Quick disclaimer: If you are wondering why Auntie is wearing two different coloured t-shirts, my battery died while I was taking the b-roll the morning I found her so I had to come back!
Today I want to show you why I love Bangkok, Thailand! We are heading to Charoen Krung Road in search of new Thai street food dishes and new adventures!
I stumbled across this unbelievable 48 year old street food cart and quickly got friendly with the legend that is Pa Waree (Auntie Water). She ran me through the dishes like we were old friends in the family kitchen!
I had:
Khao pad pla salid - Fried rice with gourami fish
Pad cha pladuk - Stir fried spicy catfish
Khao pad tom yum - Sour and spicy fried rice
Pad Pak Kanaeng Moo Krob - Stir fried sprouts with crispy pork
The whole meal came to 240 Baht, which is £5.60 / $6.65 🤯

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this KZread channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

Gary, this is why you are the number 1 Thai food blogger! It's not only the respect you have for the people, their culture and their lives. It's not only the hidden gems you find. It's demonstrating to tourists (farang) to get out of their accommodation and search out these gems. Don't walk past them, on your way to Starbucks or 7Eleven. Food is such a central part of the Thai culture. Don't be afraid to embrace it. You won't be disappointment. Our benchmark, courtesy of your blogs, is: the more locals the more attracted we are! A beautiful episode. Up their with Cowboy Pad Thai episode. Keep up the great work! Waz and Caz

Regarding that Aunt Waree spoke about "the year number 48" means the number of Buddhist era or Thai calendar, which is the year 2548 or the year 2005. So, she has been opening the restaurant for about 17 years.

What a little gem street food found and what a lovely lady she is. Your face said it all😋, diet is out of the window Mr Gary 🤣 Incredible vlogging ❤️🇹🇭🙏
She has been open since 2548, Thai years currently 2565. Still, say she has been open for awhile but not for 48 years. Enjoy Thailand brother.
ขอขอบคุณครับที่คุณรักประเทศไทย และรักคนไทย ขอให้มีความสุขมากนะครับ
i think when she said 48, she means she opedned since 2548 in buddhist calendar, which is 2005 (so she's been opened for 17 years, still a lot though)

Amazing! You're really doing a great job! As chefs and Thai food junkies we really appreciate your style and the way you do your reviews. Very thorough and honest (when you don't like something you just say it and don't pretend and roll your eyes in fake amazement) and no nonsense. And you speak Thai which I really respect (not just because you're from England XD ). We're watching all of your episodes and preparing our food map as we're coming back to Thailand in the new year and we're realising we really don't know (or rather didn't) as much about thai food as we thought. We wanted to ask you a few questions: 1. We have a 7 year old daughter that eats all kinds of food but doesn't have much tolerance for spicy food (yet). Can you suggest us few dishes that your son enjoys that are not to hot/peppery? 2. Where can we find some great duck dishes? soups, stir-fries, rosted/peking doesn't matter, we love them all! 3. Same as the previous question but with crab. Doesn't have to be Bangkok, we'll be traveling for a month and a half, north, south, koh pangan and a bit of Laos. Thanks again for what your doing! Take care

You're so right about just walking around and randomly finding a real gem in Bangkok. After trying your recommendations in Talat Noi, which were all fantastic, I started just wandering around on my own with no direction. Going up and down city blocks and back alleys finding awesome little food stalls with locals all sharing a common interest, good food. I would consistently clear out kitchens (everyone except the cook) after ordering my phet phet dishes. I typically sit at the back of restaurants so I would see a wave of customers coughing before the chili fumes would eventually reach me. 🤣

Hi Gary, lovely opening theme music of Isaan region's Tha-rae ( แตร ) instrument. Yes, now we know where Finley got the word ( "Unbelieve(a)ble" ) from. Today's Pad Pla dook is one of my favourite dishes, but I think Aunty uses Gra Chaai and not Galangal. You are so hyped today, that means the food must be really, really delish! 😁. I'm literally drooling ...
เริ่มเก่งภาษาไทยแล้วนะเยี่ยมเลย
dude your vids are awesome! getting me so stoked to visit Bangkok end of December/jan gonna follow your recs !!
Omg Gary that was an amazing video. What a fantastic Auntie. The food looks Unbelievable lol. Keep up the good work ☺️ love Rick and Nik 🥰
Another gem. Thanks, mate.
Awesome vid, brother! Please don't be embarrassed one iota about the 48 year thing. You can't know everything, you do know much more than the vast majority of the rest of we non-Thais, and now you have this bit of knowledge in your tool-belt. Auntie .. what a beautiful kind looking soul .. and legend! And your genuine surprise and excitement in finding this spot was very cool to witness. Too much heat! Stop the video! Lol .. nice. :) Carry on, good sir!
Not tuned in for a while, glad to see you are back out on the road brining us along for the adventure. Love to stop by street vendors and form connections and discover those sometimes obvious gems hidden in plain view.
love how u connect to locals this is so lovely and adorable🥰 and to be honest this 4 dishes make my stomach rumbling!!!!
Auntie Waree (yes, her name means water) said she opened since 48, which mean 2548B.E.(2005 A.D.). It's Buddhist Era. Now it's 2566(2565 in this VID). So she's been opened for 17 not 48 years.
Great episode mate. When people ask why I love living here, this is exactly why.
You didn’t need to go anywhere else wow those all looked amazing 🤩
Omg this food look so good🤤
Man, thank you so much. I am salivating, and I can almost taste and smell the food. I am coming to Bangkok to live in February, co I will definitely visit Aunty. Thanks for your videos, they are wonderful.
that pla sa lid is common and delicious. it's sun-dried and slightly salted. normally, we just deep-fry it and eat. but yes, it tastes very nice to add deep-fried pla-sa-lid in a fried rice.

Dear Gary, Pla Slid is the most popular and most delicious salted fish in Thailand. Normally Thai people eat Pla Slid with porridge, but Pla Slid can also be used in other dishes.
