TiVO - The Best Streaming Device for Cord Cutters

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I show you what I consider the best streaming/recording device for cord cutters. I've had a TiVO for about 14 years now and it was great then and even better now with the integration of streaming services into their unified interface. I have 3 Chromecasts and a Roku, and TiVO is by far the superior experience. I don't even have my Roku connected anymore.
I have included links below to the various TiVO products and accessories discussed in this video along with any pertinent notes. The prices and information reflect what I am seeing on Amazon at this time but could change so please visit them for the final word. My goal was to organize things here in a way that would allow you to quickly compare apples-to-apples.

My Video on "How To Get Free HDTV Channels"
• How To Install An HDTV...
Notes: This represents TiVO's latest and greatest TiVO to date with the addition of 4K support. The hard drive capacity seems limited however (although there is a 1TB option), so if you don't have a burning need for 4K content at the moment, I would wait and see what TiVO releases down the road. It might be a moot point however, because 4K content is not a prevalent broadcast format so the only reason why this unit would make sense to you is if you are streaming 4K (from Netflix or Amazon Prime) and in that case it wouldn't take up any hard drive space anyway.
TiVo Roamio Pro HD

amzn.to/2IgKKuT

+ Price: $448.00
+ Monthly Subscription Cost: $14.99/month

+ Price: $113
+ Monthly Subscription Cost: None.
+ Maximum Supported Resolution: 1080p
Notes: Allows you to watch live TV, streaming services and your main TiVO's stored content on another TV. If you have more than one TV in your home you will want to pick one of these up for each additional TV. TV1 = Regular TiVO, TV2 = TiVO Mini, TV3 = TiVO Mini, etc.
MoCA Bridge
-----------
amzn.to/2Z7cadv
Notes: Only needed if you do not have a physical Ethernet Network between all your TiVOs and TiVO Minis AND your TiVO does not come with a MoCA Bridge Built-In. This will allow your TiVOs to use your existing coaxial cables to share video content across TiVO devices.

    This video has gotten me closer to cutting the cord. I have three tivos all with the lifetime subscription. I want to cut the cord but dont want to drop my tivo as I have invested a lot of money and time intot that service.. However I am so confused on the actual installation after I pull the cable cord out of my machine. I google for the installation process and get no where. At least with you video I can actually see what it should look like, Thank you. I will figure this out eventually. I look forward to that call to my cable company saying I am cancelling thier "service".

    Been an OTA and streaming junkie since 2001. Way back then I subscribed to Voom satellite for HD which was rad as there was so little HD content at the time outside of the OTA broadcasts, but the went belly up. Hasn't mattered as streaming has evolved. This device looks pretty great though to be perfectly honest I've never owned a DVR - I figure if I want to watch it bad enough, I'll watch it. Has never been an issue with so much content elsewhere though. I currently use a Roku TV and an XBox One, both connected to OTA, and between them I can watch, well anything. Cable and satellite is foreign to me now whenever I am in other people's homes... Heheh. I'm happy to see so many people jumping ship - FINALLY!

I currently don't have a Netflix, Hulu or any other movie type of App so that would add to my monthly bill but still cheaper then Cable. So, any ideas on how to get MSNBC without cable?

    Thanks for the review of Tivo's OTA recorder. We currently have a Tivo on our cable TV and of the HUNDREDS of available channels we pay $180 a month to watch only 5 or 6. BUT Although your OTA Tivo also has streaming like our current cable model, it DOES NOT RECORD STREAMING..or am I wrong? There are certain channels (Fox News and MSNBC, etc.) that are ONLY available on cable i.e. streaming. We record over half of what we watch due to our diverse schedules, so recording is a must. Cutting the cable removes the ability to select these channels, record them, and watch later sans commercials. Yes we have computers and tablets, but commercials are still imbedded in the content even after the orignal airing. Thanks for the review I just subscribed Rick C Sioux Falls, SD

    Hey Rick, I was in the same situation. This video is a bit old and my setup has changed. Despite being a longtime TiVo subscriber and fan, I am always drawn to technology that does things better. With that said, the NVidia Shield TV is the best streaming device on the market (and I have them all). I did a video on their previous model here (kzread.info/dash/bejne/i591q7uEXbzXc7w.html) so you can see what makes this device superior to everything else. Incidentally, there is a newer version of the NVidia Shield TV, it is called the NVidia Shield TV Pro (amzn.to/2SOFvrJ). Pair that with a $49.99/month subscription to KZread TV (tv.youtube.com/) and you have access to cable content and unlimited cloud recording. It's l like a TiVo on steroids. I just record everything now so whenever I am available to watch TV I can jump to the show and in most cases, skip through the commercials as well.

    If I could connect a streaming device to a DVD recorder and legally record content to discs from streaming as I can from my DirecTV’s DVR, I would cut the cord and probably transition to DirecTV’s live TV streaming service, but I haven’t found a streaming device that has this ability and I use several devices including Roku and Apple TV. Unfortunately, because of my work, I still need to record content to discs as I am a sports writer who primarily covers Boxing for my research, archive/private use. With everything going streaming this is an issue for me. Would you have any suggestions? Thanks.

    I have had a TiVo for 6 years now. Many people hear me drop the name, and they think they are obsolete. I try to tell them this is the Industry Stanard. The cable box of Hollywood. they laugh. I forgive them, I'm a geek. The cable boxes in my area are horrid. Too many ads in the GUI, and like 10 hours of HD. They charge $16 a month rental per box. The $15 is well worth it. I only need one, but there are options for all households. My last TiVo died, after 5 years. I was short on cash. I called TiVo, and they gave me a Roamio base refurb (step up for me) for $25.00! They told me it was because I've never missed a payment. I am grateful. It was a smart move for them, because they don't want to lose my service fees. This is a company I would invest in, if I had money. I believe they will become the box for all cable companies. They have a big name in Europe too.

I have 4 rooms needing TV, I'm a regular TV watcher, so streaming seems to be more of a hassle. Also when you were showing your savings, I noticed you didn't list any Internet fees. I have cable and cancelling my TV service will make my internet bill go up sky hi!!!

  • @TheMadHermit

    Thanks. You raise a good point. I pay the max for internet service to get the best service I can. Mine happens to be unlimited as a result. Of course now that net neutrality has been killed in the US this makes all this more complicated because ISPs can now legally block competing traffic to promote their own (e.g. AT&T can block or slowdown Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc. so they can sell you on their unthrottled DirectV service). Something else to consider.

  • @TheMadHermit

    @TheMadHermit

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Angie Butcher Being 100 miles away from major broadcasting cities could be problematic. You would have to find an antenna that could capture signals at that range. You don't generally get that many channels with OTA (I get something like 24-29). I make up for it by using streaming services like Amazon Prime, Netflix and HBONow (when Game Of Thrones is playing). If you still want access to live TV I would hold-off on switching to an OTA solution until you can find an antenna that can service your area. 100 miles is pushing the boundaries of what many of the antennas on the market can handle. Channel Master makes one (CM-5020) (amzn.to/2aSn39z) but I would suspect that the results would not be desirable being as remote as you are.

    +iSercules Just so it's clear, we are not talking about keeping your cable provider and replacing their box with a TiVO. We are talking about dumping your cable provider and replacing them with a TiVo box. So instead of paying (in my case) $112.71/month for cable. I am only paying $14.99/month for TiVo. This saves me $1,172.64/year. To me that's a significant savings.

    +Mark Schneider You absolutely need internet access if you are going to stream content and to download the channel guide information. I don't recommend using your phone as a hotspot for this purpose. You will need a proper internet connection. Preferably a physical Ethernet connection from your cable modem to the TiVO box.

    Thank you. I realize the need for the net. I was commenting that I didn't notice the cost for that when you were breaking down the cost of cutting the cable. Here's a funny thing; the cable companies are on top of the cable cutters. Now they are charging a fortune (compared to before) for just WiFi . And now that the cable is cut the need for more gigs is absolute because now everything is connected. Comcast wants $92.00 a month from me for the net. Thats at 200gbps but thats almost a basic need for me with all of the electronics working off of it ; cell phones, computers, Alexa etc. I sure can't wait until Amazon or Netflix gets their acts together and supplies internet access. :)

    OK, I understand what you are saying now. Yeah, I didn't factor in the cost for Internet Service because it is something I already pay for (whether I have cable/satellite TV or not so it's kind of a wash). And you are absolutely right that the cable companies understand that people are moving away from their ridiculously priced television packages for straight forwardly priced OTA and streaming services. That's why they have lobbied so hard to kill net neutrality. By having the ability to throttle traffic, they can control content, pick and choose winners and make content creators and consumers pay more for Internet Service.

    In your video, you left out a few hardware costs for the first year. You also need to buy an HDTV antenna, along with any cables you may need to make the whole thing work. Also, you may need to install an outdoor antenna or one in the attic to get decent reception. All-in-all, it is still cheaper than cable TV. Like a lot of viewers, more than 90% of everything I watch is on CBS, NBC, ABC or FOX. Add Netflix or another subscription service, and there's more than enough content to keep just about anyone happy for an extremely low price.

    If you connect an HDTV Antenna you will not be using any bandwidth as you are harvesting over-the-air signals. The only thing that will require internet bandwidth is streaming. Just make sure you exit the streaming app before you shut down the TV (i.e. don't just walk-away from streaming content, especially if it autoplay's the next show in the series) to conserve bandwidth. Finally, some internet providers will allow "unlimited" bandwidth to those that subscribe to their best service. I know AT&T in my area does.

    One item you didn't mention that the parent company of Tivo Made in 1998 invented the DVR and in a search to figure out how to make money with it came up with the Tivo company. No more figuring out how to program your video cassette recorder, no more changing tapes. When it was introduced it was a better way to record tv either broadcast or cable. The cable tv dvr is not as capable or as easy to use as a Tivo as it uses a different control system that isn't as intuitive as the TiVo is. Everyone I know that I've loaned a TiVo to so they could try it out has returned the dvr supplied by the cable company as they've all stated the TiVo is much easier to use.

    Close but... My antenna signal was not strong enough to allow me to keep the TiVo. Most channels were between 50-60 on the TiVo signal strength meter. This after changing antenna position multiple times. The resulting pixelation issues were horrible. Received Tivo on Monday recorded during the day and that night. Returned to Amazon Tuesday. Ended up costing me nothing. Also cancelled the TiVo service at no charge. No harm no foul.

  • @TheMadHermit

    @TheMadHermit

    8 жыл бұрын

    +David Holt I would recommend people buy and mount an HD Antenna first. Get that working before getting a TiVO. You should have a strong signal (in the 90s) and no pixelation. Pixelation is unacceptable and is a result of having the wrong antenna, an improperly located/positioned antenna or both. There could be other factors but I would say those would be the most common causes. You may have pixelation on channels beyond your antenna's range but your primary channels should come in nice and strong. I receive about 32 channels with my antenna, about 3-5 are out of range. I can get a signal, but not a good one with those. The rest are beautiful. Know that a quality signal is possible and what you should expect. Incidentally did you use the web service I mentioned (www.antennaweb.org/Address) or something similar to determine the distance and location to the various transmission towers in your area? It really helps in determining the best location to place your antenna. If you have not seen it already, watch this video to see how it is used (kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z4CI0NGLmpenm7g.html).

However, my reception was was good from the RI stations as I am less than 5 miles from the the tv towers. Prior to installing installing the TiVo I was satisfied with the reception on local RI channels but not MA channels. I believe reception will improve in late fall and winter. Still happy I cut the cord. I did not have a way to measure signal strength. Do you?

  • @TheMadHermit

    @TheMadHermit

    8 жыл бұрын

    Odd that you would have worse reception when adding a TiVO to the mix. It really should have nothing to do with it as it's the antennas job to gather signal. TVs normally have a signal strength indicator in the settings screen. I believe the TiVO has a section that reports this as well but since you no longer have it, it's not going to help. I would see if you can find similar functionality in your TVs settings screen. As you know, towers are all around you so you are never going to point them in a direction that is going to get it all, however you can choose a direction that gets a strong signal for the channels you desire the most. You can also buy a signal meter on Amazon (amzn.to/298JpGr). I have no experience with it so I don't know how or if it will help. Just know that such things exist.

    +guyrelax I use to have TiVO with my cable company. In that case I needed a cable card for each tuner which my cable company was obligated to provide by law for a nominal monthly fee. I needed one for each tuner and it probably cost me $2.00/month for each. This allowed my TiVO to access all the pay channels my cable company provided me. The only reason to do that was because you wanted to use TiVO's Best In Class UI. Today, that may not be the case as many cable companies have their own boxes, some with decent UIs. Not sure how it's done these days, but I would look into it if you are interested in TiVO as your solution.

    I was considerng this, but who cares about the ability to record anything, when almost everything, is on demand, is available when using any streaming sevice. This is a guess, but the only thing I have ever had a problem wt 'always' finding on demand, are some current shows on AMC, & FX, and immediate news programming. Still they all replay there shows several times ... so You can also do search functions using the Firestick remote. This can be a pain, but I'm also guessing that the TIVO search feature, is also done through a remote. Now if someone could enalbe television searches using your phones keyboard, that might be worth a one time fee. Still a $15 a month service that allows recording, & searching ... uh, who cares.

    If you can get it over the air, TiVO can view it and record it. As far as providing content like cable or satellite, TiVo doesn't really do that. So there is no TiVo "channel" that provides nfl, nba, mlb content. It does connect to a multitude of streaming services though.

    These live streaming services are nothing I’m interested in and the rates are already rising. Sling is no better than when I tried it five years ago.

    +Frz ibis I wish. I'm just a longtime TiVO user (Since 2002). Had two other units before this one. It's one of my favorite pieces of tech that I think others don't realize its benefit. Especially now, in the day and age of cord cutting.
