Should You Buy a Toyota Land Cruiser? What makes them so good?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician explains what makes the Toyota Land Cruiser so good. Are they assembled better? Are their parts simply made better?
So Should you buy a Toyota Land Cruiser? The Land Cruiser is an icon in Toyota Land! It's such a good truck I highly doubt any other truck even comes close. But if it is so good why is Toyota seizing sales in the US for the Land Cruiser?
In this video we're going to take a look at the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser. First I will cover what actually makes the Toyota Land Cruiser superior to other Toyota models and of course other makes and models.
I will also share with you where the Land Cruiser fails which has a direct relation to why sales are stopping in the US.
Then we'll dig into the 100 series vs 200 series land cruiser conversation where I will share with you a single problem which would turn the land cruiser from a great truck to a horrible one.

I bought a 2021 Land Cruiser heritage just before the prices got out of control this year. It sits next to a 2020 tundra in my garage. I’ve compared the two and could never figure out why the parts look different under the hood. This video answers some of those questions. It’s also accurate. I thought my tundra was reasonably well built, but the Land Cruiser is on a different planet

I did the same thing. I bought my 2021 HE in December of 2020. I had been on the fence for about a year, and was looking at used ones, but as soon as Toyota announced they were not going to sell them in the U.S. past 2021 I committed. I actually got mine for around 3K below MSRP. I’ve had it for a little over a year, and love it. Best vehicle I have ever owned. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to part with it.

Both of my teenagers drive 100 series and my wife drives an LX570. Bottom line, if they get in a car accident they walk away, if they get stuck in a snow storm they make it home. These vehicles are not cheap to fix, but as long as you are willing to do the maintenance they are truly the last vehicles made to last a lifetime. The build quality Is truly something to behold. My sons 98 100 series has 250k….no leaks, no creaks, no smoke, truly amazing. Starts ever time and will cruise at 75 mph all day every day in 110 degree heat or in 20 below with no issues. If mpg or cheap parts are your thing buy a Camry, if you want something that you can drive and hand down to your grandkids and it will still be cool….buy a Land Cruiser.

This is right - actually the 4Runner, Sequoia and Tacoma are all what Toyota calls “lifestyle” vehicles. Only the US gets the Tacoma which is NOT the same as a Hilux. The US has infrastructure that does not call for severe duty vehicles such as the Hilux and 70 series Land Cruisers. The design brief for the Land Cruiser is to have a service life of approximately 25 years in places where they do not have roads!! Think about that. There simply isn’t a market or real NEED for that level of truck here in North America. South America, Africa, Australia, Middle East - yes.

I will say I flipped (not rolled) my ‘99 4Runner going about 40 or so by the time it went off the road..flipped it back over and drove 500 miles home.. long story short Ice had just formed on road & there were 4 accidents within minutes behind me (including responding officer almost wrecked, so no ticket). Fixed it then had it till my wife totaled it rear ending someone. Could have fixed it but it was 215k miles & an offer too high to pass up from insurance. Bought an ‘04 gx 470 (needed 3rd row seats) which was great till someone recently tboned us (not much visible damage but it was totaled). I’d argue those 4Runners and gx’s are pretty stout/issue free.

Not a lot of people know this but on LC and the LX's when they pour the cast of the block they do it from the bottom up unlike the Tundra's and Sequoia's where they pour it top down. This reduces the risk of airpockets. In addition, after this is done they do an MRI scan to make sure everything is tip top. As you know, LC's and LX's are only build in Japan unlike Tundra's and Sequoia's which are build in the US.

Back in the early 2000's my wife owned a 100-series. When it got around 100K on the clocks, my wife said she wanted to trade it in while the value was still high, but she said she didn't feel the need to spend the money on another Land Cruiser. So we went to the local Toyota dealer in my Accord and asked to see a Sequoia. The salesman spent a lot of time telling us how great the Sequoia was, highest quality in the Toyota lineup, best reliability, best comfort, blah blah blah, and we took it for a test drive. At the end of the test drive, my wife looked at me and said, "I'm really not that impressed. It's not as comfortable and doesn't drive as nice as our car." I agreed. The salesman asked what we had and we told him a Land Cruiser. His entire story flipped 180 degrees, and he said, "Oh, well...a LAND CRUISER? NOTHING compares to THAT! Those are hand-made in Japan! You can't even compare that to anything else!" We ended up buying another Land Cruiser. 😀

This is probably the best review of a LC that I have seen, and I have seen many. I was fortunate to find a 2018 CPO Black/Terra with only 29,000 miles last November. Over the last year we have kept it primarily as our long trip vehicle and for towing our 23'Airstream. While we have done mild off roading (Telluride to BridalVeil Falls on Black Bear) it is too much luxury to make that the primary duty. My daily is a 2011 4Runner Trail with 200,000 miles (that has been all over the Alpine Loop in Colorado) and my wife's 2010 Highlander has 315,000 miles (even it has been up Yankee Boy Basin) . I agree most with the comments about the LC having a soul. It feels so incredibly different than my other Toyotas and also so remarkably solid and comfortable compared to my kids Suburbans and Denali XLs. Changing out the OE Dunlops for KAO2s made a huge difference also. I love the fact that if you don't know what you are looking at, you just don't know. I would personally not buy the Lexus version even for same $ if given the opportunity.

This car had the ability to create the fondest of memories. AMD is correct when he says that the LC is pervasive in other countries. In 1989 in Quito, Ecuador, I purchased a 1973 FJ with its boxed design,. In the third world, if you stray off the Pan American Highway or city streets, you're driving at best on Inca cobblestone, and at worst nearly impossible level-less country that cannot be called a road. The LC got us through the Paramo (high altitude grassland) to the bases of Ecuador's infamous volcanoes. We even drove it to 16,500 ft elevation to the "parking lot' of talus rock of Cotopaxi volcano (Summit 19,600 ft). On a climb to the base of the Illinizas, the LC pulled out a Land Rover from a creek at 12,000 ft. as we plowed new roads through uninhabited lands. The Land Cruiser will take you to places that even the Off Road Tacoma will crawl.

I've wanted one for years and years and finally pulled the trigger 13 months ago. Luckily I bought it before the inventory shortage and prior to toyota announcing they would no longer sell LC in US. I heard thru a buddy who works at Toyota that they would announce the end of the landcruiser so I decided to hurry up and buy. Glad I did. Mine was a certified pre owned with 19k miles on it. Love the vehicle and plan to have it literally forever, although I could sell now and make $20k over what I paid. But I love it that much, that I wont do that. If anyone reading this comment is on the fence about buying a 200 series 2016 or newer....do it. You won't regret it. Even if u have to pay over book price, plan on keeping it for 400k miles or more and the money you save by not trading cars every 5 years and low odds of mechanical failure, help offset the higher initial price. Can't go wrong with LC!!

One thing to consider, the 100 series has a 900Kg rated load carrying capacity v 800Kg for the 200. In Australia diesel engine models are the top seller. In the used market they will cost three to four more than the gas/petrol engine models. The delay in the 300 series has pushed the 100 and 200 series used prices through the roof. Cheers

Comfort and horsepower are two big ones. Maybe someday I can treat her to something like this. I love that The Car Care Nut mentioned how the people who buy them don't want to be noticed. I own currently a LC200 2015 4.5 turbo diesel which United states and some other countries probably can't buy from dealership. Jumped straight out of 2008 LX 570 with this engine 3UR-FE in the video to 200series. Love both 4.5 diesel and 5.7 v8. The torque the 4.5 diesel produces is insane feels like a steroid boosted cargo train, also has really good fuel efficiency about 13Liter combined compared to my old LX 570. which consumed about 20l combined. But 5.7 on the other hand has a great potential in acceleration and is more fun to drive i think. All in all love these cars, drove in many situations on them, offroad, bad weather, highway.. These trucks will never fail you, they are truly "built to last" type of truck.

This is a great video post and I think your characterizations are very accurate. I own a 2019 Tacoma TRD Pro and 2019 LC and the differences in build quality you mention are very apparent. The Tacoma is an excellent truck, but the LC really is in another league and great for long trips to the desert or mountains where less technical off-roading will be done. The presence of KDSS, 18 in wheels, and understated appearance with better angles is reason why I didn't bother to see the Lexus version. Hopefully Toyota will keep a version of an SUV with these feature for sale in the US--either has a Lexus trim variant or in a higher spec 4Runner, since all of these will share the same platform.

Another great video, AMD!! My local dealer had a new 2018 LC in inventory for months and I would always stop by when I was in the area to see it. In early summer of 2019 I bought it at a discount. Man, everything you mentioned in the video is correct. I`ve always looked for vehicles that are reliable, dependable, great quality for the price, (THE reason I have owned Toyotas since the late `80s) but I have finally found the thing that I love the most, being OVERBUILT!!! There is something about driving this L/C that is so appealing to me, as you said, it`s just on a different level. Such a solid, robust feeling in your hands as you drive it, even my wife loves it. (she`s hard to please) At 65 yrs. old, I`m planning never to sell it and own it till I`m gone. Keep up the GREAT videos, I watch them multiple times a week.

AMD is reviewing our LC in this video and we just had it rust proofed three days before this video. We spent $580.00 having it done and they spent six hours doing it. Two people spent three hours alone just on doing the frame inside and out. Next, I will be having them line-X all of the skid plates on both sides making them much tougher plus helping prevent any sort of rust. Most people will never understand how good the LC and LX are and will buy some flimsy little unibody FWD drive SUV thinking it will last forever LOL.

When it comes to USA/Canada vs Japan built Toyotas I always go back to the fact that the land cruiser is built in Japan enough said.

We have a 2008 and 2013 LC. Both were purchased new. I drive the 08 and my wife drives the 13. The 2008 has 370k miles and has been the best vehicle I have ever owned by far. Sometimes I feel silly when describing what a great vehicles it is and has been. The biggest difference between the two is the suspension. I prefer the ride of 2013. It has less of a “floating” feel. After driving jeeps for several years and replacing numerous transmissions and differentials I purchased the 08 LC. The driveline has had zero issues and is as quiet as it was when new. The quality is phenomenal.

Did you make a typo, SLWJKR? Your 100 floats LESS than your 200? I'm surprised to hear you say that. Having owned both, I find the exact opposite to be the case for me.
