I think she is right as well, a transparent prose helps with processing all the rest of the crazy things on his books. XD with dozens of names, countries, magics, world building, etc, if the prose was overly complex it would just be too difficult to read.

Honestly as far as Vin is concerned I've never found her to be annoying or unlikable. I think the life she lived up until meeting Kelsier would leave anyone damaged in some way. The fact that she was able to push on and still maintain any goodness at all is admirable as hell.

I don't know how unpopular this is but Marsh is my favorite character in the series. He's a cool guy at the beginning but of course the key feature of him is that he becomes an inquisitor. At the end of book 1 you start thinking about what will happen to him and then you watch him become corrupted and start killing people. Then in book 3 you discover that he has an internal battle where he wants to kill himself but he's being controlled by Ruin so he can't. He's Mistborn's version of Gollum. He's such a tragic character. Era 2 spoilers ahead After I finished Era 1 I was very curious what would happen to Marsh and I read Alloy of Law recently and at the end you find out he's still alive! I was so excited reading that

Here's mine: Sanderson is bad at writing atmosphere. If you told me "here's a book set in a world where ash regularly falls from the sky, and the nights are shrouded in supernatural mist" I would think "wow, that sounds so atmospheric!" but I read the entire trilogy and never once felt fully immersed in the world.

I do think that Kelsier is slightly overrated though. I never have understood the hype around him. Book 1 is my favorite, but that's just because I have a lot nostalgia wrapped around it. Let's just say there were lots of late nights while reading it. 😂 I think the magic is awesome. I love how it's more science than magic, but I love science. 😅 I liked how I always understood the magic and knew what was happening. Anyways, happy reading! There's always another secret!

it's literally with every character in the series. Sanderson just repeats the same info literally every other chapter. I get it at the beginning of 2nd and 3rd books because some people might take a break between reading next installment in the series, but when you're halfway through and vin is like OMG MY CRAZY MOTHER GAVE ME THAT EARRING and sazed is like OMG RELIGION BAD NO FAITH I WAS A MAN OF FAITH, and elend is like OMG I USED TO RELY ON BOOKS BUT NOW I'M A BAD RULER :( it gets tiresome.

My take on Mistborn? It is, for me, and okay series, nothing overly special. I enjoyed it, but it's not a series I have a great desire to reread any time soon. I didn't care for its magic system. It felt artificial to me, like something grafted on from a D&D session. This almost stopped me from reading Stormlight Archive. Thankfully, I eventually gave it a try. Yes, its magic system is recognizably Sanderson, with obvious Mistborn roots. Yet here I find it 'organic' to its world. A major improvement, imo.

  • @Rhendali

Genuinely curious as to how the magic system is “recognizably Sanderson.” I’m not super entrenched in the Cosmere despite having read 1st Gen of Mistborn (which, as a a trilogy, I give 3/5), Secret History (2/5), Warbreaker (1/5), Elantris (4/5), Dawnshard (2/5), and Stormlight (4/5). *edited to add* I felt that all the magic systems were extremely varied; some good (Mistborn & Stormlight), some bad (Elantris & Warbreaker).

I can see why people didn’t like book two, especially since there was a massive tonal shift between the first and second books, but it was my favorite in the series! I liked the political element and loved TenSoon and the kandra element. I struggled with book three, especially since I didn’t particularly love Spook or the ending, but I have to appreciate how well Sanderson tied things together. The ending was the opposite of a cop out! He could’ve gone for a way easier/neater/happier ending.

Hey, Elliot. I have recently read Mistborn. I liked it, but honestly I do agree that it can be boring sometimes. Even though I find it quite fast-paced. But The Walking Chaos is also fast-paced and I found it really boring (sorry, I know you liked it😅). Kinda spoilers next) I think my favorite book was definitely the last one with the additional perspective from Sazed from the future. And also the story line of the Citizen was pretty interesting as well. The second book was probably the least favorite to me because of this reason mostly: the death of some characters was so glossed over. I really liked Clubs and then Sanderson did me so dirty🥲 Thank you for your videos, they are always so interesting and unique)))

I read only the first one. The core story is enjoyable, and the magic system is cool, but there is nothing else. I can live with all shortcomings, but there is one giant thing that I couldn't get over. The book is at least 40% fluff and waffle. I have concluded that BS is not for me despite liking the book on the whole. It is just not worth the effort. P.S: I did like VIn. She is actually the only one I cared about. I read Mistborn this year, and I'd say that The Final Empire is probably my favorite book? I loved every single chapter from the prologue, and it's one of the few books that made me cry. I loved the rest of the series too, but (and here there might be spoilers) I liked The Well of Ascension less than the others, mainly for the whole imposter trope, that I'm not a fan of. Being a non-native English speaker, I loved Brandon's writing because it's accessible, and I didn't feel missing out on anything by reading the books in English, so in my opinion his writing is just wonderful, because I have no trouble understanding it. I can see why someone may say that it has a lot of capitalized letters, he does like to repeat the words Push and Pull a lot in the trilogy, but that's just because of the magic system, I suppose.

I'm not the biggest fan of Mistborn, though enjoyed it for what it was - it was a 7/10 for me, and for me the Well of Ascension was without a doubt the weakest link... 😅 Though like you I don't get that last comment: how was the ending a cop-out? 🤔 I also really disagree with that comment about magic/science (putting aside Arthur C. Clarke's law about that lol): a magic system can be more rigid/hard/"scientific" in its structure/construction, but that still doesn't really make it science? In the case of Mistborn: there is no explanation whatsoever given for why a human being would be able to pull abilities from undigested metals that just sit around in the stomach lmao. How is that science?! 😆

Ok, let me elaborate on Mistborn vs SA magic system, because for me it's not entirely about magical vs science, but more about: 1) Getting access to magic - hereditary/random vs well earned 2) Balance - Knights Radiant seem more equal in how powerful they are than mistings 3) Variety - for KR it seems like there're many more possibilities beside combat than in allomancy 4) Progress - 5-step Ideals vs some need for practice but basically "that's it"

I prefer Kelsier in SMALL doses. Probably why I hated Secret History. Also, the comments on Mistborn being a standalone, I actually do see where they're coming from. The tonal shift from Books 1 to 3 is HUGE. Book 1 was a tight heist story, then Book 2 was more political and Book 3 was full on boss level kind of action(if you know what I mean). I didn't leave that comment but I wasn't big on the ending either.... SPOILERS It was only up until The Hero Of Ages that I noticed the book's repetitive prose and sentence structure. In almost every page Elend was on, he was described as having the 'face of a man hardened by a war' or 'that was no longer the face of a boy but a king" or Vin was "no longer the scared little girl", and I'm like, "Dude, I GET IT!" What bugs me is that we could all easily understand this but Brandon opted to both SHOW AND TELL, as if we didn't understand. Another thing that I wasn't crazy about was Spook's inclusion as a POV character. I never much cared for Spook and his parts DRAGGED for me. This is probably because we didn't see much of Spook in Books 1 and 2 other than his weird crush on Vin. If there had been more to him in the previous books or at least if Sanderson showed us early on the nature of his relationship with Clubs before being included as a main pov, I feel like this would have been remedied, otherwise those parts were not enough to sell me on Spook. I didn't hate him, I just wasn't invested in him. I didn't leave that comment but as you can tell, the ending didn't work for me mainly because of the way Sanderson handled the prophecy in relation to Sazed's character arc. Sazed was in a religious conundrum all through Book 3 because of Tindwyl's death, and I was very much interested in seeing how this would be explored. However, it quickly all went south at the finale when all along the prophecy had to be taken LITERALLY, as in literary on HIS ARMS. To me, it felt like just a lazy gotcha! Plus I hated how it ended up diminishing Sazed's arc at least for me. How convenient was it that it was the Terris religion that saved the world and that a Terrisman became god, not once, but TWICE, so the whole point of Sazed's religion was just thrown out the window because all along it was HIS religion that truly mattered! It left a sour taste in my mouth. This is mostly a nitpick but I hated that we follow Tinsoon all around and he didn't even get to see Vin. I'm just a sucker for reunions. However, I can look past this because Tinsoon rallying the kandra against Ruin was truly beautiful. In a nutshell, Elend and Vin could have sacrificed themselves for the good of the world, that's fine, but it was how it all came about that I wasn't a fan of. Overall, the whole prophecy storyline should have just bring discarded if we were supposed to take it literally, twice in a row. I don't make rules on how prophecies should be done but the way it was executed felt cheap in my opinion, and the final nail in the coffin was how it messed up Sazed's arc. Pardon any grammatical errors, I learn English as a third language.

I enjoyed Mistborn and think it's a great fantasy entry point for people not familiar with the genre. However, my unpopular opinion would be that it's fun but ultimately shallow popcorn fantasy that's quite forgettable. It's kinda like a smart summer action movie. It's a great time but it's still an action movie.

Eh, I think it's just not like most other high fantasies in its *purpose*. It reads like Sanderson had a specific story in mind he wanted to tell, and intended to use specific themes, misdirections, etc, and in doing so he trimmed all the fat that's sort of a staple of the genre. I love high fantasy as much as the next guy, but almost every renowned (adult) high fantasy has parts that are meandering - extended sections that don't have much to do with the plot and instead just instill a sense of wonder in the reader for the magical world. I'm looking at LOTR, Realm of the Elderlings, WOT, etc. Mistborn is way beyond any action flick in terms of its themes and discussions, but unlike the majority of the adult fantasy genre, it doesn't have that magical sense of wonder and mystery.

@@Katie-ug3ep Maybe, but if you're looking for thematic depth and nuanced discussions in the fantasy genre then Mistborn is WELL down the list of books/series I'd recommend. And my personal preference is for books to spend more time with their characters and on theme, and less time moving the plot along for the plot's sake -- but that definitely comes down to a preference thing, I'm not saying it's something wrong or bad about the series. The best part about Mistborn is its pacing -- it rollicks along and is why I think of it as an action movie -- but in a way it's also its Achilles heel because it means it can't spend as much time exploring the characters and world.

Honestly, I really love the trilogy, but I don't feel that any of the books really belong together. Sure, the story makes sense, and the characters and plot, but the feel of each novel is so drastically different I wouldn't be able to compare any of them. The first is like a fantasy heist, fun and lighthearted even with lots of brutality. The second is Political Simulator 2007, which has almost none of the fun of book 1 but even more nuance (great book, just much less happy). The third is almost Character Death - The Novel (Now with added angst), and is quite possibly the most depressing book I've ever read in my life. All great stories and work well together, but they really shouldn't work. It's a statement to Sanderson's writing genius that these books even make sense as part of a series

The reason the Mistborn series seemed inferior to Sanderson's other works (particularly WoT & Stormlight) is I think he was not as experienced a writer at the time. The characters in Mistborn definitely feel too shallow; the worldbuilding does a better job. Book 2 is better than book 1. Basically in book 1 they are up against an immortal emperor who is also the ultimate warrior who seemingly has no weakness. Then the ending of book 1 happens and you suddenly realize they are 100 times more screwed than you assumed for the entirety of book 1. The Stormlight archive gives off a similar vibe that moment the big bad guy reveals his true form to Dalanar. Sanderson is very good at escalating the scale of the stakes far beyond what you expect.

I think for me, nuances with writing, I hate elipsis because, I get its supposed to indicate a pause, but the reality is that it tells me that the author is omitting information, which is fine, but now I want to know what information is being omitted. The magic in mistborn really is a science akin to alchemy. About the ending being a copout Spoiler. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . This better be enough space. Now, I'm not the one who said it on your page, I don't think, maybe it was but I don't think my name is there. However, I do share the same sentiment. I understand why it had to happen that way, but it seemed too quick, and pretty much utterly pointless, and selfish. You have mistborn being killed by Kolosses, including her friends and Ilend, her Love interest. She fights Kelsier's brother and gets in a debate with the dark lord: Wheel of time reference. Most of that is them talking while she is being shown what is going on with the world. She realizes she's God incarnate, and needs to kill the dark lord, one of the other parts of the Godhood, if I'm not mistaken I think there's a third part. Now, Love interest dies. Alright. Vin doesn't have a reason to be in the world anymore so she molds in with the dark lord, effectually killing him. I get it, she's a child and wants to live the rest of her life with Ilend. I get that, but you mean to tell me, you could have saved his life, and elected not to. Like, WHY? Counter argument: kollosses would kill him anyway. Okay, so if it was inevitable, why would you want to see that? That's really what pulled it apart for me. like, so many lives would have been saved but she elected not to, ESPECIALLY when she has an interest in trying to keep them alive.

I'm not a big Vin fan either. Her personality is very dependant on the male characters around her and I don't really get her individually to her relationships to others. I also tend not to like the self insert characters or popular ones. Which is the opposite of how I feel about Shallan. I LOVE Shallan. Me and Shallan Davar can hang. Shallan is suuuuper complex and definitely feels more like a person you can really dislike or like. She's definitely polarizing, but I tend to love the characters that have traits that make people not like them. I agree with every criticism of Shallan, but every criticism you can think of is why I love her. She's pedantic, opinionated, annoying, desperate for love and affection, a know it all and shady as fuck. And I love her so much.
