If you feel uncomfortable ranking films just put them in alphabetical order or any other superfluous order. The main thing is that we hear your perspectives on the films that most resonated with you within the year. The order doesn't really matter, at least for me.

I forgot it's even ranked half time until it says number one and I'm instantly offended and then forget its ranked again because I'm too busy trying to figure out how I'm going to rent all these movies and which one to start with. Oh wait they are conveniently ranked. I guess I just start with 1 and then continue through to 10, possibly skipping the ones I've already seen.

Out of context, meaning I havent seen the movie yet thats one of the two things I thought seeing it. One that he was taking in that he could do nothing to save him, it's literally slipped through his fingers. And then that he was waiting to go too. I think partially because there was a moment, a pose where the dissolved spider dust is behind him and that would have been the cinematic moment they would have chosen for his hands to start dissolving and for his dust to join with spidey's dust. And then it passes and sort of relaxes and you realize that he was expecting it as much as you were.

"Heroes aren't born in the face of victory, but in the face of defeat." Damn.

Anti-monarchism is a bold stance to take, in 2019. Hope you're ready for the backlash!

@@coldcrashpictures While I generally agree with you on hereditary monarch, the idea of rulers have 'always' been under-qualify is somewhat untrue. While most ruler tend not to actually live up to their reputation, some do even if rare. And then there are those who don't have much of a reputation, mainly because nothing much tend to happen under their reign (which can be a good thing). The bad thing about hereditary monarch is ultimately the lack of choice, which frankly isn't limited to monarch. I don't see current US elections being plentiful in choices either.

I suddenly have a weird mashup movie in my head of all these movies because of the one about the two girls fighting for the queens affections. Theres some kind of narrative there that I cant quite navigate. Like it's a song rather than a movie.

The way you analyzed Infinity War was amazing!

I saw Eighth Grade in 2018 when I was the same age as the main character of the film which seems to be a unique experience given that most of the films fans are in their 20s. It was probably one of if not the most impactful films I had seen at the time just because of the fact that you barely ever see serious coming of age stories about pre/younger teens without them being over the top or overly comedic

Not even lying but "on home video" made me flashback to the nineties.

Always great to see a new video from you! I have a hard time keeping up with new releases because it feels like there are so many movies coming out all the time. This was a great list. A couple of these I hadn't heard of, and I only actually saw 2 of these movies. You really did get me more interested in watching several of these that I haven't seen yet. 8th grade definitely looks like awkward fun reminding me of my own middle school experience, but set in the world of the students I teach now

I watched Buster Scruggs recently, didn’t think much of it but found myself thinking about the stories so much. I couldn’t get some of them outta my head.

Blindspotting getting recognition honestly makes me so happy. It has some of my favorite people who worked really hard on it, and it’s really well done. I just love it a lot; it’s one of my favorites.

Big fan since you listed Rose and Charlie from The African Queen in your favorite on-screen couples video while *also* selling the movie brilliantly to new viewers. (I'm always trying to get my friends to watch that one) Anyway, I love how carefully you construct your scripts for your videos. You're able to share your subjective opinions in a way that's backed up by objective successes/failures of the film while also doing it in a fun, light-hearted, yet passionate way. I also like how you discuss the popular movies but don't spoil the less popular ones. Great format that I wish more reviewers used. Keep up the good work and looking forward to your next video!!! c:

Excellent video! Love your takes and pin-point precision vocabulary when discussing social and class issues in film. Did that naturally arise out of your experience watching film, living, and studying film, or did you also study those issues formally or informally?

I studied film in college, but honestly, the thing that helped me most was talking and listening to actual screenwriters. They have a way of articulating their opinions in ways that are hard to disagree with -- to "speak objectively about their own subjectivity." You can take their critiques and use them to actually WRITE BETTER FILMS. Whereas mainstream film criticism is basically just gussied-up platitudes: "the acting was great," "the writing was awesome," etc.

I love listening to people like William Goldman, Joss Whedon, David Mamet, Guinevere Turner, John Carpenter, Spike Lee, Robin Swicord, Brad Bird, and pretty much everyone featured in “Tales From the Script” talk about the craft... even though some of them *coughmametcough* have absolutely bonkers opinions about pretty much anything else *coughclimatechangedenialcough*

yeah its super interesting because thats actually the only good opinion of the movie that i've seen. these little character moments that he noticed require you to watch the other marvel movies to understand, and even he said he had to watch the movie twice to see them. so i dont necessarily think the movie is GOOD, because its character moments are going unseen by the majority of the audience. however, he said this list is his personal favorite and not 'the best movies' so its completely valid. i mean i personally dont care for it and im not going to rewatch it but i think its super cool that ppl can find things even in 'bad' films that resonate with them

I love how this was an amazing breakdown of infinity wars in disguise as a top 10 list. Seriously though I’m so glad to see annihilation on your list. That movie blew my mind in a lot of ways. The scenes in the lighthouse terrified me, the score unsettled me, and the imagery made me wanna watch it again. -spoiler alert- after watching it 4 times I am pretty convinced that when that creature touched Lena (and Kane) that it was an exchange of dna/soul. So in the end both of Lena and Kane where confused because they where no longer the same people. Just a theory though. Love you channel (even though it’s been a while) and I’m excited to watch the ones on your list I haven’t yet.

That’s a fair assessment-that the film humanizes a genocidal maniac. But it ALSO pushes an axe through his chest with impunity. I’ve got no problem with a good-faith attempt to understand the origins of such evil so long as you’re also ready to make sure he dies, dies, DIES a thousand brutal deaths.

How is he a fascist? How does The State or national identity show up in anything he does? In the film, he's a crusader, simple as that. In the comics he's more of a warlord general.

@@towermoss he ticks several boxes, most glaringly with how he puts himself on top of a self-established hirarchy, and commits genocide (half the population of the whole universe is quite a genocide I'd say). "Just a crucador, simple as that" sounds like you misunderstood not only what Thanos does, a fascist is, but also crucadors. On the first point, very helpful reading might be this essay by Umberto Eco, listing 14 points by which to define a fascist: interglacial.com/pub/text/Umberto_Eco_-_Eternal_Fascism.html You might recognize some of the boxes Thanos ticks off. I’ve been anticipating this list since December. This video made me love Infinity War more and gave me some good ammo the next time someone tries to shame me for seeing its excellence.

Super awesome list. Although something worth pointing out, the bear in Annihilation wasn't fully CGI. A lot of it was actually done with practical effects. There's a great video here on KZread showing how they made it.

Thanks to you I have a growing list of films to watch. Social media didn't exist when I was in the 8th grade, in fact I was well being an adult by the time Facebook launched. I'll watch the movie in the hope of maybe understanding some of the youth today.

Movies give me hope. I understand how you want them to be realistic, and how the sobering reality is something that you admire, and how escapism through movies is looked down on a lot, but what reality do you want to be portrayed? Your reality? My reality? The real one or the one in my perspective? I understand that life is not rainbows and unicorns as some movies describe it as. But sometimes, it doesn't go the way you expected it to go. It's very unique and very weird and very twisted and painful, but more often than not, it ends well anyway. It depends on what perspective you see it in. What energy and faith you have surrounding you. You could not believe in those things but I found them to be true. In my reality. I know that you see movies from the perspective of art, and we all have different tastes in art. Maybe you like the novelty of movies that show the actual status quo, rather than finding ways or creating solutions or ending on a note of hope. But without hope, no matter how redundant and old school it is, we all cease to exist. And hope is something that is contagious. Movies can trigger your brain and make you think without having to be horrifying or bleak or too sober. Without escapism, without diversion, I think we would go crazy. Time heals because we start to forget, and because we start to distract ourselves with other things. That's also a reality. And it's how real life usually is too. I read the news, but I honestly do not know how your brain is capable of watching the news dramatized. The horror is already felt and understood. Maybe it is made for those who have difficulties to sympathise. But usually within the horror, in reality, there's so much love and hope and tenderness and gentleness and even understanding sometimes. I've seen it presented so many times in real life and it was mind boggling but after a while I realised to not be surprising. Love and kindness exists all around us, and is usually only strengthened by tough situations. One beautiful example for that is Moonlight. I absolutely loved thag movie. It didn't follow any trope really, and ended on forgivness, change, resilience, vulnerability, and love. And that happens in real life more often than one would think. I really loved the dilemma that you presented both Thanos and T'chlla had. And I love how the two sides can be good but just with different perspectives. That usually really is how reality go. I have this philosophy that hard work, even if it was all invested in the wrong path and wound up useless, it's never worthless, and the universe will pay you back in whatever other path you go to. That has been a reality for me and many people I know. Friendship and goodness and love and hope is never a waste, one way or another. It all depends on your perspective.

'the revenge' might be one of my favorite films...ever? i've recently seen like every interview the director coralie fargeat did for the movie and she seems incredibly well-spoken, despite french obviously being her native language, and i loved the way she spoke at length about how the #metoo movement helped with her creation of the film and how she used the movie as a way to show how men of all types help to keep the patriarchy going, not just the 'alpha typical' dudes. the film really seems like a labor of love for her.

I am Portuguese, I live in Lisbon, Portugal, EU ... most of the movies that come to us are American ,,, I want to thank you for teaching me to look at cinema critically and, more than that, learn to look at the my life through the cinema

Annihilation is a masterpiece! (at least by my standards for what makes a masterpiece), I was so skeptical to the movie when it came up on netflix, but then, Lessons from the Screenplay had a video about it. HoBoy!, was I seduced to see the film! I do not regret it! (GOOSEBUMPS!)

I didn't watch Annihilation until mid 2019, but I resonate with his discussion points on the movie. I watched it with my boyfriend, who definitely didn't like it, and I was left unsure how I felt about it. At least until the horror of that dang bear wore off. "Green Hell" is a wonderful way to describe the setting; all the scenery and flora are disturbingly beautiful, but among the sparkle there are moments of sheer terror and grotesqueness.

Apparently, I hadn't watched this yet so thanks for letting me know about it on IG ! I was only so certain because I love and watch all your videos. Anyways, I wanted to talk about the movie Eighth Grade from the perspective of someone from Gen Z. I entered 6th grade in 2012 the same year Instagram really took off. My whole middle school experience (and high school for that matter) was intertwined by the existence and effect of social media. And being an awkward nerdy outcast dealing mental illnesses, Eighth Grade hit my experience right on the nose. I actually saw the film with my parents and I sat between them. One scene we'd be laughing so hard and the next bawling and all holding hands. I've never watched a film that was so cathartic for me. And the fact that one of my favorite comedians directed and wrote it! Anywho, I really fucking love that movie so thanks for speaking about it

Yay! Glad you found this one! "Eighth Grade" was sooooo good. One of the few Hollywood movies I've ever seen that used social media realistically. That's the difference between a Boomer writing it and a Millennial writing it, I guess. Can't wait to see what kinds of movies the Digital Natives (my favorite name for Gen Z) end up making!

I have no idea what the "Prophecy" bear is, but after the way the one in Annihilation scarred me for months after watching it, I'm rather tempted to investigate.

Duuuuude that's my favorite mug, even if I've had to replace it twice because of roommates putting it into the dishwasher like fools. Also a very good list here, though I personally would've found a way to squeeze Hereditary onto it. Best horror movie I've seen in years.

Completely agree about Infinity War, I don't understand how Black Panther got so much more praise, it was good but IW was absolutely amazing, nearly the level of Dark Knight in terms of taking comic book films where they've never been before.

Apart from this channel having great content that opens my eyes to other views of cinema. This channel also has one of the HOTTEST host in all of KZread. Lord knows I'm not the only one thirsting over them cute eyes 😍

Before I watch this i'll give some of my hot takes on these (if i didn't see one i won't mention it): Infinity War: Really smart movie, i wasn't even that enamored with the plot or characters or anything, just impressed with the logistics and creativity of it all. Black Panther: Wow killmonger's cool, but I'm not a fan of our hero's arc, seems like a watered down version of his amazingly written civil war arc. Blindspotting: I live near Oakland so it was very cool to see places I knew, but the movie put some comedy where it maybe shouldn't have been. Overall really great though. Eighth Grade: Not really a fan. It was very predictable for me and didn't do anything that new for me. I did like the dad, as it seems most did, but the children weren't that compelling for me. The Favourite: This is cynicism done very right. It seems hard to pull off, but they did it really well. Revenge: I'm not sure how qualified I am to review this and I'm not sure I fully understand the ramifications of the film, but that was harsh.

You should watch Cafarnaúm !!!!!!! I mean you MUST!

Green Book was actually a good film. Not every film or story has to be use one character in only a 'negative' way to use as a comparison or juxtaposition for the other. When I saw Green Book, I was sitting behind a group of 5 or 6 middle-aged and older black women who were really enjoying the film.

I honestly wished that Wanda would be the one to get rid of Thanos even if it seems that was too much to ask for. She went through too much... Her brother, then Vision... He really did take everything from her.

And how often do you see the big bad cry and still comes off as intimidating??

When I saw Infinity War, I had particularly bad time in my life. It just had everything. Loneliness, financial struggle, losing friends left and right, bad health, you name it. So I watched it, thinking its a bloody superhero movie, what could possibly go wrong. I guess I picked the wrong movie, because I felt like a dead horse after a long session of being kicked. I got legit mad at the film like it owed me something. Perhaps I have to rewatch it with more insight. If the anger ever subsides.

Ah, sorry. Superhero films definitely built an "escapist" reputation that Infinity War didn't quite follow. Me? That's exactly what I liked about it. But, yeah: if I'm craving escapism, I'd go for something like Thor.

@@coldcrashpictures Im actually really glad that super hero movies are making an effort to be a lot more than just an escapist film. But still, that did not saved me from the expectations that AT LEAST SOMETHING will go right. From my perspective I just watched a movie where the villain won, and the protagonists never stood a chance. Which was clear through the whole movie. It felt weird. Well at least they were consistent. Nothing quite puts me off like an all-powerfull villain unexpectedly losing to the power of friendship.
