My take on the length of Cassie's murder in the end was to show that it was an actual decision. Not an accident or a crime of the moment

truly a crime that you're the first person I've seen to put birds of prey on their list. it was robbed of oscar noms for costuming, makeup, AND best original song (can you IMAGINE living in a world with oscar award winner DOJA CAT?)

I have to agree with you. I was angry and sad with the ending, not surprised. I also felt like it was both the conclusion that fit with the rape culture the film was depicting, but also the only possible end for the specific character, herself. For her to be so full of hurt and so damaged by her experiences, and to also be pursuing the form of justice that she was, I couldn't really see her getting a "happy ending" not matter the outcome. I think that's the great thing about this movie, it really brings the message that some things are so horrific that they change people forever. Every survivor will not have this story, obviously, and a crucial part of their moving forward is crafting their own narrative, but I feel like this movie is most effective in demonstrating the damage perpetrators and enablers can do, and how they are able to rationalize and justify it.

There's a scene in His House where he goes to the very nice and helpful well meaning white case worker and asks to be moved to a new house only to have it explained in the cruelist bureaucratic terms that he'll be labeled as having trouble assimilating. It one of the realest and scariest moments I've ever seen in a horror movie.

Tenet had a great idea, but the movie was too long and exhausting imo. The main actor had almost no emotions. But Robert Pattinson was outstanding, he carried the whole movie. I'm a big Nolan Fan, but i have to admit that Tenet was the first Nolan movie, I had to torment myself to get through the movie. Great idea, but terrible implementation and execution

*promising young woman spoiler alert* *also this comment ended up being longer than I thought, sorry!* The director of PYW stated that originally the ending she had in mind involved Cassie surviving, but scrapped it because she knew that that would just not be realistic. At the end of the day, Cassie was putting herself in an incredibly dangerous situation. She was in the middle of the woods with a large group of men who all had the strength to overpower her (as seen in her death scene), it's almost obvious that something was going to happen to her. The ending gave us one last gut punch of a message, by showing us what realistically happens when an average woman enters a situation like that (as opposed to what happens in other female revenge movies), while also giving us a satisfying scene where the bad guy finally get arrested for his crimes. And that's what I love about it. The way I see it, the ending reminds the audience of the sad truth of the effects sexual assault and violence against women can have on their victims, and how common their sad endings are, but then immediately after shows us that things can change, and we can start bringing justice to said victims, by listening to women and working to change the system (this bit is represented by the lawyer who, after realising the error of his ways, follows through with his apologies by helping Cassie when she needed him).

See I read about this too, and to be honest that's what kind of ruined things for me. If the goal is to deliver a grim, realistic ending to the movie then the least you can do is stick to it! Make the audience sit in that feeling. But instead they gave Cassie one last gotcha from the afterlife moment that trends closer to a big Hollywood finish, in my opinion. I felt that the ending was really uneven. It didn't commit completely to realism OR catharsis, but gave us some of each. Also, the concept of a happy ending that hinges on putting faith in the cops almost feels like a complete joke (especially given the statistics surrounding how many cases of rape/sexual assault get dismissed). Obviously no one can have an objective view of this movie, and I totally understand and respect people who liked it and felt vindicated/empowered/triumphant watching it. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. Casting and aesthetics were perfect though!

Yeah but its not just a parasocial relationship. Theres youtubers out there that I‘ve been watching for years and who I care for very little. Serge here was instantly my favourite movie youtuber after I watched one of his videos for the first time. The actual word y‘all are looking for is genuine. Because thats the vibe I instantly get when I tune into this channel. A genuine guy sharing his passion with us.

i’m so glad to see somebody talking about his house! i don’t think i’ve ever been so genuinely horrified at a film before. the way it uses horror as a device to communicate its themes rather than exploiting the trauma the characters go through for cheap scares is so rare and so well done.

Agreed. The imagary was so precise - most horror movies it feels like they were just "what would be some gnarly shit to jump out at you in the dark?" while here it's all personal to them.

You are seriously one of my favorite critics ever. I just saw one critic's review of Promising Young Woman and it was literally, "I watched the first few minutes then just started skipping through and eventually turned it off." And then felt he can comment on the ending. I like that, unlike this critic, you actually give each film a fair and objective chance while still bringing something personal and honest to each review.

Honestly, that's the way it is with most critics. If they don't like the movie that's fine, but they shouldn’t just skim it and then assume they've consumed the entire piece.

I saw Tenet in theaters. Renting out a while theater in a suburb during Covid is surprisingly cheap and my wife did that for my 40th birthday. She likes spy thrillers, I like the metaphysics of time. Between the two of us, we enjoyed it. That said, encouraging people to see it in theaters, that was terrible and Nolan was rightly criticized for it.

Also *Promising Young Woman* - I know it was quite dissatisfying to see what happened to Cassie. But the ultimate result uses the revenge trope to highlight the issues in how we talk about rape & sexual assault. Yes, if Cassie had not put herself in that situation, she would not have been harmed, but at the same time-all her attacker had to do was admit his own wrongdoings and take responsibility for them. But because he refused and we have a system that constantly makes excuses for male attackers the same way they would for this one, the only way to bring him to justice was to literally have him arrested.

"You're a good kitty who does bad things!", you know that's a good cat parent right there, refusing to ascribe the word "bad" as intrinsic to the kitty no matter what kind of hell they raise :>

I feel like Promising Young Woman is in a fight with its marketing department. Serge is absolutely right that movies don't need to - and shouldn't be asked to - provide moral clarity to the audience. The trouble is, the Oscar push for the movie has been full of "free screenings to sexual assault survivors" and "interviews with the writer/director about how revenge is distasteful" and "ad copy insisting that this movie is a feminist triumph." If viewers weren't being told so frequently and loudly that they should view the movie as moral lesson that they're good people for enjoying, a lot of the backlash would probably be a lot more muted.

But the sad fact is, the majority of people want convenience. I work in a Library that houses over 10k DVDs. Every year less and less physical DVDs are checked out. Really the only ones that go out are the new releases or TV series. Physical Media wont ever go away, but it's nowhere near as popular as Convenience.

I think promising young woman's ending is still a critique against the sistem, specially if you keep in mind all the people who knew what happened to nina and did nothing. Every single one of them could go to the police,but the only time the cops actually do something is when they're literally told about Cassie's possible murder, which is basically saying that the sistem only works once it's too late. A physical place that you can still go to for movies, that usually has a pretty eclectic selection, is your local library. The only downside is that you have to wait a while for new releases, but not really any longer than you had to wait at Blockbuster.

Birds of Prey has literally been one of my biggest sources of joy this past year. It was the last movie I saw in theaters before quarantine. I watch it at least once a month. It just makes me so happy. Seeing all the negative reviews it got made me feel ashamed for my love of it. But seeing your video on it validated and my love. Thank you so much for that!

2:23 yeah, that was a great thing about Blockbuster. That and realizing that they really did not know that just because something is animated didn't mean it belong in the kids section. And then we got Anime that was next to that.

Spoilers for the end of Promising Young Woman: I thought the ending was great. Firstly, I think it made the movie into a true tragedy ( in the classic Greek sense) as opposed to a melodrama. Some things can’t be set right and both Cassie and Nina’s fates were doomed that night at Forrest. Second, it realistically shows that if you are constantly opening yourself up to violence, eventually you won’t be able to escape it. Finally, the scene were Joe comforts Al after he finds “ the stripper” dead is the peak of the writing in this movie. As Joe tells Al that it’s not his fault, he’s going to be okay, he doesn’t deserve this, he is perfectly mimicking what survivors of rape SHOULD hear, but don’t. The supportive shoulder to cry on the next morning is reserved in society for predators, not their victims

I pondered it for a moment, and knew they were impatiently waiting for me to answer. I said, "Probably my favorite movie I've seen recently was 21 Grams." The interviewer said, "I've never heard of it." I did not get hired.

Promising Young Woman is a film that just really hurts me, but in all the right ways. As someone who has experienced this trauma, knows others who have also, the ending was one that was both devastating but so accurate that made it even more painful. Justice is rarely gained without further violence against women and this film shows the realities of that in a cruel and painful picture - Carey Mulligan and Director Emerald Fennell did an incredible job

So happy you've put Proxima on your list! I love family-centric space dramas but was reluctant to watch it because of the underwhelming reception.
