Updated 2024 Hyundai Sonata review // Enough to save the sedan market?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This is a Motormouth couple car review of the updated 2024 Hyundai Sonata mid-size sedan. There are only two 2024 Hyundai Sonata trims in Canada and four in the US including a hybrid. The hybrid powertrain is no longer being offered in Canada for 2024.
The base 2024 Hyundai Sonata engine is a 2.5L 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 191 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options are available.
The more powerful 2024 Hyundai Sonata engine in the N-Line model is a 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder with an 8-speed wet dual clutch transmission, 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. FWD only.
In the US, the hybrid has a 2L 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain with a combined 192 horsepower.
The 2024 Hyundai Sonata looks so much better than the outgoing model with a new grille, slim headlamps, larger air intakes and redesigned rear taillights and bumper. The 2024 Hyundai Sonata gets a tire repair kit in Canada. In the US, a temporary spare tire is standard. Hybrid models in the US have a tire repair kit.
If you are interested in sportier looking Sonata go for the N-Line model with gloss black exterior accents, an N-Line grille and rear bumper, N-Line badging, dual exhaust tips and 19” wheels.
The interior of the 2024 Hyundai Sonata has also been refreshed with a floating theme at the centre console, upgraded technology including wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto on navigation and non-navigation models. The dual 12.3” screens look clean and simplistic, the steering wheel gets an update and the gear selector has been moved from the centre console to a new column shifter by the steering wheel.
The 2024 Hyundai Sonata starts at $35,256 CAD and N-Line $41,856 CAD. In the US, SEL $27,500 USD, N-Line $34,950 USD, SEL Hybrid $30,800 USD and Limited Hybrid $37,200 USD.
For Fuel Economy, (base engine) FWD 9.6L/100 km, 25 MPG city and 6.5L/100 km, 36 MPG highway. AWD 9.9L/100 km, 24 MPG city and 7.0L/100 km, 34 MPG highway.

I drove the 2024 Elantra for a couple of weeks and can tell you why I might pick it over a base Sonata. It's the lightness, the agility, plus lower fuel consumption. Nothing in its class is easier to drive. It reminded me of that every time I drove it. The fact that it has a roomy back seat is icing on the cake.
Currently leasing a ‘23 Sonata NLine and after selling my Infiniti, have been quite pleased. I *love* the aesthetics of mine equally with the refresh. I was strongly considering leasing a G80 Sport next but that refresh has my full attention after testing one while at my dealer for a maintenance interval. - Hyundai has really knocked it out of the park and admittedly I now find myself not even missing any of the luxurious features my Infiniti and Lexus models had standard.
No more catfish grill. Looks great. Great review as always.
Hyundai must be doing something right as they are now the third largest automobile manufacturer in the world. However, in my opinion Hyundai try to hard on exterior styling and change design cues to often, this of course impacts re-sale value as no on wants the "old model".

They are in the market of selling new cars, and this isn’t any different than car makers have always done, they just seem more invested on tweaking year by year.
Looks so much better… amazing video so far Andrea and Zack!
Ey, if Hyundai actually gave you a base awd model to test, it shows their confidence lately. CUDOS to South Korea!
Not even in the market for a midsized sedan but I’m always hitting play on your review videos. Great summary.
I bought a 2024 Sonata SEL about a month ago & I love it! This is my 4th Sonata. My last 3 were very reliable, never broke & I imagine this one will be the same. The shifter is a little weird at first, but now I like it. I do have to be careful not to jump into the car too quickly because I have hit my knee on it a few times & I don't want to break it off. It is smooth, quiet & comfortable. It looks amazing & turns heads. The only complaint I have so far is all the little nooks & crannies in the grill, bumpers & wheels. They are a pain to wash & the car wash doesn't get them clean. It also drips water for days after washing it from the tail light bar, mirrors & doors. If you want it perfectly clean you have to keep a towel with you & keep drying it - I gave up. This car is one of the best cars I've ever owned & I've had a lot.
I love the “sports mode” faces you guys make 😂
Amazing review as usual ! Just a suggestion when you are talking about the base trim try to at least show some pictures of its interior so we have an idea how it looks with small screens and large bezels.. I know these pictures are hard to get but try whenever possible.
It looks way better now, and I'm glad you mentioned what the symbol was on the steering wheel cause I was wondering about that.
Much prefer a stick versus the push button or that steering column mounted thing for shifting. Definitely a deal killer for me.

You get used to either. I had a 2020 Kona EV with the push button shifter, got a 2022 Ioniq 5 EV with the stalk shifter and now my 2024 Tucson hybrid is back to using the push button shifter.
2.5L naturally aspired engine and AWD and in Canada outstandingly well equipped - that is the model to get for just a vehicle that is a great do all. Now they say it is "wonderful" until you drive the N-Line and then - wow this is how it should be BUT - it has apparently not nearly the "real world" mpg. The 8-speed transmission is very well established and durable - domestically Hyundai was taking a beating from people who just do not want to understand how to drive the dual clutch and anyone who frames how to drive them for lots of enjoyment and long life was largely spoken over - so good or bad it removes one of those "moot points" people just will not give up on.
Much better looking. Still not sure about Hyundai but Love your videos! Keep up the great work!
Why is hyundai reducing hybrids in Canada? They dropped the ball on not producing enough PHEV'S for Canada in 2023 and now they are no even offering regular hybrid on this car in Canada….what gives?

Kia / Hyundai and Toyota are all facing huge manufacturing limitations at the moment. People would love to buy Hybrids but lots are empty. At the moment nobody cares about their strategy , and here is comes Honda that sells like hot cakes all their civics and Crv. Why... because Honda has production capacity. Elantra Hybrid...wait time close to 18months. F that...better tell me it's unavailable.
Every single time I see one I think of the line from King of the Hill: I'm going to put YOU, in a Sonata.
Thank you for (always) pulling stats, Research Dept! Ppl keep wanting certain trims/features but, if it doesn't sell, then no dice.
Greetings from oakville Ontario thanks for the presentation I'm glad to see your opinion on the shift by wire on the steering column it takes time but removing it from the console makes more storage
Looks great and reasonably priced. I do prefer the 2.5 non-turbo engine for longevity. Already thinking to get this as a second car.
Elantra Hybrid in Canada is also super nice inside - including the back seat which is huge and well appointed - leather stuff and lots of cool features.
It does look sooo much better. They also integrated that lightship better than expected.
having owned 2 of these in past models they have been solid and reliable ..if a bit under and in the newr one overstyled...do like the awd option...but agree..where is he hybrid??looks great and the value seems to be there for sure..nice review for sure
If I had a choice I’d chose the push button transmission. I have nerve damage in my fingers and being able to just push a button is easier for me. My beautiful 22’ Venza 😉 Zack has the traditional console shifter which is becoming harder for me to squeeze the release lever to change gears. But yes, the push buttons would be my choice 👍🏻
The front of this new Sonata borrows heavily from the late eighties sports car designs from Japan (e.g. the Supra) to my eyes but I do agree that the new design is a vast improvement over the previous model.
I plan on buying a sedan. I like the idea of a trunk rather than a hatchback. I like that I can have a messy trunk and no one can see.

If you are truly looking for a sedan, then look anywhere but Hyundai! Complete garbage engines, if you get 90,000km out of it before needing a new engine you would be lucky! Both my daughters had Hyundai and both engines failed prematurely, junk is putting it mildly!
Hyundai : « Hybrid didn’t sell well » ; if people think the previous model looked odd, the hybrid was worst with that chrome strip in the front bumper and the fuel efficient wheels. As a previous model owner (1.6T model), there are very few reasons to upgrade to this new model. I feel like the new design is as polarizing as the previous design, you either love it or you hate it (I like the fish design, not so much the current light bar everywhere trend). Having said all of this, if you are in the market for a good road and city sedan, the Sonata is an excellent, well equipped and dependable car.

The light bar thing was something I was concerned over when car shopping. I think the new kona looks awful for example. I think they did a really great job implementing it here.
Ya but can you top up the engine coolant? : )
Does it come with a blind view monitor camera???
Looks nice .👍🏻
I'm really not bothered by any of the transmission switches. I had a TLX with the push button and now I have the GV70 with the wheel and you only use them twice a drive and you get used to either in pretty short order.
Base model has a sunroof?
Can you please add information about luggage accommodations when talking about cargo areas of vehicles. I travel a lot and I m looking for a new suv that can accommodate 5 medium suitcases. I went to Galveston Texas recently in a hyundai elantra with 4 adults and was able to store 2 large suitcases and 1 medium in the trunk, which was good, but i need more room.
Very stylish as always.
It took me a minute to get used to the button parking on our BMW X4. I kind of prefer the solid sound of an actual parking brake.
Wish someone could explain the purpose of the fabric pad to the left of the gauge cluster.
This looks a very sleek and stylish car. Seems to be reasonably loaded with tech too 🎉
Is worth more than upcoming 2025 Camry??
The hyundai canada website shows a black headliner for the base model but every video I have seen of the base has a tan/beige headliner. Anyone know why or asked hyundai? For me a tan headliner looks cheap and I would much prefer the black (as mentioned on the website).
Wow, its an improvement in terms of styling but the unibrow front lightbar definitely reminds me of the 80s Mercury Sable 😅
I love Sedans and would own one IF I could find one with good AWD, hybrid and don't have to fall down into it or climb out. Haven't tried the Crown yet, maybe next car.
Do you think Mazda should bring back Mazda6 with the CX90 & CX70 powertrain to compete.
@DeadAir21
28 күн бұрын
It would be nice but they won’t. Everyone is going hybrid for sedans because of emission and fuel efficiency and that inline 6 would not meet the standards and Mazda can’t sell enough to make it worth their time.
I agree - Elantra N - any that were on the road appear to be gone now. You know how racecars they rebuild the engines often after every race right - so how can you use those cars and expect them to be financially wise if you are in that high productivity and income part of you life where the challenge is to reduce things that hit that cashflow and risk mitigation to building a retirement plan.
Oddly enough with them mentioning the legacy, there’s a rumor going around that the Legacy will be discontinued after the 2025 model year.
Did they get rid of the cloth seats on the lower trims?

Love your reviews. I think that sedans popularity would improve drastically if they made them with a hatchback (much more practical). The omission of a hybrid in Canada is a mistake.
I have the 2022, I may be weird but I like the looks fine :-) Bummer you guys do not get the hybrid! I am moving from Dallas to Minneapolis. I see by looking for cars online that MN just has way less hybrids than Dallas. I guess it is not just Canada where the hybrids are not as popular.

I think the crossover/suv models and the increasing Elantra size has cannibalized much of Sonatas sales. It has me wondering if the plan is to merge/replace the Sonata with the Elantra to reduce the number of sedan models. I think this may be a good idea.
FOR price better buy Elantra in Canada. For sedan just drop the Sonata. You have the Genesis G70, Acura TLX type S, Camry awd and hybrid, Accord. And don't worry you have the new Kia K4 !

Looks great but at this point I really think the sedan market is on borrowed time, at least here in North America. People are too in love with crossovers, trucks, and offroad SUVs.
Great review! I do not think it is fair that the base trim in Canada gets heated and ventilated seats with a heating steering wheel! US version only gets heated seats! Why Hyundai??
The ones that would saved the shrinking sedan market are AWD and hybrid. That's what Camry is going to be standard across the board. Thanks to world's most successful carmaker. They already have done it with Corolla and Prius. I only hope Honda, Subaru and Mazda will do the same. Given they have excellent compact and mid-size sedans. As for this refreshed Sonata, as good as the car is. I can't stand Hyundai and Kia's recent styling language.
Its a major improvement on Looks. It went from the worst looking sedan to the best. Not offering the hybrid sucks. The dilemma for me is, I do like the Elantra. I rented one from Hertz, I'm a big and tall guy over 6.4 and Elanta swallowed me up. While I like the looks of the Sonatas more, do I need the larger car?
Love the exterior design but missing hybrid is not a good news. Great show Andrea! ☕️☕️
I personally like Hyundai’s products, especially the ones built over the recent 5-10 years. But the notoriously horrible dealership experience is the deal breaker for me. Period. I need another car for my daughter soon. It’ll be something else for sure.
Looks are much improved but the more powerful engine with Turbo should have come with AWD not front only makes no sense.

No more hybrid in Canada is so sad.
I really dislike the fish look of the previous Sonata. This new one looks so awesome. No polarizing opnions on the appearance any more!!! I used to snub Korean cars and placed Japanese on pedestal but now my preference is reversed. Even after driving a BMW 300 series, I now drive a 2021 Elantra NLine which totally equates to fun driving expereience with good power performance but with much less price than the Bimmers.
The license plates in British Columbia are definitely different than Ontario we have 4 letters and 3 numbers yours are the reverse
I'm seeing more of a Toyota Crown in this new design vs a Lucid Air
Compared to the KIA K5, I think the Sonata comes off 2nd best. No rear seat HVAC or connectivity is a big miss as is no hybrid.
My car in Canada did not come with the heated steering. They said Hyundai is aware of it. But haven’t heard anything from Hyundai yet.

I want the fully loaded base model.😢
They need to turn that 2.5L engine 90 degrees in the engine bay. Then they can let that motor crank max torque any time the driver wants, vs the torque limited transmissions in FWD cars.
Why no spare tire in Canada, Hyundai??? This is a bad trend that makes me look elsewhere. They don’t even have a Canadian part number for spare tires. You have the option to buy a spare tire kit from Modern Spare (from the US) but that’s about 600 USD with shipping. Thanks for the review!
Definitely a more attractive car. Like you I found the previous generation hideous (carp for sure)! I have the 2022 Tucson PHEV like your mothers, is there any chance of a software update to enable wirless Android Auto/Carplay?
Many cars today look better from the back than the front. Maybe it’s the front aero, tech and safety requirements. I’m driving in reverse from now on.

The Ioniq 6 looks like a wind tunnel design and I hate it. Just like the VW I7.
4:49 the brake lights being used as turn signals is unacceptable and needs to be illegal already. How is it 2024 and car companies are still incapable of designing proper taillights with separate running, brake and amber turn signals? It's utterly baffling.
So many beautiful cars...but they had to mess them up with some funny gear shifters (dials, buttons, windshield wipers and what ever it is GMC has or the prius, 😪)......
Super sharpWedge styling is an 1980s nightmare, can no one at hundae think modern
Sorry, I like the old style. All the manufacturers are doing now is trying to make their cars look like they are electric. Boring. FYI.. I got an Elantra N line. Very sporty and is almost as big as the Sonata ( my previous car)
Great review - thank you for making it. As always with Hyundai/Kia - this new design will last all of 15 minutes before they replace it yet again. It must be a nightmare for mechanics and body shops to keep up with their constant design changes.
The reason the hybrid version didn't sell in Canada is because that thing looked atrocious. The new look might be a different story. A missed opportunity from Hyundai. I just don't see how this can compete with the Camry.
Robocop Front end vs Cat fish front end , i will go for robocop.😅😅
Those wheels looks like some old-school spinners
I can't park my Hyundai in the garage per NHTSA cause it might start on fire how about the new sonata
Odd they aren't bringing a hybrid here. The new Camry coming out is only available as a hybrid, with more power, better fuel economy and (IMO) better looks. I still think the Camry will be the one to beat (again).
I prefer the push buttons.
I have an old co-worker who has the old Sonata and I said the same thing it look like a fish it didn't impress me
I like the exterior… a lot. The interior does little-to-nothing for me, maybe its the colour, design or abundance of plastic… I’m not sure. I have seen articles/pictures discussing a ‘shooting-brake’ N-variant… Wow! That would be about the only version (manual?) that would get me into a Hyundai dealership. At this Sonata’s price point (for a midsized 4-door sedan)… I would go for an Accord or Camry… or even the Subaru Legacy. Thanks for the video.

We just passed our 2013 Kia Sportage to our daughter a few months ago, and the engine blew with the crankcase bearing issue that has plagued hundreds of thousands of Kias and Hyundais. Why even try to save the sedan market, what they should focus on is saving the coupe market
The appeal for this car will be dropping the catfish face. The Sonata looks so much better in every way.
The shifter on steering column is better. Not only because it saves space for other things. But on my Tucson, I’ve had my dog walk on the button while driving throwing it from d to n and a loss of power. Before you scold me, he was tied on a leash to the back seats but he ate through!
I still think the 2011 to 2014 Sonatas are the best looking and the 2.4 had up to 200 HP in the Sport . You just needed to change oil frequently and check its level . Something that is not normal for your average Hyundai owner .
