18 years ago when I first retired, my partner (now my wife) and I bought a new motor home and spent the next 5 months travelling across Europe to Turkey where her folks were working. After exploring a great deal of the country, we regrettably had to head back to England via Greece, Italy, Switzerland and France in order to find gainful employment. We are now living in Istanbul where she is a teacher and live in hope that we can once again afford to have another Trudy to explore more of this wonderful world. I love to follow your adventures. Best wishes.

I'm going to enjoy your tour through Thailand immensely, as I lived in Chang Mai with my Thai husband until his passing, and I haven't been back for some years. I really miss almost everything about it. Driving there is interesting, but less hectic than Vietnam. It's wonderful that after 20 years you reconnected, but that's how it is there. You become a friend for life and they never forget you.

I was in Koh Pipi Pipi in 1989 the day when President in Rumania was overthrown and killed. I never forget that. It is 35 years ago. Then I took the boat to Koh Lanta and stayed there for some weeks and flew to Bankok from Trang. Thailand has changed so much since then. I am looking forward to see your trip in Thailand. Greetings from Norway with snowstorms and icey roads.

Very moving moment to catch up with a dear friend you haven't seen for over 20 years. Long friendships are so good. I went to Chiang Mai over 35 years ago. It was comfortably cool in the evening and some locals were even wearing long sleeve jumpers. Travel up into the mountains outside of Chiang Mai if you can and see an ethnic minority village. Enjoy the rest of Thailand.

Jeez Im 62 and was in Thailand 36 years ago for 2 months. You guys are making me feel young. These non stop Van Journeys are not exactly healthy unless you get good exercise along the way. Remember your not really immersing your self in the culture if it's just looking through the window of a van. Home is where the heart is and you can find that any where if you are prepared to let your surrounding come in to focus and get to know the Old laddie who sells the best garlic in town over and over again.

Excitement and adventure. I was nervous. It was a solo ride. It all went away though. Riding around in Thailand in your own bike, is just something else. Thailand for me is my spiritual home. Personally, I never felt as comfortable in Thailand as I did in Malaysia although that's not to say I didn't enjoy my time there. Watching this I also feel I perhaps didn't spend enough time there to really see the less touristy places. It was heart warming to see the reunion with an old friend from all that time ago and it certainly looks like a great start to your Thai adventure and no doubt the positive vibes you carry with you everywhere you go will ensure you have yet another amazing experience.

Driving in Thailand is not too bad as long as you spend some time watching and getting used to the patterns of behaviour before you go solo. These are the rules: don't hit anyone; don't cause anyone else to hit you; don't cause anyone else to hit a third party. This is not a joke: this was literally the content of the video the Ministry of Transport gave me to watch before giving me a driving license. Car drivers are generally very careful. Pickup drivers here, like everywhere else, are always trying to push through. The big exception is motorbike riders ... who make up most of the bad Thai road statistic. Thai drivers are exceptionally skilled drivers in an environment where formal road rules are neither widely known nor enforced. A small anecdote: a Thai friend visited us when we were living in New Zealand. He asked why I kept slowing down and speeding up as I drove through the country. I pointed to the speed limit signs. He replied that he'd seen signs like that in Thailand but he didn't know what they meant! It's true: Thai drivers ignore signs and road markings except for stop signs and lane arrows. I would say that Thai traffic is governed by a set of social conventions rather than formal road rules. People subconsciously adapt to the relatively consistent behaviours of the other drivers.

I love your way of travelling - you're true explorers. BUT there are also different advantages in going on an adventure travel tour. I've been on loads of these and really appreciated having a tour guide who spoke the local language and could take you to really out of the way interesting places that you could easily pass by without local knowledge. You could ask so many questions and have a deep insight into the country as a result. An example, in Peru we drove past houses with plastic bags on sticks and wouldn't even have noticed them let alone known they indicated that the house had home brewed beer ready for visitors to stop and try and because we had a local guide they stopped us off at one and we went into the home, tried the beer and ended up playing a game with the family in their garden while getting drunk on their strawberry flavoured beer. Top experience. It also avoids all the travel hassels and stress you guys have to go through in trying to just get from A to B and is great for those of us who don't have months of time to go travelling so have to fit it into a shorter space of time around work commitments. In other words both have advantages and disadvantages and are great in their own way. It's brilliant to live vicariously though your experiences. So glad you found your friend from years ago.

Welcome to Thailand . Koh Lanta looked amazing. The truck taxi thing you saw are called Songthaew (two row in Thai) - they are a very good and cheap way of getting around in some towns especially Chiang Mai.

I think the wait at the boarder has silver lining in that you got to rest up in the cool of the hotel, hoping you are both feeling better after your heat stress episodes in Malaysia
