I feel exactly the same way!

This has become my new favorite gun and hunting channel. I have never given much thought to these old Remington's but will have to start considering them. I've always searched for a 52 sporter, but they aren't readily available in my part of the world. And when they do come up they've been up there with new Anschütz 54 sporters. I suspect these will be a bit more reasonable.

New subscriber here from Williamson County, TN. I am enjoying all of your content on shooting 22's - that is my preferred type to take to the range. Your link to the date code on the Remington rifles was a great help. I have a Remington 572 that my Dad bought for me when I was around 12-13 years old. I know about when we got it but was not completely sure. The date code shows a barrel date of February 1969 which means that I may have gotten it for my 12th birthday in June of that year. It is basically in like-new condition and is my treasure. I am looking forward to watching more of your videos !! Thanks again !!.

I was pleased with it as well.

My first rifle was a brand new Remington 580 made in 1973. My dad bought it for my 13th birthday. It has a mahogany stock. Years later I bought a first year production 581 with the walnut stock. I almost prefer the 580 as it is so much lighter for carrying. They are both super accurate. The mahogany is a softer wood so it does ding and dent easier. I won’t refinish the stock on the 580 because I put those dings there growing up. Nice video 🤠

That was the first brand new 22 I bought back in the early 80s, Very accurate. I passed it down to my daughter, so it's still in the family

My uncles bought me mine as my first gun just before my 12th birthday in 1971. Still shoots dead accurate just like yours. It’s as accurate as my Anschütz.

Got a 581 that my brother bought new in 68. Stock was getting a bit beat up so I stripped the brown paint that Remington called walnut stain and found that red wood with beautiful grain.

There are six locking lnugs on the bolt to push the cartridge tight into the chamber. It’s the greatest squirrel gun I know of. Mainly because of its light weight and its extreme accuracy.

As far as I know, it is the strongest lockup of any rimfire rifle. Looks like you have discovered the Remington 580 series atributes as well.

Nice little rifle, should make a fine squirrel gun. Nice video. Back then Remington made some fine rifles.

You are amongst the few that have discovered the fine attributes of these rifles.

I can't understand why Remington would go to the trouble of building these fantastic .22's only to equip them with a plastic magazine. Every time I insert the mag into my 541s in makes me cringe! Have you ever done a video on stock refinishing? You have it down to an art form. Thanks for another great video. Howard is a fortunate fellow.

Remington used plastics because it was owned by Dupont and they were big on plastics. Nylon 66, 660 had plastic trigger guard, 541 with plastic mag etc. I had a 541S, great shooter, still have my 660 in .222 Rem.

Nice review on that .22 Tom. It's a good shooter too. I love the old Remingtons, but don't trust the new ones.

Nice video, I have two Marlin model 80 rifles very simular to your remington bolt action guns. On My newer model 80 I installed a bi pod and scope. I also have a remington nylon 76 lever action that I bought in 1966 it is a good shooter and lightweight .

They will interchange, but the 788 bolt stop needs to be modified because it won't go down far enough for the 580 series bolt to operate correctly. No need to do this though because there are entire trigger groups available on Ebay quite regularly.

There are many sources, but I often go to ebay for parts.

Another most enjoyable .22 video. A very desirable rifle, then lovingly enhanced! Great shooting! Bushytails beware. Too bad it doesn't like shorts (but the twist rate is optimized for the long rifle. Pax

I was rather disheartened when I shot the shorts through it. I was wondering if I just had a bad batch of rounds, but I shot a few groups from one of my rifles and it did rather well.

Really enjoy the videos on .22 rifles. I recently stumbled across a Remington Firearms 552 BDL Deluxe Speedmaster. Any thoughts on this rifle? I”m thinking about purchasing but wanted your opinion on whether it’s worth it. - Thanks and please keep up these videos.

Thanks for the compliment. I own a Rem. 552 standard model, and it does shoot very reliably. The accuracy is not the best in my rifle, but good enough for hunting small game. One nice feature is that it will shoot and cycle .22 short, long and long rifle ammo interchangeably.

What do you typically recommend to lighten up the trigger pull on a 581/591?

Whats ur thoughts on getting a 513T or mossberg 144LSB...which would you pick. 569 for 513. 449 for 144

I always look forward to your new videos each week. I too am a Marlin and 22 rifle enthusiasts and especially like your stock refinishing. On my Marlin 60 since we especially like shooting CCI Quiet 710 feet per second ammo here in our backyard have you ever considered trying to modify a Model 60 to shoot the Quiet ammo reliably in full semi-auto operation? I have a couple sixties and my thoughts are with one of them I would have to lighten the breech block lighten springs and really hone finish everything in the action. What are your thoughts and recommendations ? Thank you. Looking forward to your opinion.

Thanks for continued support. You bring up some interesting ideas. Some of which I have pondered over in the past. I don't think you would need to lighten the bolt so much as the main spring itself. I have always wondered about getting the model 60 to shoot shorts like my Rem. 552 Speedmaster. It would be a simple task. Just take a few coils off at a time until it starts to shoot and cycle. I think the tension on the hammer spring would be an issue, but with everything honed smooth as you suggest, it may just work. No doubt it's an interesting subject.

Well, both of my plastic magazines, the 10 shot and the later five shot are still working after over 50 years so it makes the gun lighter.

Rifle stock came out great. Are you sure about those 581's Ha ha. Great video.

I am looking for a front sight on this thing. I broke mine off as a kid, and I’ve missed it ever since.

CCI sshp’s are what we use for squirrel to. A friend of mind killed a 200lb sow with it too

I have used them extensively for many years now.

I have a Remington model 597. It's got a little markings for you showing in this video on the side of the gun belt. It's l looks like g and right out from that. Looks like two half of moons upside down. I have no idea what that means like I said it has an ale the letter. L and the letter g

What is your advise to lighten a 580 series trigger? I think if I can get a better trigger, my 582 will keep up with or possibly beat my CZ's.

On a personal level, I have drilled and tapped a tiny hole in the rear of the trigger housing and installed an adjustable tiny screw made of high carbon steel. This will adjust the sear engagement, and I can get a light crisp trigger pull. You really need to know what you are doing though. I have also heard of cutting a coil or two off the trigger return spring to lighten it up a bit. Any modifications are at the discretion of the gun owner, and by no means recommended by me since I have no way of knowing your gunsmithing skills.

grate rife i new a vineyard owen ho had one from 1970s he 1000s of j ack rabbits digging squrals and deer under dep permit one shot holes at 50 yards with cci green tag once or twice a year he had to clean lead out would miss an easy shot he new time delead

Nice shooting. Have you tried Hornady Standard Velocity ammo? It shoots well in all my .22's.

I do not yet have the model 582. For some reason it has eluded me. I'd really like to get one with a mahogany stock.

So the question becomes. What kind of scope are you going to put on this animal? I have seen people with iron sights. They can beat anybody with a scope.

The rifle belongs to a friend of mine, and he wanted the scope I installed on it. The Vortex Crossfire 2 turned out to be quite suitable. When I was much younger, I could shoot open sights very well, but even with young eyes, I realized that a good scope was far superior. The facts speak for themselves in that there is one focal plane, a magnified perfectly focused view of the target, and a much finer point of aim with a scope over iron sights. I have shot 1/4 inch groups with my .222 Rem. at 100 yards, and 1/4-3/8ths inch groups at 50 yards with my Rem. 581 . No human has ever been able to aim that finely, much less be able to see a 1/4 inch target at that distance with their bare eyes. So (not to be argumentative), but to say someone shooting iron sights can beat anybody with a scope is pretty far fetched. That being said, and to see your point of view, there are some real crack shots that can shoot an open sighted rifle quite well. Even the best peep sights can't compare to a relatively inexpensive scope. I have shot with both, and I have the actual groups to prove it.

The thing is with iron sights, you have to have eyesight that allows you to focus in the rear and the front site perfectly. The target can be blurry that’s fine. I was at a turkey shoot once with my uncles, everybody had a scoped centerfire rifle. Some backwoods guy dragged out by his relatives, half toothless pulled out a Winchester 94, 30-30 and was nailing them at 100 yards, won the turkey shoot. with open sights, beat everybody with a scope. Tom it’s possible, it’s very rare but it’s possible. The same thing applies to shooting iron sights on a handgun. You need the sites themselves in perfect focus. I never knew there was somebody else out there that appreciated this little gun. Thanks for putting it out there man.

Tom, I am a optometrist, I could give you a pair of glasses that would allow you to focus in your front and rear sights on that sweet little gun. It would be very interesting to see what you can do with that.

All I need is your eyeglass prescription, you take half of the power in the bottom and the added to the top and then your sights are in perfect focus. just give me your eyeglass prescription and I’ll send you one that will work perfectly for shooting your iron sights. your computer screen, the same pair of glasses. There’s nothing magic about it.

It’s drop dead simple. You add 1.25 diopters of plus to the top prescription. Then your front sight and you rear sight are in focus. You can line stuff up in the background, your target, it doesn’t have to be clear. You have plenty of clues where to connect.
