Who Was Behind the Max Headroom Incident? - Tales From the Internet

The Max Headroom Broadcast Signal Interruption Incident that occurred in Chicago of 1987 is probably the most infamous of any such hack. Despite the FCC's efforts, the people behind the Max Headroom Incident have remained at large for over 30 years.
There were two incidents, one during a news broadcast on WGN TV and second one during a broadcast of Dr. Who on WTTW TV. The first hack on WGN had no audio, but during the second one, a person in a Max Headroom mask rants about Chuck Swirsky, WGN, The New Coke and a number of other things.
There are a number of people who were suspected to be behind the broadcast intrusion, including a musician named Eric Fournier, who was responsible for a character named Shaye Saint John that starred in videos with a very similar aesthetic to the Max Headroom video. A Redditor who was involved in Chicago's hacking and phreaking scene in the 80s and 90s had a few suspects that he believe might have been behind it. There is also a theory that the Max Headroom incident was an inside job.
This video gives context to the Max Headroom incident and investigates the various suspects.

    If I recall correctly, the Max Headroom show was about a dystopian world where a reporter makes powerful enemies and gets sucked into a TV which turns him into a vengeful talking head who helps the heroes resist corporate control of the media. So there could have been some satire or protest angle to all of this. I also am a fan of the SNES Shadowrun soundtrack btw.

    @@michaelcowanmichaelcowan969 No it didn’t. The Coca-Cola advertising was in 1988. Max Headroom started in early 1987 as a British television film, “Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future.” Later that year came the series, and then after that, Coca-Cola entered the picture.

    Hi! I have a Degree in Broadcasting. Yep. Not even kidding. Anywhoo, the perp was 100% an employee of WGN or WTTW. There is no way to intercept a tv signal without being at the broadcast tower, or so close with a tiny transmitter would be able to take over the signal - that you'd have to set up shop inside the gated perimeter. A lot of times, TV & Radio stations SHARE THE SAME BROADCAST LOCATION, usually (Like on the top of Sears Tower, or whatever), which explains how he was able to take over both stations.)

    Two Things in no particular order: (1) Captain Midnight, soon after capture, was identified as a satellite tv store owner and not an engineer.. He could’ve been both, of course. (2) There is a theory that an insider did not transmit anything but instead placed a strip of video tape over a spool of recorded tape set to be used later. Seems highly unlikely bc someone would have noticed bulge in tape or someone would have noticed him taking spool out of office or unwinding/rewinding it. Even if he copied the original tape and recorded over a small section, someone would have noticed when or how he did it.

    a major clue is the fact that the newscaster was aware of the hijack. if the hijack had occurred outside the studio by overriding the signal, the inside monitors would have not noticed anything. therefore the signal had to have been hijacked in the studio.

  • @SeaJayMalm

    @SeaJayMalm

    8 ай бұрын

    I work in a local news station, and that’s not necessarily true. While the primary studio monitors will show the outgoing feed (called ‘Program’), it’s common for at least one to display the over-the-air signal, so staff can monitor network feeds, commercials, and other programming that’s not coming from the studio switchers. It’s also possible (at least based on the limited footage here) that the anchor didn’t actually see the hacker’s video. I can imagine a scenario where the control room gets an intercom call saying they’re off-air, which they relay to the studio as a stop-down. But then a few seconds later, when the hacker is kicked off, the anchor is suddenly told that he’s live again, leaving him flustered enough to utter the on-air equivalent of “the fuck was that? I dunno, anyway…”

    So first off I’m sorry for the lack of structure and messiness that is my writing. Also if you have any sorta thoughts on this or evidence to disprove it I’d be glad to hear it, and all that. I know this is many years too late but I have a very solid plausible theory. While J and K didn’t do the hack themselves they made the video. Between speech patterns and jokes, as well as the skipping around and voice distortion (back then it would be quite easy to do the voice effects with the AV equipment they had at the time) I believe that J and K made the video as a fact. They also were big in the phreak scene of the local area and mentioning channel 11 means they knew about it before it happened, something like that wouldn’t be posted on a board because if it was, FCC and internet detectives would have found it by now, also more people would have seen it and watched channel 11 at that time, and I don’t believe they would ruin their surprise early also warning it would draw attention and I believe FCC would have already searched that angle. This means J and K didn’t do the hack. So we have the technician who I will call T from here on out. T was an audio tech who knew J and K either through the boards or as a personal friend. This would most likely be as a personal relationship to J and K that allowed both parties to know and access the skills and knowledge of the other. J and K would probably have done this for fun as well as being like a phreak’s wet dream to fuck with tv. The chances of another person, much less a technician for the broadcasting channels having the same speech patterns as J is very much impossible or close to it. Also I imagine the FCC would have picked up on it if they had exhausted the whole lead of technicians. It would be quite easy to pick up such a unique speech pattern and mannerism of the one the person on video had. So I rule out it being a single tech with a vendetta that did both the video and the hack. I believe the hack was already planned and ready to go at least a week or two in advance, the video was edited and sent to the tech probably hand delivered by J and/or K. I believe that the first channel hack without audio was to make sure they could do it smoothly in a control environment or just to test that it was possible and went smoothly as to test the waters and get a little practice, even teasing the night to come. The tech then put it on channel 11 the couple hours later that it would most likely take to directly go and do everything before booking it. J and K didn’t know a specific time but they knew it would be later that night and probably knew it would be during the doctor who episode. Now we have it after the hack where all three lay low and nobody snitched or claimed it. Thus I believe it was both an outside and inside job, having a guy inside who planned and executed the physical parts and mainly the illegal parts of the plan, and J&K being the ones to make the video. This of course is pure speculation with inferences on a secondary source and for the most part shouldn’t be taken as anything more than my personal belief. Though this is the first thing that sprung to my head, and I feel like it fits both the previous story and the revelation of being an inside job. TL;DR: J&K made the video, but a disgruntled tech did the hack.

    Hey man, good video. But I just wanted to say that the Reddit story seems fake. He claims someone told him to "watch Channel 11 that night." So he did, and he saw the incident live. Allegedly. The problem with that is, the attack was aimed for Channel 9 (WGN-TV). That's why "Max" picks on Chuck Swirsky, and "World's Greatest Newspaper" (WGN). That's where the attack first happened, but WGN engineers quickly changed frequencies and stopped it, they didn't even manage to make the sound work. So after that failed attempt, they went for Channel 11, where they got much more airtime, with sound and everything, and they could play the whole skit (which was still talking about Channel 9, even though it was on Channel 11). That's the one on YT which we all know and love. Had the redditor met the guys who did it beforehand, surely they would have told him to watch Channel 9, not 11, as that was the aim of the prank. That is just one of the holes in his story, which seems like the typical Reddit lying for attention. It literally feels like he picked apart every detail of the video and built a story around it. Max says "my brother has the other one." He knew two brothers. The tape ends with someone spanking him? He had a dirty sense of humor. Max says "ooooh" all the time? One of the brothers also said "oooh" all the time. Just smells like a load of shit to me.

Statute of limitations has long expired. 2) The idea that it came from the Chicago BBS community is a good one. 3) LOTS of Chicago BBS’ers claimed credit in the first 24 hours, until they all realized this was a serious crime. 4) It was certainly an associate of Dr. Ripco. A message board at the time had a technical question related to the intrusion. 5) The number of locations this could be done from are very limited, but densely populated. 6) Small point: It’s pronounced luh-GRAYNGE :) But a good video.
