Top lawyer details 'disturbing levels of racism' in the Labour Party | LBC

A top lawyer has told LBC how an investigation into the Labour party several years ago uncovered a 'disturbing' number of racism and misogyny allegations in the party.
Keir Starmer commissioned the report, published in 2022 by Martin Forde QC, after it emerged that there was 'deep factionalism' in the Labour Party over how it dealt with anti-Semitism allegations during Jeremy Corbyn's tenure as leader.
Joining LBC's Sangita Myska after a Tory donor allegedly said Diane Abbott, a former Labour MP, 'makes you want to hate all black women', Martin Forde details the level of racism allegations he found in the party during the research of his report.

So she was right when she wrote that anti black racism is far worse than the other garden variety anti semitism etc.... She knows this because she lives this. The rest of us who come from similar backgrounds to Abbot know this too. The backlash you get from raising it as an issue is always ferocious. Accusations of playing the race card are always standard. Makes you not want to bother just knowing these people don't change, they just modify their behaviours to make things look better but the underlying issue remains throughout.

Funny, considering the party line of Labour's efforts in addressing antisemitism have been normalized and prompted as real by the media at large. When what followed was denial and a continuation of what the Forde report signaled at. A hierarchy of racism with distinct weaponized accusations of antisemitism, worrying so against Jewish members. Bad faith actors abound, on the labour leaks I also remember how the party ignored its contents, perpetrators and went on a hunt for the leaker with intent of persecution. No fuss from the media on that

It isn't that the treatment of anti-Semitism within Labour has "improved"; it's that charges of anti-Semitism have been levelled against people who were merely criticizing the right-wing policies of Israel, then the subsequent disciplinary procedures used to expel Left-wingers (ironically, often anti-racism activists). "Anti-Semite" was used as a code-word by the Right to get rid of socialists within the party. This was the real factionalism identified in the Forde Report, though that report attempted to "both-sides" things. Absolutely no one on the Right of the party seems to have been disciplined for the racism that ran through the plots to smear Jeremy Corbyn or drive him from the leadership - plots that also included attempts to undermine Labour's efforts in the last election from within!

On the other hand, if one of the conditions to Abbott's return is her agreeing to step down before the next election, I think that's also unacceptable and unreasonable on the part of the party. If Abbott is willing to be fullly contrite about her own poor choice of words and blind spots concerning antisemitism, I would 100% embrace her return. I am grateful to Ms. Abbott for her unwavering support of Black communities who still face injustices reminiscent of past eras, even in modern Britain of 2024. There’s a type of xenophobia and discrimination which is normal for Britain. If they’re still wrestling it, and they occupy the highest echelons of government, it’s not a minority or a fringe. It’s the mainstream. British values can only be ascertained if you study British history. This type of xenophobia and discriminatory language and behaviour is simply characteristic of Britain and fits its record.
