Quick run down of the crew: Grog: Barbarian. Big dim tough muscle Percy: Gunslinger. A class that doesn't exist in D&D, at the time the character was created, Percy *invented* guns in the setting. Keylith: Druid. Not just plants and animals, but all nature. Vex: Ranger. Bow, with animal affinity. Vax: Rogue. Sneaky pick pocket, lock picker. Pike: Cleric. Healing spells, good against undead. EDIT Scanlan: Bard. Magic through music. And completely invisible to complete nitwits.

Fun trivia fact on the cool character designs: Travis Willingham, the CEO of Critical Role and VA for Grog, was on a flight and bumped into Phil Bourassa in the seat next to him! Bourassa is the lead character designer for DC/Warner Bros. Animation’s “Young Justice,” and has a resume that also includes character designs for “Batman: Bad Blood,” “Batman: Hush” and “Justice League” series. The entire cast is made up of VA's you'll recognize from a lot of video games and anime, so they were able to draw from a deep pool of talent. When Percy started to expound on the "clever pun" of Vox Machina ("...we don't care!") he was going to say that Vox Machina is Latin for "Voice Machine," a nod to their roots and talent.

A small note in regards to the money situation, in standard D&D (which the show is based on a campaign by Critical Role) 1 Gold piece (equal to 10 silver) is roughly equivalent to a full week's pay for commoners. (The 5e Player's Handbook states that 1 silver can buy a laborer's services for half a day) So, Vox Machina having only 3 silver is roughly equivalent to them saying that they have 50-100 dollars total. (And by extension, Vax giving the kid one of their silver coins is basically giving that kids 25 dollars)

DnD dragons have many different breath weapons based on their color for chromatic dragons, generally evil, their metallic equivalent, generally good or gem type, basically neutral. Blue Dragons breathe bolts of electricity. Druids are tied to nature; plants, animals and weather. Grog is a goliath barbarian, basically a tank's tank.

The name Vox Machina is latin for "Voice Machine" and is based on the fact that the cast of Critical Role who made and played these characters for several years are all professional voice actors, all of which are voicing their characters here, including DM Matt Mercer who voices the opening narrator, the Vex's bear Trinket and several nameless lookalike NPC's.

Welcome to the Critter community! This is based on a Dungeons and Dragons campaign so all the abilities are based off the characters’ class abilities in the game. So Scanlan is a bard who has music-based, utility/buffing kind of magic that he tends to use to cause shenanigans, Pike is the healer (cleric) and gets her powers from her god and herself, Vax is a rogue who specializes in sneaking and using daggers, Vex his twin is a ranger who has a pet bear and is an archery expert. Keyleth is a Druid so she can use spells with plant powers, she can summon and turn into animals, and she can use storm type magic (Druid is a very versatile class in the game), Grog is a barbarian who can tank damage and deal a lot of melee damage and is very strong, Percy is a gunslinger and a tinkerer who uses his gun (the only one currently in existence in this world, which is why it jams a lot). The game rules also explain why Pike runs out of healing at a certain point. Good eye on the animation, it was animated by Titmouse, the studio that did Legend of Korra!

Helpful info: 1. This story is based on a Dungeons and Dragons campaign played by a bunch of voice actors from 2013 to 2017 (first at home, then live streamed on the internet). That means the story was written by improv acting and random dice rolls. It is not going to follow the same rules as a normal tv show. 2. The first two episodes are a prologue to quickly introduce Vox Machina and the world they live in. The story really begins in episode 3. 3. Marisha Ray created Keyleth based on Avatar: the Last Airbender. She's a huge fan, as are the animators who worked on this show. They're not even trying to hide it. 4. Grog, on the other hand, is NOT based on Drax at all. Unless the game designers in 2004 were loosely basing Goliaths (Grog's race) on Drax's look in the comics - extremely unlikely - the similarity in physical appearance is coincidental. And Travis created Grog before Guardians came out, so the stupidity is coincidence too.

Hello! So... I confess, the following comment is a copy and paste of one I wrote quite a while back, have tweaked several times, and so now I fall back on it to give a Critical Role explanation. Yes, it's a bit longer than average, but... there's A LOT of stuff to cover, I summarized as best I could. Welcome to the world of Critters. Once upon a time, many years ago a talented voice actor was about to have a birthday, and to celebrate Matt Mercer, another well-established voice actor and talented GM (Game Master) offered to run a role-playing game for a group of friends... who also all happened to be voice actors. So, a group of nerdy ass voice actors sat around and played D & D. The group had so much fun they made it a regular thing, Felicia Day of 'Geek and Sundry' heard about this game and approached them with the idea of streaming it... and it became a hit in its field, eventually growing into its own company and channel known as Critical Role. Parting on good terms with their previous home, Felicia Day has a small role in the beginning of episode 2. Vox Machina was the group of characters they played in Campaign One, there has also been a Campaign Two, in which the cast plays a whole new group of adventurers. Both are set in the same world, but on different continents, and Campaign Two is set a few decades after the end of Campaign One. Each campaign ran for over a hundred episodes which are all over three hours long, and we are over 60 episodes into Campaign Three. They have also put out a bunch of other content, from talk shows to shorter games in other Role-Playing worlds. They have played live shows to sold out theaters, become the number one channel on Twitch, have merch stores in multiple countries, have comics and actually published books of fan art (there are some talented as F*** Critters) they also started a nonprofit charity to... "Leave the World a Better Place." The whole cast would all tell you that they never expected any of this, that it has been a wild ride and they are just trying to hold on and be worthy of it. A few years ago they started looking into the possibility of an animation, but no one was buying, or at least not on their terms, so they went to the Critters to try and raise upwards of $700,000.00 over the course of 45 days in order to make a two-part special for themselves and their fans.... The Critters laughed, and smashed through not just the goal amount, but also ALL of their stretch goals within an hour. By day 45 they had raised nearly 11 and a half million dollars, added a bunch more stretch goals, and the two-part special became a season. Amazon took note and basically funded a second season (3rd season was green lit just before season 2 dropped) to get the streaming rights, but the show is created by Critical Role. Those Nerdy Ass Voice actors are the producers and have full creative control. Most of the people they hired, from writers to artists and composers are also fans who love and know the story and its world. It is one of the truest examples of a project of love I have ever seen. During the production of season one of the animation they put out a series of videos to keep their fans in the loop of how things were going. Interviewing the people behind the scenes and giving non spoiler info about the production. It's a good watch and will really help you understand the devotion and love that went into this project, as well as introduce the cast. Personally, how the lead composer got the job is one of my fav stories. Here is that play list. kzread.info/head/PL1tiwbzkOjQwJdoNetaNJE1zZVOE7xi8u The latest big news is that Amazon has signed off on producing a season based on the Campaign Two group, known as The Mighty Nein! And no I did not misspell Nein. They have also reached a multi year agreement that Amazon gets the first look at any new shows OR movies Critical Role wants to produce. Many a fans ears perked up at the mention of possible movies given the popularity of a particular 4 episode and done Campaign, “Exandria Unlimited Calamity” It is a separate adventure set in the same world, but way, WAY, before Vox Machina's or The Mighty Nein's Time. Once again, welcome to this new world, hope you enjoy your visit and stay for a while... it's a devoted community with a lot of heart... and dicks... so many dicks... LoL. Let Chaos Reign!

@@byrdmanteddie The nice thing is that now that we're a whole 2 seasons in, Critters know what they *can't* say that would risk spoilers, and the community's super-careful about it! Originally, people would give background about this character or that, but in Season 2, they really start delving into them. You guys are in for a wild ride with this series. "The Legend of Vox Machina" is based on the first campaign of "Critical Role", a "bunch of nerdy-ass voice actors that sit around and play Dungeons and Dragons", that is one of the top streaming channels on Twitch. For YEARS the fans wanted an animated show, but no studio would pick them up. So, they put it on Kickstarter hoping to raise $750,000 for an animated special. They raised $3.8 Million. ON DAY ONE. They ended up raising enough that instead of a special (Season 1, episodes 1 and 2), they made an entire season with the rest of the episodes set around their first major campaign arc in game (the first 2 episodes get a little flack for being relatively disconnected with the rest of the season: this is why). They also went and got some of the best in the business to fill out just about every aspect of the show. I highly recommend watching the "The Legend of the ____ of The Legend of Vox Machina" series of videos they did in the leadup to the premiere. Hope you enjoy the show. And no: you're not even ready for episode 5... *maniacal laughter*

So the reason Percy's gun jammed in the barfight, or Pike could not use her healing spells is because its based of off their Dungeons & Dragons campaign. The only reason why this show was made was because Liam O'Brien (VA/player for Vax) wanted to play D&D for his birthday back in 2012. Eventually the group started live streaming their games and the rest is history. Now they have been greenlit to animate their second campaign The Mighty Nein as well as a potential film deal with Amazon. Currently they're in the middle of their third campaign Bells Hells which combines threads/conflicts from C1, C2, and each ExU series.

Welcome to the Critter community! 😊 This is probably the most welcoming group of fans I've ever been a part of. This is all based on a D&D game played by a bunch of "nerdy ass voice actors." You've likely heard all of their names or at least their voices. One big thing to keep in mind is that the tropes of TV shows & movies don't entirely apply here. No character is safe from dying. Bad rolls of the dice sometimes led to events (like a gun jam). Characters can end up running out of power for their abilities, which lead to situations like Pike not being able to heal more. Keep an eye out for the voice of the Matt Mercer (who was the narrator at the beginning & the guy who got peed on). He ran the game and voiced all the characters who weren't played by the players, so he has a lot of cameos. This isn't explained in the show, but Percy created this world's first gun. No one other is known to exist, so people aren't scared of it, and it is a little faulty. This may not be the perfect team of adventurers, but they are ones we all grew to know and love. Pike is a cleric of the god of light, fire, and redemption called the Everlight. Vex is a ranger who's spent her life learning to fight dragons. The migraine is a mystical sense for when dragons are near. It's near perfect in that aspect. Keyleth is a druid, so all of nature is her ally; she's on a pilgrimage to learn about the world so she can lead her people, but she is very naive and inexperienced with the wide world.

😊Thank you. I actually kinda feel like I'm cheating a bit when I just do a copy and paste, which is why I say up front that's what I did. But it really is a lot to cover, and as prideful as it maybe, I think I did it pretty well in that post so I just saved it and update it as needed. I want to give new viewers a good foundation of background because the background is such a big part about what makes Critters love this fandom and what makes it so special. And frankly I wouldn't have the energy to retype it every time. LoL

(Edit: Apologies, I see that a lot of the info I posted has already been covered in other comments. The one time I forgot to check before posting. Well, it's there anyway.) YES! New VM reactors! Hold on tight, you're in for an adventure :) Brace for the Critter hug, and don't worry, the fandom is... enthusiastic, occasionally loud, and prone to infodumping (...that might just be me, heh) but always excited to see new folks discover these characters and this world! :) I hope you keep going with this series, I really enjoyed this reaction! Have subscribed! The only thing you really need to know (because it can help make sense of some of the character choices that might not go where you expect, or inconsistent powers) is that the entire show is based on the DnD campaign played by Critical Role. In the game, sometimes attacks fail, and powers are inconsistent, because the players roll badly on the dice. It's not beat-for-beat, but Percy's gun *did * jam often, for example, and they've kept that feeling of being at the mercy of fate in the animation. Plus spellcasters have limited uses of their abilities each day. Everything has been condensed and smoothed out obviously, there are hundreds of hours of gameplay to turn into 24-minute blocks, but all the main story beats are the same, and the choices the players made organically at the table are what created the adventure. The voices of the main party are the same people who played these characters for years on their stream, and they absolutely adore this world and these characters, this whole project was made with real passion :) Not spoilers, but additional information about the DnD classes of each character and the very basics of what that class does, skip if you'd rather not know!: * * * * * * * * * * * Keyleth is a druid, so her powers are all nature based. Elements, animals, plants. Druids are OP as heck and we love that for them :D Scanlan is the Bard, his powers come from music and speechcraft. Not a melee fighter, but a powerful magic user, and very adaptable. (Bards are an extremely broad class and some ARE more melee based, but Scanlan is at the arcane casting end of the scale). Percy is technically a Fighter, but a homebrewed "gunslinger" sub-class. He's clever and dexterous, though not terribly strong. When it works, his weapon can deal massive damage, but it is prone to misfiring. Grog is...Grog. His class is Barbarian, which means he's a terrifying melee fighter, and gets boosts when he's angry (rage). But when his player made the character he rolled REALLY low for the "intelligence" stat, and Travis (the player) leaned into it. It could be annoying, except that Grog is just a big sweet puppy, and is absolutely genuine. Pike is a Cleric, her magic comes from her deity (the Everlight, in her case) and is mostly healing and defense/buff based. She's also a kickass heavy fighter, she wears heavy armor, and is almost as strong as Grog. Vex is a Ranger, she can track, has knowledge about monsters and the landscape, and gets an animal companion (Trinket), Rangers tend to be strategists, controlling the battlefield, and she's a deadly shot with the bow. Vax is a Rogue, stealthy, fast, attacks from the shadows. Can pick locks, that kind of thing. He's the one you send in first to check there isn't an ambush or a trap. He uses daggers, and attacks weak points, he's a bit fragile in direct combat. That's a super nutshell version, I've skimmed a lot, please don't at me :p

@@hylius5780 I always thought of that being a White Dragon thing. Of course...in my own kind of mythology, some Blue Dragons are Sea Dragons; which in turn gives them either an ice breath attack or a water based one

In DnD, a lot of powers can only be done a certain number of times per day and/or depend on the roll of a die.

Season 1 is great but season 2 is epic....I know the whole story behind it and boy....keep watching. This shit gets wild. Also their campaign 2 (season 1) is coming soon and they even have a first look film right which alot of us are hoping is EXU: Calamity. Amazing franchise and just the best game.
