This Low-Budget Animated Movie Gave Me Nightmares

Комедия

Another movie review means another tragedy. However, I believe that this movie is SO bad that tragedy only grazes the surface of a sea of sorrows. Prepare to cry, laugh, scream, and hide because Mr. Wogglebug is coming for you.

    Yeah, compared to everything else it's not GOOD and the story is certainly not the most original, but it's actually not that bad for what it is. I'm just impressed the creator clearly got different people to do the voices. I was part of a group that made a like 25 minute short film version of Treasure Island for English class, and that was also definitely not GOOD compared to every other movie in existence, but it was a hell of a lot of work for a much shorter runtime than this movie, and that didn't even include any cg rendering. They should be proud of accomplishing an entire movie, even if it's not great. I'll be honest I've seen worse movies, too.

    Except I honestly think they just mismashed a bunch of existing stories together because most of this is so reminiscent of the Oz books. The Wogglebug's name, personality and backstory are just yanked straight from the books. The trees, the girl, the bad guys and the helpful ones and parts of the plot are all very similar to Oz characters and plotlines.

    Few notes from a #1 Wogglebug Stan (who hasn’t actually watched any of the movies all the way through, I’ve just been following the channel for a long time) - Andy didn’t even scratch the surface of how deep this rabbit hole goes. The creator has made several movies, books, and even a Wogglebug plushie you can buy from her website. My personal favorite Wogglebug media are the custom birthday messages you can find on her channel. The one where Mr Wogglebug eats a passion fruit and dances in complete silence for a solid minute is an honest to god masterpiece. - The website is back up. The creator was actually having some serious financial problems that resulted in her being unable to pay for the website, but she was able to get it back up through donations. - There was a recent controversy where the creator randomly dropped a video declaring the Wogglebug as gay. She would later delete the video and make several new ones renouncing the claim. It’s actually pretty sad realizing why this happened, I’m pretty sure people were just memeing on her but she claimed to have received an actual threat telling her to make the video, and did so fearing for her safety. Her tone on the matter is far from desirable, but she really was pushed to her limits. - That being said I actually want to take a moment to say, just to be safe, although I encourage people to check out her videos since they’re pretty entertaining, please don’t try to reach out or leave (unconstructive) negative comments, just leave her alone. Although it’s not really my place to speculate, her videos lead me to believe that she is neurodivergent and that the Wogglebug is a special interest of hers. She pours a lot of love into this project, and although that doesn’t make it good by any means, you can see her earnestness and passion and I’d hate for her to lose that. - The main reason why there aren’t many videos talking about the series is that the creator is very defensive over her work. I don’t know if she’s been issuing copyright strikes or simply asking creators to take them down- either way I don’t approve of this as it’s fair use and generally people just have the right to talk about these things. I hope this video stays up, it was interesting to hear another opinion on the movie. Again, I don’t condone her actions but considering her situation I also empathize with her defensive attitude. Ok yeah that’s it, great video Andy ❤️

    A massive passion for a project coupled with unwavering defense of said project is always an odd and disastrous combo. I knew a few people in film school whose creative output/attitude was VERY similar to what you're describing, and it was always sad to watch. You'd have this person who poured so much time and energy into what is genuinely a good concept/story (not familiar with her work, but based on yours and other comments, this seems to be the case: good idea, bad execution) but because of that passion/energy, they would completely close themselves off to ANY criticism, constructive or otherwise. So they'd pour energy and effort into the wrong places and areas, they'd add a bunch of unnecessary stuff, and the original good idea gets buried in bloat or lost in cringe. You also run the danger of self-inserting - either consciously or subconsciously - which is almost always a disaster waiting to happen. I've seen it happen multiple times and it hurts every time, because people with this amount of creativity deserve success, but they'll never find it as long as they keep getting in their own way. This goes for anyone going into a creative field: you are the WORST PERSON to judge your own work. "You are your own worst critic" isn't JUST about negative criticism. You'll always either tell yourself "no" too often or not tell yourself "no" enough. You WILL get married to an idea that you and only you like, you WILL shut down a good idea because you don't like it, and you WILL limit your own talents. It's just the name of the game, and it's why shutting out any and all criticism is the worst thing you can do for your own work.

I wrote this comment before you explained btw but geez am I surprised to see him. He was written to say unnecessary bullshit. Also they included the Nome King???? Aka the main villain of the Oz books??? Rugerdo??? Sry I used to be an Oz nerd and I promise you most of the books are just as batshit insane (although very enjoyable) Fun fact about the Wogglebug: he ends up running Oz's university where you never have to study, all you have to do is drink your education juice every day and you'll learn everything when you drink it. Instantly. The students spend all their time playing games and doing athletics. My essay is concluded.

    As bad as this movie is, stuff like this is actually inspiring to me. Because someone wanted to make a movie so bad that they actually went through with it. And sure, it's not a good movie, but they made it and that in itself is really cool It makes me feel like I could make a passion project, too, and it doesn't have to matter if it's good or not I think we need more people who don't know what they're doing to be making things. There's such a pressure to make a good product, make something others will like, make something polished, etc. Especially because of the effects of late-stage capitalism Make bad art. Genuinely I don't know anything about the creator but only positive feelings toward them, this is cool and I hope they didn't get too much hate bc I can see them getting harrassed over this. I would say "I think with more practice they could make something genuinely good" and I think that could be true, but that's not the point. This is good enough, on it's own, with all it's flaws. It's existence doesn't need to be justified by being a potential stepping stone Bad art is allowed to exist. Bad art is cool, actually

As a film buff myself, I fear that the pure emotion and energy of the shining could never match that same ferocious and incredible, even flat our DARING energy exuded during the croods 2. I feel like too many commentators would just ramble about how bizarre the Wogglebug's story is - which it IS - but it's super accurate to the book. That being said, of all the characters to make a movie out of, why the highly magnified and thoroughly educated pun-spewing bug?

    The structure actually makes more sense if you read the oz book series, the books plots usually went in insane directions Also the waddle bugs two character traits in the books were being full of himself and loving puns and play on words in general, so yeah it's consistent with the canon, that being said it still looks boring as hell

  • @maxwell1741

    @maxwell1741

    Oh nice thanks for highlighting! My final thoughts are the Waddle Bug worked great in the books as a silly support character who would irritate the main characters but still remain charming, the humor came with how other people reacted to him, he does NOT work well as a protagonist, and this person would have had to give him entirely new character traits to make it work because he was never meant to be a fully fleshed out protagonist, it's kind of the same problem as spinoffs like the Cleveland show

    It's a goddamn miracle that the creator (Cynthia) is able to pay people to voice her characters, and then make a living out of her wogglebug obsession. Like I don't know how she does it! Like who would even buy her movies, books? The stories themselves aren't that bad, but the animation is a major turn off. The animation looks like it comes from the Sims, which will definitely scare off potential viewers I subbed to her channel ironically just for the entertainment of watching the creator's sad attempt to make a living out of her Wogglebug husband. I do really hope she gets a bigger cult following. Even though it will bring negative attention, it could also bring a bigger fanbase which could actually be good for her business. I would be genuinely happy if she was able to have a bigger budget with a real animation team. I would honestly love to see a wogglebug movie with Dreamworks level animation

    The creator used to post frequently on Kiwi Farms, there was a thread on her where she was roasted regularly. If I remember correctly she's been diagnosed as both autistic and schizophrenic and lives with her mother. Her dad is deceased but he ran a motel business so Cherie (the author if this film) has regular funds that enable her to buy the resources like voice actors and but is bad with managing money and has failed to pay them before. Cherie is literally obsessed with the Wogglebug; it's the only thing she fixates on. People in the Kiwi thread tried iffering cobstructive criticism at first but she rejected everyone's suggestions so they just sat back and mocked the shit out of her mediocre and socially tone-deaf content. She's actualy quite an aggressive and possessive person who's gone after people who've written their own Wogglebug stories; she thinks this public domain character belongs to her.
