakes of both 20k and The Black Hole but they never happened. There is damage to The Black Hole master but Disney won't put money into fixing that film without a remake to "justify it." The film is a cult classic and would probably not sell that many copies. I don't necessarily agree with that attitude but Disney has done a lot of infuriating things on home video since Blu ray arrived. They've cheaped out on a lot of back-catalog releases on Blu ray and never ported the extras from many past DVD releases to the Blu ray editions! The DVD releases of so many Disney films were BETTER presentations than the Blu rays and packed with extras never ported to the later Blu ray editions. Only the newer films and certain classic get the classic treatment. For instance, the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea DVD has a lot of great extras and making of documentaries that were not ported over to the Blu ray. Did you know, for instance, that 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was directed by the son of Walt Disney's chief competitor in the 1930s? 20k's director, Richard Fleischer, was the son of Max Fleischer, producer of both Betty Boop and the original Popeye cartoons as well as the original animated Superman shorts made in the early 1940s. None of the interviews or possible audio commentary (don't remember this; I haven't watched the DVD in over a decade!) with Richard Fleischer are on the 20k Blu ray because current Disney management doesn't think it's important. They believe most of the film's fans will forgive the "oversight" (re: cost-cutting measure and cheapness of current Disney). I remember when Disney was a classy company and the extra cost of much of their product was justified. Now, they're as cheap and chintzy as the other Hollywood studios and they still expect you to pay full price for all their product even when it doesn't have the "frosting and toppings" it had in the past! And they wonder WHY I won't pay for the privilege of Disney+?
