    @@lisakwaterski6707 yes, the Bolero routine was exceptional. Torvill and Dean were truly amazing as an ice dancing pair. They basically put the sport on the map, as it were. It’s a shame that they (the powers that be) chose to ban the lying down on the ice move completely. I think it was very effective as an ending. But i also agree it got overused. I guess I’ll just have to go watch T&D again to get my fix! LOL

    So what is the point? Regarding Surya’s backflip, she had tremendous experience doing so as a gymnast. She’s incredibly strong and skilled that she didn’t even fall during her backflip on the ice. She’s the only skater of her generation to do so, since with the men that is already slated to be overrated so it was extremely rare to see her land that backflip on one leg while Rory Flack landed it with the typical both feet, though not in competition like Surya did.

    What's even more impressive is WHY Surya Bonaly did the backflip even though it was banned in competition. She has ruptured her achilles tendon the season prior and suffered permanent damage from it. She was unable to perfectly execute some of the 'legal' moves that she planned in her routine, like the triple lutzes everyone had become obsessed with at the time, so she decided to pop in a one-legged backflip instead. She lost out on medaling, but she gained more worldwide fans than ever and became one of the most talked-about athletes of the Olympics that year.

    Surya was indeed judged unfairly for her routines and she was judged for her looks , not what they wanted to represent , the skating princess look....All the whining Tonya Harding did was bullshit, the only person that ruined it for Tonya was Tonya. Surya was not judged fairly ever and she laid down some amazing performances with powerful jumps ( when jumps were everything) and still lost to a skater that fell on a same jump .

  • @shimmeringfairydust3275

    @shimmeringfairydust3275

    4 жыл бұрын

    Aspen Robinson Surya was robbed in the 1993 World’s. Sure, Oksana was as graceful as a swan, but she two footed several jumps and her spins were sloppy. Surya’s jumps were terrific, cleanly landed, and her spins remarkable. Likewise, Nancy Kerrigan was unfairly denied the gold at the 1994 Olympics in favor of the charming Baiul. Again, Baiul’s jumps were so unimpressive-two footed and she almost fell on one. Her spins were slow and traveled. She did a very simple combination at the end. Kerrigan, on the other hand, did several difficult combinations, all her jumps were clean and her spins difficult and centered. The judges marked Baiul way too high on technical - almost identical to Kerrigan’s - which was utterly ridiculous. That’s how Baiul won. Mary Scotfold, Kerrigan’s choreographer, said she felt the judges penalized Kerrigan for the Nancy-Tonya scandal - it “sullied the sport.” Which was utterly insane - Kerrigan had NOTHING to do with that - it was all Harding & her gang of hoodlums.

    I was one of just two people in my country during my period of skating who could do a backflip at the time. I once did one at a major competition during the 6 minute warmup (the official warmup right before you compete your program) to show off for the ladies and have a bit of fun and initially, people thought it was funny. After I won the gold medal, however, the coaches of my competitors lobbied the judges and decision makers to have me disqualified and have my medal stripped from me for performing an illegal manoeuvre during competition. The judges got out the rule books and after a few hours of discussions came back and said they couldn’t find any rule stating that banned manoeuvres could not be performed during the official 6 minute warm up, so my 1st place position stood. Awesome memories.

In exchange, we now get the skaters sinking down on the ice in relied when they realized that they managed a close to flawless performance. That's even more dramatic, but more fun to watch.

They did so many amazing moves I’d never seen in the Olympics (like twirling the girl by her leg!) They used props and put on a fantastic show, and were allowed to be creative. They often use the headbanger in Dancing on Ice on UK TV and sometimes there seems to be a push to be the first celebrity to include it in a routine. It's bad enough when it's a male pro-skater and a celebrity partner, but when it's a male celebrity holding a female pro skater it's terrifying. I'm sure there are plenty of viewers who love it, but I hate it.

    skate blades are dull enough so if you pressed your finger against it, it wont cut you, the only time it would is if you are pushing and going at a certain speed. ice is really easy to mark so thats why you don't need much force to create a trail, you see when they do the back flip the ice breaks a bit, it just shows how delicate it is. human skin on the other hand isn't, when you cut a whole lettuce or anything but take lettuce for example, you apply force to the top of the knife to cut it in half, this doesn't cut you because the blade isn't sharp on the top side and your skin is rough enough to endure it.

    @ It is not a "stupid" rule to disallow laying down on the ice, it's made for the skaters own safety. I have quite a bit of experience in figure skating and I know how fast you may have to act at times. Someone could bleed out in thirty seconds, that's not a whole load of time. *Some* people may think that that is a part of the show. You also talked about that "figure skating is an art form", while it is, were talking about competitive skating, not show skating. You see, competitive skating is about showing skill, not who can lay on the ice the coolest way. There is a difference; show skating =/= competitive skating.

  • 4 жыл бұрын

    @@jonaxoez I told you, it is impossible to mistake someone that fells and someone that acts, especialy on ice.The body becomes very tense when a person hit the ice and move like a worm because of the pain, if the person fell on the head his/her body will become soft and the muscles will be totaly relaxed, like someone who died. When you ''fall'' dramaticaly on the ice you don't hit the ice and you slowly lay down your head. The only way it can be dangerous to fall on the ice is if it is an accident, in that case it is just too obvious and there will be no mistaking nor delay.

One of the rules about learning to do a back flip is that if you don't get it quickly without landing on your head many times. You probably should stop trying to do it because, you will hurt yourself very badly. This goes for any acrobatic sport. If you get injured, you don't make it very far or last that long.
