Tudor! The brand that once was legendary...then disappeared...then made one of the most WWE SLAM entrances of all time and became legendary AGAIN. This time even MORE with their reintroduction of the Black Bay. Now that we have a Black Bay 58 in 18k gold and sterling silver though where will they go next? What about the Black Bay Chronograph?! How thin can it go?!

Today, Michael and Christian finish their conversation around the releases from this year's Watches & Wonders Geneva!
First up, we have the new Oris Diver 65 range in all bronze (that's case AND bracelet) with some really funky pastel dials. These watches are absolutely wild, and while Christian may like them better with his tints on, they're still some of the loudest and most interesting dials and watches in general that Oris has produced. Nuff said.
Onto Patek Philippe, who've done quite a number on Watches & Wonders this year with a few big releases. The first of these has to be the $106k Naultilus Travel Time Chronograph in rose gold with a blue dial, a fascinating and complicated watch, but still a bit less interesting than the new 5711 in steel, what the CEO of the company calls the watch's "victory lap." It features a green dial that's incredibly muted and feels somehow natural for the model line. And of course, what kind of victory lap would it be without some bling - so they gave a version of the watch a diamond bezel. You don't see diamonds on steel very often, if ever, so this was a big move on its own, even bigger when added to the nature of this release.
With Tudor, we have some real wild cards this year. Chief among them is the pair of new Black Bay 58s that the brand released, one in 18k yellow gold (that, to Michael's point, totally looks like bronze - I even assumed it was when I saw it) and one in 925 sterling silver. Both come with display casebacks, an odd choice to be fair, with interesting dial and bezel colors that help them stand out from the rest of the range. And of course, we have the updated Black Bay Chronograph in the Panda and Reverse Panda configurations. The biggest takeaway with these is that they're thinner now than the previous version, at just under a mm slimmer, and it will no doubt wear better for it...if you can get one.
Finally, we have Cartier, one of our favorite brands here at T&H. One of the biggest things they did this year was reintroduce the Must de Cartier collection, with a selection of incredibly loud dial colors as well as a freaking SOLAR POWERED TANK (on a vegan strap). That solar powered option is one of the coolest things the brand has done in recent memory and, in all likelihood, you'll actually be able to get the thing.

There is nothing noob about appreciating a movement's intricacies through a sapphire display back. I've been staring at them while pondering thoughts for decades. Looking at a piece of engraved metal no matter how finely finished is never as hypnotizing as watching a movement's gears and springs work their symphony.
To me at a $16k price point, you need to have a nicer looking movement. It looks like a Seiko 5 movement. Plus that’s really really pricey. For that price you can get a preowned Lange or Patek with a display back.

Really? A little too much of a homage to all other retro chronos. Add to that the fact that it is top heavy (same height as a Seiko Tuna), It falls below the radar. As these guys said, if it were a manual-wind 12mm, then there would be some “wow!” to it.

Christian, I completely agree with your comment about undecorated movements with display casebacks. For many people, just the pure wonder of a mechanical watch is enough to make even the plainest movement interesting.

I had this exact mindset when I bought my first automatic watch
My AD told me that the Tudor BB58 silver will not tarnish.

I love how marveled you guys were at the concept of a solar powered Cartier when Seiko have been making solar powered Cartier tank lookalikes for years.
I think Tudor's display backs were done simply to save money (since cases are precious metal). That said, I love the silver one and don't much like the gold.

Awesome I'm almost got 1. The way I would have preferred it is with a 12 hour counter instead of the date window. Still a great watch though. I'm looking into a Tudor Prince Big block chronograph from 1999

Love the Sterling Black Bay. Bummer about the exhibition caseback but i would probably live with that.
Junghans is also doing solar watches - Max Bill (Mega Solar) for example, you cannot see the difference to the automatic Max Bill
14:45. I am happy about the point you make about movements. I may never own a super high-end movement that is 10k or more, but I enjoy and appreciate even my 6R15 Seiko movement as far as the way it looks and watching it move. So somebody like me would love to see a Tudor movement. Some day I plan to get a clear case back for my Datejust. I would love to see that movement everyday.

@@LimitedEditionEDC To rekindle your interest: From Tudor: “the properties of this alloy are such that use does not affect the appearance of the case of the Black Bay Fifty-Eight 925.” Rumor is it’s palladium instead of copper.

@@Judah.Rosenthal 925 is definetly silver, not copper. Paladium is even more expensive and rarer than platinum. Tudor could never make a watch even just coated with paladium... but thanks anyways

The new 5711 with diamonds will be the watch du jour in the most expensive gentleman's establishments of Miami I'm sure... ;)
Think the exhibition case back on the Tudors was to save on precious metals. A sapphire case back is cheaper then gold or silver. All to cut cost.

I don't see the reason for a sterling silver case Tudor. Gold one at least looks gold. Silver case not only tarnishes but is way softer than stainless steel, while not looking that different. Why not make it in SS. No one wants to polish their silver watch every month with gooey silver polish 🙄

Why would they? Its a vintage piece worn by numerous people before, some of them might have been way careless than him. It could even have been taken off a dead persons wrist. Who cares if its still running fine and looks good?

i love those new bronze divers65s. the part about the depth rating makes no sense though. when you say they mean 100, not 99... its got nothing to do with meters really, and you probably know that too. it means 10atmosphere pressure resistance. it doesn't mean you can go 100m deep with it. it would survive the average pressure of a body of 100m water on top of it. but that would mean you got the watch down super gently, and you don't move it, cause if you would move it quickly upwards with its dial up, it would mean the pressure for few seconds would exceed 10atmospheres and water would most likely get in thru the crysta, seal in that example. then you say some people swim with 100m watches... yeah, cause that's what it means. 10atmospheres of pressure means if you do a stroke with your hand the pressure still won't exceed that equivalent of 100meters of water. 100m water resistant watches are safe for swimming. as for diving, you could probably go 40-50meters deep with it, which is more than you ever will without pro equipment. for 'skin diving' its perfect, but not for professional diving. nobody really needs more than 100meters of water resistance(okay if you do water sports, or you actually do deep diving with pro equipment going down to like 70-100meters deep, then you do, but that's like 0.0001% of all watch owners who wear a dive style watch).

A nice 👌 watch but I think the Tudor Prince Big block and Tiger from the 90s destroy the new Tudor chronograph. I really like how the Prince Big block resembled the early years of the Rolex Daytona except they had a cyclops date window. What would have made more sense. Is if Tudor dropped the date window for a 12 hour counter. On the new chronograph
VERY Odd Decision is not to mention the incredible 90th Anniversary Reverso from JLC in either of two parts. The only truly horological premier of the show. Keep going discussing new dial colors, case materials and bracelets. As if this was a bijouterie channel, not the watch one.
