    Some people just aren't cut out to read fantasy it seems. I mean, if you're going to complain about gender roles in a fantasy world then you clearly don't understand the whole idea of fantasy as a whole. Fantasy, for me at least maybe not for others, is all about escapism. For an author to take me from one world, into another. Mistborn is probably one of my favorite series ever because Sanderson does such a good job introducing the world, to the point where I as a reader understand how it all works. I believe it's Sanderson's First law which states; A character's ability to solve problems with magic is directly proportional to the reader's understanding of said magic. This is such a great rule, because it means that whenever a character uses magic, they're not just like "Oh yes actually I have this one spell that is perfect for the situation but will never use again." When I read books, I do it for the story. But Sanderson's unique, interesting and compelling worlds just amplify the experience so much more.

  • @ebnovels

    @ebnovels

    I agree!!! And I think Sanderson is one of the best when it comes to outlining the rules of the magic in his worlds. Some people end up feeling like it’s a video game tutorial, but I don’t quite agree. I mean, like you said, I’d rather understand the magic than have the magic show up and work when it’s convenient.

    River Stixx We're not suggesting anything, it's common sense. You don't pick up a broom and expect to fly with it, do you? By extension, it should also be fairly obvious that ingesting metals DOES NOT grant you magical abilities (sadly). When reading a fantasy book, it's important to have a mindset that it's FANTASY. Rules and regulations present in our world may or may not apply in the book because it's world has its own rules to follow. Now, if it breaks its own rules, that's another matter certainly worth criticizing.

    Just a small correction. on "They have the ability to ingest any kind of metal and get powers from those" While it's true a Mistborn can use any kind of allomantic metal, they can't use ANY metal. As burning a non-allomantic metal can make a Mistborn sick. (Or maybe it was kinda intentional. Maybe this counts as a spoiler? I dunno.)

    I actually don't get people getting into a fantasy book solely for like the depth of the character, breaking stereotypes, etc. To me Mistborn is all about the world, the mystery and the plot. There are some boring moments, but cmon Tigana's first chapter was boring as hell and that was a good book. I think people who hate on Final Empire (that very small minority) should go and read I-novel and literature instead. That said have not read six of crow and probably will be picking that up

    I watched this video hoping some of them would touch on my biggest complaint; which is for the first, oh, 200 pages or so, Sanderson uses the word "paled" so many times that it almost made me put the book down. It was just about the only verb he used for every little thing that happened. A bird landed on a branch nearby. Vin paled. "Look, it's a bird" she said, pointing to the bird. Kelsier paled. "You're right, what could it be doing here?" Suddenly, it pooped. Sazed paled.

    Great video idea!! Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Sanderson. I didn't really enjoy Mistborn and I thought Steelheart was okay. Everyone has different reading taste. My major issue with Sanderson is his characters, I had no opinion on them. I didn't like them and I didn't love them. I do think Sanderson is a good writer and his worldbuliding is excellent, but I sometimes fail to connect with his characters. I will try to read The Way of Kings and hopefully, it will live up to the hype. I also think it will be interesting to see you read 1 star reviews for The Witcher series because your'e a fan.

    I do agree with some of these points though I absolutely love mistborn. The only people I care about during book 1 was sazed, docks, and vin. And Brandon’s never known for amazing writing, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ though I don’t really get the comparison between final empire and sixth of crows bc the only in common (at least to me) is that they’re both heist books and final empire isn’t even really a heist book (and also bc I hated sixth of crows but that’s beside the point). Love this idea though and hope you make more videos like this!!

    Rainy Liu it’s funny, I don’t think his writing is bad! It’s somewhat concise and to the point, which I think is almost necessary when you have such complex worlds. But I do agree that the first Mistborn book kinda read like a video game tutorial at times. I didn’t mind though-I love video games! 😆 And yeah, the comparison there with Six of Crows...didn’t make much sense. Also, that person and I obviously have very different reading tastes, cuz I couldn’t finish Wizards of Earthsea!

  • @Rainy1028

    I agree! I really do enjoy his concise writing because if he does have flowery writing I think his books are going to be so much long haha. I think it's understandable that the first Mistborn book reads kinda like a tutorial because it's such a complex world and it can be hard to explain everything without getting a little tutorial-like. I've never read Wizards of Earthsea but now I'm a bit hesitant! What is it about the book that didn't work for you??

    Honestly, and major disclaimer I'm still trying to get through the book, but as my first introduction to Sanderson's work and with all the insane hype built up around it I was really disappointed. It feels like the first draft of a YA novel not a mature high fantasy, I really don't get why people love this book so much. Hopefully it gets better.

  • @leonardotukiman8253

    @leonardotukiman8253

    I don't think it reads anything like YA at all. What are you comparing this too? I would say Sanderson's high fantasy is similar to that of certain shounen anime excluding the fan service of course. This is not Grimdark, but high fantasy does not require it to be grimdark.
