    Well, that just tells how much dedication and hardwork they put into ballet and overstretching... similarly to elite runners who consistantly train running with weights strapping/pulling on them or behind. Besides, these skaters/dancers started when they were little baby that their bodies and bones were easy to be "malleable".

    The Hyperextened Biellmanns always give me heartattacks, the flexibility and strength you need for those...incredible. Was blown away by it firstly by Julia. I know we are in a quad frenzy and wierd jump frenzy when judges have odd judging (ignore their own rules/ GOE bullets)...spins should not be overlooked and are my favourite parts of all skaters programs. So beautiful and you really can be original with them. I actually wished they got rewarded more spins...but meh just my opinion

    ISU needs to bring back the spirals, so artistic and aesthetically pleasing. They always talk about increasing the emphasis on artistry. This is a perfect way to start. Nowadays choreography sequences are full of filler moves without any emotion or artisty.

    I love a good spiral sequence, but there’s also a lot of pretty bad spiral sequences that I definitely don’t miss. I definitely agree that I wish choreo sequences actually had to have more choreography haha. Seems like people just do a single spread eagle and call it a choreo sequence

    @@user-fk4by8vz4u Yeah, Eteri programs are all the same. If you take away the costume and music change, you probably couldn't tell one apart from the other. The only place they might deviate a little from the standard is those of them that have extra flexibility. That's IT. And even then there's a lot of repetitiveness. For example if i see one more leg kick from Valieva I think i am going to throw up.

  • @comment6864

    @comment6864

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@fazdoll The bielman? That's nothing new, she does it with her leg straight up, that's all. Hyperextension. That's a physical gift that she has, it's not really a skill. She does all the same stuff pretty much that everyone else does, it's just that her hyperflexibility makes them look different. But that doesn't impress me very much, and i think it's a little overused by her choreographers. It's like ok, we understand, she can lift her leg not just really high like they all do, but really really really high. Ok. Now what? Flexibility to a great degree is a genetic physical attribute. I remember when i was a kid there were certain girls that had a perfect split without even trying much. Without even being into gymnastics or ballet or anything like that. Little girls even kind of compete over that kind of stuff. I personally don't consider that a crucially important thing in skating. I would say all of them have enough flexibility. What matters how they use each individual talent to make an integral and beautiful part of the whole performance. Viewers pick up on subtleties, you know. We can pick up right away that something is being overused.

  • @walterwyte01

    @walterwyte01

    Cam was saying she'd spent much time in rhythmic gymnastics before joining figure skating, that's probably where her flexibility was enhanced. So it's not quite fair to say she owns her extension only to her genes.

    Thank you for including Lucinda Ruh! I believe she is the best spinner in all of figure skating. Her centering was perfect and she showed wonderful innovation. You could see she was transported to another place when she spun. Unfortunately, because she didn’t do the kinds of jumps other skaters did, she never received the marks and acclaim she truly deserved, but I very much enjoyed watching all of her routines. She always seemed to be a genuinely humble and lovely person, too.

    Yes. I saw Lucinda Ruh live at the 1996 world championships in Edmonton. (She kindly signed my program, too.) But when she took to the ice in practice sessions and began to spin (often at the end after a frustrating series of tortured jumps), all the other skaters and coaches would stop to watch her! All eyes were glued to her. Her spinning was so respected by all. She was that incredible. One of her spins was worth more than a quad these days. No one could do what she did with her absolutely perfect centering, speed, incredible duration and innovation. I could watch her all day doing her spins - even more than all the jumping beans out there. Spins are sorely underrated. They are much harder for most people to do than jumps.

    You should take a look at the Canadian skater Shawn Sawyer. He doesn't compete anymore but he had some crazy flexibility. He used to a variation of the Y Spiral, had a crazy high regular spiral, could do the Biellman, and did something similar to the Candlestick spin where he would start in a sit spin, grab the toe of his free leg and raise it up into a hyperextended position above his head. He also did backflips and cartwheels on the ice sometimes in his show/exhibition programs. I really like the "Pearl" spin and I really like the "Adelina" camel spin especially the one at the 3:00 mark.

    @@jrewing2383 she would have been a beautiful bronze but since it happened in Sochi, a russian girl has to win. Yulia messed up her program, so it was given to Adelina. The gold medal pretty much crushed her career into pieces because she couldn’t live up to the standards of the Olympic Champion. In the end, she was used by the ISU and gets thrown out right afterwards. Shame on ISU for wasting a beautiful skater.

    The spin at 7:12 gives the impression that the skater has lost a leg or something. There certainly are a lot of innovative spins. The Biellmann spin is probably the most elegant looking spin. One of the least elegant looking spins used in competition is the one that Sasha Coen started -- as a trend.
