while i can understand form a storytelling standpoint why people like split, as a person who has spent ages studying dissociative identity disorder and someone who passionately advocates against the demonization of people with the disorder, i can't help but be disgusted by split. it reiterates the completely incorrect stereotype that multiples (people with multiple personalities) are inherently dangerous or murderers. this couldn't be farther form the truth. dissociative identity disorder (or DID) is developed because of childhood trauma and is caused by the brain attempting to protect the child from the trauma by dissociating the child before the traumatic event from the child after it, thus splitting the personality into multiple ones that later develop into fully fleshed out people in their own right. this can happen again a seemingly infinite amount of times as the multiple's life goes on as more traumatic or even just stressful and anxiety inducing events happen. the only person a part or altar (alternate personality) would ever harm is another altar in the same system, sometimes unintentionally through self harm. it wouldn't even make sense for an altar to be a murderer, and the general public only knows about DID through film, which increases violence against them and keeps people experiencing the symptoms from seeking help. i could say a lot more about DID but this comment is long enough already, they're just people trying to live their lives. i figured i'd let people with DID explain for themselves, as it is my job not to speak for or over them but to project their voices. here are just a few great youtube channels of people with DID: kzread.info/dron/8JDIEFbQejP-meo1OwI0DA.html kzread.info/dron/CkrAkJop-j4oAQb0sHBYrw.html kzread.info/dron/6kFD5xIFvWyLlytv5pTR1w.html kzread.info/dron/1GhA-4qfuIDCWfdoE3XHgg.html

Thank you for saying this! I typed a similar comment about the issues with split's depiction of D.I.D, and I'm really glad to see yours too! It saddened me to even see the trailer for the film tbh.. I'm so tired of the stigmatizing and ignorant tropes related to these disorders in media. Thank you for bringing it up here!

Yes I was hoping someone would make this point here! Split really didn't sit well with me. It's hard to believe (But I guess not because Hollywood is all about drama and profits) that cinema would push this offensively inaccurate stigma against a harmless condition born from trauma and self defense.

Check out Shigofumi. Its an anime that depicts DID in a fantasy setting, and theres only one altar, but it actually depicts it in a way that doesnt villify the altar or the original (uh person? personality?) identity. And the trauma is...idk insinuated? It does show the past trauma but its less overtly sexual, possibley less triggering. I dont have any experience or know anyone with DID so if theres inaccuracies, im sorry. But i did highly enjoy it. And i enjoyed split. I think, up until the hijacking and villianizing, it was pretty down to earth.

The Last Jedi, i'd say it's weirdly enough, was the biggest controversial movie of 2017. I haven't seen it yet, so I dont know how I feel about it. But everytime I see someone say they like it, people are instantly on the attack. And everyone who doesn't like it, dislikes it with a hate so strong that you'd think the movie killed their parents. Even weirder now are the people who suddenly claim the prequels are the best thing ever BECAUSE of this movie, despite being pretty universally panned for years. It's so bizarre to watch all this ridiculousness over a Star Wars movie.

Came here from your Star Wars video, so glad you liked the last Jedi! It’s one of my favorites of the series. Really compelling story telling in my opinion and loved how unexpected it was.

Still haven't seen coco, but i was still brought to tears by your summary/review of it. Really interesting picks, loved the video.

I think it's really important to point out that the film Split had many people in the disabled community like myself (in particular, those who have Dissociative Identity Disorder) very upset and concerned with the overused and completely misinformed trope of using mental disorders as a basis for villainy. The misconception that people with DID/DIPD are a potential danger/risk to others is a huge reason for the massive stigma that they face, sometimes deterring them from seeking the care, support, and visibility they need and deserve. Stereotypes of these disorders being largely dangerous (which is steeped in ignorance about them) is still used bountifully as a plot device in media. Those with DID are often misunderstood as having alters that are more likely than the average person to be violent, hostile, or manipulative/abusive. In reality, alters often surface as a result of extreme trauma experienced by their host, and simply exist to serve the purpose of protecting that host from what threatens to harm them in future. Basically I want to bring light to the fact that, although Split may be a movie that some people may have enjoyed watching (most notably those who don't have these kinds of illnesses..) it created and added to a lot of toxic stereotyping in media that those with Dissociative Identity (Personality) Disorder (and even other personality disorders) continue to grapple with and fight on a daily basis. In a world where there is still so much misunderstanding and ignorance about these kinds of disorders, it is harmful to create a story where DID/alters are used to depict violence and horror, especially because there is rarely (if ever?) any alternatives to these stereotypes in film... Admittedly, I haven't seen the full film (my cousin has DIPD and I have multiple mental illnesses, and so I didn't feel I could stomach watching the entire thing...) But I wish writers would come up with another way to present a scary character while delivering the messages and creativity they were going for, without relying on tired ableist tropes of "crazy person being crazy and therefore dangerous" over and over again. :/

I came here , because of your videos about feminist and sexist tropes and because I really feel like you care about issues of representation for minority and you asked for comments, if your videos are not inclusive, here's a head-up about split. It's terrible representation for people with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Being portrayed as horror show monsters from "Psycho" to "Split" makes everyday life for people with DID so much harder than necessary. I have not seen "Split", maybe there are some worthwhile aspects, but I believe you should at least mention in what ways it's problematic. So Shyamalan has been creating super-disquieting depictions of disabilities for basically his entire career: osteogenesis imperfecta in "Unbreakable," autism in "The Village," sundown syndrome in "The Visit," and D.I.D. in "Split." In all four cases, not only is it the villain who has the disorder/condition, it's specifically BECAUSE of the condition that they become villains! This has NOT gone unnoticed by me. I had originally scripted something about it, but I felt I couldn't address the issue properly in the limited time allowed. But it's definitely super-problematic. For what it's worth: I never got the impression from any of Shyamalan's films that they were supposed to be REALISTIC depictions of any of the conditions. In fact, something that everyone seems to agree on is that "people with these disorders don't actually ACT like this." So, if anything, I wish Shyamalan would stop using real-world medical terms to try and explain his characters' obviously-fictitious behavior.

I avoided split bc of it's villainization of people with dissociative identity disorder. And my friend who actually has the disorder pointed out to me how harmful that movie could be. However, after hearing your summary I think the movie could really only be negatively impactful if someone only watched the trailer because it isn't clear that he's super human but anyways loved this video and now I got some movies to watch

Yeah, Shyamalan has a terrible track-record when it comes to villains who happen to have debilitating physical and mental ailments -- osteogenesis imperfecta in "Unbreakable," dissociative identity disorder in "Split," and good old-fashioned autism in "The Village." It's... something I'm still trying to square with. The best explanation I've got right now is that none of his films seem to want to present clinically-accurate portrayals of these illnesses. He exaggerates the symptoms until we get something that's clearly fiction. Fine and dandy? No. Malevolent? Also no.

May S Hm, I don’t see how him being super human changes how it becomes received. The Gems in Steven Universe may be aliens but their technical genderless selves is hugely welcoming for non binary individuals and it gives cis people a way to grasp gender which they are unfamiliar with. Just an example. I don’t trust the common folk to not associate a super human power with the actual real life mental illness. Especially when society still doesn’t understand what DID even is.

Coco is really important for me. Maybe it's just because I'm sick and on medicine, but thinking of it makes me cry. The tradition of music was erased out of spite in this family. But when it was embraced, it gave way to a better understanding of heritage and love. It's an important film in America especially. Mexicans are told to leave and erase and Americanize themselves. As a Mexican-American whose life is very Americanized, that struck home. I feel a very big disconnect to my Mexican roots. So seeing the embrace of culture was really something.

Fuck, I almost cried during that last clip of Coco, and I haven't even seen the movie yet.

I both kinda wish I'd avoided the twist you mentioned of Colossal but now I REALLY want to see the movie because of it. (Conflicted!) I got a bunch of trailers for it AFTER it left the theaters in Miami. It was such BS. Yay for this list ~ And since we're talking about Shape of Water, I just remembered someone on another video (Lindsay Ellis's latest one) said we should totally get reboots of all the classic movie monsters as Guillermo del Toro-style romances. It's be 1000x better than the Dark Universe attempts.

I interned in LA for two summers back in '09 and '10. One of the highlights was when I assembled a packet of research for "Cowboys & Aliens." It was strictly an office-job, though. Not like I was holding a boom pole on set or anything. After I graduated from film school, I settled in Chicago because I couldn't find work in either my hometown or LA. I sent some scripts to some people I knew in LA -- one of which placed in the top 15% of the Nichol Fellowship -- but that "technique" wasn't leading anywhere, so I decided to write and direct my own independent film in 2016. I premiered it on my channel in 2017. Those are the broad strokes of my "career" up until this point. Thank you for your support!

My mom and I had exactly the same reaction during Coco! Literally sobbing in the theater trying not to look weird in front of the dry eyed parents all around us. Hahaha! Loved it ☺

Love the video but, just mentioning the caption for Last jedi is Chinese not Japanese. I understand as the 2 language is very similar in using similar characters.

I'm so glad to see a video by someone who really enjoyed TLJ. And that you also think it fixed the issues with TFA. It's clearly such a good film and I'm convinced that most of the hate is due to sexism. Sure, the vice admiral may not have had the best leadership style - and if she'd been a male character no one would have been as upset by this. There are plenty of good reasons why she wouldn't tell Poe her plan. He just got lots of their pilots killed and lost all their bombers. Some could well be the Vice Admiral's friends. The General's last act was to demote him. Why would anyone be inclined to tell this person anything?

My (minor) beef with the Vice Admiral storyline is that they tried to keep the whole plan secret from the audience as well as Poe. I'm fine with them leaving Poe in the dark, but I wish they had let the audience in on her thought-process a bit more. Otherwise it's just disorienting. At least it was for me. Anyway, these are the sorts of things that will be fixed on subsequent re-watches -- of which there will be many! And yes, I also suspect prejudice might have something to do with the level of hate directed at The Last Jedi. I don't usually like running to that explanation so quickly, but the fact that so many Last Jedi critics REFUSE to articulate any specific complaints makes me suspicious. Like... you know at least ONE of these fanboys is fuming because he hasn't gotten any gold bikinis or ripped white jumpsuits yet.

A friend pointed out that it's fun to imagine Ray Kroc in The Founder is the spiritual prequel to Beetlejuice. I still haven't seen The Founder yet, but from the clips I could see his point.

Finally somone who appreciates guardians vol 2 as much as I do. Well maybe more but its still top 5 mcu.

Seeing a lot of hate (or undeserved love) for the Last Jedi. Dont get it really. The film was objectively better than Force Awakens in pretty much every way. The problem with it was that it was kind of average. The visual direction was great - so much of the movie was so beautifuland its great to see that thats something not to worry about. Its issues lie in the failure to reach the huge potential it had. Instead of going down an interesting path with the main characters (Ray and Ren), it does... exactly what everyone expected them to do from the offset. It brings in actively laughable scenes like Leia floating in space and kills off/doesnt kill off characters at the most inappropriate/appropriate moments respectively. It takes a character from the foreground (Finn) and stuffs him into a tertiary story that is completely irrelevant to the movie at large. Whole sections of that film could be cut out and the narrative wouldnt change in the slightest, not to mention that some plot elements are only there because the plot dictated it, not because the character in their world would ever logically act that way. Contrary to most people - I think luke was handled fine for the most part. Just that a lot of the other characters werent. Poe's story would have been over in about 5 minutes if the admiral character acted like a real human being and shared her intentions with the high command and important personnel. Finn and... the new girls (who was she and why was she there?) story is pointless. It doesnt need to exist, it takes too long and once again it completely fails at making Cpt Phasma actually seem a threat. The film was fun. Probably my favourite after Ep 4 and 5. It just doesnt really have a high bar to beat in terms of star wars movies.

I barely came back to this after finally watching Colossal and not having to skip the spoilers. Goooooood ass movie, so glad I didn't watch the spoilers before the movie. What an interesting film.

I don't know why, whenever I hear the sound effects of action movies, I always feel like falling asleep...

After hearing your reaction to Coco (2017) I'm very curious of how you feel about The Book of Life (2014). I found it to be a beautiful film which sounds like it has a very similar theme and setting to Coco. In saying that I Haven't seen Coco yet, I'll have to watch it tonight.

Interesting list there considering most of these were released in 2016, but even my list has 2016 films like Her and Manchester By The Sea. Also I think del Toro has the best director category in the bag, shame I really wanted Nolan to win it for Dunkirk but the Shape of Water was truly magical.

Yeah, 4 of the films on my list technically premiered in 2016 (Colossal, The Founder, Split, Lady Macbeth), but if I had absolutely NO way of seeing any given film until 2017, then THAT'S the year it counts for, as far as I'm concerned.

I have a theory that Del Toro fell asleep watching The Seven Year Itch and that line about the Creature from the Black Lagoon just wanted to be needed and wanted and loved. Maybe. I donno.

Surprised to not see Thor:Ragnarok here. Taika is such a treasure, and the way he took a terrible franchise and made it great is legendary.

Colossal is a movie is still think about to this day. How it subverts the expectations one has and how it serves as an allegory about misogyny , self hatred and people who thus can't cope with happiness or success of others. I wonder why you would have liked the Jason Sudeikis plot twist revealed on the trailer. I just like when movies knock me down and shatter all I previously thought about it.

I saw 7 of your top 10, but only 2 ended up on my list. "Molly's Game" and "Get Out". My other picks: "The Big Sick", "Spider-Man Homecoming", "Hidden Figures", "Dunkirk", "Baby Driver", "The Lego Batman Movie", "120 BPM" and "Billy Lynn's long halftime walk". Some of them might have premiered already 2016 in the US, but did in my area 2017. There is one movie on your list, I actually didn't consider especially watchable. "Split". It was mildly entertaining for me, because it felt uneven and predictable to me. Not uncertain at all. Another movie I sadly disagree with you on is "Colossal". I liked the idea behind it, but disliked how the situations were created and the rules of this supernatural phenomenon. I don't remember what else I disliked, but I was kind of disappointed after watching it in the theatre. "I Tonya" premiered here a lot later and might be on my best of 2018 list. :) I'm looking forward to checking out "Lady MacBeth", "Coco" and "The Founder".

Enjoyed the film, agreed with the movies I've seen. Will now chase down the others.

Im here to defend Split as someone who suffers with mental illness. :) I absolutely love this channel especially the Candyman and Jaws knockoff videos! You really speak thoughtfully about your topics and it saddens me to see so many people talk down to you for enjoying a movie. Split (and Glass) are some of the more empathetic portrayals of people who survive trauma ive ever seen. I dont know M Night's true intention, but i do not believe he ever wanted to upset us who experience these things in real life. The whole message of the trilogy was to empower those of us who have been through pain and fight to become stronger from it. The two leads in Split ( Casey and Kevin ) are both great examples of how different people will process abuse. Some harm themselves, and some harm others. I really dislike the whole "Mentally ill people are not violent!" message people are trying to spread because that is not always true. We are just as capable as anyone else of being violent. We are not "only victims." Trying to boycott movies because we dont get the message or believe them to be problematic mirrors the attitude of "fear what you dont understand." This is something those of us with mental illnesses and disabilities have been hurt by for a long time. It's not the movies that make people afraid of us, its something that exists in people already that tells them to fear the unknown. Split honestly gave me the language i needed to actually start seeking help and getting treatment. I related to the characters struggles and wanted to see them find peace, so, i started on my own journey to find my happy ending. I have experienced judgement and rejection for being open about my mental health, but never physical violence. People often dont believe that others live in my head with me, but i accept that not everyone thinks this sort of thing is real. If anyone can show me examples of people being harmed as a direct result of Split, thats one thing, but i have not heard of someone being beaten or bullied severely by people who watched Split and wanted to hurt someone with D.I.D because of it. Please keep up the great videos!

kukalakana I watched Please Stand By last year. When she has the meltdown near the start of the film, when she's with her sister, was waaaaay to real. I have asperger's, though not as severe as in the movie, and I started crying. I don't cry at movies. It was one hell of a way to spend a birthday.

I wonder if I'm the only one that thinks that The Shape of Water was really about the Russian scientist and the romance plot was the plot hook that was supposed to intrigue the audience into watching the movie - the guy's got a complete story arc about trying to preserve a rarity of the natural world and things end tragically for him, but it still feels true and tense, while the romance is kinda flashy and the miraculous happy end feels a bit too convenient. Then again, Del Toro is hardly a stranger to parallel stories in a movie, considering Pan's Labyrinth.

😩 I haven't seen half of them... 😧 Now to wait for a DVD release... Crap...

Other than the Star Wars one I agree to the list, the new Star Wars movies, sure, they look good, is entertaining but they also murder the characters of what they are/was and breaks the past films in too many ways for me to look past them.

I’d prefer to message this just to you, rather than all of humanity for all of the rest of time. But hey, public discussion, so here goes. Second Service is one of my favourite films last year. And in my top 10, but then I didn’t see many, I saw about 5. Also, it was on KZread! I could have stopped watching this $5K film at any point in time. But I didn’t. Why? Because I enjoyed it. In fact, I liked Second Service more than Dunkirk. Yeah, you read that correctly. Fictional characters decorating a real historic event, annoying music in places, please. I can’t wait until Avatar 2 comes out, a true master filmmaker. And…, breath. I also preferred Star Wars 8 over 7: wonderfully engaging story and storytelling. Sorkin. I love him. But mostly his long arc TV work (ie. love: American Pres., West Wing, Newsroom, Moneyball) and I hate his recent movies of egotistical "people" (Social Network, and haven’t seen Jobs). Chastain as best deliver of Sorkin? WTF. You really need to rewatch The West Wing and watch Newsroom. The Northwestern speech??? America is not the greatest country in the world, anymore?? Which, btw, is a reference to the opening of The American President. Always love your “fast forward to this time to avoid spoiler”. Michael Keaton: have you seen Branagh’s Much Ado About Nothing? Thank you so much for all the praise! I’m unspeakably pleased to hear that people are genuinely enjoying “Second Service.” I wasn’t crazy about “Dunkirk,” but Nolan is still one of my favorite filmmakers, so for anyone to compare me favorably to anything he’s done is extremely flattering. And you’re right. I *DO* need to re-watch “The West Wing.”

I enjoy TWW more with each viewing: I know the characters at the start, I know where they're going, and as usual I notice subtlety, detail and nuance each time.

I was a complete mess watching Coco! I had the theater to myself, so I did allll the ugly crying lol

It has been years since i watched a movie. Cinema theatres in my country are a pathetic thing..anyway, and i ve come to prefer listening to audiobooks rather than assault my eyes with visuels that overwelm my senses and yet deliver rarely a strong message. It s the satisfaction of stuffing yourself with hypercalories then the emptiness and guilt afterward :p ENFIN BREF. Warching this video, i may have found my long lost taste for movies ..i even wish for a movie buddy to enjoy the experience with, share and discuss it.

I couldn't spark to that one. I thought it was pretty heavy-handed, and the whole premise kinda shot itself in the foot. Is it REALLY that big a deal if replicants can reproduce? Doesn't that make them... EXACTLY... like people? Like, in EVERY way that matters? It dissolves any attempt at a metaphor. For me, anyway. It's also why I don't think Rick Deckard is a replicant (in my own headcanon, anyway). If EVERYONE is a replicant, then everyone MIGHT AS WELL be human.

I think it was more about how the humans never intended them to become human, they are a slave force first and foremost and them becoming more human makes having them as slaves a liability in so many ways. I think how all of this affects the main character is really interesting and the 3rd act in general gave some great emotional payoff esspecially the end where in spite of all of the ways he had been disappointed and beaten he still wanted to do the kind thing out of his own volition. In short the characters and the world were good enough for me to suspend my disbelief every step of the way.

People are scared that the ones they consider "lesser" could get on their level. As a general rule. Is it the majority ? Not always. I'm saying that with the point of view of an LGBT person. Why was same sex marriage so hard to get? Because it would put married gay people on the same level as married straight people, and for some this is unacceptable. Why are so many people protesting about adoption or different ways of having a child for gay parents ? Because it would put them on the same level as straight ones and people are afraid of that. Heck, recently a trans woman was able to breast feed and there were quite a lot of people that were shouting how "unnatural" and "disgusting" that was. Why ? She's a woman with fonctionning breasts ? Why shouldn't she be able to ? But people are afraid of made up consequences of that. Replicants being able to give birth is a big deal. Because they were nothing but slaves, servants, sub humans. Giving them that power make them human in almost every sense of the word. And humans are afraid of that because they lose one more way to exert power over them. "In the eyes of the priviledged, equality feels like oppresion"

Interesting choice of movies, too bad so much of the list was taken up by franchise productions.

so disappointed to see you praise Split in this video. the whole movie is just a perpetuation of "mental health disorders as the basis for horror movies" which just further propagates ableism throughout common culture. people with DID have been demonized for decades because of movies like split, and will continue to be until the film industry stops taking mental health issues as ideas for horror stories.

is it weird that i enjoy horror movies like this? Like i have depression which doesnt tend to be something demonized, and ive seen a few movies horror and not that dont demonize the mental illness that is involved. But i enjoy the fear it plays on. Of being mentally ill, of dealing with someone with mental illness that you arent familiar with, that are at a breaking point. I think there should be more movies out there that dont demonize mental illness, that keep it real, but i still highly enjoy movies like this. And i really like that he wasnt just a mentally ill murderer. There was some obviously unrealistic stuff inserted in there that made it obvious that this was a fantasy not a reality near the end. So the association with him being mentally ill flies out the window as source of the evil in real life. And yes i know people are stupid and would ignore that. But as a standalone movie i think it was good. In the spectrum of "crazy people are evil" series of movies, its shitty.

I hated "Split." The acting by the protagonist was incredible. But I didn't like how it punished "bad girls" (which seemed to equal girls who act "sexy" and confident) and spares the last female character only when it's revealed that she's suffered enough to inflict terrible wounds on herself.)

Coldcrashpictures -- The movie "Get Out" is a comedy for people who are not white. The comedy is in seeing a coloured man - who knows better - wasting his time and stressing his mind with white people who do not want to cease being racist and who do not want to transcend being racist, but do want racial-trophy "friends" to fuck and display at cocktail parties; in the film, the two parts of racism are: the honest-racist conservative and the the fake-liberal racist. The film is very true to life for human beings.

I hated star wars, but I loved much of the others, specially get out, colossal and shape of water. Get out was so creepy, unnerving and scary it was fucking awesome and real. Now more than ever I think it resonates, with the BLM movement and End Police Brutality, I mean, that's why people said "oh oh" when the police arrived. Lastly, I don't know why you keep on mentioning Lady in the water as a bad movie, I not only loved the movie for entertainment, I also loved it for it's story and structure. I wish you explained why it failed for you

I could appreciate "Thor: Ragnarok" for what it was, but I don't like how Marvel switches Loki from "mass-murderer" to "Benny Hill sketch" between films. I think they've managed to mine FAR more drama out of the "mass-murderer" angle.

Yeah...2 minutes in and I'm gonna have to just skip over The Last Jedi bit. I'm sincerely glad you liked it and I wouldn't want to take that away from anyone but I have serious issues with that movie, from continuity within the universe to the mishandling of my childhood heroes. For me, that movie pretty much ruined any and all excitement I felt about the Sequel Trilogy from The Force Awakens, and what makes it so much worse is that I've genuinely enjoyed all the other Disney era Star Wars movies that have been made... Edit: The last 3 movies on your list are perfectly placed, and Coco was nothing short of a masterpiece.

The very first one (Star Wars) put me way off. "The most subversive film"?! Star Wars is not about subversion. You could easily produce anthology films and TV series and books and .... which are subversive.

Wow. I really dig your channel. I wasn’t even going to hold your video about your inability to rank the Star Wars movies against you (not TOO much, anyway). But putting The Last Jedi on your top ten list...The only top ten list The Last Jedi should ever belong on is the Top ten WORST Star Wars movies of all time. And before you say, “That’s impossible” keep in mind that we already have “The Force Awakens”, “Solo”, and “The Last Jedi”. Throw in “The Star Wars Holiday Special” and the “Ewoks” Duology, and we’re than halfway there. Seriously though, putting The Last Jedi on you top ten list seriously damages your credibility.
