Hyper Velocity 22's

In this video I cover several different hyper velocity .22 long rifle cartridges, including some vintage ammo that is no longer made. I will be testing this ammo for accuracy, expansion, and velocity. I posted this video to give the viewer some idea of what to expect from truly high powered .22 rimfire loadings from different manufacturers.

Great 22 hyper comparison, I shoot 10/22, CZ455 and Ruger American 22 rifles, and Ruger and Taurus 22 revolvers and my experiences are the same - the stinger is a great cartridge, Aguila is not to be underestimated, and CCI works very well. I still feel that sub sonic works best in rabbit/squirrel hunting (especially in revolvers), and 22 short is still very viable for that critter size. Great video.

Hi CO. I remember when Stingers first rolled out. Man they were like something from Buck Rogers. Fancy blue box and 5 point hollow point, long plated case and light weight bullet. The damage they would do to a sealed can of Coke was unreal. I have been hoarding a box of Winchester Super X 26 gr. Tin HP in a red box. Rated at 1650 fps. I did open it but have never fired any. Thanks for the great content.

Happy to see that you used a 581. I have had mine for 4+ years. For as old as it was it didn't seem to have been shot to much. A through cleaning and very light oiling, this rifle will put bullet holes touching sized groups at 50. Golf Balls at 50 is just fun. Ammo selection is important. Agular Super Extra is the most accurate, CCI Select, CCI Standard velocity, Federal Target. The 581 is my Bolt Gun and I have a 10/22 International for my Semi Auto. Both are scoped with 3x9x40 Scopes. I look at it this way..... With a 22 you will never go hungry. A 22 WILL, "Break Contact". Practice and proper bullet placement is the KEY. I am very happy to see another 22 Nut out there. Keep up the Great work.

Fantastic & unbiased info!; ('course I subbed. I'd wish I could 10X!). 100% agreed w/ @Rob : Yours is a terribly underrated channel. I truly think it's OUR duty to share your great videos, specially regarding (most anyone's favorite) .22lr round worldwide. When I saw your rifle, I thought it was a Remi 541, but was quite amazed seeing an (apparently) Remi (steel?) 511 magazine inserted. As far as I know, those Remi 581/ 541 rifles were based on Remington's 540X Match rifle, it's bolt having six locking lugs arranged in pairs, spaced @ 120 degrees, much stronger than the average .22lr bolt rifle. Actually I believe it was slightly modified for models 591 & 592, (5mm Rem.Rimfire Magnum ctg), and later used as the basis for 5mm Craig centerfire ctg, (Now a Custom conversion by Eagle View Arms / Research Center @ Shelton, WA). If you have any info on conversion work to use Remi 511 magazines in the 541, I'd really appreciate it, as well as many other Remi 541 / 581 owners / users. Probably the only issue regarding the 541- S I own, (Among several rimfire rifles & pistols), is related to their fragile / unreliable original plastic magazines. Thank you for a superb review!!.🤗🙏🙏🙏🙏

Back when I had the eyes of a younger man, with first generation stingers, at 60 yards into water soaked news paper, out of a 6" standard model Ruger mk 1l, the bullets were just a mass of twisted lead. Extreme expansion, with a couple of inches penetration. Since then, they've reconfigured the mix, now they're still great rounds, but seem to perform much more desirably.

I’ve always been impressed with the Remington Yellow Jackets they cycled great and were accurate, but they were hell on squirrels. I usually just did headshots to save what little meat there was and it basically decapitated them. The Remington Gold and the Thunderbolt were very disappointing because of failure to fire and inaccuracy. The CCI Stinger never cycled very well in my Remington 552 Speedmaster so the Yellow Jacket was my go to hunting round. I was very disappointed when Remington stopped making the YJ. Hopefully, it will make a reappearance. I’ve got about 600 rounds that I’ve found thru Gun Broker over the years.

My favorite squirrel ammo was the same thing I used for rifle matches, the Eley Tenex or Eley match with the flat EPS point. !/4" groups at 50 yards, and quiet, and the flat pointed bullets hits with a big thud, really works better that hollow points, even on body hits, but I strived for head shots only anyway. Both the hyper velocity HP and solid Aquila’s won’t group worth a darn in my ultralux or browning target pistol. Both the stinger and hi shok will group at a half inch at 50 yards. Not great but enough to get the job done. The Winchester 333’s shoot all in the same hole and anchor squirrels better for me. I tried the velocitors on squirrels. They stop them quicker then the 333’s but don't group as well out of my gun. Wish I could find yellow jackets. Haven’t seen them in stock anywhere since the 80’s.

I was never inclined to use hollow points. I preferred to use a semi-auto Cooey / Winchester. (Probably a fluke, but it was one of the most insanely accurate rimfire rifles I'd ever encountered (got it for Christmas when I was seven and used it almost exclusively into my 30s) My personal experience was that hollow points had slightly softer tips, with a tendency to 'chip' during the loading cycle. It may have been a characteristic of that particular model, but that 'chip' would obviously have an affect on accuracy. I stuck to solid tips in the semi and only used hollow points in a cz bolt gun. Those flat tips seem like a perfect compromise. Good video!

I stick with standard velocity Norma match or Eley Match ammo than i,m sure i shoot 1 centimeter groups on 50 meters and with a moderator super quiet. As you told a well placed precision shot is the way to go. The Velociter has a standard case length. I would not recommend to use a longer case length in match rifles. Cheers!

Each rifle will tend to do best with a few specific loads and others not so much. With .22 LR, probably the single biggest factor for that is rim thickness and how that matches up with the individual rifle chamber. It's even common for two of the exact same make and model of .22 LR rifle with one of the two shooting excellent groups with a given cartridge, but the other not doing very well with the same cartridge. There are several other variables with each cartridge that control how it will do.

I too, am impressed at your knowledge of this old ammo. I still have a full box of the old blue box stingers that no longer has the old label you showed at the beginning of the video. I originally bought 2 boxes and used them sparingly. I have since bought some of the later boxes of stingers. If the ammo supply ever breaks loose again i will get a decent supply of velocitors but not at todays prices. I always used T-22 standard velocity for all my 22 hunting and shooting which was for squirrels. This was more than enough for squirrel at any distance imo. Most of the local coon hunters used a small cheap single shot 22 to bring down treed coons using cb caps and sometimes shorts because of noise while in woods that they had no permission to be in. .22 is a very versitile and useful round

I sometimes find vintage ammo at gun shows. I recently got some Winchester .22 short hollowpoint (3 bricks), and some Remington/Peters short hollowpoint. It was a relatively rare find, but sometimes I get lucky. I also picked up a brick of T-22 ammo that is still in pristine condition. I may shoot a video featuring this older .22 ammo. Thanks for commenting.

I found the T-22 ammo to be very consistant but i was not and am not a good judge of such things. I did buy it on the recommendation of an experienced shooter back in 70ish time frame. Tom was a cherished friend that has regrettably passed from cancer. A

Indeed they are. The rifle I was using typically shoots Stingers much better than what was depicted in the video. After about two or three shots, that gun can print some impressive groups with most anything. Mixing up the ammo the way I did, was unfair to the gun.

@@CumberlandOutdoorsman I've missed them up before even with center-fire rifles I always wandering if it's different powder fouling the barrel that makes them not shoot not as good generally because the rifle liked both loads by themselves but not when being mixed and I didn't take the time to clean the barrel before switching

This is one of the biggest problems I have found with the 22 rimfire ammo is that you can not find what your gun prefers or the type bullet you need for your use after a few years because they quit making it.

True That's why it pays to find a cartridge that does well that also has many decades of popularity to see that it stays in production. That's one of the reasons why it's so nice if you have a gun that does well with one of the real classics, such as CCI Standard Velocity.

Good point. I have a Winchester model 52 that has a slightly shorter chamber. When I load Stingers or Expediters into it, the front of the bullet bearing band engages the rifling. Thanks for watching.

To help allot of folks with older 22s is to research which rifles with shorter chambers will not accept the longer cases as the stinger. Jammed big time in the Remington Mod. 550-1. now I would like to make you all cringe. I was a dealer in the 70s, bought 20 bricks for $ 16.50 per and over the years gave grand kids a brick for birthdays and Christmas, I cry with 1 brick left today.

Don't judge ammo by three round groups. Do an average of five 10 shot groups and then decide. Particularly with .22 ammo which can be very variable even in single lot of ammo. Also get your bore seasoned before shooting groups.

The same reason some people keep a gun in it's original box for decades without shooting it.........for collectability. Some folks keep wine bottles without ever opening them, and as time goes on the vintage becomes more and more valuable.
