The video of an angry man yelling at a trumpet player in NYC was probably my favorite viral video of all time. I quote lines like "YOU'RE NOT AN ARTIST" and "An artist respects the silence that serves as the foundation for creativity" all the time. But the ridiculousness of the man yelling at the trumpet player made a lot of people curious about him.
He turned out to be a man named Douglas Levison, who ran a company named Flower Power Creative, which had a website almost as absurd as Douglas' rant. Although he made a Facebook post saying he'd never speak about this issue again, he would tell his story on a podcast a month later.

You nailed it when you said the guy sounds like he was playing out his own internal monologue and most likely years of torment based on his appearance. That's how I always interpreted this video - a deeply unhappy person lashing out at someone else. In fact, most of the time when someone is rude or mean like this it's because they're unhappy/there's something twisted inside them.

Heck I'm unhappy and directionless with a swirling inner-monologue of self-defeat and succumbing to addictive patterns but, at least I won't be like THAT. But then again I'm only 29. Give me 30 more years of stagnation and maybe I can further empathize 😹 I mostly play guitar on the street but I await my time to run into a character like this someday even if it won't be noticed and memed.

When Douglas was a little boy he wanted to go out and play. He wanted to run around and have fun with friends. But his parents didn't allow that. They were all too classy for that kind of thing, after all Mr. levison(Sr) once played in a band on the same stage as Jimmy Buffet. He took great pride in this and only wanted to live out his dream through his son. Little Douglas spent all his time studying and learning music. At the age of 10 he could play Ludwig Van's Moonlight Sonata (3rd movement) on the piano. Despite this amazing feat his father would get drunk and constantly tell little Douglas that he sucked and would always be nothing. Very often Mr. Levison would be very critical of his son's performance. Even going as far to beat him live on stage during a school recital for hitting the wrong note. For every wrong note Doug hit, Doug would get hit. He was hit so hard in the head once, it stunted his growth. The doctors were quoted saying "His brain simply does not remember how to grow anymore" He has remained the same size since. Douglous wanted nothing more but to make his pop proud and believed that one day he could. His dad would say things like "Yeah I'll believe that when I see you open up for Bob Dylan in Carnegie Hall" Douglas was never able to do this but that didn't stop him from saying he did. As long as he doesn't draw too much attention to himself then that shound't be an issue. After years of torment and abuse Douglas mastered music and has now opened up his own business to motivate men and woman, just like his father motivated him.

i disagree. this guy is actually highly successful and the reason he lashed out (allegedly) was because the guy playing the trumpet almost ran him over with his bike. also, the guy playing the trumpet was playing outside a holocaust memorial heritage sight… so Douglas had every right to lash out at such bad behaviour.

I actually feel sorry for this guy on so many levels. He clearly has issues emotionally. His “art” is exactly the way I thought it would be. Just bad pictures he took of trees and buildings. When he said, “I walked Anon Dylan to the stage back in 1970.” Probably means he creepily followed Bob Dylan or annoyingly tried to hang out with him.

Probably fake but I figured you'd wanna read this either way: From Bob Dylan's memoirs; "If you look at footage of me prior to 1975 I used to very clearly enunciate every word I sang. One day in '75 I was set to perform and waiting in my dressing room for them to give me my cue. The promoter comes in and tells me that they are going to send someone down to walk me on stage and introduce me. I thought, 'Fine, a bit unusual, but fine". A few minutes later the door opens and in walks the strangest little man I have ever seen; giant head, short squat legs, completely unproportioned arms, and absolutely no torso. I couldn't stop staring as he was telling me his name and extended his pudgy, sweaty little hand for me to shake. He was dressed in a 3 piece suit of red crushed velvet that he was obviously quite proud of and wearing a silk cravat. I was mesmerized....I couldn't take my eyes off him. He tells me he is a classically trained musician and has known the Grateful Dead since 1966.....now I knew Jerry was into some really strange shit back then, so I didn't completely disbelieve him. So now we are walking to the stage and just before we go through the curtains he puts on this tiny, tiny top hat that perfectly matched the suit. I'm telling you, I completely lost it and couldn't stop laughing as we walk on stage in front of thirty thousand people. There was no way I could get this image out of my mind......the band starts playing and I completely forgot all the lyrics. I just kept thinking of this tiny man in his tiny hat, so I just sort of mumbled and hummed my way through the set list. Now, every time I get up on stage, I'm instantly drawn back to that day in 1975 with this strange little man and I have to mumble the words to my own songs, because I can't get him out of my head. That short, troll like man in a velvet suit and top hat nearly ruined my career. It was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen." Found this on reddit Also, try to hold back your anger for the guy, based off his appearance he was probably told the exact same things he is shouting in this video. And for some reason this interaction brought back his bad memories, hes probably a likable guy 99.9% of the time, you're judging a man based only off his worst 0.1%

My girlfriend came to visit me and I got her a slice of cake on the house. He was sitting next to her, chatting with some of my coworkers. When she got up to use the restroom - homeboy ate some of her cake. And then left. I almost thought that I wasn't really seeing that, it was so weird hahaha. We threw it away and told her about it, and all had a laugh. SERIOUSLY 1 day later is when my coworker shows us the trumpet video and we're like - wait...... this dude is a meme? lol Made the whole experience even funnier.

I just love how he throws around that "An artist respects the silence that serves as a foundation for creativity" part and instantly shows he has no clue what he is even talking about. This quote could actually be very wise and true within certain contexts, such as when composing or trying to improvise while others are messing around on their instrument, but in terms of performing in a public space, this makes absolutely ZERO sense. Even if I was in the midst of composing a piece, and decided to get up and take a walk and hear this man play, I wouldn't be offended at all, in fact I'd be probably inspired by a fellow musician sharing his art and hear certain segments of his solo that could get the musical gears in my brain turning from inspiration, but that is fair game, since it is in PUBLIC. For god's sake he's not even mic'd up, and he's playing at like pianissimo. This guy is definitely projecting his own demons onto a target to beat up, and it was unfortunately this guy who caught his attention first.

When I read dril's story about buying a new car, and he talks about pulling over to get his ass kicked by "a very small man wearing nothing but denim overalls," I picture Trumpet Guy. Hank Hill's dad lost his shins in World War 2, and now we know who found them. Also, _holy shit,_ I thought _my_ posture was bad! I find this sad. I'm sure he's been told he is nothing early on in his artistic career, especially in the late 60's - early 70's those times he attended 3 art academy's. The fact that none knows him today, and he has nothing to show for, makes 'you are nothing' somewhat ironic.

Pretty sad but lets be honest this doesn't give the right for him to lash out on others. Yea, when I saw the video I had to try and look at it from both perspectives. Given his education, he obviously gave up something he dreamed of because of bullying so he's putting his anger out on others who are trying. For the other dude, you can tell he doesn't have a lot of experience playing the instrument and plus, this is in New York. Renting studio space to practice likely isn't worth the investment, having a car to get to somewhere like an open field isn't worth the investment if you live there because everything is so close since you can see he has a bike. Probably lives in an apartment so it's much better to annoy strangers who will more than likely ignore you than to annoy your neighbors in an apartment complex because there's no way someone his age as a house to himself. You can even see he was playing in a corner with no intention of "showing off".
