YTMND was a website that played a very important role in Internet history and meme culture, bridging the gap between web 1.0 and web 2.0. Although its sound plus image plus text format was very simple, the creative ways people could make more complex ytmnd sites was endless. Its creator, Max Goldberg, was also an early advocate of online free speech, often pushing back against companies that would try to get content removed from the site, citing fair use because most people online knew what that meant. He even got into some early Internet drama with Saved by the Bell's Dustin Diamond, who was not a fan of a parody website he made that led to the announcement of YTMND.

It's gone the way of Aint It Cool (aintitcool.com), Harry Knowles focused on trying to get into the movie business instead of his website and neglected it, then years later he got accused of being a sexual pervert and the site is a little dead now nowhere near the traffic it got in the very early 2000s.

This was such a fun era of internet. The creativity, the humor, the downright WTFness. I used many a YTMND music as ringtones in them days. Damnit Whang, way to bring the waterworks!
Crazy how since this video YTMND has been making somewhat of a comeback. You can make new accounts again and there’s new sites being made pretty regularly.
It's so weird how in the early 2000s, the internet seemingly became obsessed with the 80s, particularly with TV sitcoms. A few months ago I came across a bunch of old Facts of Life fan sites. It was surreal.
I honestly never understood the point of YTMND since my only interactions with it were links shared via Myspace to pages on the site. But I've learned a lot about it from your videos on it. So thanks as always for the kick-ass content! 👍

YTMND was a big part of my life. I found it way back in 2004, and it led me down the path of content creation, video editing and animation. I even helped with the edits on the parody you briefly featured here: 1:33 It was inevitable YTMND would fade into obscurity as the internet evolved, but it's a shame just how much of its history and impact has been forgotten. I appreciate your playlist covering key events and acknowledging how our community was a force for creativity and freedom on the internet in that era.

NEDM jokes aside, I actually think YTMND could make a comeback the way it started: As a site focused on protecting... Well, I guess you could say, the free speech of memes. With the growing climate of censorship, deplatforming and moral busybodies, we need a site with the sort of spirit a lot of those early internet websites had behind them more than ever before. The catch 22 is it would require clever engineers and cutting edge technology to make it work. A decentralized, block chain based YTMND style site with whatever technology one can drum up to get around state censorship firewalls that hosts a wide variety of media formats, old and new, would be incredibly relevant right now. It obviously doesn't have to *be* called YTMND, though I think it would send a powerful message if it was.
I miss the these days. 2001-2005 was the peak of internet stuff. Especially thanks to somethingawful forums back in the day. Damn I feel old
People take today's meme culture for granted but these guys were the pioneers.
Looks like there might still be life for YTMND. Checked the webpage today just to cry and saw that now there is a page saying they are trying to restore the site from an archive and are going to start using a Patreon to help finance the site. From the Patreon - "YTMND deserves to be preserved for future generations. The site has fallen into disrepair and needs a good amount of programming and system administration. Help us modernize the site, starting with a fully functional HTML5 player. YTMND does not have any advertising so hosting is paid for out-of pocket. This Patreon will help cover those costs and help support effort to modernize secure the site."

Whang, thank you so much for these web history videos, you have no idea how this one in particular resonates with me, sometimes I feel like I'm the only person that remembers YTMND, it's great to see I'm not alone, YTMND was some of the most fun I've ever had on the internet, possibly THE most fun. It was just so incredible while it lasted, it's such a shame it didn't last, but I feel a big hindrance was just how technical minded you had to be to make the really fancy YTMNDs. I think another issue and the one that really made me stop visiting regularly was that some users would make the audio extremely headphone breaking loud in order to troll people, it got to the point where you couldn't safely browse the site without turning the audio almost all the way down, it just got be too much of hassle to worry about. I'd say though that 2009 was the last year the site was decently healthy, but it was a sharp decline from there.
So many topics from that era you could cover. Seanbaby/Fat Chicks in Party Hats, for example, would be one hell of a video. You'll definitely be able to keep this series going for quite a while.
YTMND introduced me to Nightwish with a gif of Geordi La Forge doing an action roll to get under a closing door. Thanks for giving me the gift of symphonic metal in a very odd and roundabout way, Mr. Goldberg.

It's alive!
Watching this on the day of the death of Sean Connery, seems fitting.

I used to go on YTMND when I was ten and laugh hysterically at "Dramatic reading of a real breakup letter". I used to think my sense of humor was SO adept and SO mature because I used to visit the site so often, but in reality I was just running around screeching about kool-aid in some mocking, deep southern faux-blaccent.

Man I wish I hadn't missed out on things like ytmd. Hell I even missed out on reddit until last year.
RIP Sean Connery, absolute legend
0:52 For some horrible reason, I heard this and had to immediately look for my bike...
Love that you use the shopkeeper theme song from River City Ransom for your ad sell. So fitting!
So, apparently they're restoring the Site. Seems like an interesting piece of internet history.
Your passion for this subject is beautiful, man. It’s like... just so 2000’s. And that reminds me of better times. And I learned a lot. Dog bless, dude.
YTMND came back just a little over a year ago! I’m really happy to see it still active
Honestly some of the best content I've seen; well put together, easy to follow, information well backed up and overall extremely enjoyable. Good work man!
I remember the good ol' days of watching YTMND compilations back In 2009..oh how things have changed since those simple days.
My friend's dad used to teach Dustin Diamond how to play Chess. He did pretty well, I guess.

Man this is all my jam. I was massive into YTMND for those few prime years and made my share of sites. I have a screenshot but deleted my account not long ago because there was some pretty awful stuff there and I didn't want it to come back to haunt me lol. I still have my folder of files for my sites, ideas, and a massive bookmark link list of like 500 of my favorite sites or so. Loved this! YTMND had a big role in my life, friends and I still talk about some of the memes today, and I even though it maybe dead now I hope it never goes away.
Lol damn that vibe for text was loud, I legit thought it was from my phone. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Fs in the chat for YTMND, now offline. Who's going to be the man now, dawg?

It was such a different world back then. It wasn’t like these sites were viral in the same sense as things are today. They were just fun places to go that everyone knew about. So technically you could say they were viral but there was a charm about the old world look and feel to the internet. I miss the 90s esque internet so much and I’m glad I got to experience it.
Loved this video. My favorite YTMND page was the “Jamestown was a....” and the dramatic reading of the cease and desist letter. Would love to see a video about “FPS Doug” and what he’s doing.
You know, I've always seen you around on Twitter, but only recently have I seen your videos, and they cover plenty of my interests with aplomb. Subscribed.
A new Whang vid and That Chapter episode, all in one day? 🤘🏻😝🤘🏻 SICK!
YTMND has actually come back to life at the begining of the corona crisis...as max has essentially nothing better to do he has updated and revived the site. he also has a patreon now.
