    Does caller ID show the name you have stored in your Google Contacts or just only when a number is stored in your phone contacts? Does 3 way calling and call waiting work with Google Voice through this device? Can you retrieve voicemail by dialing into Google Voice number on your GV phone? Thank you for answering my questions.

    +David S - The workaround I mention is at the 2:48 second mark (kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6SGl8yQirqoe6Q.htmlm48s). But first, enter your number into Google Voice on the "Porting Number" screen. If it tells you it doesn't support porting from your carrier you can do what I did. Take a spare cell phone to your mobile phone carrier, in my case it was Verizon, and add the phone to your account with the number you are trying to port to Google Voice. Once the number is ported and your cell phone is working with the new number you can then enter that number into Google Voice to port it there as Google let's you port cell phone numbers (at least it did for me). This will cost a little money to do so make sure you understand what you are getting yourself into before going down this road. For me I believe it cost about $30-$40 but it was worth it because I wanted to keep my number.

    While this is cool it's not going to work for everyone. I moved my land line from TWC/Spectrum (Charlotte NC area) over to a cell carrier T-Mobile. I tried porting into GV and I get a message saying porting that number is not available at this time. It goes on to say, "This number appears to be from an area we don't currently support for porting." It's disappointing because this number has so many accounts tied to it. Going to have to look at other options.

    The OBi setup instructions are from 2007, very dated. They ask you to use Google Chat, like you checked off in the video, which has been terminated by Google, replaced by Hangouts. OBiHAI Tech support is effectively worthless, short email answers that don't resolve problems, then no answering of emails at all. OBi seems to rely heavily on their Forum for assistance, which is like the helpless helping the helpless. My phone has a dial tone, allowing outgoing calls. But, I can not receive any incoming calls. When I pick up my phone, it stops ringing, but it is not connecting, and the phone calling in continues to here my answered phone ringing, as if it were not picked up. Does anyone know of April 2018 OBiHAI Setup instructions that account for the lack of Google Chat? Is Google Hangouts used as a replacement?

    +Debra Murray I don't know for sure. You can, however, get a number from Google Voice for free and try it to find out. The number I use on Google Voice is an old land line that I transferred over. In my experience it works pretty much like any other number. The only thing I don't have is traceability if I dial 911. You can pay about $12/year to register your number to a physical address if you want the authorities to automatically know where you are calling from if you dial 911.

    I have time warner cable phone service like you used to have. My modem connects to my home wiring. Is changing to Obi with Google talk as easy as connecting that wire to the Obi instead of the modem? The outside connection was disconnected from home service years ago. Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but I want to get this right before I make the change. Thanks!-Leslie

  • @TheMadHermit

    @TheMadHermit

    7 жыл бұрын

    +Joe Hinterberger (Leslie) Yes. So we are clear, you need two things to make this work. Internet access, and a telephone service distribution point (if you want whole home service). This is the single telephone line that feeds all the lines in your home. I show you mine in the video. If you currently have whole home telephone service through TWC, then note the location in which they connect their modem to your telephone line. That is the "telephone distribution point". Connect the OBI's phone line to that instead. Then connect the OBI to your TWC through an ethernet cable to give your Obi internet access. Hope that is clearer and rewatch the video as I go through the obi connection process.

    Regarding the phone number that Google needs to verify so I can get a free phone number, can I use my regular cell phone number (T-Mobile is my cell phone provider) and it won't do anything to that number? Meaning I won't lose that number and it will still work as my T-Mobile phone number?

    Great video. While most providers offer service for a profit, Google offers voice for free. Do you know why they do that, and if there is much danger that they would stop offering this free service? I would not want to lose my old landline number. Also, if in the future I should need to port my Google Voice number to another provider, would I be able to do that? I ask because I do not want to lose that number. Thanks

  • @TheMadHermit

    7 жыл бұрын

    +Francis Charat Great questions. Google offers its search engine "for free". gmail "for free". Maps "for free". KZread "for free". Truth be told, nothing is free. They just collect their revenue in an indirect way. In many cases this is through advertising. They also get to collect a bunch of analytics from people who use their products in order to better understand you which helps advertisers zero-in on their market. Google Voice is no different. With that said, is there a danger that Google one day abandons Google Voice? Possibly, they have shuttered other services that didn't pan out. However, if and when they do, they typically give you a heads-up so that you can make alternate arrangements. I can't guarantee you that they won't one day shutter the service, but I find it unlikely right now. In fact, a new interface is rolling out over the next several weeks which indicates that they don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon. Also Google has a process for transferring out numbers that you can read here: bit.ly/2ktZJrM Hope that helps.

    +Flap Jack You can do this freely with Google Voice. In the "Legacy Settings" of Google Voice select the cog located in the top right of your screen, followed by "settings". Once there, select the "Calls" tab. There you will find a "Caller ID (incoming)" option that will allow you to select two options. The one you want is labeled "Display Callers's number".

    What's not discussed is if you have the triple play discount with a cable company. If you drop one service, you lose the discounts on the others and you don't save much at all. I have had great success just calling my cable co every year and threatening to cancel services. If you are nice and respecful to the retention center reps, you will get a great deal making this switch unecessary. Cable companies are hemoraging customers which makes getting a deal very easy.

    I helped friend of mine set up an Obi 200 & Google Voice account a few months ago. Last week she purchased a Google Pixel cell phone and choose to activate it with Google's Project Fi carrier service. When she did this, her Obihai with Google Voice account was switched to Project Fi and she could no longer make of receive phone calls with her "landline" phone connected to the Obi 200. It was too late to create a second Google account and port over her Google Voice phone number. Do you have any advice on how to restore her Google Voice & Obi200 setup without cost?

  • @TheMadHermit

    @TheMadHermit

    6 жыл бұрын

    +Virgil Seaber III Thanks for the heads-up. I am getting a Pixel 2 XL and was thinking of trying-out project Fi but after your friends experience I may just keep Verizon as my cell phone provider. With that said, I did a little research and according to google's online help (support.google.com/fi/answer/6246240?hl=en) "If you ever cancel your Project Fi service, you’ll have the option to bring the number you were using with Project Fi back to Google Voice.". Your friend may want to do that and then sign up for Project Fi with a Google Account that’s not linked to her Google Voice. Read the above link for the full list of options. It's not pretty but perhaps you can find a happy medium that will get your friend everything she wants. For me, I think I will stick my Verizon SIM card into my Pixel and leave the rest of my account alone. If I figure something else out I will let you know.

    +Tree Of Life It will work but test first before disabling your TWC phone just so you don't have any disruption in service. Connect your phone to your Obi200 and connect your Obi to your TWC modem. Also make sure your Obi is connected to power. You should hear a dial tone on your phone after about a minute if things are connected right. Then call or have someone call your new Google Voice number. If your phone rings you are good to go. Also do a test making an outgoing call.

    I'm totally confused as to what this obi thing does and how it relates to Google Voice. Help me out here - Google voice lets you get a new phone number that is "free" - is that right? And this gadget lets you plug in your existing landline phone into the Obi do-dad so you can get and make phone calls just like your existing landline phone - is that right? So in order to save any money you then have to cancel your old landline phone number - is that right?

  • @TheMadHermit

    @TheMadHermit

    +outbackeddie I think you pretty much got it. Also, if you are attached to your existing phone number, in many cases, you can port it to Google voice so as far as anyone is concerned, nothing has changed. They still call you at your old phone number, and you continue to make and receive calls as normal. Without the monthly fee.

    Great Video! thanks for posting. Question: I have my Obihai landline connected to my cell phone so that when someone calls my GV number both phones ring. It CON is that when I am trying to call the landline (to talk with someone at home bc we have poor cell phone service at our house) using my cell phone when I'm out running errands, I can't bc they are connected (so it basically behaves like I'm calling myself and doesn't work). So if I have connected this properly, I would warn people that when you join your landline and cell phone, you will not be able to call the landline yourself. (Kind of a pain since I sometimes need to call home and talk with my husband when I'm out running errands;) My question is: do you and your wife face the same situation? If not, how did you work around it? I think I would have to "unjoin" my two phones and only have my landline ring when the GV number is called? I hope I made myself clear as I'm not a super techy person. Thanks for your response in advance;)

Under "Voicemail Access" select "No". See picture: photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipNdBWFhuntLL8kVg__PBQLhOzYPdoQdZ7ktNjRw Now when you call your home from your cell phone, your home landline should ring and answer properly.

    I just received my obi202 and the instructions say that to make free calls I have to call other obi users? Will I be able to call people who have standard 10 digit #'s ? ... Also, can I use the obi202 to make business calls with the second phone line?

    +Jay Btr Although you can call other obi users, I have never done that. I linked mine to google voice which allows me to turn all my house phones into standard landlines (No different then what you receive if you sign-up for VoIP service through your ISP). In this configuration I can make and receive free calls to standard 10 digit US numbers. With regard to using the second line to make a business phone line. You certainly can.

  • @TheMadHermit

    Good question. You could try to port it as a land line. If that doesn't work you will probably have to port the Magic Jack number to a new cell phone. Once it is ported you should be able to port it from the cell phone to Google voice as a mobile port. This would cost you money to do and there are no guarantees but if the number is important to you, it may be worth a shot.

    Google Voice caller ID on a house phone only shows the number and not the name of the person on the incoming call...even for the contacts I put in Google contacts. It appears I can buy this service and other stuff I don't want for $4.99 / month from Obi Extras. However, are there other options?

  • @TheMadHermit

    @TheMadHermit

    6 жыл бұрын

    I believe I get both the name and number for incoming calls with plain/free google voice. If you are not getting this, one workaround (if you have a more modern cordless phone) is to add incoming phone numbers to your cordless phones phonebook. When you do this, you can add a name. Now the next time that person calls your phone your cordless phone will do the heavy lifting and show the name of who is calling.

    It's funny, my Google Voice account on the computer will show names. Just not on the phone itself. I do have old Uniden phones (10+ years... Maybe 15...). The newer Uniden's do what you suggested. If I type the name in the phone, then it will display when that caller calls me. The older Uniden still shows nothing. I was checking out some Panasonic Bluetooth phones that will auto download my cell address book. That would save a lot of typing. Thanks for the reply and suggestions.

    Read some amazon reviews & some are showing they had to fork out $10-$20 after their 1st year. OBI claims Google Voice is part of their "Premium Service" & so in order to continue to support it they are charging customers. Is this the case w/your OBI? What's the deal w/this annual charge I read about? It must be new since your video mentions no fees after original purchase cost. Thanks

  • @TheMadHermit

    +Justin Kerksiek Never heard of that. It's been just over a year since I posted the video and I have not payed a monthly service to Obi for Google Voice. That would defeat the purpose. Keep in mind, Obi does offer their own subscription-based service if you choose not to use Google voice. Perhaps that's where the confusion is at.

    Visit this product on amazon & look at the users uploaded images. You'll see that there are a few displaying obi claiming if they want to continue to use google voice they must pay up essentially.

    +Justin Kerksiek Looking at the model I use (The Obi202 amzn.to/2qMTJwn) the reviews are still overwhelmingly positive. If I focus on the negative reviews I see people mentioning a $10 annual fee if they want technical support to help with firmware upgrades for the older discontinued Obi110 model. Firmware updates are something you can do yourself however and I have not had a need to do so with my Obi202.

  • @justinvegan

    @justinvegan

    I totally understand what your saying. Obviously you've had not needed to pay any additional fees. However, There is one posted review by "John Smith" that states his obi202 quit working w/gvoice b/c he didn't pay the $10 fee they were demanding. Another by "yugotec" "There is no mention about $10 annually that is needed to get premium support for this device after one year. Only then can you use Google Voice." Next by "Brian" "As of the time I'm writing this, you will be charged $20 by Obihai per year to keep using this device for VoIP after the first year of service, otherwise Obihai will disable your adapter for VoIP" I'm in no way trying to say your experience w/obi is what you stated in the video I'm just trying to understand why these people are claiming they are having to pay. The post by Brian was on Feb. 2017 & was for the OBI202 not the older model you referenced in your last post. I think your video has really helped me on seeing what is needed on the set-up end of things but these reviews on amazon are confusing me lol. I've not bought an obi yet but looks like a great dongle for my autodialer to let me know when my back-up sump pump activates. Thanks

    +Justin Kerksiek I don't know what to tell you other then my own experience. I am still using my Obi202 (with Google Voice) as my whole home landline phone service for just over a year now without a subscription. Make sure you go back and look at the responses to the issues raised by Brian. He seems confused and is claiming that an optional $20 extended warranty is a hidden fee. The manufacturers response to him clarifies this.

    I don't understand why you have to do musical chairs with porting. The law was passed in the early 2000s that providers WILL allow transfers and porting between carriers. If google cant do this then they shouldnt operate a phone service in the US.

  • @TheMadHermit

    @TheMadHermit

    +K0gashuk0 The FCC rules only cover moves from one service to another within the same geographic area. So although it can be done outside of geographic regions, it is not mandated by the FCC. As I understand it, there are transfer-out costs that would have to be paid to deal with the out-of-area transfer of landline residential service. Since google offers its service for free they probably don't want to add a pay wall to their sign-up process.

  • @K0gashuk0

    +HD Geek Review It is the same geographic area. Yes costs are allowed but it covers land lines and cell phones. The backhaul be it switching or Voip was not specified so they don't get a free pass. Vonage and every other Voip carrier gets that this applies to them. Google needs to get it too.

    Thank for your amazing KZread channel and believed that you can offer some advice or help to VoIP and Long range Wifi solution. I am new to Vo IP, ATA and IP PBX but I have 3 landlines in my home from our local Telephone company. I have a office just 1 km away from my home. My 3 home landlines are connected to a 3 line 8 extension legacy PBX. I do not want to get another landline for my office 1 km away but intent to use 1 or 2 of extensions from my home for my remote office, so that I can receive call and make call from my office remote extension as if I am at home. My old solution: I get long range wireless cordless phone in my office as extension. I am thinking of a new solution, since I have internet in my office, I can use ATA (eg. Granstream HT503 with 1 fxs and 1 fxo ports) connected to 1 of my home PBX extension and on the remote office also use 1 HT503 connected to a analog phone. Can this be done ?

And a really good, fully featured one at that. If you need 911 then there is a nominal fee of $15/year. I will take that over paying $120-$240 per year to get the same service plus E911 through my ISP or other online phone provider. :)
