Top 10 Best Movies Based on a TV Series
Ойын-сауық
Time to put a fresh spin on those beloved classics. In this video, www.WatchMojo.com counts down our picks for the top 10 best movies based on a TV series. For this list, we're looking at live-action film remakes or reboots of TV series that did justice to the source material, and that are not considered a continuation of the shows in question. That means they don't feature the original cast members, unless it's in a different role than they originally played or in a small cameo.
Special thanks to our users sarahjessicaparkerth, Ruston BlackBatman Henry, DoctorXander, Awesome One, Andrew A. Dennison, Erica Jones, Mattyhull1 and Chance Ellison for submitting the idea on our Suggestions Page at WatchMojo.com/suggest!

Has a top ten on best/ worst movie made based on video games been done?
What about "The Muppets" and "The Muppets Most Wanted"? Both of those movies were both funny and truthful to "The Muppet Show" parents grew up with in the 70's and 80's. When they were released in this decade, some fans bursted in tears.

I'm sorry, I'm a trekkie too, but J.J. Abrams can't direct a movie to save a life. He destroyed Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And he is destroying all of the Star Trek movies.
You forgot The Lone Ranger... "said no one ever".
The Fugitive is such a great movie. It deserves the #1 spot since not only it did the TV show justice, but still having it's own feel. I'm surprised they didn't put up The A-Team movie in the list. I heard many people liked it.

My main complaint (and I think this hurt the movie) is that it became an origin story, rather than model it like a weekly episode of the TV series (A-Team are hired by someone to stop some bad guys, A-Team build stuff to blow up the heavies etc, usually Face gets the girl who hired them etc).

Star Trek and Jump Street are both part of their original series. Star Trek is set in an AU, with Nimoy playing the same Spock that he played in the original and its follow up movies and shows. The Jump Street movies are continuations with Johnny Depp, Holly Robinson, and Peter DeLuise reprising their characters in 21 Jump Street and Richard Grieco and Dustin Nguyen doing the same in 22 Jump Street even if they were just cameos. So yeah.
We need the man from U.N.C.L.E added to this.

And, for some reason, reverse the roles of the two main characters -_- What's the point of that? The writer wanted to be unique, I get that, but just reversing the roles is not unique, it's lazy, confusing and gives a serious blow to the fandom.
technically 21 Jump Street was a continuation, as the two cameo appearances both said they used to be Jump Street, and they used to play two of the main characters
Hooray for a mention of I Spy! I Spy was one of the greatest TV shows of all time. Robert Culp and Bill Cosby were amazing and because of Robert's tutelage Bill Cosby went on to earn 3 consecutive Emmy awards for his performance as super spy Alexander Scott. You definitely need to cover I Spy in more lists, maybe one about TV shows that influenced Civil Rights in the 60s. I Spy would definitely make that top 5 on that list.
That cameo from Johnny Depp in 21 jump st was just amazing, best suprise cameo ever!!!!!
21 Jump Street should have been number one.
@collenegandy3605

21 Jump Street sucked
Wow. Didn't know 21 Jump Street was based off a TV show! :O I've seen The Fugitive, Mission Impossible, etc.
I love the Steve Carrell version of Get Smart. Wonderful update of a classic tv show, complete with Max's lovably bumbling spywork.
The A-Team should've been on this list. That's one of the best films based on a tv show ever. It has a great cast, story and action I've ever seen.
@RedWolfWindgear
9 жыл бұрын
I agree it was a solid film. Heck the original Face made a cameo.
Vic Morrow's death during the making of The Twilight Zone was a horrific tragedy for which John Landis was never held responsible. I love Landis's work on movies like The Blues Brothers, but even he admitted that the deaths of Morrow and those two children were due to his habit of cutting corners and ignoring regulations. For more information see the Wikipedia article.
LOOOOVE LOVE LOVE 'The Fugitive'. Perfect list. Love everything about it.
I remember being nervous back in the 90's on how a Fugitive remake would turn out. Boy I'm glad they got it right😄

Can't really go wrong when you cast Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones.
A-Team? Or is it considered a continuation even though it just explains the origins, kind of like Star Trek...?
@TheGreatLKHS
10 жыл бұрын
A-Team is not a continuation. It was its own story and universe. It should have been on this list, at least honorably mentioned.
Brady Bunch deserved to be in the actual top ten in my opinion.
Is Mr. Peabody and Sherman also considered a best TV to Movie adaptation as well?
Oh, and, for the record, three original castmates made cameos. Peter DeLois was in the shootout scene, next to Depp. Holly Robinson-Peete turned out to be the requisition officer in the garage.
WTF, were was The A Team
Get Smart was such a good movie!
WatchMojo I'm curious..where does the A-Team flick fall in? Worst or Best?

HEY!! In 22JS there where 2 familiar faces! Jhony Depp and the other guy his partner with the familiar face (can't remember his name).
I agree with Fugitive, Mission impossible and Adams family but that's it.
Surprised to see Star Trek on here as, althought it is a re-imagined reboot, the plot makes it a continuation of the original series and films, as evidenced by the Leonard Nimoy Spock. It is the same Spock that served with Shatner's Kirk, time travelled to the past where history was changed to become this alternate version.
Was batman not an adaptation of th e television series? Or is it technically an adaptation of the comics?
I started on the new star trek movie, and pretty much worked my way back, and now I love both the new and old Star Treks
I never knew the Fugitive was a tv show
Dude, the 2009 Star Trek IS a continuation of the original. Or, rather, a spin-off. It has THE ORIGINAL SPOCK! I mean, damn! Talk about not following your own mantra.
@TokoGT
10 жыл бұрын
Its my fave on the list and my fave movie but yes, its not just a 'reboot', its origin is set like 30 years after Nemesis. Was kinda hoping it would make the list though it doesn't fit.
@undead890
10 жыл бұрын
Its not really a spin-off, more a re imagining of the original Star Trek
@Aurelio4491
10 жыл бұрын
It's a reboot in the most literal sense possible. The movie's premise actually involves traveling through time and changing details in the original series to make a new story.
@IamConnorMacLeod
10 жыл бұрын
Tim H Not really, no. Nero and Spock Prime were "sucked" into an alternate timeline, that was further changed by Nero's 9/11-esque attack on Kirk's birthday. The original timeline still exists, but is not the focus of JJ's Trek-verse.
@IamConnorMacLeod
10 жыл бұрын
zer0dahero First, its prequEl. Prequel. Second, it is not a prequel - its a parallel universe whose similar-to-Prime-Universe was drastically altered by Nero's incursion during Kirk's birth. Both Nero and Spock come from the Prime Universe, several years after Nemesis, the tenth Star Trek film. Ergo, its a continuation, only semi at that.
Good list. I'm lad Get Smart at least got an honorable mention.
Your list had a perfect top 3, though I would have put Maverick at #4.
Doesn't Star Trek break your rule? Nemoy plays the same role and it isn't just a cameo.

You should do a Top 10 Bond list and a Top 10 Hitchcock Films list. Those should be interesting.

I think because (note i'm not a star trek fan) the old movies used the original cast and the modern ones use a whole new cast. In the beginning they said they weren't listing films with the original cast (only if it's for a cameo or playing a completely different role)

@MatthewMojica
10 жыл бұрын
B0bStapl3 No it doesnt. The producers weren't aiming to please you, they were aiming to please the masses. The masses never saw Star Trek the show, this is something you people seem to forget. They were brilliant honestly, they pulled it off with a good looking cast to bring in children and new adults to watch it and thus, were succesful.
@B0bStapl3
10 жыл бұрын
The Star Trek fan base is one of the biggest fan bases around, with most of the masses at some point being a Star Trek fan. And how can you make a Star Trek film and not aim it at the Star Trek fans. I agree they were trying to gain new fans as well, but it's core fan base was still meant to be Star Trek fans. That is one of the reasons Siomon Pegg was brought onto the film as he is a Star Trek fan unlike J.J
All I could think about when watching this was the amount of references the Simpsons used from these films.
I love 21 Jump Street with a Johnny Depp´s cameo
JJ Abrams' Star Trek misses the mark bad. Qualifying this as a good movie does a huge disservice to the original series and its fans.

+DreamyEyedLover that's just your nostalgia taking. Keep an open mind and don't let past experiences ruin your opinion on Remakes I might add you. They tried to make it enjoyable for new movie goers and the people how seen the show , and hey it worked really well
@brianjones7907

shawn babcock* it has nothing to do with nostalgia its the film makers habit of taking well loved tv shows (guaranteed audience) and making what are not in actual In fact a remakes as everything that made them loved by original fans has gone replaced by cheep Laughs & slapstick instead of action ,making them them a parody of the originals , there for they should not be on the list to start with.....
