2024 Lexus IS 300 review // V6 still good value?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2024 lexus Is 300 AWD compact, luxury sedan. The Lexus IS 300 AWD model has a 3.5L V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission, 260 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque, Premium fuel is required. In Canada, the turbocharged 2L 4-cylinder RWD model with 241 horsepower is gone for 2024 but it is still available in the US.
The Lexus IS 300 has an athletic look with a low, wide stance, bold front fascia and a muscular silhouette. It has 5.5” of ground clearance with a drag coefficient of 0.29. It comes standard with LED headlamps, automatic high beam, 18” wheels and a temporary spare tire. We are driving the F Sport 3 model with premium triple beam LED headlamps, an integrated rear spoiler, 19” F Sport wheels and larger diameter tires.
The Lexus IS 300 comes standard with an 8” touchscreen, available 10.3”, wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto, 8-way power front seats, NuLuxe upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, moonroof and Lexus Safety System+ 2.5.
Unfortunately, the glitchy trackpad is still in the IS but at least the screen is a touchscreen, so you don’t have to exclusively use the trackpad. The cabin is comfortable and driver focused with everything at your fingertips. The IS offers some great front row legroom but does fall short in second row legroom and cargo space compared to some of its competitors.
There’s a lot of value in the Lexus IS 300, in Canada, the AWD model starts at $50,582 CAD,
F Sport design, $52,032 CAD , Luxury $54,532 CAD, F Sport 2 $57,732 CAD, Ultra Luxury $59,182 CAD and our F Sport 3 test model $60,882 CAD.
In the US, the Lexus IS RWD model starts at $41,235 USD, AWD $43,235 USD, RWD F Sport design $43,055 USD, AWD F Sport design $45,095 USD, F Sport RWD $44,305 USD and F Sport AWD $46,345 USD.
The official fuel economy numbers are 12.2L/100 km, 19 MPG city and 9L/100 km, 26 MPG highway. We have been getting better than this 8.7L/100 km, 27 MPG.

I own a 2014 IS350. It's a great all-around car... comfortable, reasonably-fun to drive, great reliability, great looks, best seats I've had in a car... I even like my mouse-like controller for the infotainment system. It's easier and quicker to navigate than trying to select stuff on our new NX's huge touchscreen. The updated IS tested here has even better styling outside and a high quality interior.

Nothing beats that 3.5L V6. So smooth, quick, quiet. It’s used in a lot of Toyotas and Lexuses. When you hate the engine in your car, suddenly tech and fancy options don’t matter anymore.

Yes, the powertrain is the heart and soul of a car. The 3.4 liter V6 in my '01 4Runner, while not super-powerful, is still smooth, quiet, and trouble-free. A poorly-designed or programmed automatic transmission can really spoil the feeling (as noted, a newer design with more gears isn't necessarily better than the well-designed 6-speed auto in this Lexus).

After 5 months of testing and researching all luxury brands, I landed on the IS350. The CD player was almost a deal breaker. The ultimate reason this car won, was that it is bar none the most comfortable seat of them all. It embraces you as you sit down, and everything is where it should be. It lacks refined elegance, but makes up for it with a drivers embrace. Also the most reliable, easy to maintain, longest lasting car of them all. Another great thing is I saved $15-$20000 on this car from the others I was interested in, but that didn’t even play into my decision. Make you sure give it a spin before you take it off your list! Have fun!

From what I've read, the power difference is only noticeable in the higher RPMs, due to them being naturally aspirated. I've even read same/similar 0-60 times between them. Andrea is correct in saying the price difference is steep in Canada, and considering the above, not worth it for the 350. Buy used though, they hold their value like crazy and a brand new 300 is 60k CAD. When you're in that price range you have to start considering a lot of other options so I can see why people then start complaining about the car being dated. I still love its old school appeal but not for the price they're charging new. Also bear in mind, Lexus is stolen like candy from a baby. Their anti theft is garbage and insurance rates reflect that.

Zack, I think my S60, built in S. Carolina, is a competitor here. Your 2019 S60 review was quite complimentary. And I can say it has aged well. My 2023 Recharge now has 13,000 miles. The 455HP, is plenty of fun but as you alluded to in 2019, a great daily driver, especially with orthopedically designed seats. Lifetime fuel consumption of 101 mpg compares to my last BMW 2L ICE at 29.7. I do agree with your appreciation for natural aspiration, but my 143HP motor immediately masks any turbo lag.

The infotainment area is definitely long overdie for an uodate, however, as mentioned, once the touchpad is pretty straightforward once you get it all set up the way you want it. The optional touchscreen is nice for people who prefer that or for the passenger. My brother owns a 2022 IS 300 AWD F-Sport 2 in the same Iridium colour, and he loves it. He was cross shipping between the S3, WRX, TLX, and the IS. The 'Snow Mode' is enogh to deal with our West Coast winters, and the 2GR-FKS is tried and trued. Plus, it can be tuned to IS 350 performance with a quick reprogram. The sliding LFA inspired gauge is very cool. The 6-speed is plenty quick for daily driving with the occasional highway pulls or back road detours. I've got a 2024 NX 350, and tech is way ahead of the IS. The drawback, essentially EVERYTHING is within the touchscreen. "Early Adopters" of the new NX and RX did have issues where if the infotainment screen bugs out, the car either doesn't start or is stuck in limp mode. The NA V6 engine, the exterior look, and the wide and sleek design of the IS, physically knobs and switches, the IS is still a very nice vehicle.

As you said, it is built like cars used to be built. I really like it for that. I have been on the fence trying to decide between the 350/300, and your comments about the 6-speed calibration really stuck with me. I also doubt most people will notice the "weaker" tuning of the 300 vs the 350 as most of the extra power comes from really pushing the engine. Thanks for your honest review.

@@alb12345672Are you just not understanding what I just said? They didn’t update the car. It was old that is why it is gone. The Germans still sell in good numbers in the segment. The weak die off first in a tough segment and that would be Lexus’ GS. They did nothing to the car for almost 10 years. That’s why it’s gone. Any car can be reliable if you maintain it. Ask any older European car owner. Question is how much do you want to spend doing it. The ES sells just fine because they update it.

I bought a new 2016 Lexus IS350 F Sport 3 when I graduated university. It doesn't compete the Germans in tech and raw specs but it is so damn reliable and cheap to own (relatively speaking). Had such a good experience with the IS that I bought a RX for my fiance when she needed to upgrade, and got bought a RC F as a summer car. I still daily the IS. If you plan to own, I'd only consider lexus in this segment. If you're gonna lease, you don't care about reliability and longevity so go BMW or Mercedes. The only car that I'd consider replacing my IS350 with is an Audi S7, but that'll have to wait when the IS' wheels fall off and I'm in a better financial position to justify that upgrade.
