Vintage Mego: The 12" Black Hole Line

Ойын-сауық

Vintage Mego this week goes in, through, and beyond Mego's relationship with Disney's 1979 Science Fiction blockbuster, The Black Hole!
This episode explicitly discusses the 12" Mego line of action figures based on the Black Hole characters, considered one of Mego's biggest failures. Why did it fail? We give you a breakdown while discussing its origins, how Mego got out of paying a million-dollar royalty bill and how Ernest Borgnine brought about wedded bliss for one Mego employee.
One Minor Update: Pedigree Toys did indeed print their own boxes. My bad.

Wow!!! I always been hoping these figures would be discussed!!! I truly loved the movie and as soon these figures were on the shelves, i quickly bought them at the time...why not? They were 5.88 each, so bought 2 every saturday until i completed the set. And then again bought the set as an adult in 1999. Since Maximillian was never made, i bought the model which was awesome they did him. And just a few years ago i got from Ireland the rare boxed wind-up VINcent which now makes my set more than complete! Thanks for this Oh-So- Awesome review!👍👍👍👍👍

I was a teenager when I came across these at a Family Bargain Center store in Southern California. They actually had full sets in good condition so I picked all six, *heavily* discounted. I really enjoyed them, quite possibly the highest quality 12" figures Mego had ever released. This was about '80-'81, and Dan had ALREADY developed facial discoloration...

As I was starting high school, my mom gave me a choice: "toys or comics, one has to go", and I chose to keep the comics. About 6 years ago, the nostalgia bug bit and I started to reconnect with my childhood stuff. That's when the regret set in: I had *all* the 3.75 Black Hole robots, minus Humanoid, as a kid. Most were purchased on clearance. I've only managed to re-collect VINCent and a Sentry. Sigh...the next thing tumbling into that black hole is gonna be my wallet... ;)

Was very fond of these 12" figures - I live in the UK and I remember this wonderful window display in the local toyshop where they mixed these with the Action Man Space Ranger line - the figures were hung on wires as if floating in space. We had Holland and Pizer (as 10 and 11 year olds, it was all about the heroic leads!) and later got Durant between us with some Xmas money. I believe the Star Trek: The Motion Picture 12" figures came out around the same time - I wonder why the 12" figures for both movies were so similar, when the 3.75 figures were so different? (The Black Hole ones had far more articulation). Thanks so much for these wonderful bits of nostalgia!

I only knew a friend as a kid that had the 3.75 Vincent and Bob. Never knew this stuff existed. I had a similar experience as you did when I came across the big TMP figures on clearance in 80’ or so. Got a Spock with my allowance. Became one of my favorites. Wish I had a chance at these too. Always needed big figures when visiting my cousins. They were girls that had Barbie. Spock, Luke, and Boba Fett formed a special team for me. These would have been welcome additions.

We got the film in England at the Odeon Leicester Square, in 1979,playing across the the square was Star Trek the motion picture, so I saw both, over a Saturday afternoon and evening,Fantastic day,my parents couldn't afford to buy action figures for us and as a child I did without such things, which in effect turned me into a toy collector ,when I started earning good money from construction work,,I started collecting toys, especially Action figures and purchased the Black Hole figures at one of the London toy fairs,in the late eighties,so yes they are on display along with many many figures and toys and books, and yes like yourself we enjoy this wonderful collecting because of memories .strange thing really, but absolutely enjoyable. Cheers for posting.

I've always had a soft spot for The Black hole and could never understand why it wasn't more popular. The action figures, especially the 12 inch line are very detailed. It didn't take very long for me to find them all on Ebay, and they weren't expensive. I still have the traveling bag I got for Christmas in 1979, and have taken it on many vacations. It has the Palomino pictured on it. Yes, I also have the Mego Trons and didn't know about the copyright situation with the name. It's nice to see Disney on the receiving end for once!

Amazing!!! Great to hear about this 12" line of Mego figures, as I never actually came across them myself as a kid at the beginning of the 80's, so it was very interesting to hear their backstory. My own experience with this movie comes from the 3 3/4 line of figures, and I still have my Maximillian figure to this day I'm pleased to say. A couple of questions: 1) what is the video that starts at 6:13 please, and is it available seperately on here to view? I'm just curious about all the different figures I saw on view, as it looks like some sort of company showreel, and 2) Being a big fan of The Black Hole film myself, I have to ask what did you think of the very surreal Heaven / Hell ending when they entered the Black Hole? Finally, I loved your school lunchbox, very collectable and neat! Nice video, very interesting subject, thanks!

It wasn't only the absence of the guns in the 12" line that made no sense. The 3.75 inch Sentry and STAR both came with silver pistols that they could never ever hope to hold with those Micronaut hands of theirs. The pistols kind of fit in the holster molded on the sides of their legs but it felt like it was included from another figure line. I would have killed to have a 1/6 scale Maximillian figure as well as a Sentry, STAR and BOB. I have Charlie Pizer but he looks like he's in some Kabuki play as his face is scary white/grey and the plastic seems to be slowly melting.

I don't recall ever seeing the 12" figures. I did ask for the Sentry, Max and Vincent from the 3.75" line. You do know that Yvette Mimieux, the actress who played Dr. Kate McCrae, passed away last month? RIP. I liked the movie better as a kid. I was less critical and it came around the same time as Star Trek : The Motion Picture which I had a harder time sitting through. Neither is a great movie but Star Trek: TMP has aged better, IMHO. The Black Hole has a nice theme and in general the effects are decent with some minor exceptions where it shows that Disney's effects department was not up to par with ILM by that point. The last time I saw the movie was around 10-12 years ago. It might have been on the Hallmark Channel which had licensed some old Disney films they weren't showing anywhere else! Disney seems to bury its failures and this film is definitely considered a failure. They didn't even release the Blu ray edition in stores. The Black Hole is a Disney Movie Club exclusive along with many back-catalog titles. Heck, there are anniversary editions of films like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (85th anniversary coming up!) which will NOT be released in stores because of declining home media sales. The Black Hole BD itself has had no remastering or restoration work that you can see and was initially screwed up and had to be recalled! The John Barry (yes, THAT John Barry -- the guy who scored and conducted many James Bond films) score has rarely been released in album format. I think the last album release, the CD edition, was very limited and is out of print.

The average age of the cast is 50, and the ending will show a literal DESCENT INTO HELL for the villain!”_ _“Uh... this is for kids... how?”_ _“There’s a small robot with big eyes.”_ _“SOLD!”_ I had a 3 3/4 Vincent as a kid. Nothing else. A Reinheart appeared in my collection many years later as part of a batch of old toys. No appeal to me in the human characters as a kid.

You weren't alone in the "not interested in the human characters" thing. And yeah, Disney liked scaring kids, we were better for it.

Love the movie and had several of the smaller figures and that story record, but have no memory of the taller figures. No idea they existed until this video.

Wow, all the Ernest Borgnine hate on this channel. You know, he is with Alec Guinness and Marlon Brando in a pretty small Venn Diagram. Actors who won Academy Award for Best Actor and had a Sci Fi movie action figure made of them. There may be others but those three pop to mind.

They’re just plain boring aren’t they? Black Hole figures were always in the bargain buckets in the early Eighties UK. It’s amusing that Disney were so squeamish about guns then given that you can go on Disney+ and find Walking Dead and American Horror Story next to Snow White.

I think that the addition of the pistols would make them bad ass. I think I'll get some 3D printed.
