Today, Christian and Michael dive into some horological hot topics, from Space Jam to fake Rolexes!
We begin by talking about the $100k watch that is absolutely made for Michael - a six figure Space Jam watch made by Swiss design house Kross. The watch is 45mm, but without a conventional lug system it actually doesn't appear to wear too large. Still, the point of most contention is the light engraving of Space Jam characters around the outer rim of the dial. Regardless, while Danny Milton is asking who this watch is for, Michael is sitting here raising his hand quietly and going "Me!"
From there, we divert into style for a moment with some talk about Pitti Uomo. The event takes place every year in Florence, Italy, and while it certainly operates under the guise of a convention/business meet up for the fashion industry, it's really just a chance for very stylish men to go meet up, eat and drink in Florence for a week, and wear their most peacocky outfits. The watches of the event have become a bit of a hot topic all of their own, but what's interesting to note is that a majority of the people photographed are wearing (mostly) vintage Rolex sports models. Classic, sure, but definitely not the most outlandish option on the list.
Next up, we have a really interesting collaboration between Panerai and Academy Award Winner Jimmy Chin, who once skied down the side of Mt. Everest. The watch is massive at 47mm, especially once you take into account the crownguards and pushers on the 9 o'clock side of the case, and at $20k it's certainly a lot of dough, but is it really that much compared to a Rolex Daytona at $30k+ at this point? That said, at only 14 pieces made, it's clear this may never even hit the market and may exclusively be a really good publicity opportunity to show off Panerai playing with material and complications in a unique collaborative piece.
After a side excursion to Vintage Watch-Ville, we move onto Michael's story time. In short, Michael got to go to Sundance Film Festival and have dinner with someone who had gone to his film school and "made it." Upon meeting, he noticed the guy's two-tone blue Submariner and commented on it. Then, over dinner, he saw something that changed the whole perception of the guy and the dinner - the Rolex ticked. Worse yet, the guy noticed him noticing, and the whole situation became real uncomfortable really quickly.

I was genuinely shocked and didn't know how to react so I just complimented them on the watch and said nothing about it. The fake watch thing, just no. There are fantastic, historically important watches at every single price catagory, so budget is not a barrier to entry. A fake watch tells me that the person wearing it doesn't actually care very much or know anything about watches.

A family member of mine lived in China for a year, and he brought back some fake watches for a few of us. It was a fun little thing. I wore a couple different ones on and off for a little while, but a good friend steered me from those to a Sub homage (Steinhart) as a next step. Months later I sold that and a bought the TAG I wear every day (WAK211A), fast forward three years, and now I'm watching the market and waiting for the right moment to pull the trigger on a 116600. The fake stuff served as a stepping stone when I didn't really consider myself a "watch guy" yet or even wear a watch daily, but I'd certainly advise someone new to start with an affordable Seiko or something like that.

As someone that went down the replica watch rabbit hole for awhile I'm calling bullshit on this story. Even the cheapest reps have a 2813 movement in them and don't tick like a quartz. A quartz sub rep would be so obvious that you couldn't pull it off from 100ft away. Now if you want to have fun look at a 300 sub rep and I bet most of your watch buddies couldn't tell unless they had a loupe or handled a rolex everyday. I know lots of wealthy people that buy reps to try out watches before actually investing in them . And seriously the only time someone cares to look at my watch is when I'm at a redbar meetup with other watch nerds. But seriously its super hard to find a fake that says rolex on it that has a quartz movement and it would look like a toy at that price point. I have since moved on to buying real pieces that cost a lot of money but it sure was nice trying a watch for 200 bucks for a month and really deciding if I liked it rather than spend 10k and lose my butt trading it in. Also I understand that making fake items is wrong and I don't like to condone it but I also don't live in a country with a billion people and make 10 cents a day. I'm sure if you lived in China and got an offer to work in a fake watch factory because you could make 5 dollars a day you would risk it to provide to your family.

I own five genuine Rolex and plenty more pricy watches that cost more than the Rolex. I wear a fake Daytona as well. Why? I can’t get one from an AD, I’m not paying grey and I love how a 116500LN looks. No one notices what I wear. I could wear a $400 Seiko or a $10,000 Zenith, JLC or even a $13,000 Moser which is as large as Big Ben! It doesn’t matter. The fake Daytona looks almost genuine, I get to look at a Daytona as much as I want, it keeps as good if not better time that the genuine. +1 second/day. For that particular watch, I say screw it! Make them available for MSRP and I’ll buy one, otherwise I’ll just fake it. I really don’t care, I have plenty of real ones. I support the Swiss and Japanese enough.

The whole ‘fake watch’, why would you is an interesting topic in itself. For example in the UK, it is near on impossible to even get yourself onto an AD waiting list for a SS Rolex, never mind actually buy one at retail, which leaves you at the mercy of the grey market at exorbitant prices. ADs prioritise ‘loyal’ customers, many of whom flip the watches as soon as they get them and there continues the cycle. Why is it so hard to actually hand over your money to ADs in order to buy the genuine article? Sort that out and you’ll reduce the interest in fake Rolex watches especially!

You'll never be able to fool yourself the whole point of a watch that has some kind of value is that is a trophy and you buy it for yourself to signify in your mind that you made it at whatever level "it" is but if you're wearing a fake it defeats the whole purpose

@Matt Man one other thing I have to say is I remember when I was like 19 I bought a fake Rolex and I wore it thinking how good it was because I knew nothing but the truth is no matter how good of a fake it is it's very easy to tell now that I have a real watch collection with various Rolex models as well as Vacheron, A Lange and sohne and Patek and some other less expensive ones. Once you own them and handle them enough you can tell a fake Rolex just by holding it feeling the bezel and the finishing it really doesn't take an expert once you know what the real thing feels like. There are some super clones I've seen of submariners that cost $2,000-$3,000 that are pretty close but once you look at the movement it's easy to tell it's a fake and at that point, if you're spending thousands of dollars for a fake watch, might as well buy a real one. They're plenty of awesome watches you can get for under $5,000 that mostly every watch collector has in their collection

Something similar happened to me at a restaurant in regards to someone wearing a fake watch. I was sitting at the bar eating dinner and the shimmer of what looked like an older steel-bezel Daytona worn by the person a couple chairs down caught my eye. I said "nice Daytona, is that a zenith movement?" he said thanks and didn't answer my question about the movement; he gave off the impression he did not want to talk watches. As he got up to leave, he placed his hand on the back of the chair, which allowed me to get a full view of the dial. The "chronograph" was running, both pushers were screwed down and the hands of the subdial were facing all different directions.

I find the topic of fake luxury watches fascinating. It's now got to a new level with superclones which sometimes can fool experts, dealers and maybe even ADs. What I still can't get: why spend $500, $600 or more when for that kind of money can buy amazing watches from real watchmakers with heritage and history.

Us watch guys don’t like or get the fakery . However the general public just don’t care enough about watches they just don’t care and generally aren’t bothered about it viewing it as inconsequential.. In fact I have found that the few guys who I’ve spoken to will openly tell you it’s fake and usually qualify their choice by saying that they would never spend huge money on a watch. However the guys who try and pass of a faker as genuine are embarrassing on another level .

I need to confess: end of high school / first year of uni I went a couple of times to China and did come back with some fakes… honestly I loved watches and never thought I could ever afford a crazy time or a sub so, in a way, in honor I bought them… never kept it a secret they were fakes… and actually felt embarrassed if anyone slightly seemed to think they were real to the point I would mention it was fake obviously cause it was so expensive and I would have never afford…. So for me they were like buying a Ferrari toy. Growing up they’ve all ended in the trash when the real ones came in: so proud… no Ferrari however 😂. So I think there’s no excuse to “fake” you own a watch but a love tribute to something you are passionate about but think you’ll never afford I would understand… I mean it’s not a real Picasso hanging in my living room but people are fine with that. I feel better now 😂

Then one day I actually met a guy who was wearing a real Rolex Explorer (thankfully I wasn't wearing my modded Seiko) but I was cringing over just the thought of had I been when I met that guy... that was enough for me to make that watch disappear in my closet somewhere lol.

oh i just came here to maybe explain a bit about why replicas can be ok or the mindset behind, in general very very general people dont care about what watch are you wearing, so why not wear a replica for walk with the dog, supermarket, i understand there are places like NYC or LA where definitely i will wear my genuine watches but in texas, as a statement piece that i wear once in a while, or for mundane things for my amusement, not for impress i dont think would matter if is a genuine or replica, also i do agree, dont try to make it look like is genuine, own it! if is a replica is not a big deal as if is genuine either its not a big deal! sorry about my shitty english lol

I know a couple of people who wear fake rolex's who can definitely afford real ones. and have real watches from other brands. They will both happily tell you they're fake and chat watches with you (not hugely knowledgable but they get it). They have a lot of respect for real watches and don't disparage them as a waste of money etc like some do. The thing is, they would only do this with Rolex, and never with any other brand. With Rolex the vast majority of their value is their brand, and everyone is going to assume it's fake anyway, so f*ck it.

There are many people wearing fake Rolex. Invicta has it engraved on the side of the watch. But if you are going to wear a fake wear a good fake. There are $1000 fakes you could not tell. People are being robbed of Rolex watches in Los Angeles, New York Paris and London. What would rather loose $20,000 Rolex or a $1000 fake? I try to fly under the radar with vintage Omega. But one of my Omegas is a 1949 18k Rose gold black faced Omega. It looks way over the top. So I wear this watch less. The new Omega Tresor in 18k looks similar and it is $16,000. So now I have two toned blue Invicta . With blue jeans and casual clothing it looks nice. It is Quartz and keeps very accurate time with a Seiko movement. I wonder how many times does a watch thief gets a phony watch. Can you imagine what he thinks he got fooled!

Who cares if the watch is fake? I guess I get it if the person wearing it is bragging, but honestly the only people who should care are the vendors/manufacturers. It's outdated tech, most of the pieces are mass produced with ludicrous margins & not unique pieces of art, but my biggest gripe, it's another fake status symbol. I love watches, I buy brands I like & admittedly have purchased a few Grand Seikos, but good luck catching me dropping 30k on a steel case AP....even if they are gorgeous 😅 Let people appreciate the design & unless they are trying to claim its authentic or sell it as such just stay in your lane.

I do want to offer a more differentiating perspective on replicas. Keep in mind that English is not my native language. My background:I own some genuine watches: Seiko, Tissot, Junghans Max Bill, the most recent Rolex OP, Casio, Sinn. And I even own some hommage watches (like a blend of OP & Explorer with a jubilee and a Speedmaster hommage). But I also own a handful of high level replicas. Those are for my own enjoyment only. I will never own a genuine DayDate, no chance I can afford it. But I love the 36 mm with the presidential bracelet, the hidden clasp and so on. So I got a steel replica 2 years back. It has a 28000 bph movement which can be serviced by any watchmaker ever (ETA clone). I enjoy it and everyone who could recognize the watch would know that in no way I paid 40k for a watch. So if someone would recognize the watch, usually no one does, I would immediately hand it over, saying it was a replica, because deceiving is not my intention. Second example: I got the A. Lange Saxonia thin with the star sky, it cost me like 200 $ with a Miyota 9015. Is it the real thing? No! I wear it during Christmas and New Years, because it fits the occasion. There is no one around I could fool. Meeting with former school mates I will most likely go for my Seiko 5, the F91W or maybe the Max Bill, if I feel the need to show my success in my career. But honestly I do not feel the need to show success with watches. I have two healthy children, a loving wife and a fulfilling job that pays the bills, no need to fake anything. For me it is like buying a very well made print of an expensive painting I adore. I will not buy the real thing, will not and cannot. But I like the experience of this piece of art. But I would neither invite people to my home acting like that was a real Picasso nor try to show wealth I do not possess. You do not need to share my perspective but assuming wearing fakes to fool others is a given, just does not cut it. I can put a big Mona Lisa print in my living room without fooling anyone, it would be so blatantly obvious that it is indeed not the genuine painting that it does not even need to be commented on. One thing you need to understand about highend replicas (250-500$): these are well made watches. They got 4 Hz movements (ETA clones or Miyotas), good finishing and great feel of quality. Feel free to reach out if you are interested in anything else.

I am of the $10 dollar timex vs $100 fake Rolex mindset. Still, Rolex continues to be astronomically expensive and eliminates a large percentage of their market with their heightened prices, which may either drive people to other brands or to fakes. People may so badly want the look that they’re willing to fake it until they make it. Admittedly, I went down the rabbit hole of trying to find the best replica of a ceramic Pepsi with a jubilee because that’s the only modern Rolex I would genuinely buy…but then I read comments talking about weight differential, movement, and how easily susceptible it was to water damage and I said fk it this just cheapens the experience and achievement of owning a timepiece like this.
