CCI's Mini Mag Still Going Strong After 60 Years
In this video I will be reviewing the CCI Mini Mag. Small yet mighty, it is one of America's favorite .22 rimfire cartridges, and no wonder. It is accurate, hard hitting, and cycles well in nearly any .22 rifle or pistol.

CCI introduced the Mini Mag the year I graduated from high school. What a benchmark!
I have several boxes of 100 count mini mags with a price tag of $2.96 from Gibson Discount Center bought in Lufkin Texas many moons ago. I took one out of the box and shot it out of my Thompson Center Hot Shot Boy Scout model single shot just to see if they were still good. Not a problem, still good. From the price tag you can see they are old.I look at the price and remember the good times.

Excellent video. Thanks
ANother great video. Decades ago, WW was my most accurate and trusted 22LR in my rifles, but then something changed with them. Then in the early 1980's, I retested the CCI Mini Mag in my 581 and 572, and it won hands down. Very often, the Mini Mag would give ragged hole 5 shot groups at 50yds, and in the 513T, it was the most accurate high velocity 22 I ever used. Given the speed of the Mini Mag and accuracy, I began sighting my squirrel rifles for 60yds instead of the traditional 50yds, and this gave me a mid range height above target, HOT, of only 1/4" or so. Thus, extending my point blank range on squirrels and other. Countless squirrels, rabbits, prairie dogs, black birds, crows and even a couple of deer have fallen to the Mini Mag, and today living in the West, I use it for long range shooting on prairie dogs and other. Through the years, I occasionally retest and test other brands and styles, but for high velocity 22LR's, the Mini Mag is still the top performer in most of my rifles. Again, thanks for the video

I was really impressed with the velocity. They are rather conservative in their velocity ratings listed on the box.
Another great demonstration of just how capable the Mini Mag is. I was astonished at not only the accuracy, but the consistency of the expansion. Also, a very tight deviation on the velocity. I am right there with Boomstick on the rounds I tend to concentrate on, the Mini Mags and Standard Velocity. It was a hoot riding along with you last night on the phone as we tracked that GunBroker auction, I’m looking forward to seeing that Winchester 69A on a future video. Congratulations on a good score.

I share what I can. Most of what you see in the videos is just what I experience as I film it.
I’ve always loved CCI mini mags and stingers. In 1971, I got a Marlin 989M2 for Christmas. I was 12 years old. It preferred CCI mini mags. That and stingers is bout near all I ever shot in it for hunting or if I wanted to hit small targets at longer distances. Great video on a great product.
Great video (just discovered it.) The Mini Mag has been my personal favorite 22LR round for a long time. About a year ago, during a move, I found in the drawer on my rifle rack several boxes of old ammo of various calibers, including half a box of Mini Mag 22LRs. This ammo was well over 20 years old, curious, I decided to try it out to see if it still was good. I shot several from a rifle and some more from a SAA revolver and was surprised to see that it appeared to be shooting as powerfully and as accurately as the day it was bough!
Another great video Mr CO !!!! I like CCI ammo very much and have also had good results using SK ammo too. Thanks and take care !!!! 😁🇺🇸😁🇺🇸

CO, this video is exactly why I commented in your "is this the worst 22 ammo in the world" video a week or so ago, that it is beyoond me why anyone would shoot anything other than CCI mini-mag 22 ammo. Thank you for proving my point !! Yes I know CCI is a bit more pricey than others, but, as they say, it's only money, you can make some more lol. Great video CO. It appears that the penetration at 100 was almost the same as at 50. I can tell you one thing.....I don't want to get shot with a 22 at either distance.
CCI mini mag HP’s were my favorite 22LR ammo for many years in my Ruger mark II and my Remington 541-T.
That's impressive! I didn't know they performed quite that good.

Come hinting season think I will be giving them a test.

Thanks for the kind remarks. Glad you liked the video. In regards to your free-range chickens...I'm pretty sure you don't have to wait until hunting season to take care the problem with foxes. If they are on your property and killing your livestock, you should be able to eliminate any varmints. I once had 26 Bantams that I raised. All of them fell victim to hawks and foxes, so I know how frustrating it is.

CCI Mini Mags have been my go to ammo since '75 in my Glenfield 60. The consistency is the best & I know if I miss it's me. I did use the Stingers when they first came out & I had to replace my buffers, so I went back to MM hp and the accuracy in my rifle, a little more tighter groups. Excellent demonstration of the CCI Minimag rounds.👍 Of the many types of 22LR that I shoot through my old Glenfield Mod 60, only the CCI mini's give 100% function and supurb accuracy and performance. Can't say the same with Federal or Winchester though. Too many misfires and scattered groups. I plink and practice with those (and others) and reserve the use of the CCI's for serious work on the varmints that run through my woods where I live. Thanks for the information and review. @@CumberlandOutdoorsman I grew up shooting my Uncle's Marlin Model 25MN and always thought back fondly on how well it shot and the associated memories of us target shooting and hunting. I had a Marlin Model 20 .22lr and we would shoot at targets we drew on paper plates and paper. That .22 WMR was too much on squirrels, but it excelled at crows, black birds and groundhogs. My Uncle passed and my first cousin ended up with the 25MN and said he was passing it to his daughter. So, I got to looking around for one just a couple of years back and couldn't find a 25MN at the time and settled on a 782, which looks similar. People are snatching up the JM stamped ones and driving the prices up on them, if you find one in good shape they're commanding good money. I have always had a fondness for the .22 mag, so yeah, get you a nice one and do some testing for us.

It’s good stuff. I’ve been wondering how that Browning 22 ammo would compare
A couple of years ago I lucked out and found a 581s. My go to ammo is the CCI Mini Mag 40gn RN and the 36 gn HP. The HP seems to be just a tiny bit more accurate than the 40gn .Norma is a tiny better then the CCI. The SV CCI is the most accurate, so far.The Mag Tec 40gnRN SV does fairly well, too. To get the Best out of the Federal Auto Match ya just have to WEIGH them. Then ones that weight the same hit on top of each other. The Light ones hit Low and to the Right, the heavies hit High and to the Left. My other 22 rifle is the Ruger "International". With both rifles I can hit a 8 inch steel plate at 100 yards 5 out of 5 At 200 yards 7 out of 10, with practice I should get a little better. It really doesn't matter what rifle or ammo, what it all boils down to is PRACTICE.

I brought a lots of ammo way back in 1970 when the price per brick was like $5.25 or 89 cents a box. I hide this ammo for 50 years and I was told that the shef life of any RIM fire ammo is 3 years old. The center fire ammo is about 5 years. I fired my father ammo that was a pre war era that made by Winchester Olin in Alton Illinois for Frankford Arsenal and all of them were performed well without issue. I do believe an old ammo is still good after dry and clean storage dispute the order to be destroyed by P. Clinton in 1994 under the crime bills for ex military ammo!

I have been shooting since the late seventies, and enjoy shooting 22lr. CCI has had some issues over the years. The quality has been up and down for accuracy and reliability. I didn’t shoot CCI for many years because of it. But in the last 15 years I started using it again and found it one of the better if not best products. I would use it over any of the European ammo. I just did a little bit of math real quick like and determined that it would take a 9 mm, 115 grain round traveling 1250 feet per second to equal the energy which these CCI mini mag hollow points deliver if you take into consideration the difference ratio in frontal area.
Well! I learned something today, and it's still early! I was surprised at the consistency of this, and had never seen the wet newspaper before. I thought there was going to be a block of something behind that. Wild! Recovering the actual bullets was a surprise to me. This all has a small personal interest locally, since I bought a bunch of this ammunition recently based on a wrong idea, and I'm kind of stuck with it! It's just paper targets for me, and I'm trying to standardize on standard velocity or sub-sonic now that I have... part of a clue. NOW I think that this ammunition (like the guns themselves) are better than me, and I just have to pick one or two pistols to only use the Mini Mags, and sight in like that, and just slowly use them up. I guess this will be that "trigger time" that people talk about. Well! I guess I can finish the video, clean a few pistols, and be at the range by the time it opens, with a new idea!
Good ol' Cascade Cartridges Inc. By the videos I've watched, seems maybe the most notable .22LR rimfire cartridge developed in recent times is the Federal Punch 29gr. It's quick enough in short barrels but really scoots in rifle barrels. Seems nothing can out-penetrate it in gel, and I've had a long list of rimfire loads I believed would, but haven't. Not sure what makes that bullet so capable of penetration, it doesn't appear to be super special, but it does have a bit of a flat point.
