***** It was really, really bad and made so many mistakes and changes I cringed the whole time, but pretended to enjoy it for the sake of my bestie who absolutely loved it (and hasn't read the books). The one mistake that I always remember is the scene where Grover 'buys some nectar'. What. Correct me if I'm wrong, but nectar wasn't something you could just buy. In fact in the books it was explicitly said that its downright dangerous to have too much of it (much like Ambrosia) and that monsters, like Grover, weren't able to have it at all. And yet we see nectar being served at a coffee shop by monsters in disguise and Grover happily drinking, and promoting it. Such a small scene, but such a horribly bad mistake that completely messes with the set rules of the Percy Jackson universe.

But it is amazing compared to the train wreck of Sea of Monsters. While the sequel is a guilty pleasure of mine, that doesn't mean it's good. They had the battle with Kronos in like, 5 minutes max. I watched it and felt depression. Lightning Thief was ok, they centered around the pearls which was bad. The biggest thing I hates was the exclusion of the battle with Ares, like, that was HUGE for the rest of the series.

I gave the second one a chance when it got to redbox, but it did exactly what I knew it was gonna have to do. The first half hour of the movie was them trying to throw in all the major plotpoints and characters they left out of the first one and try to make it seem natural. Even then, it fell short. If they make a third, which I doubt the will, I'm not even gonna see it.

I definitely agree. I mean it took out some of the best moments in the book, like Saphira breathing fire for the first time to save Eragon from Durza. Just picture they're dueling, Durza has the upper hand and about to deliver the final blow...and then BAM, Saphira breaks through the ceiling, roaring this massive flame.

Golden Compass still depresses me. Over half the interesting parts of the books are their commentary on religion, but of course the film adaptation was so scared of actually offending any diehard Christians that they left absolutely all of that out. Why even pick it as the source material if you're going to leave out what makes it unique?

  • @MCDexX

    @MCDexX

I actually thought it did a decent job of translating book to screen. most of the heavy duty religious commentary is in the later books anyway. Its biggest flaw was cutting the tragic death off the ending. If it was ever going to have a sequel, it would have had to begin with a kid dying, since it was essential to the plot. Honestly, I think that's the only reason they never made more. It actually made a decent profit, though mostly outside the US.

I came out kicking, screaming, and googling the address of whoever directed the "film" First of all: Eragon is whiney, aggravating, and all around STUPID in this movie. They make him a whiney little bitch, instead of the brave, but clumsy kid he is in the book. Second: Character. Visuals. WAS IT REALLY _THAT HARD_ TO FIND A SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD BOY WITH BROWN HAIR, AND A 20-SOMETHING GIRL WITH BLACK HAIR AND GREEN EYES!? For God's sake! Eragon looks just like they represent him, a whiney little annoying pest. Eragon has worked, on a farm, his whole life, "LET'S MAKE HIM LOOK LIKE HE'S A PRINCE" Brom is okay, but his character is also represented as harsh and nothing like the book. Don't even get me started on Murtagh. Or Roran. Or Glabatorix. Or- Also, the gedwey ignasia is CLEARLY stated in the book as "a shining oval in the middle of the palm", NOT a fucking spiral cut in his hand! Jesus! Murtagh comes in at almost the end of the movie, and then leaves?! What about the soul-bearing journey that went on for months of them trudging through deserts and Eragon being taught while building trust and friendship for Murtagh, Brom and Saphira? Couldn't you have also done a Lord of The Rings-style time-lapse of "epic journey walking"? I JUST REMEMBERED THEY MET ANGELA IN WHAT WAS SUPPOSEDLY YAZUAC? Which was one of the most depressing, yet power revealing parts of the book for Eragon! And they just passed it off as Yazuac being a regular town, where they met a cliche fortune teller. Saphira. Oh *God* Saphria. They got her voice and the telepathic communication down. Only fucking thing they did right. She knows how to fly minutes after being _born_ , flies up into the clouds and magically she's bigger than she's represented in the *second* book?! They couldn't have done a time-lapse or anything of Eragon caring for Saphira for weeks? I don't remember a lot about this movie. I just remember screaming at my television, grabbing the book for reference, and wanting to gouge the eyes out of the director. What am I saying, he obviously doesn't have eyes anyway, seeing as he DIDN'T READ THE BOOK. AS HE GAVE THE MOTHER FUCKING DRAGON IN THE MOVIE FEATHERS. COUNTLESS TIMES HER "DIAMOND GLISTENING SCALES" AND "THIN MEMBRANE OF HER WING" MENTIONED, AND YOU FUCKING GO WITH FEATHERS?! FOR WHAT REASON!? TO PISS ME OFF?! BECAUSE IF SO, GOOD JOB. AND FUCK YOU.

MysticKnight38 Far from the truth. Carrie, The Mist, Misery and Shawshank Redemption are all as good or better than the books. (Well, The Mist was a short story) And The Shining is arguably better, but went in a somewhat different direction than the book. His movies have usually been alright, it's the miniseries that always sucked, such as It, Tommyknockers, The Langoliers, and The Stand.

I can't tell you how much I had to argue with my friends that only saw the movie. The movie left out SO MUCH I don't know how they thought they could pull of a second after having missing so many important plot points, no missing the WHOLE PLOT.

I think the mistake that was made is that the first two Harry Potter movies DID take a few things out, but they weren't important to the plot of the future movies. I think Chris tried to do the same with the Percy Jackson movies, but there wasn't really anything you could take out that wasn't essential for the next movies.

For me, it wasn't the age differences that ruined the Percy Jackson films, it was the horrible adaptation of the Greek Mythos. The books did a wonderful job of revamping and modernizing the classic stories for newer generations, but the movie threw all that clever imagination out the window and gave us another generic YA fantasy/adventure flick. Like most of the movies on this list, by itself it was just mediocre, but when compared to it's source material, it was just criminal.

"Interview with the Vampire" was terrible, too. This film adaption pissed me off so hard. They changed way to much from this great novel. For example: 1. Louis had shorter, BLACK hair and stunning green eyes. Brad Pitt?.... wrong choice! 2. They skipped way to much of his mortal life to show what made him so desperate to give in willingly to Lestat, instead they lost too much time with portraying his black slaves and their voodoo issues... I also don't recall their was a black slave girl called Yvette in the novel 3. Louis was 25, not 24 4. They completely left out Lestat's father which was very interesting in the books because it showed a) Lestat was not very old as a vampire and b) he had his issues with the remains of his mortal life as well 5. Claudia was 7 or 8, not 12 years old. I don't remember her to have curly hair either. I also hated Dunst's awful screenplay. 6. There was actually a lot of time between Madeleine's changing and their execution by the theatre vampires 7. They completely left out that Louis and Claudia actually did find vampires on their trip to Europe although they were like a completely different, soulless, monstrous species of vampire. Just like in the old Nosferatu times. 8. Armand was described as barely older than Louis with wavy, BROWN hair just above his shoulders. Instead they chose Antonio Banderas, looking almost twice as old as Louis with ass-long BLACK hair, WTF??? 9. Nowhere in the books was written that Rice's vampires were able to "fly" or float in the air in some way. WTF the 2nd 10. They completely changed the ending as the interview guy was bitten (yet neither killed nor changed) by Louis himself. In fact the book left open whether the guy and Lestat ever met 11. Lestat, although still in bad condition, was in fact not alone in his misery in the book and Louis was not so ignorant and cold towards him when they met again after decades Overall, there have been so many scenes that were not in the novel or completely different. Also major plot hole: if movie Claudia left a female body to decay in her bed, why have Louis and Lestat not smelled it instantly right from the beginning? Even a minor mortal is able to detect a rotten corpse in their house. You cannot cover up that smell. I still cannot believe that Anne Rice was on set and was okay with all this shit... Oh but she did not want Tom Cruise as Lestat at first.... The only cast choice that was actually pretty close to her novel portrait *facepalm.... And I'm SICK AND TIRED of people telling me this movie was actually good.... No it was not. Not if you dare comparing it with the novel which you should. It's a book-to-film adaptation... and as such a rather bad one. Period.

i totally agree with the fact they left out the biggest plot story in Eragon with the dwarves and also with how they protrayed the Urgals and the Ra' zac that was Eragons main enemies in the book was completely not the way they looked in the movie. Urgals are roughly humanoid in appearance, with grayish skin, bowed legs and thick arms. They have yellow, piggish eyes, claws on their hands in place of nails and a pair of long, twisted horns protruding from above their ears. The way they protrayed them in the movie was tallish humans painted black wearing ram horns. The Ra'zac were vaguely human in shape, being bipedal, but this was where their similarity with humans ended. As pupae of the Lethrblaka, they had a hard exoskeleton, and they had a hooked, sharp beak and a barbed, purple tongue in their mouths.[1] Their gleaming black eyes were the size of a man's fist, were lidless, and had no pupils or irises.[1] They were thin-waisted and had hunched backs as a result of the wings growing beneath with a large and deeply ridged chest that gave them an emaciated appearance that made their ribs seem as though they were outside their body, while their thin legs had an extra, backwards-facing joint that gave them an unsettling walking and running gait. In the movie they made the Ra'zac being a summoned elemental monster made from bugs.

Percy Jackson was a pretty bad adaptation. It left out so many locations and events, and the ending was completely different than in the book, at least with The Lightning Thief.

Okay but why does no one talk about Eragon? I get that the Percy Jackson movies were BAD, BUT ERAGON GUYS. THAT WAS THE WORST BOOK-TO-MOVIE ADAPTION EVER MADE, NOW COME ON. Everything wrong with it (My concerns) 1- Arya. She had BLACK HAIR and POINTED EARS, because she was an elf. The directors didn't even care to give her plastic ears which just shows how damn lazy they were. She was such a strong female character in terms of fight and mentality and they just portrayed her as a love interest for Eragon. Lol, they didn't even get together at the end of Book 4. 2- Murtagh. Now PLEASE, he was literally my favorite. He was such a complex and beautiful character in the books. He went through a whole redemption arc throughout the series and in the books they made him seem like a grinning idiot who was so happy to accompany Eragon to the Varden while IN BOOK 1, HE WAS AGAINST IT. PLUS HE WAS KIND OF EMO. In the movie he's the exact opposite of himself. Sure, the actor was fine but idk. Movie Murtagh didn't sit right with me and never will. (HIS SCAR WASN'T EVEN ON HIS BACK, IT WAS ON THE STOMACH. literally on the TUMMY.) 3- Character scripts were sooo bland lmaooo. I didn't feel like watching a movie tbh, the lines were so cringe and cliche. Plus the fight scenes were so disappointing. Sword fights played a big part in the book and the fact that they didn't even bother with them confirms this as a mess. 4- NASUADAAAAA. No one talks about her. Not even the fandom. Everyone's either obsessed with Angela, Arya, or Eragon. Like seriously? She's a major POC POWER HOLDING WOMAN. SHE'S SO SLAY. SHE'S A LITERAL QUEEN. Everyone says she's boring, LIKE EXCUSE ME MAAM/SIR? Have you even read the books?? The movie gave her a legit 3 second scene. 3 SECONDS AND IM NOT EVEN KIDDING. She's a major character in the books (especially in the later ones) and the fact that they didn't introduce her properly makes me so mad. After Murtagh, she's my favorite character (Actually.. On par with him). Cmon now, The Trial Of The Long Knives was such a slay moment. 5- Roran and Katrina. Katrina wasn't even there lol. Roran was just..... bland. These aren't even half the problems, trust me, but the ones that bothered me the most. (I'm looking at you Nasuada) Hopefully they do us JUSTICE in the remake. DISNEY PLEASE, i'm counting on you :(

Th Percy Jackson books have been some of my favourites for years, and I still get every new book Rick Riordan writes. I was very excited for the first film. I refused to go see the second.

Don't get angry. This list doesn't mean they were necessarily bad movies, just bad adaptations of their source material.

Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant. Glosses over the dark tone of Darren Shan's popular books with a very family friendly appeal but isn't helped by it's drastic changes and rather odd casting.

100% agreed. The reason I liked Cirque du Freak was because it had a dark tone to it. John C. Reilly as Mr. Crepsley though? And I don't mean to sound like a dick or anything, but Mr. Tall was NOT asian. I also imagined Harkat and the little people to be more gruesome looking.

I totally agree! The books are basically a horror/adventure/coming of age story. I was so upset after I saw the movie. And now there is likely no chance for any future movies on this story.

I would like this a hundred times if it were possible, I was so dissapointed seeing my favourite book series turned to an average story in the film. I still hope a director wants to do it the right way and makes this series the best movie adaption the world has ever seen!

Mysterygamer175 adapting a book to physical settings, actors, and ambiance is stupendously difficult. I'm amazed Netflix has pulled it off. I'm really hoping that Starz can somehow do it with the upcoming adaptation of American Gods

Captain Corelli's Mandolin was a travesty. They took a gritty novel that had as ONE of its themes a love affair between the captain and a Greek girl, but they made the film JUST that, except they made it soppy, unlike the book. Not sure why House of the Spirits was not on the list, but then it was so terrible compounded by the fact that it had a stellar cast, and had a very limited release, that most people wouldn't even know it exists.
