Roller Skaters Try To Keep Up With Figure Skaters | SELF
Спорт
We challenged a group of roller skaters to swap wheels for blades and try figure skating for the first time alongside some pros. Will our roller skaters be able to keep up on the ice or will the differences be too much to overcome?

Wheel Skating helps Cold Skating but NOT Vice Versa… Example: Skateboarding helps Snowboarding NOT vice versa RollerBlading helps Ice skating ⛸️ not as much vice versa
Andre’s twizzles tho!!! 😮 Twizzles are not a beginner move, and he did them with confidence. I wonder if quad roller skaters do twizzles? Seems impossible! Overall I think this was a great concept. Roller skating (for me) is SO much more difficult than ice because the wheels feel clunky and awkward. I also love my toe picks, and the freedom that blades provide. I would really like to see the reverse of this video, where figure skaters try quad roller skates ❤

There is artistic roller skating who is the same as ice figure skating but on quad skates, and yes they do twizzles too. it's a common sport if not even more popular than ice figure skating in certain European countries and Latin America, as far it's hot and/or the maintenance of a ice rink is too expensive.

I competed in the Artistic Roller Skating Association & had only 2 years of coaching, 8 skating competitions, won all 1st place except placing 3rd in only one. Skated in Pairs as well. My coach said he had never had a skater out perform him in such a short period of time. Sadly, I couldn't continue with a new coach. I was working on quads in that short time as well. That was many many years ago. The Artistic Roller Association did everything to get Artistic Roller Skating into the the Olympics many times but were sadly turned away & I do not ever see it becoming a sport they will ever consider. I did have plans to turn to Ice. Unfortunately, life had to take me in a different direction. Had I had the chance, I know I would've made Gold; I was 100 % all in & determined, In skating, there is never such a phrase as "I can't!' You fall, get up & do it again & again & keep hitting EVERY move!~ Roller skating is much, more difficult artistically; you're dealing with more weight of the skates with a toe pick & 8 wheels/ different wheels for wood or plastic floors. I WISH ALL THOSE WHO ARE STILL ARTISTICALLY ROLLER SKATING THE BEST OF LUCK !!

This is what I wanna see. I’m better at rollerblading but I do enjoy zooming around the ice when I have the time. I’ve skated on quads but I prefer inlines. I wish you picked a rollerblader to see the difference in blades.
@Cloudy4Days
Жыл бұрын
As someone who skates on ice and with quads, but used more inlines as a kid, I feel like quads and ice skates are the most similar to each other (unless you get the off-ice inlines). Like, I can do a lot of stuff in quads and on ice, but if I put inlines on I just get completely confused

@@Cloudy4Days I am fairly competent on the inlines. I can do backwards crossovers like an ice skater in a parking lot. On quads I feel uneasy, but I can at least go around a rink. However, on ice skates I can barely move forward, they feel so foreign despite 30 years of inline skating. Granted every time I've tried has been in rental skates, so that's probably not helping.

@@richskater Definitely not helping you those rentals maybe, check how sharp they are next time, moving forwards is almost the same exact movement as in-lines or quads but if there is no edge on your ive skates it'll be like trying to skate with plates strapped to your feet. Rentals are sharpened like, never. I've once elected to use my skates that was literally having a blade fall off rather than rentals because the wiggly blade was easier to skate with
These guys are incredible!! I started competition figure skating as an adult, at 22, with no experience and it has taken me YEARS to learn a one-foot spin and these guys did it in RENTALS!? Insane
I do both figure skating (adult silver) and roller so this was for sure a treat to watch! I can understand how roller skaters aren’t used to having upright posture or the use of arms not looking down deeper knee bend etc.. I myself had a hard time with this transition..😅 Right off the bat the one guy who got hurt I instantly thought the top hooks of his skates were too loose for ice 😳 I understand in jam skating it’s normal to have them loose at the top or not even tied at all but with ice I fell as though you need that firm support. The other guy who did the twizzles in his routine- that was REALLY impressive!! The girl had really nice flow and artistry and a great waltz jump. I believe with a better boot and blade combo things would have been easier for all three of them 😅 Other than that for not having any artistic experience and the two guys in rentals this was impressive for day one!

Glad to see that someone else had noticed that the top couple of inches of his boots were extremely loose which was making it harder for him to execute the skills and the strings got looser with each skill they learned. Thankfully it wasn't a serious injury and healed quickly.

De’Lorean’s final program was so good! The waltz was lovely and the connecting steps so graceful! And Andre doing freaking twizzles his first time on the ice is both impressive and infuriating cause I’ve been working on them for months and can only get two twizzles at best 😭😭😭
Would love to see something with roller derby players, maybe derby players trying hockey and vice versa?

Wish they had a world champion figure roller skater try these. There are many different types of roller skaters and different levels, even professional level. Very fun to watch and such great personalities.
Ice skating is MUCH harder than roller skating because you’re trying to balance on a thin metal blade and not four wheels. I think these guys did amazing!!
i thought it was gonna be artistic/competitive roller skating but instead it is jam roller skating.. hopefully there will be a video with competitives since it has basically all the same figures and jumps and such and it would be really great to see how much the difference in medium influence the preparation and attitude of athletes

No way, I was just wishing you had a roller skater/figure skater video and here it is 😍
The tall guy Lionel was so natural on skates I have hard time to believe he's not done this before.
I watched both videos and I gotta say each group was good teachers and great students. Humble and skilled. It seems like there's a few common skills but the real thing that translates is confidence and general athleticism as well as openness and willingness to learn something new. They all did a great job.
Summer-roller skates; winter-ice skating. These matchups are terrific to watch and really show the differences in each sport wonderfully.
Andre is a natural talent! Awesome effort and fun to watch!
De'Lorean's smile was just so radiating and contagious :)
That they could do any of that is rental skates is pretty impressive. Their feet probably hurt a lot afterwards, though.
This episode made me smile so many times with excitement for the skaters I already lost count and I'm only halfway through watching it so far! Great coaches and athletes, wonderful series and congratulations to all involved in making this happen!

Dude, I have so much respect and admiration for roller skaters and ice skaters. I used to roller skate and ice skate, it was easy just skating around but doing all these cool tricks and spins? I could never.
Great video! Just to mention that figure skating on roller skate also exists it's called artistic roller skating
Both videos were great! And, everyone did a great job picking up each other’s sport.
Tara Lapinski started as a roller skater so not that shocked that they took to it well
Love how they switched the roles and I really like these videos, they make me wanna try figure skating too. Also just an idea, could you do roller blading professionals with figure skating or roller skaters?
Incredible video! The twizzle looks so much like snapping in rollerskating, so its nice to see that came natural to Andre
Everyone did so amazing! I thought it was going to be much harder for the roller skaters to get on the ice...and they jumped! I love how they did the ice skaters on roller skates video. I hope there are follow ups
So surprised that it came so naturally to all of them! Also hope the rolled ankle feels better!!
While the idea behind the video is really fun, I am not surprise at all that Lionel got hurt. These moves are not for beginner ice skaters, much more preparation and lessons normally go before these. Ice skating should always be taken in little by little and with the proper precaution. The ice can be dangerous. Still, I think the roller skaters did pretty great! :)
Wow!! I think they all did amazing. Well done!
Omg the balance alone is what always gets me. I always thought that if you can do one you can do the other. But the balance is really totally different. I watched the second half as well and you all did a great job. Question, are inline skates the best of both world? Would love to see this competition with you all and inline skaters.
This series deserves more attention. Theyre interesting!

i am a figure skater. i find roller skating to be sooo scary! being on a hard surface like cement seems terrifying, i can do triple jumps on ice, but i'm not brave enough to do a spin in roller skates😆 i have a lot of respect for roller skaters. definitely harder falls when you can't slide
They did so good. My fear of falling has stopped me in the past and I definitely want to get back out there with a teacher
Oh wow DeLorean really nailed it she's good fantastic awesome
Definitely jam skaters, but it was a neat video. I've been doing artistic roller for quite a few years and the similarities between quads and ice is ridiculous. Most would say ice is comparable to inlines, but that's not the case. Your edges, jumps, how you turn, and how you stop are almost identical. Quads are definitely heavier! Great vid. Looking forward to the reverse.
Nice. Do more videos with every sport that exists. It's nice to see the encouragement and the learning.
it looked like all the figure skaters got cute custom matching roller skates last video, these guys deserve their own custom ice skates too!
Great content here ! It’s fun stepping out your comfort zone. Need like an artistic skater and a jam skater. That’ll be interesting !!!
So fun to watch you guys! Roller skaters unite!
These guys are making me itch to get back on skates of any kind!
This is fascinating to watch because I did this as I taught myself how to do the various skills I saw figure skaters doing whenever we watched the different competitions and shows that aired on network TV before cable and online service existed. I could roller skate in our basement and I could ice skate on the lake in our neighborhood for ,3-4 months depending on how cold it got and how thick the ice got. It had to be around 20 inches before they would let us skate or play hockey and it was checked daily. We rarely got to go to the one ice skating rink and that was usually with a church group or girl scouts.
smart of them to put them in hockey boot figure skates. I always use hockey boot figure skates cause they're so much more comfortable but I can imagine for roller skaters it's so much better
Very cool that both athletes challenged each in their sport.
This was so much fun to watch and makes me want to get back on the ice and wheels!
This is very off topic but i am in love with De’Loreans Nezuko jackets its so cool
It would be cool to see the artistic roller skater like the ones who do the doubles and triples and the camel spins the same way we do ours. But these roller skates did great
Glad this segment is back!
Aw Lionel did such a great job, I’m sorry he got injured
i love this series so much
Loooolll the teacher is amazing and funny saying “ik” when she said you make me feel like a really good teacher
The way Lionel was standing at 13:08 told me he was NOT steady in those skates.. looks like there was absolutely zero ankle support so it's no wonder he rolled it
Really enjoyed that. Fab! 🤩

I only roller skated a few times before taking ice skating lessons at the age of ten. However, the rink closed after two months, so my grandpa bought me roller skates and told me to practice on those until my grandma could find another ice rink with affordable lessons. Funny thing is getting back into ice skating I was able to do some things on quad skates if I paid attention to the weight of the wheels.
