I ended up getting the TiVo Bolt, from Amazon. Yes, it's a refurbished DVR, from 2015, but it comes with lifetime tuner service, so it's the perfect cord cutting device.

The airtv2 can indeed fast forward through commercials on recorded content. Also another important consideration is that the full featured (not just barebones PSIP) program guide is free even without a Sling subscription.

Yeah but the most important question is do any of these DVRs give you DVR functionality for free with no monthly fee? Luckily I have an old TiVo Romeo with lifetime subscription just before they ended that offer so I'm set but if someone today wanted to get an over-the-air DVR that has no monthly fee to record local over the air is there a option that allows them to buy the DVR wants and then have no monthly fee with full functionality to record things?

I have the complete Amazon Fire TV setup. All TV's with Firestick, main TV with Fire Cube, Recast box connected directly to new Linksys Router and Channel Master OTA antenna. Problems: doesn't always record show the are scheduled. Every week it miss recording certain shops from local OTA main channels. Sometimes the TV or something freezes and I have to hit the home button on the Fire Cube and then go back to resume show that is no-record, watching live. For the most part the whole amazon setup has been good but not perfect. SO I am looking to upgrade again. My network speed is gigablast, latest and greatest Linksys router, gigabit switches, Fire TV cube interface has been upgraded to gigabit. while watching movies or what ever I am getting around 300mg download speed. I'm hoping my problems are with the Fire TV cube or the recast box. I'm thinking of upgrading to the Tivo Edge system, they claim its the best DVR on the market so might as well try it. Our house is all new with cat5 wiring with a central network panel in pantry room. Fiber from the street into house network panels. Any opinions.

I'm located in Costa Rica, please excuse my poor english, great videos by the way. I'm planning to keep my cable subscription (not planning to go OTA) and buy myself a DVR to record series and TV shows. My actual supplier is charging a crazy monthly fee for a DVR service that is crap. Before investing on a DVR, my concern is to get access to my cable provider TV guide in order to choose what and when to record a show. Based on your experience, which DVR fits best to my personal needs?

Is there a way for the Fire TV Recast to stream the OTA channels to another (smart) TV via WIFI?

The most important CON for the AirTV that you forgot to mention is that it does not buffer live TV like ALL other DVRs do. This means you cannot pause and rewind live TV unless you record it first.

Does now pause live TV after latest app updates. Also despite what’s said in the review it can fast forward thru commercials on recorded content.

UPDATE: Tivo no longer sells the 4 tuner 2TB Edge OTA, only the 2 tuner 500GB.

The Nvidia Shield is a great device, but it doesn't belong on this list because it alone is not an Over the Air DVR. There's no coax input. It takes other equipment and/or 3rd party software to make that happen. You'd need a TV tuner, for instance. Or I guess technically you could download Locast and some DVR software, then technically it's functioning OTA DVR, but Locast is limited. I think people usually mean antenna tv DVR when they say Over the air/OTA. A separate video like "How to record OTA channels on Nvidia Shield" could make for an informative video.

Tivo Edge OTA option only comes with 2 turners. For this reason, it's not a contender for me. The Cable version of Tivo Edge comes with 4 turners but who wants to connect this to cable? Currently I use a Tivo Roamio OTA with 4 tuners and I sue all of them.

Is the Edge really worth buying over the bolt?

I'm looking to replace my Amazon Recast. It has been an absolute PITA from day one. I would not resell it on ebay, I don't want to screw anyone out of their money.

guys, nvidea shield is not a DVR it cannot record anything. It is a network streamer.

Good review except that I think numbers 1 and 2 should be reversed. You also left out HDHomerun.

Be aware that the Tablo Quad (any Tablo) requires one subscription for the guide to function and then they surprise you with ANOTHER subscription needed to get the commercial skip to work. The unit quite often will lock up and show only a blue screen with a spinning circle in the middle (buffering/start-up). Rebooting, unplugging,… doesn’t fix it either! Usually it will magically fix itself over night, but,…???

My Tablo Dual overheats too and craps out after about a year. The way the AirTV 2 is design, with it standing up right more room to breath and cool down and a built in fan. Not having those two designs on the Tablo is a design flaw. Hopefully it gets fixed on future models.

Update: I got a full refund from Tablo, and I really give them thanks. If Tablo weren’t SO BAD, I wouldn’t know just how much better my new TiVo Quad is!

The 4 tuner Tivo edge dvr has been discontinued. The only edge model left is a 2 tuner version.

How is this for 2023 when the comments are 2+ years old. FireTV Recast is no longer supported by Amazon so shouldn’t even be in the the Top list.

Huh - all kinds of crap that I don't need. All I need is the (falsely) mentioned OTA. I am basically watching two local stations and recording for time shifting only one of them, one hour, 5 days per week. And lately needing to actually utilize the time shift less than once per week.

Very unclear, on what you think is good or bad

Tivo should not even be on the list.

@@EarlBalentine Depends on whether or not you like paying the subscription fees. Plus it's $199 for the equipment for each tv you have. The mini's have to have ethernet or you have to buy their adapter for wireless for each extra tv. It adds up fast.
