I actually enjoyed driving in Thailand compared to UK. Once you get used to traffic patterns and and different thing to watch out for hordes of motorcycles esp ones coming up on your left. Cars undertaking on the left mad truck drivers it was great. Lot of positives eg generally well maintained road . Soft or hard shoulders on most roads (unlike UK with hardly any) Left turns on red light at most junctions unless prohibited) No ULEZ zones. No nasty car parks issuing hefty fines for slight infringements. Petrol stations that serve you. Downside is often very long waits at traffic lights at busy junctions esp when traffic police interfere with the lights. Many of the back roads we used in Kanchanaburi Suphanburi and Chai Nat wre an absolute delight to drive along.

Mention of Khao Lam is making me hungry. Used to love it. Sugar cane is generally grown in Kanchanburi and Suphanburi. different parts of Thailand have different specialities. Just wish I could taste one of those juicy incredible pineapples from Prachuabkirikhani. Taste is out of this world. Som O from Chai Nat Lay Yai from Chiangmain. Kno? (Rambuttan) from the south . But mangoes in season (excellent ones in Kanchanburi where we lived) with sticky rice and coconut milk is what I miss the most. Thailand is a fruit lovers paradise.

Mimosa pudica (pudica Latin for 'shy, bashful, shrinking'); also called sensitive plant, sleepy plant, action plant, touch-me-not, or shameplant, is a creeping annual or perennial flowering plant of the pea/legume family Fabaceae. Brings back a lot of memories as we lived in Thailand for 30 years. Note the general condition of the roads compared with the UK. Most (but not all) provinces in Thailand maintain their highways really well. Our province Kanchanaburi was really good and constantly trying to out do the one next to it (going north) Suphanburi that had a reputation of having the best highway system in Thailand. I was amused at the pronunciation of place names but to be fair they are not easy esp as transliteration into English (with Thai having 5 tone plus short and long vowels) is not easy. For the record the word for Island transliterated as Kho is a hard k with a short o and high tone. Think of saying got without the t at the end. But hey the boots on the other foot having now retired to Cornwall. Even after 6 years I still struggle with a lot of these Cornish place names! But the Thai people are generally so friendly and helpful and are getting used to mispronunciation of place names..and NOT making fun of you either. Did you ever have any run ins with Thai police? I have some hilarious stories of my experiences over the yeara.

Your tempting me now to go to Thailand. I haven't been to Bangkok, yet. I've rode to Phuket twice from Malaysia. Phuket for now is my favourite place in Thailand. Your right about the countryside view. Those limestone hills ( at least I think so). They begin in Ipoh, Malaysia and I saw all the way to Phuket, dotting the landscape as far as the eye can see especially the one in Krabi. Absolutely stunning views. I will never forget those sights. That small leaves you touched that closes up, is called pokok semalu in Malay. Don't know what it's called in English. Pokok means tree, semalu means shy.

JFYI, in English it's more commonly known as the sensitive plant or touch-me-not plant, Mimosa pudica is a tropical shrub that closes its leaves when touched. The plant is native to Central and South America and features delicate, fern-like leaves with light purple pom-pom-shaped flowers. It's part of the legume family Fabaceae.

Yes technically it is from a grass family, but then politically in many countries where large tropical bamboo species occur natively, bamboos are legally considered to be trees and thus fall under the strict regulations of their forest department. So "tree bridge" could be correct as well. The more ya know! 😋

Yep, was out around Kalasin on Sunday on my Motorbike, and everywhere is as dry as a bone, lots of burnt verges, thinking of running down to Koh Chang island to clear me lungs for a while. I don’t know how the folks in Chang Mai cope.

Absolutely stunning - can't get over the friendliness of the people. My daughter is heading to Thailand in a few weeks I see you taking ice cubes with your bottled water. I assume it is safe to do so?

Expat here and the Ice here is perfectly safe. Your daughter will have a great time. Thailand is generally a very safe country but just take the normal safety precautions you would anywhere to be doubly sure. But one word of advice Don't rent a motorbike! It may seem a great cool idea but Thai roads are extremely dangerous (60 deaths a day!!!!) Seen it all too often where inexperienced riders get a scooter/ motorbike and end up in hospital or even worse! Hope your daughter has a great trip. 😎

Enjoyed seeing Koh Lanta again. I visited in 1988, no asphalt at all. The motorbike taxis were just bikes that you sat on the back of, with your luggage on your back. The whole thing was trying to tip up at every bump in the dirt track.

The plants that close up are called "touch-me-not." Well, at least that's what we've been taught since we were kids (in Malaysia). They grow wild and are all over the place.

If you happen to reach Chiang Mai, do the elephant bush camp there. It's simply stunning. You can stay in air con tents there if they're available.
