Drama on ice: a love story of beautiful skaters Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergey Grinkov

The story of their love was bright and touching, but very short.⠀
Beautiful young and talented - Sergey Grinkov and Ekaterina Gordeeva were the real stars of figure skating in the 80-90s. They managed to become Olympic champions twice, three times European champions and four time world champions in pair figure skating.
3 years before the tragedy, Sergey and Ekaterina got married and had a girl, whom they named Dasha. But in one moment everything changed. Right on the ice during training, Sergey's heart stopped...

RIP, however just because a loving couple died together, doesn't make them soulmates. I actually don't believe in soulmates, we all were born alone, and everyone of us is a whole being. The belief of soulmates implies that we as a human being is not whole unless we find our soulmates, which is so wrong in my opinion. I've taken care of many elderly people, few were lucky enough to have their partner in their 90s. But the fact is, no matter how in l ok be they were or how long their relationship was, once a partner became disable, having to chronic illness, especially the one that renders them from communicating properly, or if one dies, most of the time you will find the surviving partner don't take that long to move on. Easy to say a couple are soulmates when they are young or healthy, how about when they are older or fell ill? Is it really romantic love or empathy/sympathy? Or friendship? Love is rarely eternal or unconditional, and more common in parents-children relationship. Of course this is only my opinion.

I can’t imagine. It’s just another reminder to hug ur loved ones and tell them how much u love them all. And if there are some u haven’t talked to or have an argument with them, let it go, or let them know u might be upset and hurt but the love is and always will be there. As someone who has lost a loved one young and suddenly, a couple times, don’t let time disappear.

My father died also from sudden death when he was only 29 years old and I was 5. My mother was also 28. She decided never to remarry or to have a man in her life. From that day till now we are fighters and everything we did and we have we made with our hands. She is the bravest woman I know. Because of the stress and hard work she got Ulcerative colitis that turned into Chrons disease, she had dozens of operations and now she is 40kg heavy, and she must go every second or third mont in onother city's hospital for 3-4 weeks so she can have parenterental nutrition because she doesn't have bowels and she needs to to this to the rest of her life. Together we are fighting our battles and I am still the biggesr empath I know. And I am still child in my soul... I guess the strongest ones are the ones who needed to grow up early but they still kept the child within... I dont know why i felt the need to share this... ...I have my mother eyes and my father smile, on my face they are still together ❤️.

Sergey was her true soul mate. Sadly it is few and far between that man and wife are so closely connected as they truly have become one. When one is so blessed to have married their soul mate and then has to face their demise and exit from that oneness it's as if life is over for the spouse. How does the remaining spouse contend with everyday life? Because you're just part of what once was strength and peace and that oneness, you're completely lost and you must reinvent yourself. It's the hardest task human faces except perhaps loosing a dearly beloved child of your own.

They were the most gorgeous couple for me in the ice skating pairs. Look at those visuals and of course the talent! They were so compatible in the ice skating rink, she was petite but passionate and he was tall but very delicate, they really moved as one. Their life together was almost perfect but cut short by the tragedy. It's like a movie with a very sad ending. I can't imagine the pain, to live life without the person you love the most...losing him suddenly at such young age with no proper goodbyes. I really hope Katya is happy even though life has never been the same without Sergei. It's been 27 years, to think Daria is 30 now.... older than Sergei can be :( It was so long already.

I for one, so remember their love story. I was in my teens then. I'm 46 years old and for me, it's so disheartening to know that you've lost that one person that made such a difference in your life. When Sergei passed away, I prayed often that she would find the strength to go on and I was happy that she did. That performance, in dedication, was well thought out and beautiful. There was no better way for it to be done than the way that she did it. And I'm certain that Sergei loved every minute of it. And he is smiling down on her. I still pray that even after many years of his death that she will continue to live life and live it well. And enjoy it more through the eyes of her daughters and up coming grandchildren.

Dear Katia, I want to thank you for sharing your life with all of us. Because of your life story the rest of us got to see true love. I have my own life story which partly involves you. I was also a skater but never got the chance to realize my dream. I went on to have a family. My children (5 out of 6 became competitive roller skaters. They were all pretty good, but the one I want to tell you about is my youngest son Joe. He, like you and Sergei had pure hearts. He, like Sergei went home early. Where you come in was that I just happened upon a video of you two skating about a year before we lost our son. I remembered when Sergei passed because I still have a magazine with you and your daughter on the cover. As I started watching more and more of these videos I could see the pure love between the two of you. I also saw your courage and strength to go on without him. Little did I know that I was going to have to be strong too. Now I will tell you a little about Joseph. Joe had a good life but not without struggle. He was born with Down Syndrome. He had open heart surgery at 4 months old. Because of a childhood vaccine he lost his ability to talk. He also became autistic for 3 years. By 6 years of age he was back on track. He started to skate when he was 8 years old. By time he was 13 he had spent many hours at the rink. He would mimic his older brother and sister at their practices. He continued to skate til his 20th birthday. His favorite thing to do was skating. He went every Saturday night. His 20th birthday was on a Friday, so we took him out to dinner (another one of his favorite things to do) and then to the skating rink for a surprise birthday party. He was in his element and oh so happy. Everyone could see how excited he was. It was a great time. Joe being the youngest lived at home with us and with his older brother Dave. The next day we were all working on cutting and stacking wood. Joe was a good worker. That went on for a few hours than we all got tired. My son Dave and I went in the house to rest and my husband went out to the garage to work on a car. Joe had a go cart and wanted to ride. His Dad told him bring it over to the garage and I will fill your tire with air. He told him you can ride for a little while but don't leave the property. In just a short time he was called home to be with our Lord. Like Sergei he did not suffer. I then realized why I had been watching you for a year. I was being prepared. This was a loss like I've never had before. This was a child that was always with us. He was the center of our world. We felt so lost without him. He was one special soul and I had to privilege to be his mother. I know he is safe and happy. It has not been easy but watching you has made me strong. Thank you.
