The Amazing .22 Short Rimfire

In this video I will be discussing the diminutive .22 short cartridge, and whether it is still useful as a hunting/pest control round. I will cover a variety of loadings, especially the short hollow-point, and some vintage offerings by different manufacturers. I will also be featuring two .22 rimfire rifles as well. The Remington 552 Speedmaster, and the bolt action Remington 581, two of America's legendary smallbore rimfires. As with all of my videos, I emphasize safety and responsible gun handling practices as it pertains to target shooting and hunting. I hope you will find this video interesting and useful.

Dad was 8 years old when he came into possession of a broken .22 semi--auto rifle. He used a nail to replace the firing pin. That was 1928. He used 1 .22 Short per day to provide dinner meat of squirrel or rabbit during the worst winter of the Depression.

I inherited my dads Remington 550-1 and love shooting the shorts through it. My daughter can shoot well any gun I have, but her favorite is the 550-1 shooting shorts. Let the .22 short live on! Thanks for the very interesting video. I recently saw a video about shorts that explained that many people think that the shorts don't have much power because the sound so quiet as compared to the LR. The short is only around 18% slower than the LR, but many times quieter because it is below the speed of sound and has no sonic boom. In reality the short is more powerful than people may think.

.22 short is underrated for many applications. There's much talk about "survival" lately. In survival I like carrying as much ammo as possible. Small cartridges equal more in your pack! For survival i would only take a close shot anyway so not to waste ammo on a miss. A combination of shorts and LR in a bolt action is great. But, even a semi-auto can shoot shorts 1 at a time. I love shorts in my belt action for small game all the time.

Thanks for doing a video on the .22 short cartridge. My first .22 was a single shot .22 and for the most part, all I shot were Remington high velocity .22 shorts. We bought them at the local hardware for 50 cents a box. You're right, the .22 short is excellent for small game! I think only us shooters from the 1960's would know about the .22 short. I loved plinking with .22 shorts. Both of those Remmington rifles you showed were very nice guns. I like the guns made back then better. Occasionally I shot .22 longs and I liked the cartridge too. But, it seemed over time that everyone wanted the .22 long rifle cartridge and they wanted to keep trying to make it faster and more deadly. I always liked Remmington .22 shorts and long rifle cartridges in high speed "golden bullet" styles. I didn't think you needed anything more than that and that your focus should be on accuracy and shooting tight groups. I really liked the .22 short cartridge.

I appreciate your comment, but what I really enjoy are the great stories from days gone by like your recollection. So many memories go along with old .22 rifles, and the ammo we once used. I still remember my first real squirrel hunting experience, I was hunting on a military reservation, and I soon learned that early season squirrel hunting can be challenging because the leaves are still on. I hunted the tall hickory stands, listening for the sound of squirrels chewing hickory nuts and following the dropping bits of hickory nut. I would scan the limbs and branches to spot the squirrels in order to make a shot. A shotgun is much easier, but I prefer a scoped .22 shooting hollowpoint shorts. In my opinion it is much more sporting. Thanks again for sharing your story.

Similarly between the world of the .22 short is very similar to my .22-.25 caliber world of PCP air rifles. So quiet, so accurate, MOA at 75-100 yards. -850-1150+FPS. Similar grain projectiles. The technology has advanced light years in the past 5 years...it is amazing. So quiet...like a .CB 22 short. I used to use nothing but CB .22 rounds. Didn’t really need anything else for small game, and pest control. Underrated cartridge indeed. Awesome video.

The Remington 552 was my first gun in 1961 when I turned 14. I expected a single shot or a bolt action but my parents got me the semi auto, possibly because my father had a Remington Model 740. I used it mostly for hunting woodchucks on the farm along with a few sparrows and an occasional rabbit. I once shot a woodchuck at 200 yards prone with a 6X Weaver 22 scope. It wasn't until 1974 that I discovered a bulge in the barrel just ahead of the rear sight while cleaning the bore. I don't know how or when it happened altho I was given some old 22 ammo the first year I had it and had a squib round followed by a long rifle. By that time, I was using a Ruger 22-250 for the woodchucks and the 552 didn't get used much after I went into the Army after college. I don't recall any other instance of a squib load. I traded the gun in, scope and all, but I wish I had put a new barrel on it. I wonder who has it now. I used 22 shorts when I was low on money but then the 22 ammo manufacturers came out with promotional 22 long rifle ammo which was cheaper than the shorts and that was pretty much the death knell for the short. With the rise in ammo prices, maybe it will make a comeback. Much more competition now in terms of choices in 22 ammo but prices are still ridiculously high.

For your information Remington made another Simi auto rifle that would cycle all three 22 short, Long, and Long Rifle rounds. The 550-1 used a unique expansion chamber type method to make it function with all three rounds. Persons that own one of these rifles will almost always tell you that it really will not reliably cycle with the 22 shorts. I explain to these folks that they have let their expansion chamber seize up because they shoot almost exclusively 22lr an very seldom 22 shorts so when they finally do try to shoot the 22 shorts the expansion chamber is stuck closed on them and they won't cycle. With a freed expansion chamber my 550-1 will cycle 22 short, longs and Long Rifles flawlessly. Remington 552 is able to cycle all three rounds because the bolt is the weight of a pencil and about the same size as a pencil as well and they do function very reliably.

Found it for $70 missing a magazine, and managed to get a "new" Marlin 80 magazine to fit it with a bit of elbow grease. Bore is shinier than anything I've ever seen. Took the whole thing apart, got the old gunk and rust off of it. She's a beautiful old rifle now that the stock's been buffed. Shoots great!

Didn’t read every comment but will also say besides the 552, a Winchester 190/290/Ted Williams 3T, a JC Higgins model 31, and a Remington 550-1 will cycle all three 22 calibers. With a magazine and recoil spring modification a10-22 can be made to shoot them also.

The 22 short hollow-point is absolutely the best round for squirrels. If a head shot is not available it is far superior to the long rifle which is so hot that it will pass through the body with little impact. The short hollow-point will flat knock them out of a tree. I have a Marlin 39D which will accept short, long and long rifle interchangeably. Great video, thanks.

I am currently looking for a Marlin model 39. Great little shooters, and quite accurate for the most part. CCI is currently the only ammo manufacturer that make a .22 short hollowpoint. I hope other ammo manufacturers will start producing this kind of rimfire. Perhaps Aguila will come around to it since they specialize in rimfire ammo.

Hi ; I just found this video today, so I quickly subscribed to your channel. This brought back memories of when i was a kid back in the 1960's . If i wanted to hunt with my Dad's single shot .22, I would have to save up two dollars , then walk ten miles to where I could buy a small box of .22 shorts ,then walk back again. .. I also wanted to point out that the .22 short is still more effective than any of the modern air rifle/pellet guns that are out there. ...Thank You for a Great Video !

CCI, up until a few years ago, before the current “Quiet” 22s made CCI CB 22s in both 22 shorts and 22 longs. They were super quiet and could be shot indoors without ear protection. The noise actually coming from when the round hit its target. They were also quite accurate! They were in orange plastic boxes.

It was very accurate with just about anything you put in it and was extremely quiet with shorts . I had a Browning SA .22 short ATD Miroku made in Japan since the 70's and it is deadly on squirrels - I now have two of them - unlike the Remington 552 that uses a sloppy chamber design such that it is able to handle all types of .22s - and is both heavy and awkward - this one works flawlessly and is very light and handy - but amazingly - I have used that rifle to pop dozens of coyotes - one shot and down - never once has it failed me - and often at ranges of 75+ yards. As a kid I had learned about the .22 short - when I wanted to go squirrel hunting but was short cash for ammo - amazingly the .22 short was actually better for squirrel hunting in my old $15.00 Savage - a rifle that loaded better as single shot than as semiautomatic - but kill squirrels was what it did best. The Browning made things way too easy - the first time out I had 13 squirrels in less than two hours of hunting - the gun was extremely effective - so much so that I decided to only the tree rats running through the tree tops - but even doing that was ridiculously easy - plus the report was so mild that you didn't require time for things to settle down after shooting - the real surprise came though when we got word of feral dogs attacking the farm animals on a friends farm - we drove over there fast - all I had with me was that .22 short - my buddy took off on his dirtbike and beat us there - and by the time I was out and about with that .22 short - my buddy on the bike was being cornered by a huge and very aggressive German shepherd - and he was begging me for assistance as the snarling dog was closing in - I raised the little gun and shot one time - and just like that it was all over. I'm a dog owner and dog lover - but this was very different - I was stunned at how effective the diminutive .22 short was - so the next time I had my dogs out for a walk in the national forest - I brought it along - a coyote pack chanced on us and began working in to attack my samoyeds - big mistake - I just kept shooting and by the time it was over there were four less coyotes in the world - never underestimate the .22 short - it's a very can do round. Somewhere on here they assess the .22 short vs the .22 LR - and to their amazement - the little .22 short fared every bit as well in the testing as the .22 LR - (though there is a range limitation - certainly not a big deal to me). Winchester also makes the .22 short hp - but though they make it - nobody sells it - and I was about to buy a brick directly from Winchester - when I got word of some for sale - CCI copper plated HP - I now own 5,000 more rounds - in addition to the 500 rounds that I already had - a mix of the Remington/Augilla/Winchester/CCI from previous purchases - I'm good for a while.

WOW!!: Wonderful Time Machine is actually what the stubby .22 Short is!!.. This great video of you took me back some half a Century!. Not too many 2A ppl know .22Short was the first sucessful self.contained ctg, over 160 yrs ago. I'd dare think many of us Old Timers grew up in (IMHO) The Era of Innocence, when .22 Shorts ruled, and for bigger critters, .30-30 Win was enough, along with .30 'ought six. Probably after 60's - 70's the 'Magnumitis' Syndrome affected .22 Short popularity. Definitely, over 50% of my rifles are rimfires, from my Remi Nylon 66, (Loved it so much, I had a friend 'smith machine a 17.25" Marlin Microgroove cut.off bbl, which I glass bedded with great results, some 2" shorter OAL), thru my 541.S + Win 9422 Classic + Marlins 60 & 995 + Anschutz 54 Custom. Even my old S&W K.22, Ruger 22.45 MkIII as well as a couple.22 conversion kits for my 1.911's, being tuned for accuracy + reliability. Still prefer .22 Shorts, and YES, another .22 Short video is an awsome idea!!; BTW, C.O: I hope you're really doing better from those nasty 'stones. Many, many thanks & Blessings to you, family & followers!.. 😊🇺🇲💪🙏🙏🙏🙏

The .22 short is apparently still more popular than I thought, because whenever I find it available it always seems to go pretty quickly. I also don't see the need for the blistering cartridges that so many shooters have adopted. The standard calibers and cartridges have always been plenty powerful for me. If younger hunters and shooters would just practice patience, and develop shooting skills so they can put that bullet where it needs to go, then they can harvest game easily. I'll admit that magnum cartridges are more effective, especially at longer ranges, but more often than not a standard cartridge can do the job with the proper bullet and marksmanship.

I tend to agree. Todays kids (and to me anyone up to 30 years old is a kid) seem to want to shoot in rapid fire succession. I guess that's why AR's are so popular. We should be focusing on making every shot count, and practice good marksmanship. What good does it do to send dozens of rounds downrange and miss every shot? A cool marksman that can hit small targets at long range consistently one shot at a time is much more impressive to me. That's what we should be teaching our kids.

On semiautos cycling .22 shorts, another old rifle that will do it goes by many names. It was made by Savage and is commonly called the Gill Gun or Click-Clack. I have a Winchester 290 chambered in .22 Short, Long and Long Rifle. It cycles perfectly with the Shorts and you can definitely notice the difference in bolt cycle velocity when shooting the HV Long Rifles. So far I've only found the CCI .22 Shorts in the general vicinity of my grid coordinates They work just fine. I've knocked off several foxes and other smallish furbearers with it over the years using Shorts. I'm also confident they'd work on lynx and coyotes in thick cover at short range. My experience with the Shorts since I don't have another Short load to compare the CCIs to, is that at 25 yrds they group pretty tight. By the time they get to 50, they've opened quite a bit. Still minute-of-fox vitals, but I won't and don't need to risk shooting out past 50yrds.

I took a piece of Aluminum Round stock, drilled on the drill press, pilot hole drilled to keep every thing centered. Put a Short 29gn RN in the bottom, then I used a piece of Allen wrench with a sharpened point, pushing it into the bullet nose ever so lightly. This produces a nice HP. The Remington 580, 581, 582 series rifles have a very uniques bolt lock up method with six locking lugs at the rear of the bolt. This allows the head of the bolt to be free floating so when you lock a 22 round into the chamber the free floating bolt head allows the round itself to center the bullet head in the bore which increases accuracy. Also this bolt has I think the fastest lock time of ANY rifle made something like 600 mil a seconds. Lock time is the time the sear releases the firing pin to the time the firing pin hits the cartridge. The faster the lock time the better the accuracy. Bottom line is these series of rifles including the 541 which has the same bolt system are usually extremely accurate. All of them GREAT! Rifles.

Sir, I had a lovely old Winchester semi-automatic rifle (Model 74 I think and last made in 1955) that fired .22 short only. What a lovely rifle and very accurate at 25 yards with Eley Rapid Fire Pistol ammunition (around 700/750 FPS from memory). Unfortunately .22 short ammunition became very hard to get after the pistol ban in the UK and it very sadly went for scrap. I still miss it, especially as it was the gun that I used to teach my nine year old daughter to shoot. She is 37 now and still regularly sends me on a guilt trip for letting it go.

Great video with lots of good information that is valid... I have fired .22 shorts all my life of 61 years of hunting and shooting small game and even upland birds, ruf grouse , blue grouse that we have in the pacific northwest ... With election time heating up with more gun control crap on the agenda , panic buying set in once more in the pacific northwest , ammo is almost all gone.. some odd calibers .. I tried one of my favorite , Midway usa , backorder out of stock page after page , about all that's left is Olympic grade and Match grade ... Local gun stores here local all i could find in 4 different stores was .22 Shorts , not any problem for me so bought my limit of 3 boxes per day.. My Ruger 77/22 will feed .22 shorts even though it's not suggested by Ruger .. My Ruger revolver fires .22 shots fine .. My S&W revolver same thing , it fires fine groups on target .. All that was left on the shelve was CCI HV .22 Shorts.. I'm glad to have them ... It took my back to hunting small game 50 years ago using .22 shorts .. I even remember the price back then was $0.39 per box of 50 ..

Wow! I don't think the price will ever go back down to reasonable levels, but they should come down from what they are now as time goes by. I'm glad to see you got some ammo for you guns. Better to have .22 short than nothing at all, and as I showed in the video, the .22 short is still very useful. CCI makes some fine ammo. Thanks for sharing.

In the 50’s we could buy .22 shorts for $.40 cents a box of 50 or 6 -.22 shorts for $.05 cents at the General Store, and that is what we hunted with. We could sometimes buy .22 longs for 1 cent each, almost never .22 long rifle they were big medicine at 4 for $.05 cents. We always tried to get the most for our money on the farm, one shot one animal.

I think they should be ok as long as they were stored properly. The priming compound and powder should hold their integrity as long as the ammo isn't exposed to moisture. If you have some old boxes of ammo, they may be worth some money to a collector, so you might want to re-consider shooting it if that is your intention.

I had an old Glenfield model 25 when I was a kid back in the 70s. It would reliably feed .22 Shorts from its box magazine. I sold it many years ago because the action and barrel were set into the stock off center and angled to the left a little. It didn't effect performance at all but was aesthetically unpleasing to look at. That was the only bolt action .22 rifle I've ever had that would feed .22 shorts from a box magazine. Really wish I hadn't gotten rid of that Glenfield. It was not finicky about ammo and was accurate with just about anything I fed it.

We have been shooting shorts out of our heritage...the rounds all go bang, and are surprisingly accurate...we do have to spend a couple extra minutes cleaning the cylinder, but that isn't rocket science...our local gun shop has had the shorts on the shelf and even buying 1 box a day (limit), we have scored 800 rds...that is 800 rds of long rifle that gets to stay in the stash...

The Winchester model 190 semi-auto will shoot shorts very well. Doesn't say so on the barrel but it will. I suppose that trappers used and still use more shorts more than anybody else. Some states specify the 22 short be used on trapped furbearers.
