00:12:07 I think Sapkowski's work is beloved in Poland mostly due to his mastery of language. I remember smirking every other sentence I have read due to some witty comment, wordplay or reference. And it's not always easy to grasp why it's so entertaining, which makes it even more difficult to replicate the effect in a foreign language. Also, the use of dialogue and word selection to paint the characters is something that I think can be easily lost in translation. Disclaimer: I have never bothered to check it in English so the above opinions are highly speculative. Have you heard about the Hussite Trilogy(1.Narrenturm, 2.Warriors of God, 3.Lux Perpetua) by Sapkowki? I think Narrenturm (the tower of fools) has already been translated and the other two are to be released this year. It's a fantasy story based in Silesia, Bohemia and Moravia during a very interesting historical period. If you liked the Witcher you may give it a try. It was written after the main witcher series so it feels a little bit more refined. In my opinion, it was always better than the Witcher but I'd love to hear some fresh opinion on it.

IMO most fantasy authors aren’t delivering beautiful prose very often, but the best ones are either *so* excited about the meat of the story or skilled enough to reveal a world at the right rate that you never find yourself noticing. Brandon Sanderson epitomises the former for me- his enthusiasm rings true enough that you can overlook a lot of elements that just don’t land or that pacing just goes out of the window over a gigabajillion page read. The Witcher is kind of the latter, where Sapkowski plays some masterful tricks with structure and delivery (the messenger inadvertently cross-crossing the cast at the start of blood of elves is just exceptional *chef’s kiss*) but often suffers from a certain detachment.

  • @ebnovels

I think that Vin is a great character. In my opinion, she is the best part of Mistborn, and even though I didn’t like the ending, I thoroughly enjoyed all three books. I glazed over Sazed parts; to me, his inner monologues, struggles, philosophy didn’t fit with everything else. Recently I read The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance, and both were fun. I like Kaladin, especially with Syl, and Shallan is great in Words of Radiance. The character I don’t like is Dalinar; his lack of political skills makes me cringe every time. For someone with his background, he appears so naive. I saw you recommending Warbreaker a few times, and I have to say it is the best Brandon Sanderson book I’ve read so far. It has an immersive magic system, a mystery to it, interesting characters, and a relatable way of exploring religion and beliefs.

How can anyone believe the show was better then the books? In the show the home of the elves the woods were very very ugly. In the books it is not only a mysterious place full of dangerous unknown creatures but also it describes you more of the society of the elves and the relationship between Gerald and Ciri. I like the show but I was expecting way way way more. Even the music of the videogame is immensely superior to the show.

HUGE SPOILER for WITCHER . . . . I see Witcher is trashed without arguments. As a Witcher fan in every way only thing I dislike is bad ending (no matter how much I like realism of world's corruption, I hate bad endings), specially in this story where not only Yen and Geralt die (or whatever), than Ciri ends up in totally different world with some guy we don't even know. I understand that author wrote it before games so he didn't care how much unique and beautiful his world is for story to end somewhere else, even if it's Camelot, that's huge let down for me.

I can add some unpopular opinions to the stack: 1. Only reason I finished the first Mistborn book is because I promised. It was 90% set up and 10 percent action. Ew. I tossed the second book because Vin, whom I loved in the first book was exactly the opposite of who she was. She was clingy and soppy and I just couldn't continue reading after that. 2. Scythe...i dnf'd because I couldn't suspend disbelief. You have a hyper intelligent computer that takes care of humanity and wants to do the best and to control overcrowding they need to cull people? That's the only solution that they could think of? In a world where there is no death and no disease? Really? AIs don't work that way. All you have to do is watch an AI learn to play Super Mario Brother's and you will get how they work. They keep trying thing based on their directive. Even if they have to do it a million times they will. So one giant engineered space failure would not have stopped an AI. And can we talk about the idea of resources? Just terrible. 3. Shadow and Bone - I am revolted by the cultural appropriation. It's lazy world building. I am just going to shortcut worldbuilding entirely by using the reputation of the Russian culture. Not the nuanced actual Russian culture but the reputation. Just atrocious right down to Russianizing normal English words. If you want to read an actual book based in Russian culture done right (because it's written by a Russian) read Night Watch.

While I enjoyed the witcher books theyre definetely not the best of fantasy IMO, it has pacing issues, it uses destiny as an excuse for plot conveniences which is a big pet peeve for me, and there are some baffling character decisions that I cant get into because spoilers but really frustrated me. It was still worth reading but I would say the writing in the games surpassed the books, especially with the Bloody Baron and Hearts of Stone plotlines.

I understand why she has a hard time with him in Fireborne, considering her backstory but still . . . I thought her arc in Flamefall was very interesting, but I still feel that she was more unlikeable than Lee. (I think I just love Lee’s character arc so much that everything else is going to fall short :)) I thought it was interesting that she was willing to uphold a system (or at least was blinded to its failures) because it was a system that benefitted her. All that said - I still think Crissa would be better for Lee.

Vin is super interesting... until the third book. Sanderson didn't respect her enough in the third book, making her almost a shounen caricature of her former self with this "Elend elend elend!" in mind and always remarking the fact the Elend is stronger than her FROM THE FIRST CHAPTERS. She is a great character in the first and second book, but I think that Sanderson handled her in a awful way in the third book, just because he wanted Elend to shine. SPOILER And yes I know she ascends in the end, but this does not make up for how the writer threated her for the rest of the third book.

No offence but Sanderson, despite his descriptive magic systems, is poor in writing scenery. There is a certain way someone doesn't exactly CLICK into his world as much as you would with someone like Robin Hobb for instance. I mean, people had such a hard time picturing Shadesmar that it had to be put on the cover of Rhythm Of War😂😂. Plus, ash is supposed to fall from the sky in Mistborn and all that stuff to create a sombre tone, but I don't feel that mood. As in, I see the words on the page and I understand it, but there isn't that emotion or sense of urgency evoked in me as a reader about it. I'm pretty sure I don't make sense but it is what it is for me. 😅

Haha, I could picture those things, but I think part of it has to do with...dang, I don’t remember what it’s called, but it has to do with how much people literally “picture” things in their mind.
