    Regarding the honey, I’m a bee farmer in training, and I want to clarify that we aren’t cruel to our bees in any way. They live naturally, but call our hives their home. A single bee makes 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in their entire life, but they only eat less than a quarter of that amount. Bees produce large quantities of excess honey that they simply don’t use. We harvest that excess and use it. Bee farms like ours are the only reason bee populations are even alive today. The natural honey bee, an insect that’s absolutely essential to the environment, is dying out due to pollution and habitat encroachment. It’s the hard truth, and the only way we’ll be able to sustain the population is through controlled bee farms. The only way many vegetables, produce, and flower species will survive is through controlled and monitored bee populations. Please, if you want to support the bees, buy organic honey. It does no harm to the bees, but actually helps them massively.

  • @debanydoombringer1385

    @debanydoombringer1385

    4 жыл бұрын

    You are way over stating honey bees role. It's not because of bee farmers that bees are alive today. Yes native bees are insects, but so are honey bees so I'm not sure why you felt the need to make that distinction. Honey bees are an invasive species and contrary to the picture you are attempting to paint, are responsible for a miniscule amount of pollination minus almond farms. There is a new species that's here now harming the wild bee because it's aggressive and guards any area it claims for pollination. There is no where near enough honey bees to even begin to replace the wild bee nor can there be because they can't survive the winters in many areas like wild ones can.

    People who believe consuming honey and beekeeping is immoral is willfully ignorant to how beekeeping works. I have been keeping bees for months now and I’m constantly learning more about them. There are so many misconceptions about beekeeping and it’s very frustrating sometimes. Here are some examples of things I’ve learned since I started beekeeping: 1. *Smoking bees* is NOT harmful for them. Obviously you don’t want to light a campfire under the hive, but a few puffs of white smoke to mask their alarm pheromones is beneficial for both the bees and the keeper. Bees communicate through smell, and if one bee thinks there’s danger, she will alert other bees to attack. The smoke disguises that smell and drives the bees back down into the hive so they aren’t crowded at the top. I usually don’t even have to smoke my bees, they’re usually docile and I can read their body language to know if they’re getting upset. 2. *Some bees get killed in the process* but it isn’t dozens all at once. We’re very careful not to squish them, but it is inevitable that some will die here and there. It hurts my heart when it happens, and I try to avoid it to the best of my ability. What we do for the bees by inspecting their hives and make sure everything is running smoothly makes up for the fact that some may perish in the process. It’s in the keeper’s best interest to avoid squishing the bees. 3. *Honey bees are competition for native bees* (depending on where you live), but there are ways to increase native populations of bees too. Non-honey producing bees are just not profitable (although they do a better job of pollinating) compared to the financial benefit of selling honey. But many beekeepers have native bee houses as well as honey bee hives, and it’s a growing trend even among non beekeepers. They’re very easy and inexpensive to make, and there’s hardly any maintenance involved. People who think beekeeping is unethical just don’t know enough about it, same as everyone else in the world. I’m constantly answering questions from people who are curious about how beekeeping works, and I was even able to do a demonstration of a hive inspection for an audience of friends. I wish people would do their research on honey bees before concluding that honey is morally bad just because someone on youtube said it was. It’s so much more complex than *animal product = bad*

    @@somad6997 Not eating honey won't really do anything for the death of the bees and instead impact the livelihood of the thousands of surviving bees. Again, there is no food you can consume that hasn't killed insects in some way or another, be it accidentally or on purpose. So it is better to support one that intentionally tries to avoid it or lump them all together anyways? Regarding "exploiting" the bees, I can assure you that they do not care. It's a mutually beneficial relationship. The bees get protection for generations in exchange for their excess honey. There is a reason exploitation is bad but that's just not what's happening here 🐝🐝

    @@joshb895 I can understand trying to minimize damage and harm in our diets but I still believe the logic holds that honey does that just fine to be considered vegan friendly. If all food industries kill, ones that actively try to avoid it should not be lumped with the rest. That's the point, right? To minimalize? Also there's nothing wrong with beekeeping. Irresponsible beekeeping will allow invasion but that doesn't need to be fought with boycotting honey. There's different ways. And yes, they are taken care of more than a wild bee. Nothing wrong with it. I'll repeat my points just as often as you do yours. I defend honey because I legit care about the business and just do not agree that it's not vegan. An opinion developed and backed by many other vegans so it genuinely doesnt matter that I'm not one. We'll likely go back and forth forever tho so no real need to keep debating about it tbh lmao

Does she research every piece of clothing to make sure it or the material it's made from didn't come from a sweatshop? Sounds like someone who is clearly reaching and obviously name dropping for nothing but notoriety and views. Edit: Someone literally commented on her "off grid shower" video that the pipes she uses aren't vegan because "plastics manufacturers use animal fat additives to improve material properties and/or to aid in the processing of raw polymers." Thank you! I have a lot of vegan friends, some of them have introduced me to some of the most delicious meals out there, but since I have a nut allergy, I cannot participate fully in veganism. I know a lot of people have dietary restrictions that make everyday eating much more challenging, and sometimes going fully vegan will affect that. I do my best to remove meat and milk from my diet (which is extremely difficult in a Hispanic household, my dad makes carne asada every week) and increase the amount of vegetables and fruits to my diet, but it’s an effort. Hopefully, one day, people can enjoy food while still being aware of the impact they make with their food choices and care for the planet AND those that live on it.

    Bingo! I doubt I'll ever go 100% vegan, but I make a conscious effort to limit my consumption of meat because it's a practical (for me) way that I can have a positive impact on the environment. At this point I probably only eat meat 1 or 2 days a week. And it's not like I miss it! If everyone did this, the world would be such a better place with so much less animal suffering and an overall healthier global ecosystem. And it wouldn't require a huge shift in lifestyle, which is something that most people just find intimidating, if not outright impossible depending on their situation.

    Agreed so much. "It's the little things" is a good saying. Everyone is in a different place in their life...you can only try so hard if you also want to keep your mental health, especially if you have other stressors in life. I'm vegetarian, not vegan because I'm at a point in my life were it would not be practical (for many long reasons) and we're I can't mentally deal with the stress of more societal judgment about my diet... I mean, my family almost disowned me when I went vegetarian lol. Meat eaters included, everyone has their reasons. Shade never made anyone less omnivorous (yes that's a Taylor reference). I started being vegetarian by making small changes. As silly as it sounds, that first step was learning HOW TO FIND vegetarian recipes (I'm not entirely sure I knew they existed😂). Apparently all you have to do is google 'vegetarian recipes'. WHO KNEW??? Then I started eating a flexitarian diet and slowly (like over the course of 2 YEARS) became vegetarian. But you know what? I still eat sushi sometimes because it's my mom's favourite thing to do with me and I love her more than fish . But you know what? I love to challenge myself to make vegan recipes and I actively support/defend vegan products/people. (Almost) everyone is trying to do good. The causes we support and the ways we show our love for humanity/ the planet may be different, but we are all trying to accomplish the same goal.

    I am a vegan and while I agree, a lot of vegans start off really radical then boomerang back. I think Freelee missed that stage. It is like a lot of people who find Christianity or Islam or other "strict" religions and become radical or a zealot (in a good way) then find a happy medium.

    I've been vegan for 4 years and just today I accidentally drank milk! Trader Joes was handing out samples of cold brew coffee and without even thinking about it I took the sample and as soon as I took a small sip I realized it had milk. Oops, but NO BIG DEAL.. I also bought some "meatless" sausage patties a few weeks ago and realized after I ate THE WHOLE DAMN BOX that they contained egg. I read the label when I bought them too! I somehow missed the egg in the ingredients, and I read nutrition labels religiously. Anyways, Freelee is crazy and makes us vegans look unreasonable and makes this lifestyle seem impossible.

    Thank you so much for this. I found your video because I LOVE Jenna and she and Julien are the main reason I've been vegetarian/vegan for almost a year now! I appreciate your empathy; as a relatively new vegan, I've made the "slip up" mistakes where I misread a label or was ignorant to how something was cooked, and I've made the very conscious "screw it, I'm sad, I want cheese" mistakes. While a Freelee video can be understood as a "call-to-action" from my semi-vegan brain, you make me feel "forgiven" for my slip-ups and it makes me want to continue on this journey even more. After watching this, I don't feel like there's no going back because of past mistakes, I just feel like tomorrow is a fresh start. Thank you for your compassion to all life and for your patient, empathetic heart that draws people to your message. You just made my night.

    25:01 People who eat meats can still be distraught over animal abuse? I'm sure this wasn't what you meant it to sound like (only non-meat eaters can be upset by animal abuse), but I raise my own meat rabbits. They are treated like pets and I know where my food is coming from. This way I don't have to support the big meat industries. I haven't tried going vegan, but i do make vegan meals every now and then just to switch up my diet. I've met some really nice and passionate vegans but a lot of them (vegans) seem to jump to the "oh, you eat meat, you're practically torturing those animals with your own hands" Snob mentality. To clarify, not all vegans are like this, I'm just agreeing with OP's 'cult' comment she made. Totally unrelated but the SD community is JUST as bad. Any mistake gets you dragged and once you've made that mistake its like you're shunned.
