Tivo Bolt Vox 1 Year Later: New Features/Hydra Review

Ғылым және технология

This is a 1 year update on my Tivo Bolt Vox and it’s cool remote. I also show off new voice features that just came out a couple of weeks ago as well as “remote locator”, streaming overseas and Quick Mode. I discuss my thoughts on the Hydra Interface and TV guide. Would I buy this thing again? Watch my video to find out.

    You can stream it to your phone, iPad as long as you are home, but once you are out in the “world” you can’t. It doesn’t matter if it’s recorded on the TiVo it won’t stream if it’s premium (HBO,Showtime,Starz,Cinemax).......I have Comcast Xfinity and the shows do stream via the Xfinity App but it won’t stream via TiVo. So maybe if you download your local cable companies App it might work for you.

    I’ve had TiVo for years using Comcast. I used to have the premier; which came out about 8 years ago and upgraded to the Vox 3 months ago for 4K programming. Since I bought my first TiVo I’ve never looked back, I’ve always hated the Comcast boxes. Once you pay for the TiVo it will pay it self off within a year when you consider the monthly box fees from Comcast. The picture quality is also much better through the TiVo. Also another great feature with Comcast and TiVo is you have access to Xfinity on demand.

We got a 4K Vizio smart TV for Christmas the year before last and I had been wanting the Bolt but we didn't want to spend the money and our Roamio was fine. We stream through Roku 4K Ultra. speedlearner - Yeah the TiVo wont record unless it connects to the “TiVo service” and for that you pay a monthly fee or you can do what I did and pay a one time “lifetime service” fee and then there are no monthly charges for the life of the device. I also have Comcast, you will also need a “cable card” from Comcast for the TiVo to unscramble the cable channels, but that’s easy to get from them.

    Lifetime fee is $549.99, or you could pay the monthly fee of $14.99 which works out to about 3 years of service. In the long run the one time lifetime fee pays for itself. I had my Tivo premiere from 2011 to 2017 and overpaid by doing the monthly thing.

    More questions on the Bolt OTA. Is the Bolt able to be placed behind a door, like in an closet beside the room that my TV is in? Does the remote work by bluetooth or RF? How many years do you think your Bolt will last? Thinking about getting the Life time service. Thoughts? Really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. Lot of places to get answers butttttt will they be correct answers? Thanks Richard

  • @HollywoodMoises

    @HollywoodMoises

    4 жыл бұрын

    R G - The remote is RF(radio frequency) and will work within 30 feet, it should be fine behind a door (I tested mine by placing it inside my dresser and it still worked). The “find my remote” feature uses Bluetooth I believe. As for how long it will last, my TiVo premiere was still working 7 years after I bought it, I haven’t had any issues with a TiVo box ever breaking. Usually these boxes either break right away or they last for years, at least that’s been my experience. I think my bolt will last many more years, I keep it in a climate controlled area out of direct sun and it has the proper space to ventilate, so I don’t see a reason for it to die all of sudden, I have it connected to a surge protector also. Ultimately Richard, the decision is up to you, just go with your “gut instinct” on this one, it’s usually right. 🙂

    I'm interested in whether my mom can watch Telemundo, and i can stream my netflix/hulu/Amazon with just this without paying monthly fees. I looked at their website and there are two things: TiVO Roamio OTA and the one you are reviewing, Bolt VOx. Can you recommend which one to buy for what i'm looking for?

  • @HollywoodMoises

    @HollywoodMoises

    4 жыл бұрын

    Maria Emanuel - Telemundo is Free Over the Air TV, so the TiVo Roamio OTA would work for her. You can also stream Netflix, Hulu, Amazon with it, but you still have to pay for your subscription to Netflix or Hulu, Amazon, the TiVo doesn’t make those “free”, it just integrates those apps easy into 1 screen, the TiVo guides you when you get it on how to set that up. The limitation of TiVo Roamio is that whatever is recorded on it cannot be streamed to your phone or tablet(in case you wanted to watch outside the house”. Both the TiVo Bolt OTA or TiVo Edge OTA requiere either a monthly fee of $6.99 or a one time “all in” payment of $249.99, so technically if you paid the “all in” there would not be any monthly fees. The TiVo Roamio doesn’t have any monthly fees, so that is very economical.

    If we have the regular Bolt Vox Cable version with a cable card through Spectrum can we access On Demand through the Tivo? Right now we have to use the Roku. The TiVo Bolt OTA is the previous generation OTA box and can record 150 HD hours and has a hard drive of (1TB), it can be used in up 10 rooms in the house and comes with the remote I have, the “TiVo Vox remote” and it costs $249.99. Keep in mind both require a monthly subscription of $6.99 a month or a “one time Lifetime” fee of “$249.99”. Hope that helps, you can compare both models here www.tivo.com/products/ota-detail
