I agree with you on most of your points here. I (at 30) have never felt an active desire to have kids and don't expect that to change, but I certainly don't hate them. All of that young couple's grasping for reasons not to have kids honestly made me think their disgust was less about the kids themselves and more about an unwillingness to give up their own childhoods. That said, there is one thing I disagree with, which is about sterilization. I think it's very disturbing and upsetting that women aren't allowed to get their tubes tied at will or even (in the US) have trouble getting medically advisable hysterectomies to deal with issues like endometriosis when a man can, at any time, get a vasectomy. It's incredibly condescending and controlling. If a woman gets sterilized and regrets it, well, at least it was her mistake to make. At least no one denied her the right to choose what happened to her own body.

Some people have genetic disorders that they don't want to put a child through, some people are aware that they have psychological deficiencies and wouldn't be fit parents, some people know that children are just not part of their plans and would interfere with their improvements to the human race. Many women have adverse effects from hormonal birth control and birth control does harm them. I can't take hormonal birth control (I've tried more than 20 types), and due to the shape of my uterus (it's sorta heart shaped with a septum), IUDs are contra-indicated. My son was very sick right from the start. The colic was terrible and I was sick when he was born, so the docs had mercy and switched him to formula. Then soy formula. Then this insanely expensive pre-digested formula made for extremely sensitive infants that needed a prescription, but wasn't covered by insurance. The sage has ups and downs until we discovered that he was a Celiac at age nine. SO MUCH got better! We had a new kid! He was calm and happy and humorous and loving. For one year it was perfect. Then he became a Type 1 diabetic. A brittle diabetic, at that. (Yes. it exists. It means 'we can't get him regulated and we don't know why.') Until he was 15 and we discovered that he had Selective IGA deficiency and all those nuisance infections were throwing his glucose off. Of course I couldn't expect the public school system to deal with that, so I home-schooled him for 7.5 years. Once we figured out the immunity issues, the doctors were ON it. No more waiting to see if he'd get over a sinus infection. He wouldn't. A rash got immediate attention. With the infections under control, his blood sugars stabilized over night. He could go to school. Of course he was a willful, thought-he-was-hilarious, too-smart-for-his-own-damn-good PAIN IN THE BUTT, but his small town teachers and the admin were awesome, did understand him, and did love him, so he made it. He graduated and started working and immediately began to take care of himself. All was good in my world. Then he wrecked his motorcycle and died at the age of 22. (great hobby you got there, Gains!) At first, I was so defeated. I'd been to hell and back with this person and to have it end like that was so... wrong. Unjust. Tragic, even. After his funeral I sat in a quiet moment and asked myself, "Was it worth it?" Took about 3 seconds to answer. YES! NOBODY on this planet frustrated me more And NOBODY else on this planet made me laugh more. I genuinely enjoyed his company. His humor. His thoughts. Our discussions. You'd never have met a more encouraging soul. I know that I pushed myself harder for him than I'd ever have pushed myself for me. He made me grow. Just knowing him brightened my life and helped me to develop into a stronger, better educated, more determined person. I'm better for having been his mother. And I do use my knowledge and experience to help others. Yes, I'd do it again. Wish I could do it again with knowledge and foresight to spare him pain and death, but I'd do it again. He was a great guy. A wonderful friend. A loving man. He adored animals in a way that few people can. He loved small children and took up the big brother role in about two seconds after being introduced. He was obnoxious and hilarious and taught me to lighten up and enjoy the moment. Nobody ATE life like he did. Knowing him was a privilege. And grieving him is a privilege, too. He's one of the most important, influential people in my life. I cannot regret our time together. I've lost nothing by mothering this young man. And I gained the world.

Conor's Hell that is competent decision making, but having kids doesn't fit this equation of decision making. A child and even grown children will most likely take more than they will ever give. Also you just can't account for how life with children will turn out. When it comes to moving or buying a new car, you can ask, 'what will I get out of it?' You can't ask the same of a child. By asking this question, it also has you operating under the assumption that this potential person's life exists in large part to serve you.

My best friend and one coworker got pregnant exactly like that as well. I can’t believe people actually use that, at least I had the excuse of being young and inexperienced. So many women get pregnant with that “method” (it’s honestly not even a method, it’s just basically up to how fertile the woman and the man are, and where in the cycle the woman is).

I've worked in a few restaurants, and I have to say. A guy challenging other patrons to street fight is much worse for business than any screaming child, as it actively creates a hostile environment for people, rather than simply annoying the clientele. In other words, if I was the manager, I would have sooner kicked out richard for being a complete wad, than kicked out the father for having a fussy baby.

The key is like you said though, secure attachment with your pets is an example of secure attachment other human beings. I’m not saying sign up every woman for sterilization as soon as she asks, but don’t please don’t call an abortion, half a dozen suicide attempts, and a lifetime of depression and anxiety a “minor inconvenience.” Other than that, as far as this vid goes, I agree, shaming parents for being parents is sucky.

I understand that doctors have restrictions on permanent irreversibel surgeries (in Germany useles cosmetic surgeries have the same restrictions, on verry young people)(vasectomy or Sterilisation are treated the same here .gender neutral in these aspect). But with people like you, who have NOother alternatives, there should be EXEPTIONS. And the cost of freezing eggs should be covert! They took me back our apartment and put me under the shower because I would not stop still. Kids cry sometimes because of no reason and you can't do anything. I read a thread once where parents shared their kids crying over ridiculous stuff. One girl was laying on the floor screaming because her mother wouldn't let her wear her dirty underwear on her head. Kids are not very logical sometimes.

God, I'm only 6:20 in but... Christ. I'm autistic. I won't deny that I can tell it made raising me more difficult - and yeah, having a developmentally disabled child can be unexpected and harder to take care of them. But just the idea of them implying that autism isn't "normal" and that a child being disabled is a big enough "con" that they'd advocate against having kids with that being one of their major reasons. Also these people seem to think that kids don't have emotions; or at least they don't care about the emotional state of kids. Bloody oath.

Hoosayne I apologize if my response here is more sloppy; i have a headache and can't concentrate well. Well, you have a point, but I guess my problem lies in the social implication of not being "normal". People tend to use "not normal" to insult and dehumanize people - which is why some, including myself, get uncomfortable when our behaviours or conditions are called such by non-medical professionals. Yeah, it's their choice. Not everyone is fit to be a parent (especially to a disabled child), and it's good for people to reflect on whether or not they can support a child and help them to be happy and healthy. The tone and theme of the video seems to imply that they think people in general should be wary or having kids because they could be disabled, which again not everyone is fit or prepared for a disabled child, but it also pushed the "disabled people are unwanted" narrative. Hopes this made sense.

I don’t exactly know how it works in the US but here in Canada (where these two are from) especially in the province of Quebec (where these two live), parents (at all income levels) get an unbelievable amount of financial support from the government given that wage growth is stagnant and that our birth rate is terrifyingly low. So this idea that having a child is THAT expensive is more a myth than anything at this point.

21:32 In my opinion, doctors do not have a responsibility to not sterilize people; even if it is the case that most people regret it. I am sure there exist people who regret having a sterilization surgery. However, if you do regret being sterilized, that only affects you. That is fair. If you want to get sterilized and you can't, you may have a child for whom you are not ready, You might even regret having kids. I would rather 100 people regret having a sterilization surgery than even one person regret having kids. I am gonna nail my flag to the mast on this one. If a woman wants to get sterilized, her gynecologist should be expected to sterilize her and be fired if he/she does not. When you go to McDonald's to order a burger, the fry cook is not allowed to decide not to make you a burger, because he believes you should have a salad instead. If the fry cook refuses to make you that burger, he will be fired. I believe that doctors should be expected to do their jobs in the same way that McDonald's employees are.

I was a nanny (recently left that job) for six years. My oldest little girl used to throw a tantrum every single time we left the house. One day my two girls’ parents needed me to get medicine for the youngest’s flu. Oldest little girl had a full on meltdown and I had my arms full of an infant. I sat next to my oldest little girl calmly and had to sit there until she screamed herself out because I could not safely carry her out of the store. When she was done I told her to look around. She was mortified at the whispering people. She never had a tantrum with me again. That tantrum saved future disruptions. She became a better little human for it. Sometimes you’re on the receiving end of a life lesson and have to deal with it. I really hate it and recently was at a high end restaurant for my engagement dinner where there was a screaming child. My maid of honor and I went to offer help and encouragement. That isn’t a brag, its part of life and it should be normal. You don’t have to interfere or ask if you can help, but those kids have every right to be there same as you.

I'm 37 years old and I don't want and have never wanted children. Amongst many jobs I've had, I waited tables for 15 years. Kids have never bothered me. Ever. In extreme instances where kids are being out of control (loud, messy, running around, etc), I've never felt any animosity toward the child or children. It's always a case of the parents not controlling their children, and I feel sympathy for the kids. I have a nephew who is severely autistic. He's funny, intelligent, loving, witty, just the sweetest boy I've ever known (biased, clearly). He is incapable of behaving well for any decent length of time. He looks perfectly "normal". It's extremely stressful and anxiety inducing for my sister to take him out in public. While a dine in restaurant isn't ideal for him, even taking him to stores or parks or on walks or anything, he's going to act out in ways people don't understand. He does it at home, too, so it's just his behavior, a result of his autism. Should he be shut in and not taken out in public or social settings because people are going to get angry and annoyed? Granted, he would not be left to his devices if he was having an incident in a restaurant, he'd removed and returned once he'd calmed down, but I really can't wrap my head around the mindset of Vegan Gains' video. These are children. Even in the cases where the parents are clearly in the wrong, I can't imagine feeling righteous in approaching the parents and then making a video about it a though it were justified. You never know what is going on in people's lives. What may be annoying to you could be someone else's constant struggle. Have some empathy, if not for the parents, at least for the children.

*A. The scientific consensus is that the brain stem development connects the nervous system and activates pain reception, which begins a couple of weeks after the abortion cut-off. Any living organism, right down to atoms, will have an adverse reaction to a negative stimuli but it doesn't necessarily mean they can also feel pain. I also just discovered that fetuses show no signs of wakeful brain activity until 30 weeks when EEG tracking is used. Here's the study: jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/201429

I have yet to meet a rational vegan that isn't a controlling psychopath. They pretend to be so sensitive yet are quite intolerant of others. Studies typically say that most women do not regret sterilization, though women under 30 are more likely to. But most doctors say no because "what would your husband think/what if he wants kids"? Well then we aren't right together. Sorry. Kids aren't something either party should compromise for. I don't want kids. I'm not a huge fan of them (though I don't hate them like these two seem to), I have multiple genetic problems on both sides of my family I do not want to pass on, and I suspect I have some problems in the reproductive organ area. It's not about statistics, its about permanent irreversible decisions, that you are asking another human (the surgeon) to take responsibility for completing on your behalf, and if they don't want to do it, they don't have to. If one doctor says no, just keep looking, you'll find one willing to do it eventually. I agree that if you don't want children, you should be with a partner who has the same parenting goals as you. Men and women should talk about it more and be honest with eachother early on. It's hard when those goals change though.

If you change your mind you can adopt. I think sterilisation and vasectomies should be quite freely given (with appropriate screening). Considering the cost and adverse effects many experience from contraception, I think sterilisation would be a good option for many. I don't agree with loads of what these people say or their behaviour but I don't think everyone has to like children as long as they respectful and kind, and there are PLENTY of people who really, really don't want kids for such a huge number of reasons. I'm surprised you're not open minded to this. When they say they couldn't travel and have motorbikes if they had kids, they might be totally right - my parents did not have money for travelling etc. because they chose to have kids. Many people on lower incomes sacrifice a lot to have kids - that's great, but it's fine to not want that. You can even understand that having children is really rewarding, and still decide that for you, the benefit does not outweigh the cost. I just don't see the point in commenting on their opinions on this - you could expose your point of view and experience without saying "and this is why these people are wrong"

Why do you all think that socialism is so fucking good? What is so wrong with the free market? What is so wrong with the idea of one person making more money than the other? And also, with socialism, who really has the money? The common man, or the government? If you think about it at a fundamental level, the whole world is anarcho capitalist. And nations are just bigass businesses. Socialism is like Comcast on steroids. It is a bigass government monopoly. Why do you think that rich national leaders would be any less greedy than big company CEO's? Because you vote for them? Not if they can help it. Look at Russia, Putin can just win the election all his life because nobody dares defy their nation's only rich person. At least in the free market, you get a choice to spend where your money goes (at least somewhat here in the US with our crumbling market). Guess what else you can do in the free market: You can make more than another person. Sounds crazy right?! Like, if you work a riskier job or if you're more skilled than someone else or chose to go into education for a career then it is likely that you will be more *QUALIFIED* and *USEFUL* in a position than someone else. And *YOU* worked for that position. No fucking government told you that you have to work here or there or go to this school or that school. Seriously, fuck socialism and fuck every socialist motherfucker out there. Call me a fucking crony capitalist do whatever the fuck you want but *YOU'RE ONLY MAD THAT YOU DON'T HAVE AS MUCH MONEY AS THE PEOPLE WHO ARE GETTING OFF THEIR ASSES AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD*. That's right, the billionaires are the people that actually give a shit. Oh, socialism is so good for the public, so good that Russia's dominant population is a bunch of fuckin useless Gopniks who squat with their buddies who do a half day of work for a month and waste space. We have the same shit in the US too because everyone collects that sweet *WELFARE AND FOOD STAMPS BECAUSE OUR KIDS MAKE US MONEY BY BEING ALIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE TO WORK*. Textbook fucking socialism at it's worse in a country that's supposed to be a representative of the "free market". Meanwhile we have useless druggies crossing the boarder and making dough while the common man can't get a job because we have to pay people that work part time as a cashier at mcdonalds living wage and no company can afford to hire anyone. Socialists are fucking stupid. There will always be poverty, but socialism is the best way to maximize it and spread it throughout a nation.

All the points that young couple used made me shake my head. For every "negative" thing they named the kids give you a million "positive" moments. Oh the "if you can afford a child, you can adopt." Um, no. There's this thing called health insurance. MOST employers offer it. It covers the vast majority of birthing costs. The number of employers that offer adoption assistance is way more rare. I know this for a fact because of my situation. A little story: My husband and I got married late in life (his 2nd marriage, my first). He has a daughter with his ex-wife that we co-parent with her (50/50 custody) I love her to pieces and really wanted add a baby brother or sister to our family. I tried unsuccessfully to conceive for about a year and a half, prior to being diagnosed with cancer (which guaranteed I would never have kids). We looked into adoption and the cost of adopting a baby started at $10,000 - and that was just the agency's fee. We looked into adopting out of foster care and the sheer amount of red tape and waiting required (including you have to be a foster parent first and as a foster parent there's no guarantee that the child you're caring for and grown to love, won't be taken out of your home and sent back to the birth parents) made it ultimately something my husband and I decided wouldn't be best for our family. But saying that instead of having a baby, one should just adopt is ridiculous and really offensive to people. Adoption isn't for everyone either!

It's actually very likely that the kid isn't out that often because the parents generally got someone to babysit or just didn't go out, and the one time they decide to take their kid with them, they cry because they are in an unfamiliar environment. I experience this with my toddler all the time when he is put in a crowded place. He was crying and fussy at his own birthday party. Kids do that.

We had chores and whatnot and by the time we were around 10 , we had all those lessons down pat and while we still had babysitters, we didn't need them at 13 as we were pretty self-sufficient (Our mom passed away when we were 10 and my dad was a single working parent). If you teach your kids basic necessary things, it does make it a little easier.

But also (and because this was filmed years ago I’ll give you credit and hope some mindsets have changed), I think it is really terrible how doctors treat women, and it goes beyond even just having babies- like for example, when a woman presents symptoms of a debilitating disease, and we’re told its anxiety. But back to the issue of doctors not allowing women to be sterilized at a certain age- sometimes it’s medically necessary, like in the case of my friend who had extremely aggressive endometriosis and they only allowed her to get a hysterectomy AFTER she had two children. She suffered for years because they wanted to make sure she didn’t change her mind about kids, and dismissed her obviously traumatic and debilitating symptoms.

  • @latunda1281
    @latunda12814 жыл бұрын

I was a little disappointed to hear your thoughts on sterilization, regretting getting your tubes tied is a much smaller problem than the amount of unwanted children we have in the system. Women don’t tend to regret it. Birth control is expensive and it isn’t harmless; I’m a medical interpreter and I’ve heard tons of women complain about horrible side effects from various forms of birth control. I personally don’t know if I want children, I’m pretty sure I don’t but I’m a bit young to decide. Most women that feel like me would rather avoid the procedure. Women that opt for the procedure are dead set on never having children. I personally don’t care if that couple changes their mind or not, I think they aren’t fit to be parents and I would greatly appreciate if they both got fixed.
