Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series 2020 off-road review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A tweaked 200 Series is expected here soon-ish, but the next generation Toyota LandCruiser, the 300 Series, is expected here in the not-too-distant future, and that will reportedly have a smaller engine (a choice of V6 diesel, petrol or petrol/hybrid) and an even bigger price-tag all-round than the current 200 line-up.
So, does the current 200 Series represent your last chance to get a big V8-powered 4WD LandCruiser that’s capable of handling daily-driver duties, but also ready to tour remote areas in comfort and style?
We tested a top-shelf Sahara to see if the 200 Series is still an off-road champion.

This is a reliable and overbuilt go anywhere vehicle with just enough features to remain reliable and comfortable. The only possible overlap with Range Rover and other so called luxury SUVs is the price...this is where they part ways Where the others compete for luxury, this legacy SUV fills its own niche with attraction that only a Land Cruiser lover can appreciate. I grew up with an FJ40 and FJ62 and now drive this LC200 and love the legacy and appreciate the fact that this could be my last V8 SUV and may even outlast me. My 20 something son has suggested this could be part of his inheritance. That alone is worth the price to play!

Does it even have android/apple integration yet? As he said, it is a very old design and very dated. I've done a lot of 4wding and touring in my GU/GQ patrols. The 200 is more comfortable but gosh that difference in price is hard to stomach. The V6 TD might be worth a look if it addresses issues like the low slung alternator (fails when full of mud) and horrific maintenance costs over time.

I own the LC200 2013 LUX+ / full spec. Well I would not buy a new one for sure since in EU it costs 100k EUR. That said, I gladly paid half for a used one. Its not as luxurious as other brands but that is hardly the point here. I also own Prado and Hilux (from new) and those are very different vehicles. I'd say that Prado is the best car for EU of tho whole lot. Also price for the new is somewhat justifiable. And the reason I own mostly Yotas ? I am no fool in terms of "something being indestructible". But there is this thing that it will never leave you on the side of the road. Modern cars leave you with nothing but a phone number to call a assistance. Yotas always allow you to limp to the shop :-). That said, I did not have to change a lightbulb on either of the three yet (since I maintain them meticulously).

Too expensive in third world countries. Where do third world countries get all that money? I own Hilux 3.0CC 2017 make and it’s very good, 3Yrs at 38,000KM in mileage

It comes in at US$155,000 in my market and I am buying from Zimbabwe and I honestly do not see enough to justify paying and extra US$75,000 on this car. I believe that there are cars that will offer me the off roading capabilities I need without the premium price tag. I have to agree with you, for what it worth there should be something more to add it there.

The LX450d doesn't have the following things found in the Sahara: 2nd fuel tank, sunroof, ventilated seats (only heated in the Lexus) and no 3rd row seats, multimedia entertainment screens, which I consider as big ticket items. @@SugmaDick a Ford Ecosport is also a 4wd car and most definitely not comparable to the Land Cruiser. The difference between cars and trucks are essentially the frame its built on. Unibody cars are light, use less steel, focus on fuel economy and handle better. Truck chassis on the other hand are body on frame meaning better heavy duty applications, vibration, torque and payload. A Land Cruiser is body in frame, made to carry weight, get out of sticky situations and with independent wishbone suspension it is made to go over rough terrain and therefore most definitely a truck. I see where you are coming from though. Here in North America the term SUV didn't apply until the lines between cars and trucks got ambiguously blurred giving birth to the useless thing that is the CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle) If I was talking about a truck in your sense then yes I would refer to a pickup truck. Also really like the DMax and Hilux as well! We don't get those over here. 🤙🏽

I own a 2008 diesel VX. Same as the Sahara with leather seats but without a few bells and whistles, no fridge, different suspension and less buttons that you don’t use anyway. Engine blew up at 175,000. Ouch. I’ve now fitted an after market air filter and 2 additional fuel filters (yes all fuel is triple filtered now) and a water trap. Car cost me $55,000, got the gst back, spent $18,000 on the reco engine changeover. It’s now at 350,000 and I reckon somebody would still give me $40,000ish for it. So even with the new engine I’ve only lost maybe $25,000 which is pretty amazing over 6 years and 200,000kms. They are overpriced. The interior was outdated in 2008. Mechanically its been great and I suspect it was dodgy fuel in rural Vic that cooked the engine. It tows anything and has taken a generation of Victoria’s junior basketballers all over the state. All that said we just purchased a 3year old Touareg which tows things better and is SO much better to drive than the cruiser. Time will tell what the maintenance bill is and resale will be horrible.

I know it is a reliable car, but $125K for basically a super old car, it is a LOT to ask for. You can a way more modern car (like a Ranger or Hilux) for half price, add all accessories available in the market and it will still come cheaper than this, with a better package overall. The V8 does not justify it.

Anonymous, are you for real? If you make the claim back it up and tell us why. I live in Australia and LandCruisers are way overpriced but there is a reason every second car touring the outback is a LandCruiser. Reliability. Every year we still get tourists that just don’t understand this country and how big, empty and dangerous it can be. They go out, on their own and I’ll prepared. They break down. Then they die. It happens every year. In Australia reliability is king. And if you want to see a man cry go with him when he tries to trade or sell the Defender in five years.
