The 2020 Dumpster Fire Watchlist

Фильм және анимация

2020 was a hell of a year. We may not have had our health, or our loved ones, or material support from our duly-elected representatives... but dammit if we didn't have some great films to re-watch!

@@coldcrashpictures I was just coming into the comments to say that. I was wondering if the line about not changing lives or creating community was ironic. Being a creator changes lives. You help me look at films from a new angle, in a way that is fresh from other online media reviewers. You honestly changed my look at Birds of Prey from thinking, "Its a good time" to "Yeah, this is subtle genius." Here's hoping this year is only a garbage can fire.

Also ducked into the comments to bolster this message. This channel introduces a few new concepts to me, but that's not why I show up. I don't have an echo chamber, I talk about the unnecessary nature of most of the gross unjustice going around and I get crickets, or warnings against communism. I come to this channel because I'm too damned exhausted to explain to people that I'm not a communist or a socialist and that nothing I want undermines the democratic republic I live in... and that yes, my job in the Game Industry absolutely impacts and has a responsibility to culture and political policy. I come here to not feel crazy and isolated. So thanks for continuing to put content out.

I’ve always watched It’s a Wonderful Life, or at least parts of it, every single Christmas I can remember. But I didn’t really understand it until 2020. My dad and I celebrated Christmas alone. No aunts, uncles, or cousins. Even in years when it’s been small, we’ve always had my brother and my grandma around. But my grandma died in October, and my brother was serving the last few days of his jail sentence. It was surreal, everything we tried to do just reminded us of everything we were missing. We wrapped up the evening watching It’s a Wonderful Life, and it was the first time in a while that either of us watched the whole thing. I can’t articulate it but there was a special kind of comfort there. Things are shitty. 2020 has, objectively, been the worst year ever for both of us-and that tops the year I dropped out of college twice and lost my uncle. But it’s too early to give up. It’s a Wonderful Life, if nothing else, is about hope. I’m not a hometown hero and I’m still stumbling my way through college but I’m still hopeful for tomorrow.

You have a keen analytical mind and the soul of a storyteller. You've made me re-evaluate several films and given me the opportunity to share your experience of the past year, all the while raising the bar on how compelling and moving a KZread video can be. In terms of realising your dreams and judging your achievements, take heart from how far you've come experimenting with this short video form (okay, not so short these days) from 'top ten annoying tropes' to what you can do now... and how much it means to the people who watch... and how palpably excited we are to see what will come next. And you're not just helping us think more substantively about the art we watch, you're changing the way we think about the world and our place in it. For example, watching this I became acutely aware that I may belong to the last generation that will live in anything approaching comfort. That's not right. The past year has made it all too apparent how urgent change has become. Well, I'd certainly be among the townspeople rushing to lend a helping hand to your George Bailey in his time of need, because you're one of the good ones. One of those people who enriches others' lives, merely by being there. Keep lassoing that moon. You're gonna catch it, in some form or another. How could you not?

For the love of God, please keep going. There's so many film analysis channels on youtube, but only a few speak so potently and personally to our present moment. I keep returning because you keep finding ways to make me think about movies I thought i'd long since rendered a verdict on in new ways. As someone who's felt crazy isolated and sometimes despondent in the past year, working remotely in a city I can't even enjoy or interact with, the best videos on here make me feel less alone and make me think too. That's valuable. If you ever think the work you do is unappreciated or even not worth it, I really hope you know that's not true.

hey coldcrash. you probably won’t see this but i want to agree with everyone in the comments. you have built a wonderful community and your work is absolutely amazing! i really hope you find success and i will keep supporting your work so you can eventually find that success. funnily enough, your recent videos have also aligned with what i’ve been learning in college (freshman lit major) and in the midst of intense burnout, your videos have reinvigorated me and provided a new perspective for me. all of them are also so calming that i fall asleep to them. i just really want to say i appreciate you for all of the work you have done and i am rooting for you 100% 💕

Bravo, this was the video I didn't realize I still needed for 2020's prolonged farewell processing. You sir are preaching to the choir in so many ways, thank you for your creativity and candor and for just putting out quality, thought provoking, engaging messages in a time when we're all still just trying to make it through to better times.

I hear your exhaustion - not just from this last year, but from the last decade. I'm grateful that you make videos anyway. This video in particular felt like having my head above water for awhile, a respite from the KZread firehose of candy content with which I have been numbing myself. I feel for you and with you and hope this year is better for all of us.

Your content means a lot to me, and I don't think what this video and its impact on me could be put into words. Everything I've been feeling in my life, all the panic, confusion, and resigned acceptance, and finally - finding a way to become reinvigorated by the bonds we have with others and their passion and creativity. #solidarityforever and cheers to this channel, a Bailey Brothers Building and Loan of your own.

I'm sorry you don't feel like you have a community. I know this pandemic is rough and it has exposed every failing that exists in our country and with our leadership. I feel your sorrow. I feel your pain. And instead of saying please don't stop, I want to say thank you. You have given me lessons and tools and philosophies that have changed the way that I have viewed the world and what change I want to affect on it. Even if your videos and just analyses of other movies, they teach and help others grow. I know you won't see this, but I hope you know that you have had a change and an effect. Dreams are weird. I hope you get to accomplish yours. But your videos are still awe inspiring and have helped me, a 21 year old with a major disability who is pushed by capitalism to stay in an in person position, working with students that don't wear fucking masks, to keep going and to try and have as big an effect on the world as you. Thank you :)

Watched this through the twitter link, but commenting for the algorithm. You're the best, and you will never know how many people you bring joy to doing what you do! there is someone out there that heard something that you said, and it helped them tighten the knot at the end of their rope. That's happened a lot this last year: I think I'm done, then I hear someone say something in that moment and I get my second wind. You've been one of those "someone"s. Take care!
