Fast Stepping .22 Rimfires

In this video I test some new hyper-velocity .22 LR rimfire loads, and compare them to some older super high speed loadings. The results are quite interesting, so come along and lets shoot some fast stepping .22's.

I usually like watching YT videos when they're less than15 minutes long. Your videos are the exception. So much interesting info on my favorite22lr topic. Thank you for all you do.

Another very good and informative comparison. Love your .22 videos, my favorite all time round. Looks like that day in and day out the Stinger is still all around hard to beat. Back in the day, I believe Remington had a solid hyper velocity round that was very similar to the Yellow Jacket, and that was the Viper. I believe I still have a few of those around here somewhere. Tom, you have found a great way to recycle one gallon water jugs!!!

Very informative video. These hyper rounds seem designed for hunting. I purely target shoot both 22 lr pistols and rifles. My favorite ammo for general purpose target shooting is CCI Standard Target … it’s a 40 grain lead round nose traveling at 1040 FPS. I get great results with this and it’s reasonably priced. If I were ever to enter a competition I’d try some more expensive rounds to see if my groups get tighter…

Great video Tom, I really enjoyed it. I don't know about you, but I've found that some of the most accurate .22lr ammo I've used have been Standard velocity. .22lr Standard velocity and .22 shorts is pretty much all I use for rabbit & squirrel hunting. JT

I agree, standard velocity is really all that's necessary for small game. The hyper velocity stuff is way too hot in my opinion. It is better suited to larger varmints, like the ones I mentioned in the video.

@@CumberlandOutdoorsman When I lived in Sheridan County, Wyoming and was hunting private ranches around outbuildings and livestock, I would use .22shorts to lessen the chance of a ricochet, and they worked great on cottontails. I'd also use .22 shorts if I was hunting squirrel in small stands of woods where I didn't want a bullet to carry to far.

I remember those from back in the 1980's. In fact I still have a few. I was very impressed by their performance. They had a good looking hollowpointed copper plated bullet in a standard length case. Lots of power packed into those rounds. I wish Winchester would bring them back as well as Expediters, and their HV hollowpoint .22 short loading.

Another winner, Sir! Love your .22 Series! Greatly admire your classy launch platforms as well. I agree with your commentors generally. I have no practical (field) experience with the hyper rounds as their collective accuracy has never competed with our "conventional" rounds and I get sufficient "splat factor" for my purposes with 36-40 gr. HPs. I like Short HPs for early season, while my dedicated squirrel sniper is a .22 WMR with non-expanding projectiles. My go-to .22s have long remained the CCI Std. Velocity, but do love the CCI Small Game Bullets (flat points solids) for, well, small game (duh...). Again, thanks for another interesting video!

You sir, are excused. I know that stained and cracked hands come from hard work jobs. If your skin can stand it, wash with Dawn dish soap and once in awhile soak your hands in Clorox water, it is hard on your cracked fingers. Hope this helps you because you have certainly helped us with the 22 rimfire. Thank you.

Great video. Very good info on all of the cartridges. I've had similar results with hyper velocity 22LR ammo. It is devastating in expansion/fragmentation but is not generally as accurate at 50 yards as High Velocity ammo and definitely not as accurate as standard velocity/target ammo. I like the CCI segmented 22LR that you tested for woodchucks up close. 1 shot to the ear area and they don't move from the spot they were shot. In my guns I see the hyper velocity loadings not as long range (100+ yards) ammo but more for times when extreme expansion/fragmentation is need on medium sized varmints out to 75 yards. In guns that are more accurate with the hyper velocity ammo the range can sometimes be increased substantially.

Accuracy is definately of utmost importance, and there are rifles available that will shoot nicely with hot loads like the Stinger, or Yellowjacket.

Great informative vids. I don’t have nearly the range of 22’s that you have but I love the CCI Stingers they have always shot very well in all my guns. I’ve used them in a Remington 513 MatchMaster a Glenfield model 75 a marlin model 60 micro groove a Savage and also a Smith and Wesson M&P 15/22 and ( don’t laugh ) a bolt action that was given to me that’s so rusted that I can’t read the manufacturer. My least favorite of all you used in this vid is the Yellow Jacket. They never seamed to shot well in any of my rifles. I will expand on what I call accuracy. I hunted with a bunch of guys that if you didn’t head shoot a squirrel out to 65/70 yards you caught all kinds of grief ! Thanks for your vids. 👍

At one time I had a desire to learn checkering on gunstocks, so I tried my hand on some of my old .22 rifles. What you see in the video is 18 line-per-inch checkering that I did about 20 years ago .Looking back, there are a few I wish I had left in original condition. I appreciate your comment, Thanks!
